To rise and shine is so hard to do
When all the light has been taken from you

OOC: Dated for August 7th at night. Let me know if there's anything else that needs to be fixed. +300 words.

In the short time since Helena had brought Silas to his new home, he had been adjusting rather well.. at least he had believed so in his mind. Even though it seemed many of the members within the kingdom didn't need his help in the moment he had come across them, or the other way around. There were those whom had taken notice to him, finding him a bit more of a curious being rather than one to use. He communicated when asked to, and did everything without hesitation, just as he had always done.

Something that did surprise him was one woman he had only once met outside of Salsola: Julia. The dog woman had been sitting out in the rain when the slave and his master came upon her, though the former had been the first to notice her. Even as a slave, Silas had always been a being wanting to help others. It was what made him perfect for adjusting new slaves to their home in Rabenuhr. Kruger caught onto this, allowing him to go and seek her out.

From there it had been a one time meeting, unsure of where she had gone. It wasn't any of his business anyways. But then again, to see her within the borders of his new home. It was something else. So far, she had been the only one able to understand him... at least in the sense of his hand movements. With most others, it just left those he was trying to speak with confused.

None of it all mattered in th end though. The wolf knew his place, and he could not disobey anyone.

Golden eyes turned up to the sky, watching the stars in the summer night. He sat outside the servant's quarters, Corrine sitting inside. He didn't want to bother her, and it wasn't like she wanted to be particularly close to him anyways. Along with that, the sky was beautiful. It reminded him of the times when Kruger would allow him to go running in the fields, to be the playful pup that he was at heart. It was sometimes these small moments that made life still worth living for.

She had always intended to come to this place though her intentions had never factored in the supposed circumstances that had forced her under the vile witch, Calla Valentine's, wing. With her box stolen, the only thing she could do was play under the Arbiter's spell for as long as it took for the short haired woman to find favor in the mute, deaf girl. Of course, sometimes that was easier said than done.

Calla was not especially aggressive, or she hadn't been since Julia had known her but there were times when Julia overstepped the boundaries placed and, like a slave master keeping their interests within line, Calla struck her like she had this evening when Julia, unbidden, had come into her home with the spoils from her traps that she had taken the liberty of gathering so that the other woman did not have to.

With the blistering heat still bubbling beneath the fur of her face, she had dropped everything captured on the floor of Calla's tower's first room and run from the tower for the woods where the solace of chilled air and solitude called deeper to her than it ever had before with Calla screaming at her to get out of her home.

There were few people within the Thistle Kingdom that knew how to converse with the deaf woman. Even Calla did not know her hand movements and there were times when Julia was able to get away with talking back, if only because Calla did not understand her but as of recently, her thoughts and words had been stolen by the one person that she knew could.

Silas was a stranger, a man she had met when her life was at her lowest. Unlike then, she had filled out and no longer looked the part of the starving half-breed he had found lumbering in the rain with her rusty munitions box and nothing to her name but the clothes she wore upon her back. In recent months, she had found people to take care of her and that came with the budding offer of clothing as well.

Despite the fact that nothing luperci made had the same desired effect as what she had grown used to wearing with Alouette and her rescued clothing, she had made due with a dress of brown hemp that barely came to her knees, that kept her shoulders bare in case the opportunity to impress a higher up came around. That, too, was a decision Calla had made. Her hair, of course, was probably a tangled mess despite the constant combing she did when she was alone in her small hut and her eyes were teary from frustration as she straggled from the woods closest to servant quarters, either on purpose or through instinct alone. It was hard to tell when her emotions crept in.

Desperation had brought her here, though, the desire, no.. the need, to speak out about her conditions, to exonerate herself from her frustrations but she saw him there at the edge of the home built for slaves and servants, staring up at the night sky. He was a servant, just like Corrine. But she was too, in her own way, even if she was ranked as Family among the others of the Thistle Kingdom. Her steps were light upon the ground and it took only a short while for her to approach under the guise of the late evening darkness. He, as she remembered, could hear. She cleared her throat, announcing her presence before she inched closer so he could see both her lips and her hands as she signed to him.

'Can't sleep? Neither can I.'

To rise and shine is so hard to do
When all the light has been taken from you

OOC: +300 words.

The stars twinkled brightly, not a single cloud in the sky blocking them from the view. The moon hung high above him, bringing some light to the darkness in the night. His eyes adjusted to the area around him, but much of Salsola's land was still covered in darkness. A small smile curled along his muzzle, tail wagging behind him in his happiness. There was no one here that needed help, so he had this time for himself.

At least until the dog woman appeared at his side.

Silas was not upset by her joining him though. She had been the only one to understand him, though she probably wanted to know more about him now that it was clear he and Kruger had been lying to her the first time they met. He was just a slave, a servant now, and nothing was going to change that. Even with the promise off freedom from the Queen, he was more than certain he would still be the lowly man he always was.

His smile wavered, but only for a moment as she signed her question. Sleep wasn't really an issue, even with him being in such a new home. It seemed she had been the one having trouble getting to sleep, and this was also confirmed by her hands. After a small shake of the head, he signed back to her, "No. Silas enjoys watching the stars. They're pretty."

He sat back on his rump, making it easier for the two of them to communicate with one another. At least this way he could use his hands without having to try and balance himself. He paused for a moment before turning back to her, "Silas apologizes for lying to you. Master ordered Silas to lie to hide who we were. Silas did not expect to see you in Salsola."

Much of their conversation had been cut short in the midst of Calla returning between their 'hand-signed' words. Calla hated the idea of Julia being able to communicate with others in the Thistle Kingdom. If she had ever seen Julia signing with Silas, her hand would have very likely been the next thing for her to lose. Then, she would only be left with the muddled mouthed word, unable to get across her meanings as she had been taught. She could see the that the smile he had worn at her first approach was lost as she took her place next to him, one servant to the next. Her eyes watered with frustration but that, too, faded the longer she sat her with him.

It did not take long for him to turn to face her so that the two could talk more easily without losing each other's words to the darkness. He understood her, she hoped, as she believed that she understood him and that was enough for her to communicate with him in a manner she probably would have only exhibited with her father before he had gone missing, though it was a very different feeling at the same time since he was a stranger before this, a stranger even now.

With his signed message, she lightly nodded her head in agreement, rough light curls bouncing at her shoulders before she too glanced up at the sky, momentarily forgetting her qualms or the burn in her cheek and heart at having been hit by Calla. Her tongue stretched the thin line of her lips and she looked down and back at home the moment he began signing to her again, eager to catch every word. She immediately sighed and shook her head. I'm lying too, she signed with a small shrug of her shoulders.

I couldn't say it before but I joined a pack after we parted ways. It didn't work out and then Calla found me.

She shifted her weight onto her side, stretching her legs out behind herself and him for that matter, her tail gently winding a fruitless path in the dirt behind her. I'm as much a servant or slave as you are, or were. She didn't know how to react with him, how he would react to being touched. She didn't really care.

Her hand reached out on its own accord, the one closest to him, brushing fingers lightly against the underside of his muzzle before she drew it back to sign at him again, a glimmer of earnest interest caught in her blue eyes from the reflection of the moon and the stars. I heard, she paused, stopping to breathlessly chuckle at the concept, I saw that you could be free eventually. Does that excite you?

It was comforting, really, to have someone he could communicate with that didn't involve having to reach into his pants to get his book. Perhaps that was something he could do with the members of Salsola, start teaching them his language just as his master had done for him so long ago. It would give the members a chance to understand him in a new light as well as anyone else who might have been trying to communicate them with this language. Julia would probably think the opposite in this regard, not wanting the other members of Salsola to know what she was saying.

When he had apologized to her again, she returned by saying she had been lying to as well. So she had been somewhere else before coming here. What happened to have Calla bring her to Salsola. Julia didn't... seem like the type to fit in. For claiming that she was as much a servant as he was, she was still among the ranked members of Salsola, not like the true servants of the kingdom.

Silas' golden eyes turned down, feeling her hand against him as her nuzzle just under his chin. Eyes closed slightly, just the feeling of the two of them being so close to one another.. to touch like this. It was a bit of a strange feeling, not getting this from his master, but from someone else.

Then again.. he was used to pleasuring strangers. His head turned down slightly, enough to invite her touch and offer one of his own back to her.

Her hands pulled back, signing back to him about the idea of freedom. A small smile moved over his face as he signed back to her, "Queen says Silas will be free when Silas' debt is paid. Silas does not know how long that would be. And... Silas doesn't know... how to be free. Silas has been a slave for so long... Silas is used to being like this." His body relaxed, inching a bit closer to her as he felt more comfortable around her, "But Julia is free. What does Julia wish to do?"

She was always alone always would be and she felt like that ninety percent of the time within this place that she called home, Salsola. At least in the Court, she had, had Percival and Pascal to listen to her thoughts, though most of those had been forced, through her hand sign and lip reading. Here, Calla had made no definitive move in trying to understand Julia and none of the other Salsolans seemed interested or had shown such an interest, in the deaf girl that followed Calla around aside from just a few days prior and that had been Silas, a communal servant.

She was a puppet who would undertake each and every one of Calla's orders till she got back her box from the woman and when she did... well, she had plans that didn't include thanking her but did include a wooden club and a pair of rusty blades she'd use for the Valentine's fingers.

His eyes were expressive in the way they shut at her touch, leaving her breathless as she tried to find the words in her mind to display with her fingers, with her hands. Deft and diminutive enough, she wasted no time in moving her hand from the fur at the underside of his maw to the side of his face and then higher to his hair line before she was finally ready to drawl back her hand so she could speak with him. She didn't want this to become awkward.

As his hands moved to sign to her, her eyes pointedly followed each of his words with keen interest. He relaxed at the end of his sentiment and her eyes rose to greet his own before she shook her head. 'You're not a servant or a slave to me,' she said, crooning her head his way. She lifted each of her hands, letting them settle over his chest and heart. She didn't know his past or what he had gone through to feel like he deserved to be a slave or servant but if she was to be here long, she could at least find comfort in knowing that he understood her.

When she drew her hand back, she left one on his and tried signing with just the one while one stayed locked on his chest where he had pushed closer to her.

'I can show you how to be free.'

She wanted to feel good, feel like she wasn't trapped in a world that was a nightmare every day the rest of her life. She thought maybe he would like the same and perhaps she made things different than his other masters had for she did not push him to do as she wanted. 'Would you trust me?' she asked, tugging back her hand so that it settled on her lap a moment later.

To rise and shine is so hard to do
When all the light has been taken from you

OOC: I need more of this. +500 words.

Silas knew next to nothing when it came to the backgrounds of those within Salsola. Another key difference when it came to those in Rabenuhr. He had been a large part of the slave ring that he knew about the going-ons of the place, ranked member or slave alike. There were small perks granted to him for his well trained behavior. No one had bothered to ever ask what had happened to him, how he had come to this state of being. What did it matter anyways? He was a slave, no one cared about him.

He could wake up one day, be broken or dying, and no one would bat an eye at his situation. They were facts of life he had come to accept. Even with the promise of freedom hanging above his head, he was certain there was something more to it than that... and in the end he would still be coming to rank members when they needed assistance.

On the same token, he really didn't know much about Julia either, not even about her box. He recalled the first time they met one another. He had seen how she held her box so close to her, her most prized possession, but the thought had never crossed him to ask about it. It was never his place to ask questions.

Her words only sort of fell on deaf ears. He wanted to believe her... that there was someone in the world that saw him more than just a slave. The wolf lowered his head slightly, then felt his hand being moved over towards her. She placed it along her heart, soon letting go to allow his hand to rest there while her own moved along him. It was such a strange feeling. It was nothing new to him since Kruger would often look to his slave for comfort or pleasure, but now he felt it again... with someone else. Was it like betraying his master? But Kruger was dead... he couldn't provide any worth to someone that wasn't living.

But she was... she was real and right in front of him.

She wanted to show him freedom, for Silas to lend his trust in her. His hand was tugged, moving down into her lap. Golden orbs darted down before they came back up to her. A silent sigh passed over them as his hands moved up to sign to her, "Silas is bound to do as any ranked member requires of him. Julia is a ranked member and will do as Julia wants."

Such a saying had been engrained into his mind, he could say anything else. He had no free will, he could not say no to a ranked member no matter how he felt, whether he actually mght have wanted it or not. He did at least offer her a smile along his muzzle. It was probably the most free will he did have, these small moments of expressive behavior.

Just a smol test of what he wants to get him to come with her. :o

To hell with Salsola standards, to their idealized system. That's what Julia thought, even after months of being trained to think like the next ingrained member of the kingdom of Thistle and Thorn. Silas was right, in his thoughts. Julia hadn't asked him how he had come to be a slave. The past was the past and while she certainly showed interest in getting to know him, there were things about her past she didn't want to reveal, things she was sure would make him run off in more ways than just back to the foundations of the building the servants were kept.

Her touch was gentle, not the kind of thing most 'masters' or 'mistresses' would have taken the time to mediate. She wanted him to feel the beat of her heart, how it jumped, skipped and raced at his touch. She wanted him to know that no matter how harsh the crimes he committed while in her presence, she'd stick by his side. All those little things, she wanted to convey through touch since hand sign was the only real way of communication she knew other than mouthed words and not too many others read lips these days. At least not from a trained prospective.

If he felt anything, she wanted to know for fear that she was going to far, that her desires were selfish in the presence of one who could not act that way. In the end, when she brought his hand to her lap and she did her best to sign to him, he came back with words that bit into her like a coiled snake. Her teeth caught her cheek. She could taste the beginning signs of blood. She swallowed hard and rose to her feet, still holding his hand before she let that go too.

'Freedom', she started, her hands quick to mimic the word she wished to convey. 'Is also about making your own choices. With me, you can have freedom. But only when we're alone,' she managed shortly thereafter. Her blue eyes settled on the ground and she smiled at him, half-hooded eyes rising to greet his sunny yellows. 'I'm going to give you a choice,' she offered, signing and mouthing the words. 'You can come with me and follow on your own volition or you can go back to looking at the sky.'

Part of this was that out in the open, they could touch one another but what she had in mind, what she wanted to give him, they needed to do behind closed doors. Not only for his sake but also her own. If Calla knew or found out, she was sure the both of them would be punished vehemently and without the slightest hint of courtesy or mercy.

To rise and shine is so hard to do
When all the light has been taken from you

OOC: +300 words.

Silas wasn't sure what to make of it all. He found the touch so warm. She had been gentle with him, just as his form master had been. He could feel the way that her heart was beating, the way it would sometime skip a beat the longer the two of them were sitting here together... but even with something like this, he had been given to another woman for the night or it was whenever his master wanted this. He had never thought about when he wanted love for himself. He loved his master, but it was always at his master's lead.

If with that, he still had the opportunity to make his own choices. If that was all that it meant, then he already had some form of freedom. He was not bound to one single master, and he could decide what he wanted to do with the days when no one had any work for him to do. He wasn't sure what other decisions he really needed to make about his content life.

But now she was giving him a choice. He could either come along with her and experience some freedom... or he could remain here looking up at the stars. He didn't know what to do. he wanted to go with her.. but how could he do so without being told to? Would this not be going behind the backs of the other members of he kingdom? Against their wishes? Or should he make this choice for himself for once... doing something that he wanted... being with someone he... kind of wanted to be with?

Silas' head lowered, letting the inner turmoil take him over before her offered her a small nod. He would come with her this one night. He wasn't sure what they were going to do, but this would be a choice of his own doing, and he chose to go along with her.
