Welcome! Cat lovers and haters alike welcome! +300

It was more than common to see feral cats running through Jordheim. They were born from roving cats held as pets and when no one wanted them, the kittens turned rather wild but most didn't pay any heed to the felines as they sprinted across their path from time to time. Some of the younger pups tormented the poor cats and chased them into trees but the adults rarely bothered for the cats were kind enough to keep the rats and mice to a manageable level. And when the prey in town got scarce, they ranged into the forest and snacked out in the forest as though it was a buffet.

Though, there was no lack of dangers for a cat in the forest. Some canines got over zealous with the cats and every so often a cat would turn up dead, victim to a puppy's play or simply struck down by a larger predator or some kind of sickness. It was sad to see a familiar cat go, but they were buried or eaten and that was that. But as Taro wandered the exerts of Jordheim he noticed that a sweet looking calico cat had made its bitter end, half concealed by bramble.

The young male grimaced, removing the poor creature from its last prison noticing the lacerations and small bites upon its frail body, undoubtedly the victim of a bobcat. Taro was ready to make his leave when he heard the softest of mewls in the bush behind him. It was so quiet that he almost didn't hear it but when he turned, he more than realized that this cat had not struggled just for her own life but for the life of her kittens. Setting the deceased animal down, he parted the prickly plant to reveal a writhing nest of no less than five kittens.

OOC: Hope you don't mind Inara popping in c: She hasn't interacted with Taro IC yet and she's been interested in getting a cat or two to keep from being so lonely. Sorry this is kind of blah post, though :<

IC:

As was her custom, Inara woke with the rising sun and, kicking her pile of furs aside, stretched out the sleep from her limbs. The cooler autumn air stole away the warmth from the coydog's exposed body and made the idea of passing the day bundled up in her furs almost impossible to ignore. Mismatched eyes glanced thoughtfully at the abandoned furs before a massive yawn took control of her body and banished the thought aside. There were too many things to be done and Inara was not a lazy canine.

After straightening up her little abode and breaking her fast with a bit of pheasant, Inara visited her sister's shrine and took some time in silence with the white skull that sat adorned with blue jay feathers and river stones on a small table in the next room. Feeling satisfied and peaceful, Inara gathered up her rabbitskin pouch and stepped out in the morning air. She had decided she would make a quick sweep through the territory and set her snares as she went. In the months following her departure from Selmaski, Inara was finding that she enjoyed the freedom that came with snaring more and more.

The process occupied a few hours of Inara's morning but the time passed leisurely and enjoyably. It appeared the territory was as peaceful and safe as it was meant to be, with the exception of a faint odor of bobcat, and the little coydog began padding back towards Jordheim, happy with this knowledge in mind.
The sound of vegetation being moved close by caused the Hollr to stop abruptly, immediately alert. Bright eyes searched for movement while wide ears funneled in additional sound. Then, almost as quickly, Inara relaxed when she caught sight of a packmate near some bushes. Taro, her mind told her. She knew little about the Kurosoul brother, besides what she gathered from seeing him around the pack and what she'd heard about from others - namely Tyris.

"Hello, Taro." Inara said softly, hoping not to startle him. She was still a short distance away but was walking slowly nearer, conscious of the fact that she may be interrupting something. Her eyes caught sight of the deceased calico, ears lowering themselves sadly, before glancing over curiously at Taro's crouched figure. "Oh, the poor thing. Is there another one there, too?"

+322 This is rough because falling alseep.

Lila had slept peacefully over the first week in her own abode, with the furs she had slept on as a child under and around her until she could barter for, or better still hunt and obtain, her own skins. She had promised Chloé more from a desire to appear grown up than because her mother had insisted that she would then return that which she had borrowed. She had curled atop the scents of home with the blanket from her package spread atop her.

In the mornings, she had risen to clean and repair the house, which, while not in a horrible state of disrepair, still needed some attention. The biggest fight had been the cobwebs in every corner, and the door, which hung slightly off-kilter. It did not prevent the slab from being closed, it just irked Lila's eye for order. A week later it still was crooked, but the collie woman could say with certainty that there were no spiders in residence in her home.

That particular morning, she wandered outside to get the materials to make a broom with which to sweep ash from the fireplace and dirt from the floor of her house. She had to range farther afield than she had thought she might have to to find a stick straight enough to serve as a handle, and those sturdy enough to be used as the bristles without breaking under pressure. She held it all under her arms, looking like she held a porcupine.

The "bristles" fell to the ground when Lila caught sight of the cat near her father, though she dismissed the feline once she knew for sure it was dead, beyond the talents of Starfa or Eljun. She rushed to Taro's side, peering into the bushes he held open. Awwww, they're adorable, dad! How old do you think they are? Her father had far more cat experience than she.

Oh, hadn't expected more than one ^^; But welcome~ Hoping to keep this relatively quick paced.+300

Shocked and astounded by the litter before him, he tried to clear away some of the debris that had kept them safe when their mother was alive. Now, it was a hindrance for their protection and he worried away at the plant, trying not to prick his hand on the brambles. He had just become to reach for the first unhappy kitten when a voice came up behind him. His green eyes strained, trying to look around without dropping or hurting the kitten he held by the scruff.

He recognized Inara for he had been a guide of sorts when she had been trying to find her sister. The journey hadn't ended well and he doubted that she remembered much of him, he had been more of a background character in the whole exchange and he had been okay with that. "Hey, Inara," He recognized Lila had appeared as well and was certainly more eager about the whole recovery than Taro himself. Taro allowed his cool demeanor to show her the way. "Lila,"He said with straining in his voice as the brambles tugged at his fur and he lifted out one of the kittens, calico like her mother. Holding the kitten close to his chest, he turned to his pack mate. "I'm afraid she left more than just herself behind when she died. There's a big litter of kittens back here and they look pretty young."

The kitten was mewling against his chest and it looked as though her eyes were open but he doubted they were any older than two weeks, still reliant on their mother at this point. "Uh, here, hold her, I'm going to fish the others out." He gently pressed the cat against Inara, sure she would take hold of the kitten. He wasn't sure she had expected to have kittens thrust upon her but it was happening now. Braving the prickles, he reached in again, by now the kittens were aware something was happening and were mewling up a storm.

He grabbed two, a black tom with white toes and a tabby girl and cradled them in his arms, placing them before Inara who had quickly become the unofficial cat sitter.

OOC: Seriously brain? Can't believe I forgot that they have interacted IC already. Buh. Sorry for that, Owl :/

IC:

With her concentration on Taro, Inara hadn't noticed Lila's presence until the pattering of sticks hitting ground caused the coydog's pointed head to swivel around with some surprise. Mismatched eyes immediately softened when recognition settled in and Inara dipped her long nose in acknowledgement of her appearance. Lila seemed like a sweet girl, though Inara truly knew little about her. She was glad that the wolfdog had joined them.

Turning attention back on Taro, the little Hollr blinked at the smallness of a calico kitten pressed close to her packmate's chest. Kittens! And so young, too. The confused mewing erupting from the miniscule calico tore into Inara's heart, stirring up care-giving feelings that had laid dormant since Lottie's death. And perhaps there was something else bubbling to the surface, something that felt deeper and more natural than anything else. Maternal instincts.
Scooping the kitten up form Taro's outstretched hands, Inara brought the little body up to her neck and held it there, tilting her head down to cradle the trembling youth in the crook.
"Shh. Shhh. It's okay, little one. You're okay now." She cooed softly, licking the kitten's face and ears.

Hearing the rest of the kittens mewing made Inara feel anxious. Shifting her weight from foot to foot, the coydog whined quietly to herself, still cradling the little calico. Watching as Taro produced two more kittens, Inara stepped up and collected the siblings before lowering herself to the ground to inspect them for any signs of illness or injury.
"Oh, they're so young." She said, a little uncertainly. "But they don't seem to be sick or hurt." The little tabby mewled and Inara gave her a small wash with her tongue. "They must still be suckling, don't you think? Do you know of any cats in Jordheim who are nursing?"
Inara wasn't sure how they would keep these babies alive without a lactating queen willing and able to help rear them.

+229 And Lila ignored Inara, but it wasn't intentional. >> This is rough because sleepy and thunderstorm. I will refine it tomorrow, but it's up.

The kittens were so tiny! And so adorable. One was a mirror image of her mother, another was tabby, and another was black and white. She bounced on her knees a little as she waited to see if she would be handed a kitten as well, but then they were all in her fellow Hollr's arms. But there were more kittens yet to come, and she held her hands out, shifting so she would be out of the way.

Inara's question made the collie girl furrow her eyebrows. Though there were always a lot of cats roaming in and around Jordheim, she could not think of any cats who were still producing milk that were also tame enough to let the wolves near and to listen while the situation was explained to them. She knew that her own young cat was weaned and that Thofnir had stopped lactating, and she didn't know of any other queens personally besides Chloé's Samantha.

She could ask other Vináttans though, if Taro wanted her to, and she was quick to voice this. Light and quick as she was, it would not take her long to get into the village and hunt people down for information about their cats. She turned her attention back to the bush, curious to see what other colors were represented in the mewling group.

You guys can PP him getting to the house and gathering a few supplies if it comes to that. c:+300

Worrying away at his mind, he reached in to retrieve the rest of the litter. The size of it was rather daunting for he was at a loss to find a mother for them at such short notice. There was another tabby kitten, though the tabby was more of a splotching on the little tom cat, and a strong, very vocal gray kitten that squealed when he gave her even the lightest touch. The last he pulled he very nearly missed he was so tiny. Pushing the confused tom and noisy she-cat on Lila, he took the tiniest, a blaze of ginger fur into his hands.

He couldn't help but be reminded of Robin when she was still little and tired and he was orange just like him. "I think that's all of them," He concluded a little wearily, realizing just what they had gotten into with the rescue. Looking between Inara and Lila and the kittens, he was rather worried. "I don't know of any nursing queens, but we do have goats that are giving milk." He added hopefully, he had seen a lot of kittens raised on goat milk mixed in with an egg or two. It was hard, but they usually made it with some coaxing.

Turning back towards the deceased queen, he lifted her as gently as he could by the scruff of her cold neck and placed her on the nest where the kittens had been. "I hope she knows her kittens will be safe, I'll bury her properly later." But tending with the dead came after tending to the living and he kept the little kitten close to his chest for a chill was riding in the wind. Autumn wasn't a harsh season for an adult but puppies and kittens would have a hard time. "I have furs and goats milk in my home. Time is the essence, I think. Getting them warm and comfortable and with some food in their bellies." He was very worried about them and quickly turned to walk towards his home, hoping the others would accompany him.

OOC: You got it, hun. Let me know if anything needs changing c:

IC:

Heterochromatic eyes shifted from Lila to Taro, narrow maw clamped shut in anticipation of the male's response. Instead, he turned back to the remaining kittens and pulled out another tabby and a noisy grey, which were pushed onto Lila. The last kitten that emerged was just a tiny shock of orange, so small and helpless that the Hollr couldn't contain another quiet whine from escaping her pursed lips. She watched as her packmate pressed the runt close to his chest. Inara felt herself relax at the sight of the gentle action and gathered her own kittens up in her arms again. The feisty calico mewed a few times and attempted to climb out of her arms before Inara soothed her with a warm tongue to her little ears.

She was concerned about weariness in Taro's voice and glanced at him with worried eyes, her jaw clenched slightly. The idea of working with livestock made her feel uncertain, with their strange noises and conflicting scents. Inara looked down at the little trio in her arms and felt a wash of warmth flow over her when the little tabby started kneading her chest. She would do whatever had to be done for these babies, even if it meant facing her fears and working with goats.
"Whatever needs to be done, we'll just have to do it." She responded, determination in her suddenly strong voice. Stepping nearer to Taro, she looked down at the mother cat and continued, "She's done everything she could for them, now it's up to us."

Inara agreed with Taro's observation that time was of the essence. The kittens were little and it was impossible to know how long it had been since they last fed. If the coydog knew anything about babies, it was that warmth and food were of the utmost importance for survival. So, with a glance at Lila and her pair of kittens, Inara followed Taro into Jordheim. She was careful not to jar her trio too much, making soothing sounds to them and pressing her nose up to their little buttons for reassurance. For the most part, they seemed content though it was obvious they were becoming increasingly hungry. Their little cries and their kneading toes made Inara's heart race, wishing she could feed them herself to stop them from feeling so uncomfortable. She said nothing as they trekked, too focused on her brood to even think about conversation.

Before long, Jordheim was upon them, wrapping them in its warm embrace, welcoming them home. Inara walked purposefully after Taro, following him into his abode where she watched as he located a few furs and handed them out. The coydog wrapped her trio into the soft, warm fur but still held them near to allow her body heat to warm the pelt.
"What can I help you with, Taro?" She asked, looking up at him with her arms full of kittens and fur.

+501 OOC text here!

Her hands opened wide to receive the mostly white, tabby-topped tom and the loud-mouthed grey girl, then bundled them into the long, soft fur of her chest where they nestled in, rooting for milk. Taro pulled one last, a vibrant orange baby, from the thorns, before declaring it the last. She got to her feet behind him and followed him back to his house, nearly tripping once when her calico, Alva, appeared from the woodwork to wind between her legs, curious about the mewling bundles that were being carried. Lila largely ignored her young queen as she hurried on, more worried about getting the babies warm than sating the feline's curiosity.

Once the three canines, their charges, and Alva had entered Taro's home, Lila closed the door behind them. Her father began gathering the things they'd need, furs and goat's milk, and Lila had an idea. She bunched the furs up, arranging them just so, then put her two kittens into one hand and pet Alva, speaking to her. She wasn't sure how much High Speech the kitten had gleaned from her parents, because so far the kitten had not deigned to speak to her, but she thought she would know more than she let on. It was worth a try, anyway. Alva, these kitties need to be kept warm. Can you help?

In response, the calico stepped into the makeshift nest, then stared expectantly at Lila, who put one, then the other kitten on the furs. Alva settled in next to them, lending her body heat to warm the nest and the babies. Delighted at the success of the idea, she got back to her feet and moved to the door. I'm going to go get more goat milk. Fresher is warmer, and they'll need more soon anyway. She left the house and raced for the barns. Though her shortness gave her a shorter stride, her lithe body moved quickly and ate up the distance. She would have to move slowly on the way back, so she wanted the going to be as small a time as possible.

Once in the barn she snagged a stool and a bucket and moved to one of the goats' sides, the one called Dagna. She milked the nanny, petted her back for a minute, then replaced the stool and left the barn. She took a slightly different path on the way back to Jordheim, watching where she was stepping so she did not trip and spill the milk; it was a good thing she did because she came across not one, but two eggs that the silly chickens had laid away from the safety of their nests. She gathered these up and held them in one hand while the other held the bucket's bail, and in good time she had made it back to Taro's house. She offered the bucket to her father, then waited to be told what to do next.

OOC+300

Things were working rather smoothly from what he could tell, they had found furs and a cat that could look after them. Glancing around, he was surprised not to see Samantha roaming about but he guessed that she was away with Chloe and the pups. Just as well, he worked with Alva and indicated for Inara to place all the kittens beside the temporary surrogate queen. She was confused by the bundles and walked around them a time or two as they mewled at her feet. If she decided to bail, the kittens would be plenty warm with each other as long as they had the fur and the fire nearby.

Taro put the ginger kitten among them too, but watched carefully, anxiously waiting for Lila to return. They were undoubtedly hungry, their mother's body was cold when they found them. A few continued to mewl plaintively, their bellies telling them of their hungry but he was glad to see Lila's quick return. He didn't know exactly what to do but he had theory and took a porous rag from his kitchen, allowing some of the milk to soak into the rag. He took the vocal gray kitten and prompted the rag near his face.

Something spurned him, perhaps it was the smell of milk, the warmth, or simply his hunger but he took hold of it and began suckling away. Taro wondered how effective goat milk would be, a cat was a predator and a goat was not but for it would do before they could get them onto solid foods like a grown cat. And perhaps, just maybe, they would find a queen and maybe even one of their own could fill the role. "Get some rags!" He told the two women, "Soak them in milk and try to get these kittens fed, I'm sure they're hungry." He soaked the rag again and returned it to the kitten, there were five others in need of feeding.
