"You could talk you know?" Rumpa didn't usually care for speaking with his packmates, but with the little girl he'd once taught the alphabet to, he could make an exception. He'd watched this fiery ball of black fur grow into a lean, hardened warrior woman. Her ambition had known no bounds. Her drive knew no end. She spent hours upon hours in the training rings with various older relatives and friends, honing her skills with her blade.

Starlight even taken to leaving the packlands for days at a time in order to learn from a master craftsman. Casa had once had a skilled blacksmith. That blacksmith had left for the Casa outpost in order to do something. What that something was, Rum didn't know. What he did know was that Casa had been left without a blacksmith and two young women had risen up to take her place. Star and Rum had both spent time in the armory with Armani as they worked as a unit to repair the weapons within.

Despite throwing herself into her work, Starlight just hadn't been the same in recent months. Her heart had been broken twice over - once by the death of her patriarch and twice by the departure of her idol from the pack they both loved dearly. Even though Star refused to talk about either event, it was clear that they wore on her. Rumpa just wanted his friend to feel better again.

He sighed, leaning against the wall of the building they stood by. Starlight threw his saddle bag at his feet without a glance and went to stable their horses for the night while Rum did what he came to do. When Starlight returned minus two buckskin stallions, he picked up the pack and entered the building with her. "Or, you know, you can just stay all tall, dark, and silent. Whatever works."

She loomed over his shoulder as he unpacked his wares for trade. His own personal guardian - as the only Cavalier who refused to partake in combat, he needed an escort whenever he left to trade his goods. She was an inch taller than him, defined muscles from her work at the bellows. The sword at her belt was for more than just imagery. Any time someone looked at Rumpa for too long while he set up his table, she placed a hand on the hilt and glared daggers at them. She dared anyone to give her a reason to unsheath it.

Remember your youth, in all that you do, the plank and the passion

It was time to give up. It was really, really time to give up. There was no point in doing what he was doing when the results had not been different any of the times he had gone to the bar. He had not even been drinking all that much if at all and still no new information had come his way. Nothing useful, at least. Just tidbits about this pack, that pack. Rumors about Salsola abound but that was always the case being so close to the place.

He was so frustrated and so tired of having no news to take back home with him. He could not go further south, either, to do a proper sweep of Portland or the outpost there. What better information was hiding from him so far out of reach? What choice knowledge was just there, waiting for him to abandon his duty and his sanity?

He had to give up. He had to. But Krios just did not want to. There was always room for hope, he thought. There had to be, or what point was living?

He was nursing a very well watered down wine that tasted more like a juice than anything else. It had been an hour since he first got it placed before him and he was still playing a game of cards by himself, trying to distract his brain and his thinking as he waited for new faces to enter. Anyone would be good, anyone. They might have some tidbit of information that might help him. Anything.

It was getting late, though, and his brain was tired of playing solitaire on his own. Krios sniffed at the watered wine when the doors opened and a pair walked in. He did not recognize them, but could still tell that one was the guard for the other. A brawny woman, he thought, raising a brow at the decidedly less intimidating man she was guarding. Her glare sent his way was icy and full of warning.

Oh, dangerous. How fun. He smiled back at her and then started waving his hand at the man to try and get his attention. Here, over here! he called out from his table, placing a palm on his decidedly poorly played game of solitaire.

Rumpa was just setting his gear down on an empty table when a strange voice called out. Rum met a pair of sea-colored and lifted his chin to acknowledge the stranger. He re-gathered his things clumsily, tripping over a chair leg as he attempted to scurry off to the kind stranger.

Starlight also heard and saw the stranger but didn't think it so kind. She caught Rumpa's arm as he fell and she growled a whisper into his ear. "I don't think this is safe."

Rum shook off her arm with a twitch of his ears and a scowl on his face. She had served as the entertainment ruiner and fun stopper for the entirety of this trip and he was tired of it! This would be his last travelling trip of the season and he wanted to enjoy it. If that meant making a couple of dumb mistakes then so be it. So, the Nightshade simply smiled up at his protector and batted his eyelashes, "Then maybe you should do your job and keep me safe, hmm?"

He continued on his way over towards the handsome stranger with an actually pleasant smile and sat down beside him. He turned his saddle bags vertical and positioned them safely between his legs before leaning forward onto his elbows onto the table. "So what-what exactly are you playing?"

Rum couldn't help but stagger when the table rocked. He glared over at his dark companion who had roughly sat down beside him. "I'm Rum Nightshade and this sourpuss of a creature is Starlight." He didn't offer her last name as she hadn't offered it to any of the people they'd interacted with thus far. He wasn't sure why, but if she didn't want to just hand it out then he wasn't going to.

Though Starlight held no love for her red furred uncle, he had taught her a few things in this very bar. The first was that no one was quite what they seemed. This man seemed well put together and warm, but the smile he'd directed at her couldn't be sincere. No one ever smiled at her that way who didn't know her. Call it paranoia, but she sensed something was not quite right here.

The man was about to put his things down when he scooped them right back up and joined Krios at his table. He beamed at him, even turning that radiant grin to the sour-faced woman who was hulking behind him. She was clearly not pleased with the situation and he did not blame her. It just meant that she was a good bodyguard if that's what she was. She was right to be wary and cautious at Biff's.

Still, he had to pretend he was no threat, no matter how untrue that would be. He did not have his characteristic bow with him, preferring the knives even if he was less skilled at them. The borrowed bow was just within reach, if he needed it, but it would do him no good in the bar. And the woman looked like she would just as easily trap him in a headlock and bite one of his ears off if he took a misstep.

Oh, this? Just solitaire. My grandmother taught me it. It's good to pass the time when no one is around to play a game with, he said, starting to gather up his cards together. He flipped them to be facing the same direction and pressed them together more evenly as he carefully inspected Rum and Starlight.

Krios gave a mirthful chuckle. Those are some wild names. You don't seem much like rum and you definitely aren't very ethereal, he added with a gesture to Starlight. She seemed so sour, maybe she should have been named Crab Apple instead. Not that he'd say that out loud; he'd already started off on a risky note by joking with their names. I'm Apollo, which is not much better, honestly, he said, trying to salvage any damage he might have done.

Would you two like to play a game? I could use some company. Krios grinned as winningly as he could, roving his gaze from Rum to Starlight.

OOC text

This new character had already found a way to worm his way under Starlight's skin. She couldn't see any immediate threats from him as he had no visible easily usable weapons and wasn't particularly intimidating in stature. Perhaps this is what made him seem so much a threat. Starlight could fight. She couldn't prevent Rumpa from falling victim to his own kindness.

And Rum seemed keen on doing just that. He cosied up to the stranger like it was absolutely nothing and it was then that Starlight realized that he was getting overly close just to irritate her. Oh, she'd make him pay for that if he didn't end up getting himself killed.

Rumpa actually meant very little by getting close to the solitaire player. The bar was loud with so many patrons and his hearing wasn't particularly good at sorting out an unfamiliar voice in the midst of unfamiliar voices. So he leaned in as if hanging onto Apollo's every word.

"I wouldn't exactly call them wild," he smiled. "Though she c-certainly is!" He threw a glance at Starlight as if sharing a joke between the two of them. She wasn't laughing. He grimaced as he turned back to Apollo, but it quickly turned into a chuckle. He bit his lip while he decided whether or not to comment on the stranger's given name, but decided that it would be a nice icebreaker. "Apollo is the name of Star's horse! What a s-small world?"

Starlight crossed her arms over her breasts after she arranged her sword so that she could easily sit in the chairs by unbuckling it from her belt and laying it across her lap. All this talk of names was far too revealing for her tastes. Arlen wouldn't have fallen prey to such interrogation so easily, though even he gave out a name to be called by.

"Sure!" Rumpa smiled and pushed his sleeves up his forearms. He leaned his stomach into the table, taking comfort in the solidness of it. "I'm afraid you'll have to teach me though. I'm not familiar with any card games."

Rumpa had enjoyed games as a child, but he and Mercy much preferred the types of games that involved adults chasing after them and cursing the ground they walked upon. When he grew up, Mercy had faded and all of Rumpa's friends had fallen into their roles in society. It left very little time for Rumpa to interact with his friends anymore.

Even his best friend, Nora, he rarely saw. And they lived together! Yet it didn't matter in the long run. She was kept busy by her duty to her homeland during the day. When she returned home they would chat briefly before she turned in for bed. Rumpa on the other hand would bring his work home with him and continue his tailoring until the first rays of sunlight peeked over the horizon. He was asleep as she arose to start her day. It made for very little bonding time.

This was why he craved for the social interactions that strangers in bars and taverns could bring him. Starlight didn't feel so isolated in her loneliness because of her closeness with her family so she didn't feel that Rumpa's desires were valid. They spent basically the same amount of time socializing. It didn't bother her, so why should it bother him?

Remember your youth, in all that you do, the plank and the passion

Krios had to laugh, he really did. His first false name was one he had decided to return to after spending more time using a different pseudonym. It was still an adjustment but folks that were regulars were already acclimatizing to the change. They made fun of him and joked at his expense, but it did not bother the Striker. Those names were someone's names, yes, but he wore them like someone might wear a hat. He felt less connection to Magnus and more to Apollo, so he merely switched the hat to suit his situation. The drunkards did not care at all. What did they care who they socialized with when they would barely remember later anyway?

He made a fake whiny noise at Starlight, who likely did not appreciate the joking around. She seemed so stern, so stoic. Just how long was the stick up her ass?

I'm told it's an ancient human god of some sort. He shrugged, suggesting that his understand of the name's origin did not extend beyond that and it honestly did not. He could feel the difference in his bones between Magnus and Apollo, and it suited him so much more to be Apollo when outside of Salsola.

Krios grinned broadly as Rum sat down and Starlight continued to be a sourpuss. Easy, then. Poker. Everyone can learn it, he promised as he began to shuffle the cards in his hands. They were well worn and borrowed, but he knew how to shuffle them well enough. He had played plenty of card games with his mother and grandmother, and then again at the tavern after he became more of a regular presence. He also had a set of dice to play with when the cards were not drawing anyone in.

Okay, two cards each. I'll put some face up here in the middle and we gotta bet on if our hand is going to be better. He dealt two cards to Rum, two to himself, and paused for a moment looking at Starlight. Then, he decided against even asking her. He slapped down a row of three cards face up. A three, a ten, and a jack were peering back up at him as he set the deck beside it with room for two more cards.

He reached into his light pack set beside him, pulling out a small pouch of wooden tokens carved by his own bored hand. He gave out a dozen of each to Rum and another dozen to himself. They were relatively even if a bit rough to the touch, but he had not bothered to spend countless hours sandpapering down the tokens.

I'll show you my hand. He flipped his two cards up in front of him. A two and a nine. He grimaced. Let me see your cards, he prompted, waving his hand eagerly. He wanted to keep glancing at Starlight, mostly because she was a potential threat to him. She certainly seemed to think he was the threat.
