The Challenge

Vidar and Veyra

POSTED: Fri Feb 21, 2014 10:19 pm

363 OOC — Vidar next, then Veyra. ^^ Set February 23rd.

Just as he had promised, Callum returned to New Dawn near the end of the next moon, and made his way across the boundary of the territory to find Veyra. If the princess was in heat, he reasoned she would not tarry near the communal den where the scent of her would be temptation for all, but sequester herself away. Though this was more fair for the pack as a unit, it made her more susceptible to the advances of his biggest rival, Vidar. He hoped he was not too late, that she had not chosen the other male. Even if she had, he decided, he would challenge the other male for the rights to become Veyra's mate and sire her children.

The urge had been great to issue this challenge in his Secui form, but to the best of his knowledge Vidar was no shifter, and therefore fighting him would have to be done on even footing. And so, reluctantly, Callum had again made the trip to New Dawn in his Lupus form.

He entered the territory too far north, near the tree where he and she had first met, and traveled uncertainly in a straight line. Though he had been given permission to court Veyra, he wasn't sure if that gave him the right to cross the scent line. When he neared the communal den, he skirted to the south, prepared to comb the entirety of the lands if that was what was necessary. By luck, however, he encountered his intended's personal scent, as well as the heady perfume of her heat. He was drawn in by it, lured to her as surely as a fish to a worm.

He came swiftly to the clearing where the den was concealed and stopped dead in his tracks. Just as Callum had fulfilled his promise, so had Vidar upheld his. Though the chocolate and cream wolf was nowhere in sight at that moment, his scent was all over that clearing. Despite that, he pressed forward, tentatively dipping his nose toward the mouth of the den. His voice was hushed, and as uncertain as his actions. Veyra? Are you in there?

Vidar laid in the shade of the pines that lined the clearing. The late February day was unusually hot, or maybe it was just his growing irritation and restlessness on top of Veyra’s nearby heat scent. A thin layer of snow was on the ground that he rested on. He chewed irritably on a deer femur bone from the kill many days ago. She hadn’t told him to leave yet but she hadn’t accepted his proposal either. The Epsilon was hungry but he wasn’t going to hunt yet. Veyra seemed to be confident in Callum returning as he vowed to do about a moon ago and that meant that the Dawner male had to be on constant guard.

His quiet vigilance was interrupted when he saw the black and white rival approach the burnet princess’s den. Immediately the chocolate male was on his feet and bounding towards where the she wolf was hiding. It was probably because of her overwhelming pheromones in the air that hid the sly canine. Hopefully that scent would hide the fact that he was a shifter now too. It had occurred in early January when he’d been held captive by the she devil herself. He had shifted twice while in her abusive care. The experience was terrifying and his chain nearly choked him when his new form caused his neck to increase its width.

He was attacked for shifting but it wasn’t like he did it on purpose or even wanted to in the first place. The second time his form changed had been the night where Vidar assumed he’d done the unthinkable but he could never be sure. Since his escape only once had he shifted accidently but luckily it happened when he finally decided to venture outside of New Dawn for the first time since his return just a few weeks ago. Vidar hated the Luperci virus with all of his guts and refused to accept the fact even now or to take advantage of any of it. More than likely, Callum was a shifter too and if the piebald wolf shifted, Vidar would not in his stubbornness and bias against the form.

The earth toned male’s charge ended when he stopped in front of den in attempt to put himself between Callum and the girl they both loved. Vidar didn’t even bother to puff up his fur to make himself look larger as his head raised and his tail stood straight up with a kink causing the top half to almost be horizontal. “You have no business being here in our territory,” the canine growled with eyes a blazed. “Trespasser,” he taunted. Thankfully the spree of recent fights had become less common in the recent weeks allowing his body to heal and return to its prime.

It had returned, as sure as the moon waxed and weaned so did her heat fade and return. She had been expected it this time around but that did not make the desire in her loins any less irritating or maddening. Though it was a toss up between what was worse, the estrus messing with her emotions and her body or her dread for the possibility of Callum and Vidar’s challenge.

As soon as the tingling had begun she had taken to hiding, running to the birthing den in Avalon in hopes that Vidar would not notice, a foolish thought. This morning when the Epsilon had woken up and poked her nose out of the den Vidar’s strong scent confirmed her fears, her suitor was on the look out. Ever since she had been cooped up in the den, unwilling to even hunt for herself in case she ran into the brown and cream male.

In theory this was exactly what others would expect Veyra to want. What would please the daughter of an alpha more than having multiple suitors to choose from, let alone multiple suitors willing to fight for mating rights? She should be ecstatic and encouraging the challenge, as many females did not get this sort of opportunity to take a pick from the litter so to speak.

Instead the huntress was anxious and emotional, unwilling to choose. On one hand Vidar had always proven to be a gentle and dependable soul, someone willing to listen and willing to give space. However he had disappeared long enough for Veyra to gain real and immediate feelings for another, and Callum was indeed the cream of the crop.

Though Vidar was of New Dawn, a true wolf at heart, Veyra was not entirely sure what his bloodline had to offer. Callum on the other hand was an extremely large male who had proven his ability to hunt and care for her in the past through gifts, though he seemed to be more willing to call Veyra out for her childish ways he also came with a strong family name, a name that carried weight and promise.

So she hid, deciding to ignore the outside world and her hunger in favor of waiting out the storm, or so she believed until a certain male’s voice called. His soft voice instantly caused her heart to flutter and her head to perk up. “Callum?” She questioned in a whisper, though she already knew it was him. Before he could respond a second voice chimed in, though it did now echo down the den walls, instead being heard as an angry muffle. Vidar. Her ears flattened, unsure what she was meant to do.

Veyra answered him from inside the den, speaking his name in a whisper, and Callum might have lowered his body to stick his head in the hole to see her had Vidar not appeared. The chocolate male charged toward him, stopping only when his body was blocking the Knight from the den.

Cal's fur had stood on end from when he first noticed the male, but he bristled in earnest with Vidar's growling words and dominant stance. The other male claimed that Callum did not have the right to be there, but Callum would not agree. His tail climbed to curve over his back, and a snarl split his face.

With a vicious growl, he declared, I have every right to be here, and the formal blessing of Zalen to court his daughter. By that right, I challenge you for the privilege to be the mate of Veyra Damaichu. Without waiting for a reply, Callum lunged forward, intent on slamming his 160 pound bulk into Vidar's chest.

Callum never paused to consider that he had absolutely no feral fighting experience at all. The only thing that mattered was that he wished to be with Veyra forever, even if it meant that he could not wield a blade or a bow, could not spend his days and nights shifted. He did not need a bed or a room or walls. He needed the princess.

And Vidar was in his way. The white Knight would not let this stand, could not now picture what would happen if his opponent won, and was determined not to have to find out. He leveled a snap at Vidar's ear, and another at his face, all the while trying to press the chocolate male back and away from the den and away from Veyra.

occ: Yes! ^__^

The blood that ran through Vidar was nothing extraordinary. His birth pack made up of nothing more than misfits and outcast. Even if his parents had been Alphas, the young male took no pride in that life and with the death of his father and his own exile it was best to think of the others dead to him and he was dead to them. He preferred his linage to be a mystery to others and besides those lands were too far to benefit New Dawn. Vidar had always been aware of the political side of Veyra’s courtship. It was true; he had nothing to offer in that sense. However the wolf was adamant in his feeling towards the girl of his dreams and wouldn’t let something as petty as his stupid pedigree or rather lack of it, get in his way.

At the Knight’s answer, Vidar really couldn’t argue with that, since it was true and he knew it. The time Veyra had confined her worries about her father setting her up with dates from various suitors came to mind immediately. The princess had been thoroughly upset at the time and now here was one of those suitors that had her so confused that night. Before he could even reply, Callum crashed his larger frame at his slightly smaller body. Normally he probably would have been fast enough to avoid the attack but there close proximity made it seem like he was in the striking range of a venomous snake – besides Vidar was ready to put this rivalry to an end once and for all. He didn’t know what kind of experience the black and white canine had but the brown wolf knew his own capabilities, and he was very confident in those abilities.

As he regained his footing from Callum’s initial blow, Vidar sneered, “She wasn’t even happy about having to court any of you. She only did it to please her father.” At least that had to be true to begin with as far as he knew. He could feel his opponent’s weight pushing down on him before teeth snipped at his ear and face. The sensitive tip burned for a moment, letting him know that he had been bit, but his adrenalin was too high to really feel pain. His head tossed to the side out of the other’s reach before he could be bitten again. “Challenge accepted,” a voice erupted from the chocolate wolf’s throat. His front paws lifted off the ground as he reared to attempt to get Callum off of him. Not waiting for them to lose contact, while still partly up, Vidar twisted around to throw a forelimb over the other male’s shoulder and aimed a powerful bite towards his neck.

Ooc: Forgoing a table in the interest of time. And non necessity.

Ic: Callum was aware that at first blush, the idea of being set up to meet people she did not know had not appealed to Veyra. That had been the driving reason for him to ask Zalen to date her in the first place, because they knew each other and even if nothing romantic had come of it, at least he was a somewhat familiar face. Then the feelings had set in, too, and led to this.

She did not know that I was one of her dates. She had been telling me how unfair she thought it was the night before I asked Zalen! His teeth clicked shut where Vidar's face had been moments before, and he reached to grab for one of his opponent's upraised arms. His grasp could break bone if unhindered, and he sincerely wished to crush at least one of Vidar's limbs. As he stretched, though, he left his scruff wide open for attack. The chocolate jaws clamped shut on his scruff, sullying his white fur with crimson stains. Cal reached upward even though doing so caused Vidar's upper teeth to tear through flesh to attempt to inflict a painful bite to the other's chest, between his forelegs.

From deep within the birthing den she heard the sudden roar of Vidar and a returning growl from Callum. Instinctively she shrunk back, her heel backing up against the dirt wall. As she listened to the mixture of growls and snarls from above she attempted to bring herself to look. The last thing she wanted was for one of the males to go to far and severely hurt one another.

Their conversation seemed to end, turning to full-blown fighting. Her brows frowned as she began to mentally prepare herself. ‘You are an Epsilon, you have been in fights before. You can handle these two.’ Rolling her shoulders back and forcing her tail up in the air she moved forward, nose first. Sniffing the air she began to smell blood, causing a sense of urgency to over come her until her head popped out of the den and the sun blared in her eyes.

Before her the two males fought full force, large teeth grabbing each other and tuffs of fur falling to the ground. It was quite the sight to behold as the two young males arched up on their hind legs and flailed at each other’s faced and limbs violently. She watched on curiously until Vidar got hold of the tissue behind Callum’s rear leg and gave a muscled tug, causing blood to gush and the Knight to stumble with a snarl to the ground.

As Vidar moved closer to the fallen Cavalier, Veyra charged from the den, giving a fierce warning snarl. Her back arched up and tail flipped over her rear, a flag of dominance. Her sudden appearance caused the brown hued male to back up in shock. “Leave him alone Vidar, he’s hurt.” She demanded. Confusion filled Vidar’s face as he began to protest, Callum had accepted the challenge, but the dominant female would not allow him to pass her. “Go back to the den. He needs to be treated." The New Dawn hunter, though frustrated by Veyra’s response, nodded and stormed off, leaving the female quivering with anger and worry as she turned to Callum. “Come on, I’ll help you to the river to clean up.” She sighed.
