It seemed like it had been quite a while since Valerie had taken more than a few pawsteps outside of the borders of Casa di Cavalieri, who knows why. Gazing out across the snow-covered forest from the window in her apartment in the fort, the darkly-furred coywolf decided that she might as well go wander around some place outside of Casa, possibly attempt to find her half-siblings in d'Arte again. So, the girl donned a cloak and then headed out. Unknown to Valerie, her cat Iris had set off too, following the canine out of the territory. It wasn't until she was almost a mile away from the borders that she turned and noticed the silvery-furred cat following her.

"Iris!" Val said, surprised, eyes narrowing after she got over the shock of seeing the fluffy ball of fur following behind her. "You dolt." The Rhiannon-Knight girl shook her head, turned, and then kept going. She honestly didn't care if the cat wanted to freeze her paws off anymore, Iris wasn't nearly as young as she had been when Val had rescued her from her tree and the Cavalier had only planned on keeping the cat until she could fend for herself. The coywolf continued padding along, hearing the crunch that her paws made and the crunch that the kitten's paws made. By the time she stopped again she was somewhere between d'Arte and Casa, or so she assumed.

Now that she had officially joined Cercatori d’Arte, Elsie decided that it would be a good idea to explore the surrounding areas more. Her great-aunt Esther had told here there were several packs ‘nearby’ but of course, what ‘nearby’ meant to her aunt appeared to be different than Elsie’s opinion. No matter, though, she had plenty of time. Elsie was hoping to set up some trade routes, and maybe have some regular trading going on between herself and some of the other packs. First, though, she had to find them so she could meet some new canines!

“Maybe I should have asked directions,” Elsie said in low speech to her owl, Arnold, who had landed in a tree nearby. He hooted in response while looking around. “Fly up and see for me?” She requested and he hooted again before flapping his nearly silent wings and taking off. Elsie raised a hand to shade her eyes while trying to watch where he was going, and soon lost sight of him. She sighed and glanced around looking for something interesting to do while she waited. Maybe there were rocks she could make into a necklace or something under the snow. As she started to dig, her owl came back.

“Female wolf up ahead,” he hooted while circling around her. “And a cat.”

“Oh! Maybe she knows where I can find a pack!” Elsie said, bouncing a little on the balls of her feet. That would definitely be helpful. “Did she look safe?”

“Sure, I guess,” he replied and then swooped off in the direction he had seen the wolf. Elsie followed along, keeping her eyes on him until she spotted a dark-furred wolf up ahead.

“Hi there!” Elsie sang, waving to her. “Do you have time to give me some directions?” Maybe the female was too busy, but Elsie hoped not. The coywolf intended to make her questions quick anyway.

Valerie was minding her own business, her body mostly concealed by the cloak and clothing that she wore. One of her hands briefly brushed against the dagger that she always kept with her when she ventured past the borders, and the canine briefly glanced down at Iris. Her ears were standing up tall on her head, always cautious. Strangers were, for the most part, dangerous, which was why the Knight girl was always listening for the crunching of snow, scenting for unfamiliar scents. Val stopped in her tracks, and then nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard a voice, barely paying attention to what it had said, only that there was a voice.

Operating on pure instinct, her padded hand darted to the hilt of her dagger, pushing back her cloak so that it wasn't concealing her front much anymore, and yanked the weapon out of her sheath. Yellow-eyes narrowed, searching for the figure, muscled tensed. "Oi!" the canine shouted, relaxing slightly as the faint but familiar scent of d'Arte touched her nose. "You, miss, scared me half to death," the shadow-colored wolf said. Her hind paws, which had previously moved apart into a fighting stance, drew together again as she straightened up and looked at the brown-furred canine who had greeted her. "Were you never advised on how dangerous strangers are?" the Cavalier asked, skipping over the question she had heard for now. "At least tell me your armed in some way or another," Val continued, eyes narrowing again.

The coywolf shook her head and then thought back to when she had first heard the canine's voice. "And it depends on where you are needing directions to. I'm from Casa di Cavalieri, which is this way," she said, pointing in the direction of her home, assuming that this canine — who smelled like Esme and Ares's pack — was new to d'Arte. "Cour des MIracles is south, for the most part... AniWaya, I believe, has moved, and every other pack is days north from here." Valerie gave hardly useful information on the locations of a few packs. While speaking, she finally sheathed her dagger before crossing her arms across her chest. She had on a leather shirt, which was for the most part sleeveless, and a gray skirt (Val didn't like pants, they constricted her legs a bit). There was also the belt her dagger was hanging from now, carefully tucked away in its sheath. Iris, who had just stared at the owl and the unfamiliar canine, now moved to hide behind Val's legs. "Chicken," the girl said under her breath, briefly looking down at the cat.

The dark female’s initial reaction caused Elsie to freeze. Maybe Arnold had been wrong, and she was dangerous. Elsie guessed by her posture that she was reaching for a weapon hidden under her cloak, and sure enough, there it was. A dagger. Elsie brought one of her hands up in front of her since she didn’t want a fight. The other she placed on the strap of a bag that was slung over her back. She wanted good relations with canines who lived nearby, and she also wasn’t so great with her own dagger.

“Sorry!” Elsie chirped. “I didn’t mean-- oh, yes! I have a dagger, too.” She reached into a pocket on the outside of her bag and withdrew her dagger, holding it in a way that made it obvious she wasn't about to attack. She supposed it wasn’t the best place for it; she should really make or find a belt to keep it at her waist, but she mostly used it for anything other than fighting. “I always have it with me.” She had, in fact, been told that strangers could be dangerous, but she didn’t like to go around assuming everyone was going to hurt her. She wasn’t naive; Elsie knew there were many dangers in the world. She simply didn’t like how negative it was to assume that everyone was bad.

Elsie wasn’t sure if this female was going to answer her original question and she wasn’t sure if she should ask again. She didn’t want to be rude, especially now that she was technically representing her new pack, but then the wolf started telling her about the surrounding packs. While putting her dagger away, Elsie tried to make mental notes of what she was being told, although none of it was particularly specific. There sure were a lot of them, though! Elsie was used to traveling great distances, much more than several days, so that wouldn’t be a problem at all.

“Well I’m really just looking for any packs that might want to trade,” Elsie said with a smile. “I make clothes, blankets, jewelry, stuff like that. I can also make things from leather,” she added, noting what the shirt the other female was wearing. “I’m Elsie Hennamin, by the way, from Cercatori d’Arte, and this is Arnold,” she gestured to her owl. “You said you’re from Casa di Cavalieri? Do you think anyone there would be interested in what I can make?” Since she was from that pack, Elsie figured that was a good place to start. It seemed like it was the closest one, anyway.

Valerie was almost amused by this canine as she spoke, pulling her dagger out of her bag. A humored smile spread across the dark Cavalier's face as she watched Elsie, listening to her, wondering why she had let an apology slip past her lips — there was certainly no need for an apology. Oh well, maybe some canines just liked to apologize... no matter how weird that seemed, or at least in Valerie's opinion. "Good, since who knows what kind of canines are out here," the girl said with a confirming nod of her head, arms crossing across her chest. The girl was nothing short of a bulldozer — not nearly as tall as her father, although she had a bit of muscle mass on her, and hopefully she didn't seem imposing (which was hardly likely).

"Don't go to Anathema or Salsola," Valerie said instantly, the warning slipping out of her mouth, hardly intentional although it was a good thing for the girl to know since she obviously hadn't traveled a lot. "They're... evil," the Knight girl added quickly, shrugging her shoulders. "But go anywhere else for trading, like Vinátta... but that's very far north." She added. Elsie's skillset was interesting, Valerie decided, and she didn't want the girl to get hurt by going to someplace unfriendly — she seemed much too... soft, nice, and other things to fight against some heartless wolf or coyote from the packs that actually allowed slavery.

Her attention snapped away from the horribleness of Anathema and Salsola, having drifted off, her kind look slowly morphing into a disapproving one. Quickly, she plastered a smile across her muzzle again and then twitched her tail and adjusted her position slightly, trying to get Iris to come out of hiding. "Oh yeah, Casa di Cavalieri and your pack are on good terms and it isn't very far from here at all," the coywolf said, nodding again before adding, "My da and adoptive brother lead the pack, by the way, and they're pretty nice." She thought over whether or not any of the Cavaliers would be interested in Elsie's wares and skills. "And a few members would probably be interested, I bet, I'm not sure who though so you'd have to ask around," she said finally, hoping that she wasn't talking too much because Val felt like she was talking an awful lot. "I'm Valerie, by the way," Val added quickly, almost forgetting to introduce herself.

Eyes rows raising in surprise, Elsie listened to the dark female's instant declaration not to go to Anathema or Salsola, and she repeated the pack names in her mind several times. Anathema was familiar to her; Cercatori d'Arte had issues with them, too, from what Elsie had heard, although she didn't know the specifics of what had happened. However, she guessed that she wouldn't be welcome appearing on their borders anyway, so she would not be going there on purpose. She hoped she wouldn't accidentally stumble upon them, but she would have to find out what they smell like so she would know not to call for anyone and simply move on.

Elsie made a mental note of Vinatta as well, knowing she was going to need to get directions to some of the packs that were farther away. Maybe someone could even five her a map of sorts, using some of the coastline where it wasn't already claimed by packs, or at least give her some landmarks to look for. She especially liked the border tree because it helped guide her back to her new home.

"Wow, that's awesome," Elsie replied to the other female being the daughter of the leader. Maybe that would help things, although Elsie was pretty sure that if the packs were on good terms, she would be alright. Still, all the help she could get was great.

"It's nice to meet you," she grinned at the introduction. "Obviously I don't have much with me today," she turned to show her bag that wouldn't contain much to trade, "but does any of what I listed interest you at all?" She was wondering what things she should end up bringing to Valerie's pack to trade. She could have some things ready to be made into clothes, but get them fit correctly to whoever she was trading them to. "I can always bring some things with me when I make a trip to Casa di Cavalieri."

A huff escaped past the girl's muzzle when Elsie commented on being the child of one of Casa's leaders "cool". Val shook her head, a brief movement that stopped almost as quickly as it had started. "Sure, if you don't mind having a da who's busy a lot," the Cavalier commented with smile, the fakest smile she'd ever given, a smile that tugged at only one corner of her lips and disappeared as the hybrid continued to speak, morphing back to the previous, less-fake smile that she'd had. "Pleasure to meet you too, I guess," Valerie said, shrugging before crossing her arms across her chest.

When Elsie asked if Val would be interested in any of the things that she made, a thoughtful look flashed across her face. "Depends on what kind of things you can make from leather," she said. Obviously, Valerie wasn't as interested in clothing in jewlery, and more so interested in other things — what, she didn't know, it really depended on what this girl could make. "And, if you're making a trip to Casa, maybe I can help you out? Come to d'Arte and escourt you there or something?" the coywolf suggested, mostly because this d'Artisan seemed too nice, seemed like she wouldn't attack someone if she needed to. But of course, that was just Valerie's opinion. "I don't really... do anything, so it gets really boring," she added, as if that might me more of a reason for Elsie to accept the proposal. "Plus I can help you carry things." That seemed like it would be a better reason, maybe.

“Well, I can make shirts from the leather - kind of like armor. For those, I usually take measurements and make it specifically for someone since rather than making things and hoping they fit someone. Sometimes I attach sleeves or a skirt made of cloth to them, but I don’t have to. They’re attached with laces really, so you can have several color sleeves and skirts and switch them out yourself.” Those had been relatively popular on her previous routes, so Elsie figured she would offer them now.

“I also make bags and belts,” she said, then another idea popped into her mind. “Oh, and bridles for horses, although I can’t make saddles.” Others in her trader pack had made saddles, but it was never something she could manage to master, and she figured it was best for them to do it instead of wasting more leather trying. Instead, she made simpler things with the leather, and making shirts with ornate stitching was something she could do because it was more like making clothes from cloth. It was just a bit more difficult to get her needles through the leather than through regular cloth, but she managed.

Then Elsie remembered Valerie’s idea of escorting her to Casa, as she had called it, causing Elsie to decide it was the shortened version they used to refer to their pack. “Oh, and an Escort sounds like a good idea,” she said with a nod. “That way I won’t manage to get lost or somehow miss the pack completely.” That wouldn’t be good; she’d end up wandering around and then heading back to her new home with nothing to show for her trip. “I have a llama named Carl who pulls a cart for me, so there probably won’t be much to carry. Company would be great, though!”

OOC: Apologies for the wait! valerie is kind of quiet in this post >.> [WC: 333]
IC:
At first, Valerie had assumed that Elsie would be selling simple things that she had scavenged – and then she had said that she made things. Now, though, Val admitted to herself that she was thoroughly impressed with the skills of the hybrid. The things that she made sounded interesting, and Valerie decided that she would have to get together a few of the things that she could trade and try and get some sort of item from the female, along with accompanying her to Casa.

"You've got quite a few skills," Valerie stated with the smallest of smiles and an impressed nod of her head. She continued to listen to the coywolf. Val was glad she had offered to escort Elsie to Casa di Cavalieri since she seemed like the type who would get lost with ease, and also the type to underestimate any loners that might be lurking between the two packs. Valerie, however, was quite suspicious of nearly anyone if she didn't recognize their scent. Hopefully, though, the two would not run into any loners when the time came for Elsie to make her trip to Val's pack.

At the mention of something called a llama, Valerie tilted her head slightly to the left. She hadn't really heard much about llamas. Clara Bates, one of the higher-ranked members in Casa, seemed to know something about llamas, although Val didn't necessarily talk to Clara on a regular basis, so all she knew was that their fur could be used for wool. The darkly-furred canine had no idea that they could be used to pull carts, though. In fact, Valerie didn't even know what a llama looked like. "A llama named Carl, huh?" Valerie said, as if to clarify. She had never heard the name Carl and it sounded rough on her tongue, crisp and strange and… just weird in general. It wasn't a name that Valerie would have picked, although the Cavalier wasn't about to comment on how weird the name sounded.

“Lots of practice,” Elsie said replied with a breathy laugh. Her family did so much sewing together that she couldn’t help but gain a bit of a broad skillset, at least when it came to making things from cloth and leather. There were so many canines to learn from, or at least to her, that’s what it seemed like. She was sure there were packs with many more members than her family pack, though.

Grinning, Elsie nodded to Valerie talking about Carl. “Yup! He’s a bit of a grump, but it’s probably because I talk to him all the time and he just wants me to shut up for a little while,” she laughed. “He’s got brown fur and white fur, and I can shear him like a sheep and use the fiber for thread to make stuff.” Elsie wasn’t sure if Valerie knew what a llama was or not. To her, they were quite normal, but maybe others did not think so. “He also guards my sheep sometimes since his long neck makes him so much taller than them.” Of course, his body made him taller than them to begin with, but then add the next on top of that, and he was actually taller than Elsie herself.

“So, I was thinking of maybe going to Casa di Cavalieri in a few weeks, when it’s starting to get a little warmer? It will make travel a bit easier for Carl when he’s pulling the cart.” Moving through snow was fairly slow-going for him, although Elsie guessed that this journey wouldn’t take too long no matter what. “Would that work for you, or maybe a different time?” Elsie was used to having trading trips planned so far in advance, and starting over like this on her own seemed a bit strange. After traveling so much with her family, it would be nice to have Valerie’s company.
