[ 630 ] Hi. This is super rambly, sorry! ^^

The winter at last seemed to be relenting, the seemingly endless dark nights giving way to longer days and more sunshine, which more and more seemed to peek out from behind the desolate winter clouds in the skies above. Anywhere the sun touched the snowy ground below turned into a mess of sodden earth, the first few sprigs of life doing its best to erupt from its state of suspended animation below the soil. The tender shoots of grasses and plant life were more than welcome to the local wildlife, which too was beginning to become more active now that the bite of winter began to yield to warmer weather. Though the season was far from over and at the very least the unexpected patch of warmth was a fluke, it seemed more than enough to drive the forest fauna into a frenzy of activity, and with the prey in such a state it seemed more than advantageous to do some hunting.

Scorpius decided to forgo the use of his horse and set out on foot to check the traps he'd set in the Pine Barrens earlier that day. Even if they did yield a rabbit or two he figured there was no harm in tracking and hunting some deer as well, so he left behind his heavy winter cloak and strapped only one of his knives to his thigh, leaving the rest of his hunting gear and other things at home. Before he left, though, he was sure to coat the sheath of his knife with poison, something he did more as a precaution than for any other reason. He would be straying close to the border that day and did not want to be caught without a means to defend himself if ever the occasion would arise that would put him in such a position. The dark beast was more than a capable fighter both unarmed and with his knives, but there was no harm in tipping the scales in his favor with a little bit of poison. Besides his latest batch needed to be tested, and what better way than to do so with the enemies of his pack, his family.

His trek toward the barrens took him through Millstone and as he wandered through the village a thought occurred to him. He would have to leave his knife and whatever his snares yielded somewhere in the forest if he was going to continue hunting and he didn't much like the idea of doing that. Scorpius both trusted and distrusted his packmates and he didn't put it past them to take his things and claim them as their own. The thistle kingdom was full of greedy and ambitious canidae all out to better themselves in one way or another. Even if he was just as aspiring as they were, he thought himself different than them, better than them, and was not about to give them an opportunity to try to change that.

As he passed the slave quarters the dark beast paused, those ruby reds of his moving to settle upon the first slave he could find, a male of greys and browns with a black pattern upon his face. "You. Slave." He said with all the compassion one would expect to be given to a lowly thrall. "Have you a task you have been assigned? If not, you are to accompany me now." His voice was strong and demanding, something he did not often get to do as he was still only a step above the lowly laborers within the pack. Who the slave was and who he belonged to was of no concern of his, he would receive no measure of sympathy or kindness from the dark beast, whose sanguine sights watched the male expectantly.

(443) Thank you for starting this! And that was not rambly at all - it was lovely!

There were minimal tasks to be completed for his lady that day, but Lux rose upon first light in order to get them accomplished for the Queen. Once he was done with the work that was expected of him, Lux then busied himself with other chores that needed to be done at one point or another. He’d done a bit of chopping for the Queen’s residence, staking the cut logs into a dry stack near the home. Once he’d done a good half hour or so of work, the Grecian male made the slow trek back towards the slave quarters. There were plenty of things he could accomplish there as well, and he figured come nightfall he’d be able to check his newest scattering of snares.

He’d returned to find that almost all of the slaves were up and going about their typical work. He nodded to some as he passed, but mostly the male remained silent as he returned to his room. A few moments were sparred for himself, relaxing for a moment upon the tattered sleeping furs he’d been provided with. His shoulders were warm from the work he’d done, but Lux did not feel sore nor tired – in fact, the slave of the Queen felt strong and confident with himself. Had he not had the misfortune to have been born as a bastard child, he would’ve made a great warrior for his family’s namesake. Instead, Lux had found himself the scum of a foreign pack – restricted to the whim of others.

Although signs of spring were apparent, the nights still were terribly cold. Lux decided he’d do himself and the rest of the slaves a favor by gathering and chopping more word for them to throw into the fireplace. He was out chopping when he heard a voice directed at him. Until the man had spoken, Lux had hardly noticed his approach. Many slaves came and went from this area, and so it was easy for him to assume it was another trell passing by.

I do not, my lord, Lux replied, his gaze finding the man’s chest but rising no further. He dropped the axe from its resting point against his shoulder and leaned it against the chopping block. The generous act was completed for now – he had real orders to comply with. Upon taking a few steps towards the man, Lux halted. He was still trying to accustom himself to the rules of slavery within this culture – they were not entirely the same as they were in Athens. Lux did not want to overstep himself, for fear of the repercussions. He’d wait until the man directed him further.

[ 438 ] Sorry there isn't much to reply to. Feel free to have them arrive at the forest in your next post. And thanks! Your writing is lovely too. c:

The dark beast stood patiently as he awaited a response, the lowly male turning to face him and answering him succinctly. He took a few cautious steps forward and kept his gaze low, awaiting his orders, knowing well not to ask and simply wait for what he was supposed to do. Though Scorpius had never seen that particular slave before, the male seemed well adjusted to his place in the pack and wholly accepting his humble role without fear or defiance. This, the great shadow was pleased with. While Scorpius had no strong opinions for or against the idea of slavery and in joining the pack had accepted their place within it without question, he did not really like the idea of them doing things for him when he was more than capable of doing those things on his own. This was the very reason he did not seek to acquire a slave of his own, even if he did find them useful for things like keeping house and running trivial errands he considered not worth this time. Still, when it came to situations like this when he had no choice but to seek out the help of one of the trells, he really didn't have much of a choice in the matter.

"Good. Come with me. I require an extra set of hands with my duties this morning." He said plainly, not even bothering to wait for acknowledgement of his words before starting off in the direction he had been heading before, easterly toward the southern fringe of the Pine Barrens. Absently, a scarred hand lowered to rest a couple of its fingers upon the butt of his knife handle, a black claw tapping the smooth and well maintained wood there as his mind began to wander to the poison hidden within his knife sheath. His latest concoction was a much less complicated mixture than previous ones but he was confident in his abilities and the potency of the mixture. There was enough deadly nightshade and snake venom in his brew to drop a bull moose for hours, so he had no doubts that it would do well against any sized luperci, bear, or cougar that dared rise against him. Whether or not it was lethal was what need to be tested, so he supposed once his duties were done for the day that he would head out and find a few rabbits to work with. For now, however, he bought his attention back to the task at hand, sanguine sights sweeping across the path ahead as he lead the slave from the village to the forest.

(281) No worries!

This male spoke vaguely of a task that required him to have another set of hands, and to this Lux simply nodded. His voice was not required, and so it was not offered. Instead Lux obediently followed after the man, curious what Scorpius had in mind. He had been given no clues as to what they were headed out to do, and so the Grecian male could only assume. Perhaps he was to assist in a hunt, but he had a feeling that wasn’t exactly what the Family member had in mind. Lux could guess for ages, but he would not know for certain until they arrived at their destination and he was given his next set of orders. Life as a slave could often times be mysterious and frustrating, but it was something Lux had learned to live with.

They trekked away from the slave quarters and towards a wooded area. Lux had still not done much exploring of the entirety of Salsola’s lands, and so he was still unsure with his surroundings for the time being. He followed silently, his light blue gaze sweeping the area as they ventured deeper into the woods. It supported his hunting theory, but that still didn’t seem quite right.

Lux studied the man’s back, trying to decipher what information he could by observing from behind – it was the one time his gaze could trace the other without being reprimanded (unless, of course, he was caught). He noticed the knife that the man had with him, but he did not worry that he would meet the blade. Instead, Lux tried to quell his curiosity and walked on towards whatever destination Scorpius had in mind.

[ 458 ] » You're welcome to play the intruder if you wish. ^^

Soundlessly he led the lowly male into the southern reaches of the Pine Barrens, the strong scent of conifer hanging heavy in the chilly morning air. Following scent and sight markings he made his way to his first snare, a rabbit hanging motionlessly in his trap, its life snuffed out by the dogbane cord around its neck. Loosening the noose and checking the line for frays he found it in good enough condition to reset the trap and leave it to snare another hapless critter, the previous occupant turned in his hands and inspected for good health. The rabbit was lean from winter's scarcity but did not smell of sickness or infection, its average sized body healthy with a clean winter white coat and clear shiny eyes. Pleased with his catch he handed it off to the slave, eyeing the other male for only a brief moment before motioning him follow with a tilt of his head.

Without a word the dark beast pressed onward further east toward the river where his next snare was set up near the edge of the treeline, a place he knew beavers liked to stray. As luck would have it his trap had caught quite a fat one within its noose, and though age was obvious in the greying around the creature's face it too looked to be in quite healthy condition. Reaching down he undid the knot that tethered the snare to a tree and pulled the noose from the beaver's neck, the frayed old line absently tossed aside as it would not last through another use. Once again the quarry was inspected for sickness, infection, and infestation before it was handed to the slave for him to carry, sanguine sights settling upon the male a moment longer this time. "Tell me. Are you a slave of Salsola or do you belong–"

A sound across the river promptly hushed his words, his dark ears twitching as he turned his attention to where the distinct snapping of twigs underfoot was coming from. Swiftly the dark beast drew his poison laced blade from its sheath and held it firmly in his hand, his soaring frame ducking down as his unarmed hand waved at the slave to do the same. The river Pictou marked the eastern border of the thistle kingdom, he knew this well, and though the pack was a secretive one it was more than obvious where their borders lie. Scent alone should have told whoever or whatever it was to turn away, but the sound was close, very close, much too close for his liking. With all of his senses altered, Scorpius waited, ruby reds scanning the trees for any sign of someone or something to come charging across the shallows.
