Measure Twice, Cut Once

Elsie's first day of being in Casa went pretty well, in her opinion. She had done a little business, but one specific person hadn't shown up yet, and Elsie was excited to see her again. She remembered having met Lola a couple months prior and the female had seemed interested in what she could make, specifically things from leather.

So, today, Elsie spread the leather out a bit more so it was easily examined. She also picked out a few sleeves that were already made, and she thought they would be the right length for Lola, as far as she could remember. The female' slight fur and bright red hair had been gorgeous, and Elsie thought something light blue would look lovely on her. The sleeves started light and got a little darker at the end. It was something she had done by accident one time, and then practiced to do it again. The skirt had the same fading with a little bit of dark green at the bottom.

After setting these out, Elsie went over to check on Carl the llama who was happily grazing nearby the cart. She never had to tie him since he had never made an attempt at wandering off, except the one time he was lured by a female llama. Elsie gave him a pass on that one. The female had been a lovely cream color, after all. Otherwise, why would he run away from the Luperci who usually fed him tasty treats?

Once everything was rearranged how she wanted it, Elsie tipped her head back and called for Lola, hoping she was actually in the territory since the d'Artisian hadn't actually let her know when she would be coming. Carl glanced over at her when her call ended and the went back to nibbling the grass.

d’Artagnan was scampering about her feet, the teen keen to keep up with his “mommy” as she sprinted around the training ring, retrieving stray arrows that hadn’t quite made their mark. Knives are so much easier, she groaned when d’Art finally caught up to sink his fangs into an ankle. She gave a sharp cry, making grabby hands for the calico tom as he skittered to the side. You’re too old for that! She squealed in dismay, frowning playfully as she rubbed the sore bite mark on her leg. Ne’re too old for fun! The cat retorted in his British lilt. It appeared that all his young life and time spent with both Lola and Alistair had morphed his voice into sounding more like their own. He may have been born in Quebec, but he could easily be mistaken for a feline from England.

How about instead of biting my legs, you help pick up arrows, huh? She huffed, straightening back up with another groan when a familiar voice called on the breeze. Lola’s face immediately brightened and she dropped her bundle of arrows to the ground. d’Art meowed in question, head cocking to the side as his own ears caught the girl’s voice. Elsie is here! The Veleno exclaimed, beckoning for the cat to follow as she darted towards the training ground fence and athletically launched herself over. Landing on running feet, she took off as a silver blur streaking back into town.

You came! She squealed, startling the llama by accident though her chuckling hands rose to calm the tall beast, her silvery eyes however were fixed on the friend she’d made back in Cercatori. The calico skidded to a halt into the backs of Lola’s legs, curious ocean blues peering out from behind a muscled calf to study the other girl and the various cloths and leather stretched out on the ground before her.

“Oh, Carl,” Elsie giggled as the llama’s head shot up. If he was in danger, she wouldn’t find his reaction funny, but since Lola was not a threat to them, Elsie felt free to laugh at him. It was probably the most excitement he’d had in a long time, other than getting to know a whole bunch of new sheep instead of just her own two that he had known since he was a baby. He had settled into his new home quickly enough, though, as had her sheep.

“Of course I came!” she grinned at Lola, “and I brought lots of leather so I can make you stuff.” Ever the professional, Elsie always made sure to use proper words like ‘stuff’ and ‘things’ while describing her wares. “Plenty of leather, I think, and lots of different fabrics to choose from.” That much was obvious, of course, and then Elsie spotted the cat behind Lola’s legs.

“Oh, and I bet I even have something for you,” she said, flitting over to the cart where a couple of bags sat. From one she pulled a long, thick string, which was similar to yarn although not quite that thick. Elsie then rummaged around the second bag, which held supplies to make necklaces and other jewelry.

“So how have you been doing?” Elsie glanced over at Lola then looked into the bag with a frown, unable to find what she was looking for. “Ah-hah!” She pulled out one feather and then stuck her hand back into the bag to pull out two more, each of different sizes. She quickly tied the feathers together with the string and then dangled them to the ground in front of her. “Whatcha think?” She grinned again, hoping the cat would like the new toy. Esther had toys like these around her house, which was where Elsie got the idea. Some of them were on sticks like a fishing pole, which made playing even easier.

Sorry! Lola snickered an apology, coo’ing in between giggles to get the llama to return to his indulgent grazing, before beaming back at the dappled female. Oooh! She tittered excitedly in delight, she’d never had any leather garments to call her own, but she trusted that Elsie could put her in something nice. And I’m a sucker for fabric, the Veleno confessed with a comical smirk, eyes widening when her friend’s attention turned to the cat. Oh! This is d’Artagnan, I found the little guy in one of our streams last summer, she informed the Artisan, watching her curiously as she continued to rummage about in her cart. The tom rubbed his head affectionately against Lola’s leg, before bravely taking a few steps forward towards the stranger.

It’s okay d’Art, she giggled, head cocking slightly as she pondered a good answer. Oh you know...same old, same old, she teased. My mate and I just returned from a diplomacy trip. Quite tiring the whole thing, but it was nice to see the other packs, she admitted thoughtfully, startling then at Elsie’s sudden outburst, but erupting into another fit of giddy giggles when the other’s question barely came out, a blur of multiple colors pouncing forward and hastily trying to paw a cluster of feather’s into his mouth. d’Art! She gasped with mirth, it had been awhile since she’d seen the cat so wound up.

He pranced comically around the feathers before darting towards them and rocketing away, small mouth opened in a silent pant as he head butted Elsie’s calf, a garbled purr meow given in thanks. I think he likes it, Lola replied with a grin, seeing the cat’s pupils grow into large discs of black before he pounced on the bundled feathers again. How have you been? The Veleno asked the other with a chuckle.

Grinning, Elsie watched d’Arte’s reaction to her feathery toy creation. “I think so, too!” She was glad he seemed to like it so much and reached down, intending to scratch behind one of his ears before looking back up at Lola and standing straight. Later, she could attach the toy to a stick so it would have even more reach for him to chase around.

“Oh, I’ve been pretty good! I’ve mostly been preparing for this trading trip, and after I’m done here, I’m spending some time back at home before going to Cour des Miracles.” Of course, that would mean finding her way to the pack, and Elsie was not so great with directions. It was easy to get to Casa di Cavalieri because Valerie had escorted her from Cercatori d’Arte. Hopefully she or Carl would remember how to get home from here. It couldn’t be that hard; she just had to make sure not to make a wrong turn somewhere.

“Where all did you go for your trip? I’m always looking for new places to go trading!” Elsie thought this might be a good way to learn of the packs her great-aunt did not know much about. Esther was great, but Elsie knew that she had not done much traveling lately, so her knowledge of the packs was a bit limited. That didn’t bother the younger Hennamin; it simply meant she had to get her information from somewhere else.

“And of course, I don’t know where anything is around here,” she continued. “Really I think the only reason I even made it here was because Valerie brought me. Otherwise I’d have probably managed to miss the place completely and gotten lost.” Elsie giggled, and then looked swiftly to Carl who quickly stopped nodding to turned his head away. “I saw you nodding!” She guessed that he understood the words ‘gotten lost’ and saw fit to make fun of her.
