There are many cumbersome ways to kill a man

Okay, I'm gonna say Vesper told Cartier to meet her at the random tree -- and you can decide why, like if you want them to do some sparring or hunting or what. <3

Flecks of mud spattered her pale belly as she loped through the marshy grassland, ear swiveling to catch the distant cries of the migrating geese. Blue eyes swept the sky and the landscape as she paused, chest swelling with breath -- but no carrion-reek or telltale odor of wing-and-talon greeted her. Any chances of spotting Gehazi today seemed slim -- though she accepted this and trotted onward. Though she'd seen the golden eagle soaring above Inferni a few times since Ombre's death (the irony not lost on her), she'd yet to catch a closer glimpse. But she would wait.

Now, the coywolf ran to the edge of a flooded section of moorland, her light weight carried easily through the water -- though she was careful to avoid the suction of the deepest mud, knowing many heavy animals had fallen prey to its trap. She paused under a tree -- dead, lightning-charred from long ago, no more than a jut of sharp wood without branches -- and sat there, curling her bushy tail closer to her.

Cartier had made a stop into the chapel before his planned meeting. Even though his sister fussed at him for not being pious enough he was still devout. He made daily stops in at the chapel even if it was only for a few minutes at a time. He couldn't sit there for hours like his sister seemed able to. He just didn't like being cooped up for too long. He liked being able to get out and run about. It was why he was glad for the warming of the weather. It gave him longer periods to be out and about, the sun staying out to allow him to do so.

Cartier gave a wide berth to the Moors, having already managed to trap himself there previously. He didn't care to chance it again even if crossing directly across them would get him to the meeting spot much quicker. Versace would be proud to learn that he had erred on the side of caution. But then she also might remark that his latest penance had stuck with him, and it most certainly did. Or well, it physically stuck with him even if it wasn't the mental cause for his caution. His back had fresh abrasions on it from the whipping he got, his flesh having been split under each lick. This wasn't the first time since his back was littered with scars in various stages of healing, some older and some fresher.

He gave a bark of greeting as he spotted Vesper waiting for him. He paused a moment to shift down into lupus form, wincing as he did so. Once he had down shifted he quickly trotted over, high stepping when he felt himself tread through what simply turned out to be a puddle. "Am I late for the lesson?" He asked as he approached, having got on and off training in unarmed combat, as well as hunting, from Vesper since he was young. He moved close to her and made to nudge his head against her shoulder in a display of affection. She, as well as others, had pretty much taken him in and looked after him since the death of his mother and he felt close to her for that. "How are Kyrios and Vicira doing?" He thought to ask after the children that he had practically grew up alongside. .

Maeriia actually left the pack -- I don't think it was explicitly announced anywhere or if she's still on the rank table. But if you think Cartier wouldn't know that then I can edit the post so Ves tells him; I just skipped over mentioning it this time.

Her student barked, and Vesper let out a yap of her own before turning blue eyes to the mud as the other shifted. She still wasn't comfortable watching Luperci contort into strange shapes between forms, even after a few years herself of being one. She didn't think she would ever get used to it.

The taller, slim male trotted toward her as water splashed from his footfalls, and Vesper wagged her tail at his approach. "No, I haven't had to wait long," she answered, nuzzling him as he bumped his head against her shoulder. Keen eyes noted the scars laced across his back, and she suppressed a scowl. Many times she felt she'd argued with Willam's children -- Versace, at least -- about how their "penance" was wrong. She'd changed her arguments to imply that the young adults wouldn't be fit to serve Inferni with such abused bodies. But serving Inferni, serving God -- Ves didn't know which was more important to the children.

"They're fine," Ves said briefly of her own two. She almost went on to marvel that they were already over a year old now, but so was Cartier -- and she recognized that gushing about her children woudn't fit the tone of the lesson. She smirked and stepped from him, shaking her coat, the lightest areas still flecked with mud. "I thought we could spar on more treacherous ground today," she said, and grinned. "Not dangerous, just muddy -- a place to slip or get a paw sucked in the ground." Her belief was that you couldn't always choose where you fought, and her reverence for the art of balance in her body themed most of their lessons. Cartier was a good enough fighter, but practice sharpened even her own skills.

310 → Tis fine. I edited her name out of my post.

Cartier was warmed by the nuzzling, feeling like part of the family every time that she did that. He could remember being a pup and getting in line for affection when the children of the leaders lined up for it. He had tried to integrate himself into the family since he had lost his own mother. The leaders were the adult figures that had been leftover in his young life. He was glad that even though he was getting older now that he wasn't being pushed away, glad to not have outgrown the subleader's affection.

He knew that Vesper would fuss about his knew scars, even if she wasn't saying it out loud he knew that she still didn't approve of them. He had tried to explain before that it was the only connection to his mother that he had left to him. Her religion had been everything to her and so he was trying to honor her memory by sticking to it even if he didn't hold it as close to heart as his sister did.

He gave a nod of his head, glad that they were doing fine. "I've already got stuck in this already." He said with a grin on his lips as he glanced to the mud. He was vaguely worried about getting stuck once again but he was going to trust Vesper's judgment. "If I get hurt then I'm going to tell Myrika on you." He said, playfully teasing her. He wasn't really going to tattle. It wasn't like he was unused to pain. His back was a testament to that. Injuries and pain weren't knew things to him. Accidents happened during sparring sometimes and he knew that. "So how did you want to get started?" He asked as he focused his attention back on the lesson at hand. .

Sorry for the wait... I didn't forget about this but have been slow in general lately. Hopefully this short post is enough since they're just sparring.

Vesper smirked at the other's nod toward the muddy ground. She opened her mouth to assure him she wouldn't let him get stuck for real -- but a laugh escaped her jaws instead as he quipped about her mate. "Hmm, my paws are tied, then," she mused, muzzle crinkling with a grin. She wagged her tail at him, happy at the banter and her friendship with the young coyote.

But she knew he wasn't serious -- and Ves wouldn't try to really hurt him. It did not mean, however, that she'd play fair.

Cartier asked how she wanted to get started, and Vesper grinned. "Like this," she said, her only warning, and leaped toward him, paws outstretched to knock him off balance and jaws aiming to close in his scruff.

334 → You are fine hun, you can take however long you need. No rush on my part.

His teasing was the equivalent of playfully pitting one parent against the other. And that was the exact way that he saw it as well. He knew that Vesper wouldn't take the threat seriously, and even if he did do such a thing then he knew that Myrika wouldn't ever actually act against her mate. Instead it was more likely that he would be interrogated until the truth of the matter was rooted out until the complaint was brushed aside as just the consequence of training and sparring. Besides Vesper had never hurt him any worse than his sister managed to do to his back. Any time that Vesper had caused him harm it had been accidental and nothing too serious.

Cartier waited for Vesper to add on and explain what she wanted to cover in today's lesson but before he knew it was tumbling over and teeth scrapped against the tender flesh on the back of his neck. "Hey! No fair. I wasn't ready yet." He grumbled out the words. Of course it was just another life lesson. Your opponent didn't always wait for you to be ready before launching an attack. It was just another thing that he had to keep in mind should he ever be in actual combat.

The boy struggled on the ground, trying to get his paws back beneath him once again in order to try and secure some form of leverage so that he might be able to attempt to dislodge the female from him. Of course since she wished to play dirty it gave Cartier inspiration. He didn't have his hands but it didn't stop him from scrabbling at the mud and try to kick it up to try and get some to splatter against Vesper's face in an attempt to try and distract her. It was a desperate attempt but he was afraid of doing something that might inadvertently cause injury. His care for Vesper made him overly cautious during their lessons together. .

Her teeth closed in the thick fur of his nape. Vesper's tail beat the air as Cartier complained, but she didn't bother to voice her lesson, knowing the boy would understand. He was smart enough, and she was as proud of him as she would be one of her own.

The coyote struggled to get his footing as Vesper fought to push him into the mud. She wouldn't bother trying to use her weight in most fights since she was small, but she was careful to use various techniques against Cartier. Wolves used their weight, and while Ves preferred to dart in and out, snapping and using her excellent balance, not every opponent would fight that way. It meant going easier on him, but she didn't worry.

Mud flew at her, and she squeezed her eyes shut, her grip loosening for just an instant. She tried to bite down again, but her hesitation gave him time to move—and with mud covering her face and her eyes shut against it, gave him an opportunity to attack.

Yes, Cartier had understood the lesson just as soon as the protest had left his lips. It would serve to remind to always be aware of those around him. This proved just how easily he could be taken in a fight since he hadn't had his guard up. But then again it wasn't like he thought that he had to since he was within the borders of the clan. Granted he was sparring and he should have known better.

Cartier was getting a face full of mud before he was able to gain a slight advantage. His tactic had ended up working and he was able to scrabble out from under the older female once she had loosened her grip on him. He was up and panting once he had gained his feet again. He turned to face his trainer and felt a stab of guilt at seeing her like that. Still he had to push down that emotion.

He lunged in for his own attack. He went for the side, seeking to snap at her shoulder, bringing his body up parallel to hers in an attempt to prevent against another attack against himself. He figured that if he brought his head just level with her shoulder and mimicked her stance with the rest of his body then she wouldn't be able to really reach him, at least not to obtain a grip on him, should she whip her head around to get at him. He was learning and tried to remain things from previous lessons with her, such as not leaving himself open to an attack. Of course this was all well and good in practice where the stakes weren't fatal. It was actually remembering these lessons when he was in the heat of battle. Not only did he need to commit them to mental memory but to muscle memory as well so that he would be able to act without considering what it was that he was doing. .

Sorry for wait! & I love Cartier, he is so sweet ♥

The dark tan coyote squirreled away from her and spun, tongue lolling from his jaws. Vesper shook the mud from her face and squinted blue eyes at him, bracing her limbs to either stand her ground or flee.

He lunged -- and Vesper jumped to the side, but with his body parallel to hers, she had little room to attack. Growling between smiling teeth, she sought to create distance between them, instead; there was no way she would land a good blow while they were flank-to-flank. Quickly springing up away from the mud, she sprinted over the marshy flats, only to circle back around again and leap toward him. She bared her teeth and sought to snap down at one of his limbs.

Cripple an opponent's paw, and you generally crippled their chances at victory.

300 → Thanks, I'm really glad you like him.

His tactic had succeeded. Even though Vesper had moved away from him she hadn't spun directly on him and ended up attacking. His tail wagged happily behind him and he gave a playful little growl in return. He grinned as Vesper sprinted away and he barked at her. The young male figured that she was giving up and running off so he pranced about happily in place, thinking falsely that he had won.

His premature celebrating had him not paying attention to what was going on about him and so he didn't realize until it was too late that Vesper had returned. Even when he noticed her coming back he had thought that it was to congratulate him on his victory. Of course that didn't happen as she lunged for him yet again.

He yelped, more in surprise than in pain, as his limb was grabbed in the subleader's teeth. The youth ended up panicking and tried to jerk away. He ended up only injuring himself by doing so. He yelped once again, this time in obvious pain. "I give! I give!" He spoke quickly in hopes that she would turn loose of him so that he could see exactly what he had done to himself. All he knew for certain was that he could feel the warmth of blood spilling down his limb. It was a feeling he could pinpoint well without having to see it, all of his paid penances had taught him the feel of it. He doubted that it would be any more severe than any penance that he had ever paid. But still, he hadn't expected to actually be injured during sparring. Of course he couldn't blame Vesper for the injury since ti was something that he had ended up doing to himself. .
