forest oasis. Feng is seeing things

Watch out! Feng bolted upright, his eyes alert and black ears twitching at the sudden intrusion to his midday nap. The sun shone brightly, filtering through the flowered trees as lazy clouds dotted the sky. A slight breeze played with Feng's fur before passing over the oasis lake. Feng was sure he had been alone at the start of his nap, but the voice had been so clear. A female birds twittering voice, high and sweet as it played with the words in high speech. But the urgency in the voice had Feng's heckles rising as his amber gaze darted around, startled and wide.

Behind! The clouded leopard twisted around, springing to his feet as the last syllable rand clear as bell. Standing behind him was a dark canine, teeth protruding from the wolf's lips as it's blood red eyes bore a hole into Feng's very soul. His fingers were wrapped around a curved skinning knife and a cruel smile played on the wolf's face. Feng began to shake, his ears pinning back against his head as he showed off his own dagger like teeth. A hiss erupted from the leopard's jaws as he backed away from the intruder.

How did he manage to get past the boarder unnoticed, unharnessed? This was the same male who Feng had seen several weeks ago, and he was back. A foul stench permitted the air, the scent of rotting meat clung to the canine's fur. The wolf advanced and Feng darted to the side, narrowly missing the blade as it sliced through the air. The wolf changed instantly, charging forward in a monstrous secui form that was as big as a bear. One of the wolf's talons stretched forward, catching Feng in the leg and causing him to topple to the ground. In an instant the wolf was on Feng and pain shot through the leopards entire body. He screamed, a blood curdling sound that Feng had never made before.

Gone. Feng opened his eyes, slowly and carefully. He was curled up in a ball, his fur standing on end as his claws dug into the ground. The wolf was gone and so were his wounds. Amber eyes darted back and forth, confused and unsure of what to do. The wolf was no where to be seen, his scent had completely disappeared. "He…hello?" Feng looked for the bird, the owner of the tiny chittering voice. However, all the birds in the area had fled at Feng's screams.

After spending so much time away from home, Elsie decided that it was time she spent more time exploring the packlands around Thornbury. She had not done a whole lot of it so far, other than some walks with Esther, because she wanted to get her trade routes going. Now, though, it seemed like a good time because there was a bit of a lull in her trips.

The lands looked so different now than her brief tours before without any snow. She barely recognized some of the places Esther had taken her before, which were admittedly few, not that she minded. She didn’t want her great-aunt to push herself too hard after all.

Elsie walked through the trees, looking up at the canopy while listening to the birds chirp when suddenly a scream pierced the relative silence. The birds went quiet and Elsie froze. The sound had been completely foreign, but also terrified. For a moment, she was unsure of what to do, but what if someone was in trouble? The sound was certainly from inside the packlands. If there was an intruder, she needed to report it to someone who could actually do something. So, she took off in the direction the sound had come from. Trees rushed by in a blur as Elsie ran, looking for a wolf or some other canine, although she couldn’t be sure what had made the sound, although Elsie would never have guessed it came from the pack member she came across: a big spotted cat. Elsie stopped nearby but at what she hoped was a respectable distance and quickly looked him over. He seemed terrified, and his voice only showed it more.

“Hi there,” Elsie said; she had made no effort to hide the sound of her approach, so she hoped she wouldn’t startle him. As she spoke, the coywolf looked around, trying to see what might have the cat so distressed. "Are you okay?"

"Gone. Gone. Gone." Each word echoed in his head and rang in his ears like a gentle bell. Feng's eyes darted around and his body twisted in circles as he looked for the little bird. "Safe. Gone. Safe and gone." Black ears twisted as he tried to pinpoint the voice. It sounded like it was behind him, but every time he turned he couldn't see the bird. A dull headache began to throb in the leopards temples but he ignored the slight pain.

Feng sat back on his haunches, lifting his upper body into the air as he tried to get a higher view from the ground. Nothing. Dropping back down, Feng looked about confused and unsure of what had just transpired. In his confused state, Feng didn't even notice the stranger's approach. When the voice of a female broke through Feng's confusion, he jumped and screamed. His fur stood on end and he backpedaled into the tree. Feng's mouth swung open in a half hiss to reveal his dagger like canines. "Gone. Girl. Gone. Gone. Okay?"

"Gone…" The fur along Feng's neck relaxed and he closed his mouth. Wide eyes stared at the female canine and he gave a quick huff as he tried to calm his beating heart. "Ah… yeah… I'm fine. There's just… a uh, bird..." Feng glanced down at his paws as his ears folded back. "Wolf. Gone." Feng glanced up once again in vain to try and locate the chittering creature. "I can't find it," he mumbled.
