Lead your lambs

[p. Vesper][Thread Prompt]

Thread Prompt - Inferni's "resident" deer herd has entered its calving season. While the herd is wary at this time, calves are easy meals for many predators. Snag one!

Her belly growled and she looked up from her haphazardly collected bundles of papers and charcoal scribbles. All that time spent on researching the books that Søren had left to her, gave her some ideas on how to set up a rudametary forge, and she had already found the perfect place for it. The matter was supplies, getting them, and then building the damn thing. That took time and effort, and she was very impatient. She had stared at these books for a couple of hours and her eyes watered. Even the light from the window seemed dim in her room. And her belly had growled so she was ready to be done.

Happily, she put aside her notes, got off the floor and left her room - having closed her door after she did. Privacy was wonderful, thankfully the doors still worked in this mess of a rotting building. She had not bothered to put on any of her clothes, either; what was the point in that? She stepped outside and inhaled deeply. It smelled like spring outside, a much better smell than some of the mold and mildew scents she got whiffs of inside.

Body changing, she came into her two legged form, something she wore very little but still felt natural as can be. She was hungry, oh yes, and she wanted big meat. But easy meat; she was far too lazy to go for stag or powerful game. Annabeth gave a quick howl - very wolfish- asking anyone interested in a hunt to join her. And then she scooted off, looking for food, nose eagerly sniffing out the scent of prey animals.

Vesper is in Secui form, and Vici is in Lupus.

She did not heed the call, at first -- while curious about the young de Fonte and happy to socialize with others in her clan, Vesper was not the type to hunt large prey in a group. It wasn't to say she couldn't, but she preferred rabbits and voles to struggling with elk or deer. She'd become very good at select prey and wasn't all that hungry, either. She dropped her head again -- at least until a second voice, melodic and low but feminine, joined the first. Recognizing her daughter's voice, she hesitated -- and decided it wouldn't be too odd for her to join them. Since Vicira had moved out of the schoolhouse, they hadn't spent as much time together.

The small coywolf shifted first, stiff grey hairs standing at her nape as claws dug into the earth and her shape grew. She was more suited for chasing deer like this, and she covered ground quickly as she galloped toward the source of the first cry. She dodged trees and roots and slowed as the scent of the former Cavalieri reached her nose. Quiet and careful, she approached.

"Hey," Vesper greeted shortly, and lifted her head as a slimmer grey shape loped into view, tail wagging at the sight of her mother.

Vicira pressed her ears back then grinned at the straw-colored coywolf. "Hi, Anna."

At first she wondered if she was going to have to try for big game on her own, and risk herself in the process. But then came the ringing tones of another coyote, familiar to her, kind of. She grinned at the sound and then placed herself to wait for the female to come join her. She could smell other coyotes in the air but had not been good about recognizing who meant what, just yet. One stood out to her and she almost looked surprised as she turned to see the very battle-scarred woman in her hulking form approach her.

Shortly after came her daughter, and Anna looked from daughter to mother, tail wagging at the pair. Three would be good to bring down something bigger, or even more of the smaller things. "Hi, Miss Vesper, Vicira," she greeted, none too shy. There was confidence, but there was always confidence there in her.

"So I'm thinking something bigger, deer maybe. Bring some back for anyone else to share, or for us if we're peckish." She neglected to say she was very hungry, though the growls of her belly might give it away. "Is there a herd we can check? They're makin' babies now, right?" she questioned, her gaze naturally looking toward the older, more experienced woman.

The Sepsari greeted them, and Vesper allowed a smile to soften the edges of a scarred face. She knew that Annabeth would be an asset to them with her raising -- and so far she'd proven loyal to Inferni. She liked initiative, too, and the coywolf's suggestion of a hunt came without further preamble. She nodded, glancing across at her daughter -- smaller in her Lupus form, but long-legged, eager.

"Yeah -- I've seen quite a few fawns in the area. I'm sure we could get away with taking what we can find." The deer herd flourished where more coyotes chased rabbits and mice, and so Vesper was certain there would be no danger of driving the Inferni deer extinct. She flicked her tail, instinctively taking charge as she turned and walked west toward the moorland. "We should find some at the fringe of the woods, grazing by the meadow. If they haven't hidden their babies, at least."

She paused after a few strides to glance back at the girls, not fully leading now -- because it was Annabeth's idea, she would let her take the reins if she wished. Vicira, meanwhile, seemed content to follow the other female.

Vesper gave her the rundown on their cervidae population, making her mind click and clack as she thought. Hidden nests of fawns and mothers? That sounded almost too easy, though they often seemed to nest in brambly places and tight areas. Still, smaller coyotes could carry out a fawn but that seemed like too much work. Surely the already eager on their feet fawns would be with the herds, playing and taking to their mothers' teats.

"Deer it is then," she said in agreement, not looking to Vicira for her confirmation. Two trumped one, but she did see the way that Vesper paused, having begun to lead them. Anna was not as familiar with Inferni as she had been with Casa - but even that had been rather poorly explored - so she had figured that she would follow. It seemed that the opportunity to show leadership presented itself to her, and she slipped around Vesper to lead them toward the meadow.

Soon enough, the smell of deer wafted on the air column and the golden female paused. "I think we have some," she said softly, unsure of how far from them they were. She slipped between trees, knowing the other two women would fan out as well. The brush hid her golden pelt and the shadows made her nothing more than an bright, earthy mound.

A small herd, relatively, grazed in the opening. Sometimes one or two would pause and look around, almost alternating. Anna could smell them, and it made her belly long for meat. Her eyes wandered. Near the edge stood a doe and fawn, the two close to the main group but the female had seemingly found some spring flowers to nibble. Easy prey? They could bolt, but maybe Vicira could help startle the group towards the two bigger females. Slipping back, Anna found the other female and whispered as softly as she could to her.

Vesper was relaxed in her rank. She had proven herself many times over and was happy to allow others a chance to do the same. Any opportunity to see her clanmates in action would help. She fell into stride with her daughter following Annabeth -- not speaking to the quiet girl, but letting unspoken affection pass between them in brief brushes of fur.

She slowed as the forest grew thinner at the edge of the meadow, and she too sought to disappear into the woods and grass around them -- her vanilla-colored fur and darker accents of brown and grey blending with the foliage around them well enough. She was careful to keep still, less familiar with her Secui form and aware of its disadvantage of size as well as the obvious advantages -- she didn't want to make sound with a misplaced foot or knock of a shoulder against the bushes.

Vicira settled on her belly to wait, instead -- her greys not blending with much of anything but fog and stone -- but pricked her ears as Annabeth padded around to whisper to her. Vesper watched the deer, confident she would either be filled in or understand the plan in a second, and only looked up as Vicira disappeared back into the shadows and trotted off quickly.

It did not take long for the female to reappear -- this time off in the distance, and coming closer. The first white tail flagged, and Vesper stood as Vicira rushed and chased the small band of animals toward the trees.

Vicira agreed, quickly moving to the position that Annabeth suggested. With her being upwind, the herd was suddenly nervous, anxious. It was obvious they would bolt as the grey female burst from the from the underbrush and started to chase the stupid deer forward. They panicked for a moment and then began to run right into the maw of the waiting Infernians. A smile was wrapped around the golden girl's maw as she watched the pair she scouted first, the doe forced to nudge her fawn along as it had not been paying much attention to the moment.

The moments of delay would cost them, figured the golden girl as she nudged her nose in the direction of the oncoming deer. She moved through the trees to avoid the rush of the small herd, to better see the pair at the end. Vicira was coming at them with the tail end of the group of deer, the whites of their eyes showing plain.

Anna ran from the cover and at the two deer from their side. The doe began to run away from the group that seemed to disappear into the trees, the fawn blindly following the mother. Fear was easy to taste on the air and Anna knew it had been smart to have the grey female startle the herd. Vesper was in her larger form, and was indeed larger than she, with all her wolf blood and heavy breeding. Had she been in her secui form, too, they might have taken on the larger part of the herd. Instead, Anna pelted after the doe and fawn before the young creature tripped over feet it had little experience with using, and quickly bit through his throat. The creature was left to die, since there was till a doe to kill.

The deer bounded toward them, and some veered and disappeared into the forest even as Vesper rushed from it. She spotted the fawn as Anna zeroed in on the creature, which tripped over spindly limbs and fell to a deep bite from the wolf. It was abandoned to bleed, though from the corner of her eye Ves saw Vicira race over, grasping its neck in her jaws and thrashing to end its life faster.

Vesper pushed herself faster as the doe's white tail bobbed ahead, massive paws landing in long strides and claws hooking the earth to roll the world beneath her. She heard Annabeth's breath and footfalls at her side, but like this was faster, larger—and quickly she reached the deer, her head by its flank, and veered to crash into its legs.

The doe fell, and Vesper whirled and sank her teeth into its belly, while thrashing hooves hit her shoulder and jaw.

The fawn was abandoned to die, of course. It was as good as dead as it bled. Vesper glanced back and so Anna did too, to see the third female in their hunting party dealing a true killing blow to the fawn. The female would rejoin them soon enough, but the pair of them had the doe before them to kill, and Anna's focus shifted to it. It smelled like fear, and it sent the predator in her racing in hunger.

Vesper was ahead of her and clearly ready to take down the doe. That bobbing tail annoyed the golden female and she wanted it dead and filling her grumbling belly. Vesper suddenly jutted into the side of the cervid, crashing it to the ground. The snap of teeth made the golden hybrid stop behind the woman only to see the hooves strike out the Centurion.

The de Fonte growled loud, an angry noise at the sight of the stupid creature lashing out at her better. Loyalty for leadership bred and taught to her forced her strike at the doe's throat. Her teeth sunk deep into the neck, feeling the pulse of blood, full of life. Her hunger peaked and stung at her mind. Annabeth clamped her teeth down hard, biting through vein and flesh, and then jerking hard to rip the flesh free. The doe still flailed, spraying blood from her still pulsing carotids onto the canines that came to feast upon her. It was hot, warm, and tasted of iron.

Licking the blood flecks from her maw, the female turned to Vesper and Vicera, who had arrived shortly after killing her fawn. "Are you alright, Centurion?" she asked thickly, lapping at her teeth. "Anything broken?" The doe may have been but a small cervid, but its hooves were still sharp and dangerous.

Teeth sank into the soft belly, and Vesper tasted blood. She shut her eyes as the delicate, two-toed hoof struck her face, glancing off her cheekbone. Her teeth tightened in flesh as she squinted and wrinkled her muzzle, but shortly the wheat-colored form of the coywolf joined her—and more blood spattered the pair of hunters as Annabeth bit down. The animal kicked and cried, still, but shock wore in shortly—and before long, the doe stilled.

Vesper licked her muzzle and stepped back, plopping her rear in the grass and panting before blue eyes wandered to the Sepsari. I'm fine, she answered. Silvery Vicira crept up to her and licked her cheek regardless, and Vesper squinted her eye but maintained a smile. I'll be bruised in the morning, but that's it. She butted her head against her daughter affectionately and grinned at Annabeth. That was fun, though. Don't usually go after deer.

Vicira waved her tail. Do either of you want the fawn? she asked. I might take it to Myrimom so she can skin it. A glance at the doe confirmed that it was probably too damaged to get good hide out of—and it wasn't so soft and rare as the fawn's pelt.
