Meet the Pups!

POSTED: Sat Sep 13, 2014 2:52 pm

The new mother and father had been very secretive and quite since the birth of the pups. The New Dawn princess had been more protective and feral than she had originally believed she would be. Anyone who drew near the den was met with a warning growl from the mocha mother who was not accepting visitors. Even in the birthing process she had only allowed Lucia in to check on the pups medically for a brief moment before pushing her out of the den.

Even among the mated pair there had been tension for the first couple of days. The pups had been so tiny and vulnerable that Veyra had instinctively wrapped her body protectively around them, limiting how much Callum was allowed to touch them. After a few days of constant feedings and cleaning she had granted him full access to their new family members, deciding that they were all healthy and strong enough to cope with more than just mother tending to them.

They had grown rapidly over the last eighteen days. Four handsome and sturdy boys now tumbled around the den with weak newly opened eyes. Much to the couple’s delight they had begun to develop milk teeth and had taken easily to eating regurgitated meals as of a few days ago. It was at this point that Veyra decided it was about time they met with the rest of the pack.

Although the four little ones only squeaked and grumbled, and they were still mostly blind and deaf, she trusted that those who came would not harm her precious pups. With Callum’s help and encouragement they carried the four bundles of different colors to the mouth of the den and together called for anyone who wanted to meet the new pack members.

It had been a while since Veyra had given birth and since that day Lucia had not imposed her presence upon the Damaichu princess, knowing that her friend wanted solitude and quiet while her vulnerable newborns grew stronger. She had been by frequently to drop off food for her Sister but beyond a low bark or two to let Vey know she and her children were being taken care of Lucia hadn't attempted to enter the den again.

But she still felt honored beyond what words and action could say, she had seen them born and had seen them at their most fragile. Every time she thought back to it she ended up choked and had to wipe at her eyes. Her own mother had chased her away when it was time for her siblings to be born but Veyra had let her see them so young, not even Callum had seen them before her. Lucia shook her head and brushed her muzzle against a paw as she trotted through the foliage. Instincts ran strong within her, and it told her to wait, to be patient.

Also in the last few days Lucia had undergone a strange change of her own. For the first time in her life she had felt the thrum of life flow through her and the filling of her breasts with milk. At first she had been confused and then again the instincts had writhed inside of her and told her that it was okay and normal. She just knew that her body was readying to be a surrogate mother to Veyra's puppies when the real mother was absent. She could feed and look after them just as well and with her they would be safe, secure, Lucia would kill or die for them if she had to.

Maybe it was the culmination of it all but it left her feeling very feral and basic and since their birth Lucia hadn't shifted from her lupus form. She had hunted as a wolf and lived as a wolf should do. She had even chased some of the more curious Dawners away from the birthing den herself. She had slept close to the birthing den too, a scant two hundred yards from its entrance. She was thus very close by when finally Veyra and Callum called for the pack to greet their newborns. She wasted no time in turning around and loping back towards the dug out hole in the ground.

Of course it should make sense that she be the first one there, their sitter, the one to teach them about the world along with their mother and father. Unlike during their birth this time Lucia couldn't contain her excitement and the aura of calm was completely lost as the Delta female danced closer and closer on light paws. her tail was swaying back and forth so fast it was almost a blur and she couldn't stop herself from whining, flattening herself against the floor as she approached Veyra. And if the female would let her then she'd lick her Sister's muzzle, huffing softly in her throat.

The four boys were so different from the tiny babes that she had seen barely twenty sun and moons ago, they were awake and alert and active. Their colors were so different from each other but in each one she could see Veyra and Callum and even Zalen.

Though she had wanted to check on the puppies, Fayne knew that Lucia was handling this one, and she was proud of her student for doing so. After the lessons and everything, it was always good to get some practical experience as well, and it was much more common to practice healing skills with minor scrapes than to help deliver new puppies.

In the meantime, Fayne reminded herself that if something was going wrong, she was sure Veyra and Callum would have sought help, either from her or from Lucia, so everything must have been going smoothly. She had lost track of how much time had gone by since they were born, and so Fayne was a bit surprised when the call came to come meet the puppies. She tried to count back the days and then just shrugged and exited the hut. If Veyra and Callum thought the puppies were ready, then they were.

When she arrived at the birthing den, she saw Lucia was already there. Fayne’s eyes scanned each puppy as she did a quick visual assessment. As expected, they looked perfectly healthy.

“They’re beautiful,” Fayne told the new parents with a smile, although she did not move to touch them, unsure of how Veyra would feel about that.

Faint gray ears swivelled when a call rang out among the territory. The howl was unmistakably coming from Veyra and her mate near their den. It’s about time they let us see them, Leela thought as she spun around eager to meet the newest additions to New Dawn. Back when Petra and Bertolt were much younger, Leela thought she wanted to be a pupsitter. However that turned out to be way more work than she thought and far less fun. Now that the Alphas pups were older, they were far more fun to play with. Nevertheless new life was something that interested Leela and she bounded elatedly towards the earthy mother and proud father.

Her sister Lucia was already there as was her former mentor, Fayne. Basically being the lowest ranked wolf of the group, she stifled her excitement to approach with submission and respect. When her bi-colored gaze finally fell upon the four little fluffy balls she was in awe of the darling creatures that the pair had created. She remembered how fat Veyra had been but it was still amazing that these four puppies had been inside her.

“Oh they are just too cute!” Leela exclaimed as she took a seat, “What'ch decide to name 'em?” At first glance neither boy looked related to another, each having different shades of eye and coat color and every one of them seemed to possess the most exotic and interesting markings.

Make no mistake, Callum had been a little hurt the first time he had been allowed to approach the pups and still got growled at. But he had quickly gotten over it the more interaction Veyra had allowed, and was looking forward to the day when he could rough and tumble with his boys. They were getting closer and closer to that, now that their eyes had opened, and Callum marveled at just how quickly they were growing up.

He was not certain he was ready to share their boys with the rest of the pack, but he did not fuss when Veyra brought it up to him; he knew it was time they met their extended family. And so he had assisted in carrying the boys from the den, sitting them nicely in a row while their mother sat near to keep an eye on the ones above-ground. When all four were present, he sat behind them with Veyra and raised his voice with his mate's to extend the invitation.

Lucia was, of course, the first to arrive, but then she had never been far away since their birth. He had occasionally spoken to her when she would leave food for Veyra, and had heard her chasing others away. He had hunted for himself while she sat with the chocolate princess. He trusted her with the most precious things in his world. As Lucia approached, Callum chuckled at how excited she seemed, her tail whipping from side to side and a whine on her lips. The display was clearly for Veyra, and so he turned his attention to the next visitors, Fayne and Leela.

He dipped his head in a sort of nod as Fayne complimented the family, “Thanks, Fayne.” Leela asked what the pups had been named, and he patted each pup on the head in turn with a gentle paw, starting with the ones in front of Veyra. His paw landed first on one whose fur was as red as Callum's mother's had been, or nearly, with cream markings, then on the light brown pup splotched with grey. “These are Eros and Marius Damaichu.” He moved on to the next pups, first the dark brown one with a cream mask whose base color closely mimicked both grandfathers, then to his yellow brother with his mottled red and grey back, the one Veyra had told him reminded her of her mother. “And these are Harlequin and Munroe Knight.” The expression on Cal's face through his recitation would never be mistaken for anything other than pride.

There was a certain spark felt when Callum joined in her call, and to her amusement the four little boys began to rumble in long tones, attempting to mimic their parents voices. It was no surprise to Veyra to see Lucia bounding towards them, after all her pack sister had been her midwife and protector during the princess’ most vulnerable hours. Even now the Damaichu daughter doubted she would be very far away until the pups were independent of their mother.

The new mother tensed up as the Amarok girl came bounding towards her and her family, even going as far as to flash her teeth in a warning before Lucia excitedly submitted, her tongue licking under the Gamma’s chin in an attempt to earn permission to come closer. After a few seconds of the display Veyra relaxed and bumped her muzzle against Lucia’s, a silent ‘okay’.

By the time she turned her eyes back up and her attention away from her midwife two more faces had arrived, Fayne and Lucia’s sister Leela. Her dark ears twisted towards her mate as he announced the boy’s names, her chest puffing in pride. Silently she leaned down and pressed on Quin’s back, urging him to move forward and towards Fayne. The obsidian boy didn’t need another cue, eagerly he stumbled forwards unsure where he was going but determined to get there.

sorry sorry!

Of course she would expect her bounding energy to be met with an uneasy feeling from the new mother and she gladly let Veyra's sharp look roll off of her back as though it had never happened. Although she was already such a gentle being Lucia had found all sorts of patience within herself in her dealings with Veyra over the last several months. She had put up with angry frustrated words as the pregnancy progressed into uncomfortableness and even a bite or two when she had been in the wrong place at the wrong time for the sake of her friend. Lucia had taken it all in and let it vanish, not allowing it to color her opinion of Veyra or Callum. That was her duty as a nuse-maid and an Omega at heart.

Not long behind her Fayne and her own sister Leela showed up too, Lucia had a tail wag for them both and a nose bump. Lucia had already spent just as much time with them as nearly their own parents and pulled back a little at that point, siting out of the way still with her tail thumping against the ground. She would let the others look and see and play, turning her head to Veyra,

"They're growing up so quickly. Soon they'll be hunting with us and learning how to survive." Lucia was just an all around nice female, not really one to think ill of anyone.

Leela arrived as well and Fayne nodded to her before listening to Callum again. As he introduced the puppies, Fayne looked at each in turn, trying to memorize their names. Luckily they all looked quite different, so it was only a matter of continuing to match the correct name to the correct puppy. Hopefully, she would be able to spend more time with them as they grew older. She also didn’t miss the way Verya seemed to swell with pride, a feeling she also remembered. Seeing the puppies and the new parents almost made her want to have another litter.

She stilled at the thought; her mateship with Altair was still new; puppies and the future in general were things they still had not really discussed; they were mostly just living in the moment and enjoying their still relatively new mateship. However, maybe now with these four around it would come up.

Her train of thought was cut off as Veyra nudged Harlequin her way, and Fayne held her hands out to him, encouraging his wobbly steps with a smile.

“Oh,” she laughed lightly as he stumbled. “Come on Harlequin,” she said gently, wiggling her fingers at him to further encourage him.

At Veyra’s flash of teeth the little she wolf reevaluated her approach and copied her sister Lucia with a more submissive stance. She went as far as lowering her body close to the ground so that that she looked both less threatening and be more eye level with the boys. When her haunches finally fell to the ground her driftwood gizzled tail thudded against the ground as she watched the young ones move and tumbled about. As adorable as they were, Leela didn’t envy the New Dawn Princess and her former Casa Prince. After attempting to puppy sit the Alpha pair’s pups many months ago, she realized how much work they were and didn’t feel like she should voluntarily make herself responsible for such madness. Leela doubted the protective mother would have let her pup sit any way - though it would not be for a few more months until the Amarok daughter would understand Veyra completly.

As each boy was introduced the female mumbled a nickname under her breath to help her remember them. Arrow… Reese……Harla… and…Monkee…. Is what she deemed them in her mind, feeling giddy with herself at the nicknames she came up with. She watched one, Harla, make his way towards Fayne and couldn’t help but smile a wolfy grin. She briefly wondered how long it would be until her brute of a brother and former mentor would have little ones of their own. The thought of being an aunt was thrilling. Perhaps, Leela considered, she should spend more time around puppies so when the time came she could have enough practice to be the best aunt ever! Although Lucia would be tough competition, so the idea died just as quickly as it was inspired.
