I'm too Young for This

He couldn’t sleep. Most of his members had been dreaming away for hours now but the Sun King had been quietly tossing and turning. In his hips a persistent and annoying ache prevented him from feeling comfortable. It was rare that he felt the aching so deep in his bones, particularly in his hips. The Knight had noticed that with the weather changing and becoming colder he felt the strange aches and pains more often in the dark hours.

Jazper grunted in frustration as he bundled up the furs and shoved them under his lower back and rear in a feeble attempt to support the bones that chose to keep him awake. In his mind he still held a sense of denial. He was a Knight! He was the founder of Casa! There was no way Fenris would punish him by taking away his able body so early. Although Jazper was not young at the age nearly seven he was only middle aged.

He turned to his side yet again, shifting the furs around him as he tried to find a comfortable position but all he could feel when he closed his eyes was the throbbing. Frustration over came him and the Sole ungracefully forced his way out of the fur blankets and out of his bed. In a quiet storm he made his way down the stairs and to the Medico office, where he knew Morty would likely be. Stopping in front of the door he knocked loudly, “Morty!”

Morty is the all knowing medic

Morty had been up late into the night doing the things that she did best, organizing her herbs and devising ways to treat patients better. In her passions, she often lost track of time as she went from thing to thing. It also helped that it gave her an opportunity to make her rooms immaculate, putting down sheets of thick cloth and furs. She certainly never have a patient go without comfort even if the walls were starch white, even if it was peeling in a place or two. Peering out a window, she soon began to realize just how late it had become.

The duty of the sole medico never ceased though and there was a clear beckoning for her presence and wiry body rose from her stool and she stood with a yawn. The Sole of the pack she knew well enough, he was her leader and a mighty canine, but more than that she knew how his own bones pained him. The massive weight of his body was an undoubted strain and it was likely he had come seeking her to alleviate some of it. The knock came and with a swift motion, she opened the door to her massive charge.

"Welcome, Jazper," She greeted with a wide smile, "Do come in, but watch your head! I don't want to treat that as well." Knowing he would be in no mood to be trifled with she went straight to work, gathering herbs that she thought would help him along. Though, she needed more information to accurately rate his pain and if there were other methods she could be using to ease the degradation of the poor male's bones. "Describe the pain to me, dear," She began, softly enough but her voice became more husky. "Grinding or grating? A deep ache or a sharp, stabbing pain?" Morty glanced at him expectantly, hands full of plants.

It was unusual for the Sole to be in a bad mood, he was a true friendly giant after all. Once, perhaps, he had been stubborn and impatient to the core but as he had grown the Knight patriarch had also grown in heart and kindness. The pain in his bones made the middle aged wolf a grumpy man though, and poor Morty was the only one he could talk to about his growing frustration.

As per usual the healer opened the door with a smile and a welcome, but Jazper did not return the gesture. Heavy feet shuffled into the office that he was becoming more and more accented with to take his place in a chair. As she went to work he relaxed a little, pleased that he could count on her to treat him with the utmost care and confidentiality. “It’s a throbbing dull ache. It hurts to walk and it hurts to make a fist.” With gritted teeth he pulled his fingers on his right hand into a ball and released.

Why had Fenris disowned him in such a cruel manner? Had the Sole not always protected those in need? Had he not created a pack based around helping others? Fenris wanted all canines to follow in his pawprints and be just and honorable, so why was it that he was being punished?

Morty is the all knowing medic

She was used to the pain he suffered, though sometimes it was different than others. From the moment he knocked her door, she had quickly dashed some herbs into her kettle that was constantly warmed by the stove. She always liked to keep warm water available for those that came to her door for any kind of reason. Chamomile was often her favorite, but for Jazper she pulled out more intricate mixes to begin the soothing and relieve the edge of his pain while she prepared a more complicated combination of herbs to deal with the bone pain specifically.

As he described it, she poured tea into her largest clay cup that would still look comical in his hand. Taking the cup, strong and bitter, she placed it in his hands. "Drink what you can, this will take some of the edge off, I assure you." It wouldn't eliminate the pain though for he was just so large, he often required special dosing. Quietly, she ducked into her small compartment of her most powerful herbs. She rarely had to use them for other reasons and she would do anything for the Sole and found his pain a wearing thing for him to go through.

Morty took from her storage a large, dried bulb that she harvested from her personal garden of opium poppies. She supposed they had been popular garden plants at some time but she had quickly realized that she had something special when she administered it to someone for the first time. It would be the first time with Jazper though, and she imagined that he would be satisfied with the new potency. She ground at the seeds she procured, bundling them onto the interwoven leaves of a willow. The seeds contained many pain relieving properties, along with the the willow. It had taken her several minutes to prepare it but she finished, she tied it off into a small, poppy containing pouch.

"Take this and chew it well and hard and when it is but a paste you can swallow it," She advised, "I'm sure you'll be feeling the reaction quickly enough." She'd eaten the poppy before, perhaps too much for an initial test drive and she had enjoyed the pain killing ride as much as anyone may. Though, it was not a high like could be produced by more modern products.

It was odd to feel so useless in his own pack. As he sat waiting for Morty to work her magic and find him a mixture of herbs that would have an effect on his massive body and not kill him, he felt like a child again. It was so rare that Jazper was not in control of the situation. From a young age he had commanded the attention and respect of others through his size and dominant body language, and earned to love of his member through his soft heart and gentle disposition. Now all he could do was sit and watch the medic at work, hoping she could help him.

It didn’t take long for Morty to shove a cup of tea in his hands. “Ow. Hot.” He grumbled quietly as he blew on the water and crinkled his nose up in disgust at the awful smell being emitted from the concoction. Hesitantly he took a sip and resisted the urge to spit out the liquid, if it was going to help him feel better than he had suffered through worse.

When she returned with an odd looking pouch before he accepted it. He had learned a long time ago not to question what the medics gave you. Perhaps in a different life the medical profession would have interested Jazper more than the thrill of a fight. He had spent a large portion of his puphood following Naniko around the herbal gardens of Crimson Dreams but had never quite taken interest in what plant was what. Now it was far to late for the patriarch, who shoved the poppy pouch into his mouth and began to chew, awkwardly staring at Morty.

Morty simply quirked a grin and watched him for a moment, waiting for the signs of relaxation in his body. There was no doubt in her heart that it would work well on him. Many of the drugs she used she had tried on herself at one time or another and that particularly concoction had very nearly knocked her out. It hadn't tasted good, just like plants and bitterness, tastes that were not exactly welcome on her tongue. Jazper was a big boy though, he knew how to get down his medicine without a fit.

The Medic turned her eyes away with time, just allowing the medicine to take its effect. She began forming a few others doses that he could take later rather than crawl down to her office and request them. The work was familiar on the tip of her fingers and she found herself doing it without even thinking about it.

After a few minutes of folding leaves together, she looked back up at him, settling him with a fierce stare. "Feeling better, Jazper?" She asked, casually, "If it still feels like your bones are grinding together, I suppose we'll just have to make bread out of you." The medic scoffed to her herself but supposed the Sole was about to feel much better, any minute now.
