She resembled him, though her eyes were a pale yellow just as those of his first and only love. She was of his blood, and that was enough for him to snatch her up and take her along with him. He would mold her, and instill in her his beliefs. When he died his legacy would be in the bloodlines that he spread across the world. He was Hydra, and when one head was removed, others would spring up in its wake. He could not be destroyed, even if his flesh was destroyed and his bones turned into dust. There were countless creatures with crimson eyes and golden fur just as his own.

Eight summers had passed since his birth—since he'd come crawling from his mother's womb, first to breath life out of three—and he'd traveled from one edge of the planet to the next. Even so, he wasn't done yet. Cherith had spit in his face and he'd dragged her to the ground. He was careful not to leave a mark on her pretty little face. He left her behind where she was, knowing she wouldn't go far. There was a toxic, masochistic draw, and she was just like him in that aspect.

The afternoon was cool and overcast, with the looming threat of rain. Moisture seemed to hang heavy in the atmosphere. The streets were quiet as he roamed with the slinking, silent pace of a born predator.

Perhaps a new home had been established for her, but Belle would not allow herself to be contained there. The coyote girl had tasted freedom, had sampled the sweet spice of life in the unknown territories she had wandered and she yearned for more. The coyote clan’s lands were growing more familiar, and it was once again the freedom of the unfamiliar that drew here. Upon the back of the buckskin mare, Belle pressed far north, trailing the edge of the mountains and turning from them once the land spilled away in a renewed expanse. The girl was relatively bare, aside from the few clothes she donned along with the familiar, wicked rub of the leather belt encompassing one thigh. The concealed blades brought her comfort and teased her darkness, but for now they remained untouched. Belle wound her fingers in Viscera’s dark mane and edged the mare towards the crumbling streets of St. John.

The atmosphere was cool, and rubies flicked to the overcast sky as if to gauge when the rain would come. And come it surely would. Viscera was slowed to a trot as they skirted about foreign debris remnant of the time of the humans, and admired the reclamation done by nature itself. Sharp canine peeked from dark lips as Belle considered this – it reminded her of the task that was set before her and her fellow brethren: the reclamation of their species’ former glory.

As she turned her gaze forwards, gazing upon the various buildings they passed, a pulse of electricity ran the length of her spine. Although they progressed forwards, ears rose to analyze their surroundings. All of the sudden Belle sensed they were being followed. And yet, her ruby gaze deceived her.

The last horse that Samael had kept had died abruptly. They were only obtained when he needed one, and only held onto briefly. He had no plans on leaving the area any time soon, despite winter soon approaching. He could have, and maybe even should have, heading south to where it was warmer. Cherith had never seen a winter before, and would probably struggle to adapt. His bow and arrow would help when snow covered the ground, but she would have to learn as well. He wouldn't provide for a useless beast.

As silent as he was, with meticulous movements that masked his presence, hooves were unable to do the same. He heard the sound, and sensed the weight behind the animal. No attempt was made to hide himself. He stayed where he was, watching the rider, unmoving. He said nothing.

Rubies danced, searching for whomever elicited such a response in her frame. Viscera seemed to sense Belle’s own apprehension and offered a snort of discontent. It went unheeded for the moment, as the coyote girl worked to find the perpetrator. It wasn’t until the duo moved further down the street that her ruby gaze caught sight of the unfamiliar form, his scent having reached her and offering insight as to where he loomed.

The mare’s walk slowed and then altogether ceased. Belle felt relatively secure upon Viscera’s back, but she couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that had settled into her spine, despite having discovered the stranger. It was that strange grin of his that unsettled her, and Belle could hardly find words to offer him. Her gaze did not leave him, instead analyzing this creatures of the shadows and wondering how it was that he had ended up here.

And yet he was of coyote blood, that much was certain. He could not be denied. A small part of her was reminded of the coyote boy Ridge whom had introduced her to her ways, and yet there was a dark feeling blooming within her abdomen that this male held much more malevolence than did her first, unrequited love.

She said nothing. Her eyes never left him, meeting his own, and with that the edges of his teeth showed, smiling truly. It was a vicious expression, without warmth. She was on a horse, and he was not. He didn't like speaking to people on horses when he was not. There was no equal ground between them. This annoyed him.

Wildly, he desired nothing more than to knock the horse right from beneath her, spooking it into a bucking frenzy and throwing her to the ground. But he refrained from forward motion. Death from a misguided hoof did not suit the prince of hell. She was decently enough coyote, and that at least warranted some attention.

“Perhaps if you removed yourself from your animal we would be able to see eye to eye,” he finally said.

The words were icy in the autumn air between them, but Belle nodded all the same. There was a sense of unease in her, and yet a part of her was intrigued, and she could not deny herself. The coyote girl gave the mare a pat along her broad neck, before swinging one leg over her side and slipping off Viscera’s back. Her clawed feet landed delicately upon the crumbling concrete, and Belle gave a light pat to the horse to send it off. Viscera would not travel far, she knew, but the mare would at least be out of the way and perhaps this would please the other.

And what is it that you see? She wondered aloud, her ruby gaze ever curious as it studied that wicked smile of his. She was equal parts fascinated and repulsed, but her curiosity overruled her. What could she learn from this creature of the shadows? The darkness within her seemed to stir, awaken. Could he see it in her?

i'd listen to the words he'd say but in his voice i heard decay

The horse was sent away, as he'd preferred. She'd dismounted, and now stood before him, on the ground. Her eyes were red, though a different shade than his own. There was coyote in her veins, but there were other things as well. “A sinner,” he responded. Her blood was tainted. She was impure. Something of the slow, low tone he'd adopted in the south caught in his voice, snagging along his words, dragging them out.

His voice was serpentine, slithering, but his accent changed depending on circumstance. For over a year he'd spoken barely a word of English, and had exchanged it for another language entirely. The Deceiver resided within him as well—the liar, and the prophet of Fear. “I see a tainted, impure creature burdened with Sin. You were born into wickedness. The road to salvation is long and wrought with difficulty.” The viper writhed within.

She stood as a child, silent with fear and fascination. The first words to leave his inky lips were true, and Belle could only help but nod. She was a sinner. She knew that to be true, and there was no denying it. How did he know? Could he see it in her? Crimson eyes growing wider, she nodded along to his words. They were all true, she knew that. But how? How did he know? Belle took a step forwards, her natural grace only faltering slightly as she hesitated to take another step. But how? She questioned, the words falling softly from her own lips.

Belle wanted to follow the righteous path, and yet she had taken steps that had led her into sin. She knew her actions for what they were, and yet she returned to them again and again. Salvation was truly what she needed, but she didn’t know how to attain it. The de le Poer girl was without guidance now, and alone she could not find the road she needed most. How do I find salvation? Her gaze pleaded with him, wanting the answers she did not have.

i want to kill everybody in the world

“You must beg for forgiveness,” he said. “You must live your life in penance and pray that you can be saved from the wickedness imposed upon you.” It was a shame, for she suffered not from her own actions, but from the muddied blood that had created her. “The Angel forgives. The Angel loves. But the Angel demands blood as a price.” The blood was not her own. Wolfen blood must be shed, for they were a pestilence upon the world. He would guide her, as that was his purpose here. He was older now, and no longer the youthful beast with a quick temper. He would show her the way, and save her from herself.

Blood, the de le Poer echoed, the word soft and unsure on her lips at first. Although she hesitated for a moment, she nodded and repeated the word with more confidence this time. Blood. It was a price she could pay, a price she had paid before. Could he see that in her as well? But, she started, questioning herself and the path to Salvation. ...whose blood does the Angel seek? She could spill her own, but she would not take her life. Other lives were expendable, and yet suicide was despised. Belle deserved life, this she knew. Not all were so lucky.
