As you make your bed, so you will sleep on it

307 → Watchmen Co-rank? (Patrol and scout Inferni at night. Patrol the border and areas where canines live (e.g., D'Neville Mansion, Grimwell, Great Village) to make sure no trouble visits Inferni in the night.)

Cartier found himself unable to sleep and so he had headed out while night fell around him. In order to put his restlessness at bay he decided to go out on a patrol. He figured that if someone were likely to try for a surprise attack then it would take place at night. It certainly sounded like the best course of action for someone else to take. The clan could possibly be at rest, plus there was the cover of darkness that would hide them should they decide to attack. He didn't want to be caught unaware and so he had taken to walking the borders every few nights.

The young male had started by checking around the caverns, as that was where he lived, and then had moved on to check out the mansion. So far everything had seemed safe on the home front. So with those places checked out and having passed inspection he headed on out to the borders in order to walk them. He decided to to take the long way around the borders so that he could end up at the Great Village last.

He ended up yawning and having to shake himself out as he tried to stay alert. Every so often he stopped and stared out into the darkness. He took a few steps closer to the border and sniffed at the air. He could have sworn that he saw some sort of movement out in the darkness but he wasn't smelling anything. It bothered him that it seemed his eyes were playing tricks on him. He sighed and turned away and started to move on but once again he thought he saw movement from her peripheral. Again it had him frowning and staring out past the borders. "Who is out there?" He ended up calling out finally.

She couldn't sleep, either -- bothered by an old nightmare, she'd woken and found herself jittery, childishly upset. It had been a long time since she'd dreamed of the ember-eyed monster and her too-small, too-frail body, but the emotions that surfaced did not seem to belong to her. She wasn't a puppy anymore; she'd suffered worse and worse loses since then. Frustration fueled her upset and, at last, she'd disentangled herself from Myrika with murmured apologies and slipped out of the schoolhouse -- pausing a moment by Sparrow's room but deciding against bothering her. Delilah needed the rest worse, and the dream-monster would evoke far worse memories for Sparrow than it did Vesper.

The scarred coywolf loped from the old building among the others, pausing to track a mouse with pricked ears before finally chasing after the thing. She darted quietly in the cold grass by the brick ruins and, at the end, pounced. The squeak of distress was muffled by her paws, and a quick bite dispatched the creature. She picked it up in her mouth but froze when she heard another in the darkness. Stiff of hackle and leg, she stalked around the building closer to the borders, sniffing cautiously.

She recognized Cartier before he recognized her, as he called out. She approached with confidence that would mark her as a clan member, waving her tail in greeting. When she reached his side, she paused to drop the mouse. Everything okay? she asked, and dipped her head to take a bite, her large ear still swiveling to catch the sounds of the night around them.

The sounds of footsteps behind him didn't bother him. He knew that only clan members would approach him from behind. It could only be a clan member this far into the lands. So it wasn't that which had him shook up was what he couldn't hear but thought that he could see. It bothered him that he wasn't able to fully focus on whatever it was that he assumed was out there. It bothered him that there was a possible threat just lurking around out there and waiting to strike yet he couldn't pinpoint just where it was.

The male glanced back over his shoulder at the sound of the voice. "Everything is fine, just fine." His voice lacked any amount of confidence to it and betrayed his concern. His attention was once more pulled out towards the borders and beyond them. He still had this nagging feeling that something was there. The young male didn't want to voice it though. Since he couldn't prove anything he fretted that it would just come off as a child's worry.

"What are you doing out?" Even though the question was directed at Vesper Cartier was still staring out past the borders. "I thought that everyone would be in bed." Which meant he couldn't mistake any sounds or signs of movement as he would be the only clan member up and out. But perhaps that was all it really was, someone else up and wandering about. Clan member did come and go after all. It could have been someone that had gone out previously and was just now returning. It wasn't like he had taken a head count before he had set out on his patrols. Still that didn't make him relax any at all. He couldn't prove it was a clan member but then again he couldn't prove that it wasn't.

have a short post

She did not miss the edge of unease in his tone, and plucked the mouse up out of the snow again to come closer to him, blue eyes surveying the darkness around them. She inhaled deeply, but she barely smelled anything but the musk of coyote and the mouse blood: familiar scents, safe scents. All was quiet and seemed fine, but she did not relax her guard even as she leaned briefly against the male in greeting.

Couldn't sleep, she replied honestly, but didn't divulge details. The dark tip of her tail flicked behind her, and she looked out at the borders as she asked: What is it?

Cartier lowered his head in order to press it briefly against Vesper's side in a return of the greeting and affection that he was shown. There was still a tenseness and unease contained within his body and he hadn't that he couldn't explain it. And it turned out that he wasn't being as subtle about his emotions as he thought he had been. The young male released a long and drawn out breath. He was using the time to took to expel then refill his lungs in order to come up with a proper response.

He couldn't lie to Vesper but it wasn't like the truth sounded all that well. "I'm not sure. I thought I saw something but I don't know. I don't smell anything and it was only a glimpse." He hated how silly he sounded. "I just can't help feeling that there is something there that I am missing." Once again he was blowing out his breath as he shook his head. He was just coming off sounding like a little kid afraid of the dark but that wasn't it at all. There was just this unexplained unease that he felt about the entire situation.

There was a flicker of movement once again, a shift of darkness within darkness. "There it is again. Did you see that?" Or was he just going out of his mind? Perhaps he really was just seeing things and simply making himself paranoid. Still the young male took steps closer to the border. He slipped between the stakes to stand, half in and half out of Inferni. His eyes strained to see out among the darkness. He was looking for that vague outline of shape that he had briefly caught and tried to pick up on just where it was once again.

His breath was drawn in once more though this time it was held as if that would make it easier for him to see and to figure out the source of movement. A shift of a slight breeze brought to him a scent that he had otherwise missed as the wind hadn't been in his favor. "Vesper..." He spoke tensely as the scent was recognized. He didn't know who it was but he knew exactly what it was. There was another wolf hanging around Inferni and it set his every nerve ending on edge.

There had been no immediate attack so perhaps it was only a spy. Still, it wasn't like a spy was ideal either. Cartier frowned and continued to shift his weight from one paw to the next. He was uncertain on just what to do. He was torn between doing whatever it took to defend Inferni and still finding himself unable to draw first blood. It wasn't like the figure was right upon their borders but the dark wolf was still way too close for comfort. Cartier was glad that Vesper was with him so that he didn't have to make such a hard decision. It was left up to the leader to decide what to do and Cartier would simply follow her command.

366 I don't know how much more you need, if you do need anymore. But we can end it here or soon with the assumption that they did what Vesper suggested. Up to you! Archive at will or poke me if you need me to reply again, or if you have an idea to continue it for fun.

Cartier admitted that he'd seen something, huffing out a breath, but Vesper's brows were drawn and her expression worried. She trusted his judgment; he'd saved her life once before, after all. His eyes darted to the darkness of the borders again and she followed his gaze, her own body tensing. I think, she said, squinting and sniffing at the air. The wind wasn't right for the scent, but there was some semblance of movement beyond the borders. It wasn't until the breeze shifted that the reek of wolf was confirmed.

He warned her with her name, but she only brushed alongside him as they made their way along the stakes. Cartier hesitated, perhaps deferring to her authority, and so she shook out her coat and lifted her tail as she trotted toward the wolf, a creature with shadowy fur. Its eyes were bright, though, and reflected starlight as its gaze darted nervously to her.

Close, Vesper could see that the wolf was a yearling—if even that. Perhaps he was no more than nine or ten months old. These are Inferni's borders, she growled, raising her head and tugging her lips to show her teeth. You're a little close. You should leave.

The wolf pressed his ears down and tucked his tail, hesitating a few heartbeats. Sorry, he said, but his voice was odd. He nevertheless adjusted his posture to show submission and, with a glance to the skulls, retreated a few steps. Sorry, going, he promised, and with a gait limping from nervousness skittered away from her and toward the long grass again. It did not take long for him to disappear from sight, but as he went, Vesper turned back around to her Bellum.

Come with me, she murmured. We need to make sure he's truly left—but we should track him seperately in case it's an ambush, and try not to spook him. I don't think he means us harm, but a scared canine can be dangerous, too.

With that, the pale coyote whirled round and trotted into the fields, pausing with her head raised and ears pricked before loping after the wolf.
