Cleaning up the Gardens

POSTED: Mon Mar 16, 2015 1:39 pm

The rain had stopped almost a week ago now but the aftermath still remained, a reminder of what had happened. The Great Hall still stunk of livestock bodily functions, despite having been cleaned up and the floor scrubbed multiple times already, causing the front door to the courthouse to be permanently propped open. As Luca walked towards the door a light gust of wind brushed under his fox fur lined cloak and much to his pleasure that gust was warm.

As a Corpo it was now not only his duty to help with the clean up but to organize it as well. Fortunately Casa was rich with members right now and many hands made light work. As he stood on the front steps of the courthouse Luca’s golden eyes took in the beautiful sight of Cavaliers working together – cleaning debris from the muddy grass, and washing the horses and livestock out in the sun. But the front of the Fort was the easy portion – most of the wreckage was located in the gardens.

One foot in front of the other the Corpo made his way around the building, his cream colored paws instantly turning brown in the still very wet ground. With a sigh he pouted in frustration at the sight of the gardens. The winter had left it brown, with the exception of a few evergreens, but the flooding had torn up most of plants, exposing roots. Most of the gardens would have to be removed to make room for the new. Raising his muzzle in the air he called for a few hands to help.

River had never been so happy to be out in the fresh air and sunshine as she was now; if it was up to her she might never go back into the Courthouse. Even now, days after it had been emptied, it still stunk of sheep and horses. River's poor nose must not have been the only one in protest; the entire pack was eager to leave the building behind each morning, trading it for the trashed yard of the fort. The Lotto stood on the muddy grass, surveying the wreckage and trying to decide where she could be of use. She had little experience with the livestock, and wasn't grown enough to move the wreckage and debris on her own. As such, Luca's call gave her a much needed direction, and she scampered off around the Courthouse.

Turning the final corner around the building was a shock. The gardens had been completely destroyed by the flood water. The stream had flooded early on, and the extra water hadn't been kind to the poor plants. Roots stuck up everywhere, and the nice pathways through the garden were completely indistinguishable from the mess of the beds. The coywolf picked her way towards her mentor, trying to avoid the worst of the mud and mostly failing. Reaching his equally muddy side, she yipped out a bright "Mornin' Luca!" before adding a determined "I'm here to work. A river helped make this mess, so a River can help clean it up." The young coywolf tried and failed to keep a straight face at this last line; she had been waiting all week for a chance to use it. Giving in to the smile, she grinned back up to the Corpo "Where can I start?"

Estella answered the call when she heard it, though it took some effort to hide the frown that tried to come upon her face when her pristine, white toes squished in the mud.

She had been in Casa for only a day—their King, the Sole, had allowed her into their borders after she approached the borders inquiring if they needed any assistance with the recent floods. The Court had received minimal damage overall, though her mind wandered to things like Maciel's home, now gone, and the morning she found Pascal screaming. Food in the King's Cellar was lost, buildings were destroyed, but nothing major.

And no lives were lost, thank goodness. The Butler girl began to wonder about the other packs and how they fared. It was a good opportunity—or maybe an excuse on her part—to venture from the Court to visit the other packs to dip her toes into what diplomacy would be like. She did not imagine that it would mean cleaning up another pack's territory, but it was in the name of goodwill and she would not slander the Court's image by denying whatever help she could provide to their allies.

But mud. Estella could live without dirty, filthy mud.

The call was made from behind their courthouse, and what she knew was once their gardens looked like a storm of puppies had came in and uprooted everything in pure jest. A man and a girl was waiting, and she caught the tail end of the girl's conversation to see that it was the man who made the call and seemed to be moderating things. "I am here to help as well, monsieur," she greeted with a polite smile and gave the girl one as well. Estella felt a bit like a fish out of water being the only Courtier in the pack's territory, but she was adjusting to her settings—the Knights were a friendly bunch, after all.

The ship had survived the storm in relatively good condition after Sylvie's escape from it thanks to Lorenzo. She was glad now, though, to be living on it again as opposed to in the fort. The Great Hall smelled terrible and while she did not mind taking care of one horse, dealing with the smell of so many was not something she was particularly interested in. It was terrible, really.

Although caring for large groups of animals was perhaps not her preferred activity, Sylvie was willing to do other things to help clean up. This included getting muddy, and she was perfectly okay with that. When she heard Luca's call, she turned to head to where he was and arrived in time to hear either a visitor or new member say 'monsieur'. Sylvie brightened at hearing someone speak French, but now was not the time. Instead, she lowered her gaze in deference to Luca, who was higher-ranked than her, and then eyed the damage to the garden.

"Looks like we've got our hands full here," she said to those who had gathered so far. Sylvie did not know too much about growing plants like this, although she did know the uses for some of them. She wasn't sure if the fact that the storm had come through before a lot of things was good or just not bad. They hadn't done any planting yet, but what if the soil was somehow ruined?

"What should we do first?" Sylvie asked Luca. Before, he was the student and she was the teacher, but this was a place where she was mostly lost. Perhaps he would be able to give her more direction.

Such a mess was left from the destruction of the flood. Mud replaced nearly every bit of dirt so it squelched between her toes wherever she went. While she didn't mind the darker brown smudges on her feet, it was the wetness of it that bothered her. Damon however loved it. The black pup thoroughly enjoyed it when she allowed him to play in the mud. Today she'd risen at the crack of dawn with the help of her new charge. Damon loved to run, so she obliged him with a few races to and from various locations inside the Fort.

Once she heard the howl however the cream furred wolfess herded Damon to the butcher's shop. Jonas had been there the last time she'd visited but this time she was greeted with Isaac. The laid back wolfdog welcomed her with a wagged tail. "I am to babysit again then?" he asked good naturedly. Her maw opened to apologize but he waves it away with a twinkle in his eyes. "Don't worry about it darlin', I like watching the trickster. Get into all sorts of trouble, don't we mate?" the ease that he switched from what sounded like a southern drawl to something else that her ear couldn't name made her smile. Damon's tail pumped back and forth behind him eagerly and he barely paid attention when she reminded him to behave for the butcher.

So she left Damon there and made her way to the source of the howl. Upon her arrival there were already some others, just in time to hear what the female ex-pirate had said. River, Luca, and another woman that smelled of another pack were also present. Veri hadn't made herself acquainted with the scent of the other packs. Perhaps she should change that. Her tail wagged in greeting to each one before her mixed blue eyes swept across the damage that had been dealt to the gardens. To her this area was more precious than it might be to the others, as she tended to it beside Morty and Kira to keep their stores full. To see it like this made her heart ache a little that so much work to keep the few buds alive through the winter had been for naught.

Her gaze went to Luca, as he had been the one to call. That he was a Corpo now, his call for assistance did not surprise her. She smiled at him and placed her hands on her hips as she surveyed the area quickly again. "Got some work cut out for us then. At least it's a place I really like to be in. Most of the damaged buds and such will probably need to be removed." the last bit was half in answer to Sylvie and half suggestion to Luca. He was her superior so his word ruled here, she showed this by her relaxed ears and her gaze that met his only briefly before they moved on, however she couldn't remember if Luca had experience in gardening or not. She left the ultimate decision to him, of course.

Much to Luca’s pleasure his young apprentice arrived on site within a few moments, a bounce in her step. In some way River’s continued spunk reminded the golden Corpo of his sisters. They always seemed to be ready to take on the world at a moments notice. The Mentor had no doubt that with a little practice River would make a great Cavalier. It was difficult not to roll his eyes at the little joke she made. Just as he was about to open his muzzle to speak another arrived. Maybe he should wait a bit and see how many showed before they began.

He hadn’t understood the odd word at the end of her sentence, but he nodded and smiled regardless. “It’s nice to see one of our Allies come to help out. You’re help is appreciated.” Again another arrived, Sylvie. Quickly he dipped his own head, perhaps a little lower than was customary for a Corpo to a Bracciante but the ex-pirate was still Luca’s teacher. The last to arrive was Veri – a long time member that Luca remembered being around the pack lands a lot but did not know much about. The fact that she was still a Prova did not impress the Knight that had pulled his boots up and worked hard to get to his current rank, but the fact that she was here was a start.

Golden eyes watched Veri as she talked about the plants. It was true that Luca did not know much about Gardening but he dared not say that openly. “Okay.” He began with a neutral face. “Veri. Why don’t you and Sylvie try to salvage as many plants as you can, if you can re-plant anything do so.” Turning to the lady from the court and his apprentice he added, “The three of us will start on the trees. We can remove any branches or larger trees that have fallen and re-plant any smaller trees with roots still intact. Anything too large we’ll leave and I’ll get some of the guys to move them later on.”

Not wanting to waste time he began to move into the garden, quickly locating a fallen young tree, roots partially exposed. “Why don’t I hold this sucker up and you to try and replant the roots.” He wasn’t sure how well it would work but it was worth trying why the earth was still dense with water to weigh down the tree’s life lines.

Veri's ears pricked forward once Luca's instructions came, a slight smile upon her muzzle as she dipped her head a bit to him in acknowledgement. Mixed blue eyes moved on from the Corpo to Sylvie, the ex-pirate. The cream furred wolfess hadn't interacted with the Bracciante much, regrettably. There was no reason to it, as she didn't blame the other canine for the earlier problems involving the pirates. Sylvie, along with Julien, had done their best to help Lola and Morty. And Sylvie was of a nice sort anyway. Veri thought it would be a good thing to make more time with the older woman at a later date.

A wagged tail greeted the other wolfess as the cream furred canine approached her. "Well, let's get at this mess then, shall we?" mixed blue eyes turned from Sylvie to locate one of the worse spots, and there she headed, just a few paces to the right of the other woman. Veri bent to the ground and felt the earth there. Much too damp for these plants here. With gentle fingers and claws she dug down into the loosened and slightly muddy dirt until she could feel the roots, and at that time she tugged gently to free the plant from it's soggy confines.

Upon the question Sylvie had asked earlier about the plants, Veri thought it might be safe to assume the ex-pirate had little experience in the ways of gardening. A smile was given to Sylvie as she placed the extracted plant aside as ruined. "Essentially you can just point your hands down, align with the plane, and come down to a point in the dirt until you feel the root or your fingers touch, and then lift it free. If it's salvageable for replanting...mmm..Maybe once we have a section cleared then those that can be saved can be placed back into their beds." she hoped her tone was gentle enough to not seem bossy, especially to one above her in rank. Something she'd picked up from Morty in her early days of training was her obsession with the garden and that it be taken care of properly.
