Thread prompt #3: Do a sweep of the borders!

276 For one please <3 Thyri is in Lupus form.

Huff. Huff. Huff. Aside from the consistent music of songbirds and the occasional swish of low-hanging leaves sweeping against fur, the panting of her own breathing was the only other sound filling her large ears. This was good. The birds were not disturbed and the only smells on the air were those she was pleasantly familiar with: wolf and pine and sea. Thyri grinned, broad and proud, as she left her tracks behind her with confidence.

It might have been foolish to go out on her own. After all, she'd only just begun to expand her personal space earlier in the month. But she felt like she had so much time and experience to make up for, having spent far too long wallowing in worry and uncertainty and, quite frankly, fear. That was what it had boiled down to: fear. But Thyri hated being afraid. She was stronger than that, stronger than him. Now. Now she was, anyway, and she could defend herself far better than before. She would not be afraid any more.

Padding on silent paws up to the edge of the territory, Thyri slowed to a stop and stared out into the neighboring woods: free land. Large pale ears pressed forward on her head, searching for any unusual sounds but finding only peace. She sucked in a generous gulp of air, satisfying her oxygen-deprived lungs as her chest expanded. Expelling the air with a loud snort, the young Hollr twisted her body towards a young sapling and squatted, replenished the pack's scent markers with a brief spurt of urine. Let him think twice before messing with us again, she thought with a smirk.

OOC: Hi! Have an Aspen? :D She's in Lupus with a bag. It's got a cross-body strap and is kind of tight on her, so it sits against one of her sides.

IC:
Being out of the pack lands was a bit nerve-wracking for Aspen, especially when she went alone. She also did not like bothering others for help when they had things to do, especially when she was simply going to the Outpost and back. She just wanted to go trade for some cooking supplies, specifically another pan and a pair of what she thought were called tongs. She was tired of flipping over the meat she was cooking and burning herself. The tongs she traded for were made from metal, but were tied at one end over a stick, which would let her squeeze them enough to flip over the meat. Aspen did not find a pan she liked, so she came back with only the tongs in her bag, along with the leftover arrow heads that she had planned to trade.

As she neared the border, she caught the scent of Thyri, which did not seem too old, and decided she could go say hello and see how she was doing. It would give her some time to settle down from her trip before possibly seeing one of her own daughters. They worried, and Aspen disliked that. She took a second to decide which way Thyri was going on the trail and then let out a yip to find her before heading off. Soon enough, she spotted Thyri up ahead.

"H-hi, Thyri," Aspen called. It took effort for her to make her voice loud since she generally did not do that. "How are you doing?" She asked when she caught up a little more.

247 Yay! Aspen!! <333 Thank you for joining c:

A yip, slipping easily along the same air that hung heavy with smells of pack and land, caught Thyri’s attention with a start. She halted in her easy lope, toes splayed to slow her impetus, and twisted her body back towards the source of the sound. But for the anticipatory tremors in her taut muscles, she had become a momentary statue in her need to process the sound. After just a moment, her own voice echoed Aspen’s and she stood waiting for the elder Vináttan with her tail wagging jovially behind her.

Despite her dominant posture, the young Dawnbringer lowered her ears to Aspen’s approach and loosened her stiff stance to trot cheerfully towards her. I’m good, she replied, respectfully stretching out her tongue to lap at the Starfa Ríkr’s chin. Look Aspen, I’m helping to mark the borders. Could you tell? Thyri smiled, standing proudly in front of the grey woman. She smelled of exertion and foreign things and maybe a touch of worry. It caught the youth’s attention and her jade eyes fell for the first time on the bag around her body. Did you go somewhere?

For Thyri, the world outside of Vinátta was mystery and exploration. And danger, though she was finding that adventure could not be had without some semblance of peril. Now that she was older and knew how better to defend herself, the blonde Dawnbringer felt she could handle whatever came at her next. Will you take me next time?

Having others submit to her was not something Aspen was used to. Despite her higher rank, she generally did not display dominance in any way, even through disagreeing with someone when she knew they were wrong. It was difficult for her, having grown up at the bottom of the ranks, and then alone. Truthfully the only time it came with any sort of ease was when she was giving directions to her daughters. Perhaps it was because she they had once been smaller than her, or maybe it was because she was their mother.

"A very important task," Aspen replied sincerely with a nod. It was not a task she could generally bring herself to do. She disliked leaving the safety of home in general, and the borders hardly seemed like a safe place to be alone. She was aware that Shore patrolled sometimes as well, which also made her nervous.

"Oh um yes, I went to the Outpost," Aspen replied. If she was leaving the packlands, it was generally to go there, not that she went around telling everyone where she was going. Her daughters always knew, and she often let Drin know too. That way of something happened, they would know to look for her.

"Sure, you can come too," Aspen agreed. She figured she should probably make the offer to her daughters as well. Shore, she knew, would likely get jealous otherwise. She took a couple of steps forward along the border, figuring that she could accompany Thyri for a bit instead of interrupting her. "Would you want to trade for anything specific?" Being prepared would be good, she thought, and they could also make sure Thyri would have enough goods to trade for what she wanted.

283 Thyri you dork

See galleries for credit.

The Outpost. She said it as though the place was mystical, somewhere foreign and exciting. But to Thyri, who was just an young adolescent by society's standards, the trading post truly was something of a mystery. What strange Luperci would she meet there? Would there be exotic animals and food and smells? What kinds of unusual things did people trade? To a youth who had never ventured far from her birthplace, she could only imagine the sights and sounds and smells she'd find in a place like that.

Thyri was proud of Aspen's sincere response and wagged her thick tail cheerfully when it appeared the older Vináttan intended to join her a little ways on her patrol. She padded a little ways, tongue rolling out of her mouth as she smiled back at the slight female. You mean that? Yes! She replied, bouncing playfully around Aspen out of excitement. As much as she despised others acknowledging the girl's youth, she was still very much a puppy.

Screwing up her face with though, the Dawnbringer considered what she'd want to gain from a trip to the Outpost. Clothing, she said at last, thinking about her mother's pretty dresses. She wasn't sure she wanted a dress, but she liked the wavy flow of skirts. Oh, and maybe some useful new plants for the garden. Thyri had started learning more about botany from Finch and was taking a surprising interest in it. What kinds of things do you think I'd need to trade for those? As much as she wanted to go to the Outpost soon, she didn't have much in the way of materials to trade. She'd need to be prepared before she set out.

Thyri's burst of puppy energy startled Aspen but she quickly calmed and her tail wagged and she smiled in response instead. "Yes, um, of course," she replied. Ode had always been a calm puppy, and while Shore did things like that in the past, somehow Aspen was not as surprised by her.

"Hm, well um, I have some arrows and dried fish you could use to trade. Otherwise your mom might be able to provide something for you, too." Aspen suggested while continuing to walk along the border. Her gaze flicked outside their territory every so often, watching for any signs of danger. What Thyri needed to bring really depended on what she wanted to trade for and who she was getting it from. Some of the traders had specific things that they wanted, but there was always the chance that there would be a traveling trader who would want something completely different.

"But um, furs would probably get you some clothes, or if you've found any jewelry, maybe?" Aspen was not all that versed in trading. So far, she had traded mostly for animals and cooking supplies. She did not generally wear clothes, and the most experience she had with plants was weeding the garden and using dried herbs for cooking. Aspen wished she had known Thyri wanted to trade for clothes when the canines from Midnight Shores had visited since she heard one of them had a lot of clothes and things like that for trade.

The elder Vináttan's surprise at the girl's puppy antics was completely lost on Thyri, who was still reeling with the exciting idea of embarking on an adventure to the Outpost. She'd already decided that, being an Araedi-in-training, she would take it upon herself to be extra diligent and mindful of everything around them - something she understood to be an important aspect of her future tier. Protect, defend, and escort. She beamed decisively at Aspen, these thoughts ringing clear in her young mind.

Hm, she murmured thoughtfully, the skin above her eyes furrowing deeply. Would Shiloh really provide items for her to trade? Or would she make Thyri earn those things herself? The Dawnbringer screwed up her mouth crookedly as she considered what her mother was most likely to say. She was getting older now; did she really want that kind of help from an adult? Thanks Aspen, but I'm gonna do get what I need all by myself, she decided with a wide smile of resolve.

She liked Aspen's idea of furs and wagged her tail furiously to reflect her appreciation for the idea. Yeah, furs! I'm getting real good at hunting rabbits, Aspen. And I can skin them now, too. I bet I could trade some of those! After the minor fiasco with the deer she and Shore had hunted, Thyri had made it a point to learn how to properly skin and dress the prey she caught.

The girl parted her maw to say more but a sound caught her ears and a thrill ran down her spine. She froze. Aspendidyouhearthat? she huffed quickly, the rushed question running together into a single monstrous word. Stiff and angular, Thyri craned her neck around in the direction the two women had come, pale eyes flicking about for signs of danger. Something was rooting about near the base of a tree, partially hidden by foliage. It was dark and fairly large, but didn't seem to be any immediate threat. Oh! she gasped, inching back uncertainly. The rodent's characteristic quills came into view and as it caught wind of the Luperci, it paused and tensed. Aspen? Can we walk away from this one or do we gotta fight it?

"I bet you would be able to," Aspen agreed about the furs. She traded them sometimes too, although the furs did not always come out the best for her. It was not too uncommon for hers to end up having holes in them, which made them less valuable. Those she would use as a bed, or added it to the piles of furs her daughters slept on. She had better luck trading arrows or even dried fish as long as Major, Sarge, and Thof had not decided to snack on those.

Aspen looked over when Thyri didn't say anything else and she heard the sound as well. Her ears went flat and she followed Thyri's gaze, nervously looking for whatever was behind them. Was it following them? Were they in danger? Aspen was not much of a fighter, but she could probably give Thyri enough time to escape. Finally, the source of the sound came into view and Aspen lifted her head. Her legs shook a little in relief that it was not a predator that was larger than them or another canine.

"It's... It's a porcupine," Aspen said, voice light and shaky. Someone told her when she was a puppy that they could shoot their quills, but her mother had disagreed. Aspen was fairly certain that the other pup had just been trying to scare her. Most of them liked to do that.

"Um, well, they can be dangerous um, if they charge you but," she licked her lips in nervousness while carefully watching the porcupine. "But I think we can just walk away." Most likely, if they tried to fight it, they would need to have quills removed or it would just climb a tree and be out of their reach anyway. "If um, it was in the barn, I would say chase it out." It might try eating the food that was meant for the livestock, but the barn was several miles away, and Aspen saw no reason to go after it here.

Blonde fur spiked and bristled, making the young Lupus look thick with anxiety and uncertainty. As she waited for Aspen to respond, Thyri tentatively wrinkled her nose and allowed her ivory fangs to glint dangerously in the sunlight. She considered how she could hurt the thing while avoiding injury to herself but it didn't seem possible. With the exception of its face and feet and maybe its underbelly, the animal was completely covered in spines that looked painfully sharp and formidable. For its part, the porcupine remained perfectly tense and stationary, its small nostrils flared and its large dark eyes wide. Thyri snorted and the creature started but did not run away.

Flicking an ear at Aspen's response, the young Dawnbringer allowed her hackles to lower slightly and loosened the wrinkles on her nose. "That's a porcupine? she asked, frowning at the strange creature. She could remember hearing the word once or twice before but had never seen one before. She tilted her head slightly and started towards it curiously until the stable manager spoke again. Thyri twisted her head around to peer at the older women then lowered her rump down into sit, huffing a frustrated sigh. She definitely didn't want that thing to charge her but it felt cowardly to walk away too, even if she wasn't particularly keen on getting involved with a creature made of sharp spines.

"But what if someone else runs into it?" she asked, conflicted. Thyri rose to all four paws again and released a soft whine, her thick tail hanging limply at her hocks. The porcupine shuffled towards the nearest tree but paused again when it heard the youth's whine, prepared to slap its quills into its adversary. The youth glanced at Aspen again with a confused frown. "I'm gonna chase it away," she said decisively, releasing a sharp bark as she bounded towards the large rodent.

Luckily for the girl, the sudden sound of her voice jarred the creature out of its state of fear and sent it scurrying up the tree. From its base, Thyri looked up the tree and into the porcupine's glare before giving it a satisfied snort and trotting proudly back to Aspen, her wail waving happily behind her. "Okay, it's safe now, right Aspen?" she asked, looking for praise. "Nothing better dare mess with us, huh?"

Since porcupines were generally prey animals, Aspen was not too worried about what might happen of someone else came across it. She was fairly certain that it would simply run away unless they did something to provoke it... like charge at it. Aspen's eyes widened.

"Wai-" but it was too late, and Thyri was already charging the porcupine. Aspen could only imagine the trouble she was going to be in now for letting Shiloh's daughter get herself stuck with a bunch of porcupine quills. She closed her eyes waiting for the inevitable pained sounds that Thyri would make when it hit her on the nose.

It never happened and Aspen opened her eyes again and lifted her head in confusion. She followed Thyri's gaze up into the tree where the porcupine had taken refuge and let out a quiet sigh of relief. Her ears remained back as Thyri trotted back over to her, looking proud of herself in Aspen's opinion.

"Yes it is," Aspen agreed, more to get Thyri to stop trying to mess with the porcupine than anything. After all, she figured it would probably just climb back down and carry on with whatever it was doing when they spotted it. She chose not to mention that, though and nodded again.

"Yup, we better keep moving, though," Aspen replied. She took a step forward and waited for Thyri to follow. The Starfa Rikr wanted to get away from the prickly rodent before Thyri got any other ideas.
