327 → Out of Character text

War was on the horizon and Cartier knew that what he set out to do would just end up exacerbating it. The coyote couldn't help it though. The male had simply caused one issue after another. This final one was simply the last straw for Cartier. He wasn't the sort to go out and look for a fight but he was doing so this time around. The blonde wolf had hurt his almost sister and he just couldn't let that go. Vici had never done anything in her life to ever deserve to be hurt. He could let slide attacks against himself but not those against his family.

"We can't just let him get away with this." Cartier spoke to the raven that flew above and before him. He didn't know if Stark could really hear him or not but Cartier felt a bit of the tenseness that had him so wound up ebb away. He was convinced that he was doing the right thing. How could defending the honor of Vicira not be a right thing? Even though he thought himself to be doing the proper thing he hadn't been able to bring himself to bring himself to tell Vesper about where he was headed. Instead he had just mumbled out something about going out for a lesson with Stark.

He had no idea if the bird had felt as put out as he did about the whole affair but Stark has agreed to join him. The raven was teaching him to be able to talk to the other ravens, and with war looming Cartier was also learning the art of spying. Granted Cartier wasn't doing the spying himself but he was being taught how the birds did it and how to translate information gathered by the avian creatures. So while he hadn't told Vesper the entire truth he hadn't lied either. Stark was teaching him while out and looking for the blonde beast.

He knew it was only a matter of time before the coyotes came.

Skoll wanted to bring the fight to their borders, to pick them off before they could hurt another Courtier, but this was his Kingdom. He knew the sprawling forests, the fields, the seaside. Any dirty scavenger who would cross over into their land would meet their end; he would see to it. The Seneschal would die protecting his people.

He ran along the borders on all fours, lungs swelling in his deep chest and heart keeping a rhythm for his feet. At familiar landmarks he stopped to sniff into the neutral territories, pausing with ears pricked to listen to the sounds of the forests, and left pungent scent markers: healthy, dominant, aggressive. One would have to be scent-blind to miss them even from half a mile away, and braindead to challenge them.

He slowed to a ground-eating trot after a while, conserving energy before he would run again. There was a lot of territory to cover, but still several hours of sunlight. The wolfdog paused again, panting softly then curling his tongue in his mouth as he sniffed. Something was off, and he crept into the vegetation, moving quietly as he could.

A caw rang out through the trees. Skoll stole up on the caller -- a big shaggy raven perched on a tree stump and letting the cry ring out again.

Green eyes widened then narrowed. The corpse-eater was one of the coyotes'. They're spying on us, he thought, and growled.

The black bird twitched his head and unfurled his wings, flapping away from him in panic.

Skoll leaped.

He caught the raven in his mouth and shook it.

300 → Nuuu! Stark!

Cartier listened for Stark's calls. He still wasn't used to what they all meant just yet but he was learning. There were a few that he recognized and it was those that he was listening for. It was those calls that would tell him when their target had been found. Cartier felt guilty for even considering trespassing which is why he was hoping for Stark to draw out the wolf. Cartier kept his ears perked for the calls of the raven as he paced back and forth outside of the borders.

Every so often the coyote would pause to glance towards the borders in hopes of seeing a flash of black feathers. The longer it took for Stark to get back the more concerned that Cartier got. He had no one out here to turn to and so he wasn't certain what to do. Finally he heard a call from Stark but it wasn't the sort he wanted to hear.

The coyote forgot his anxieties and ended up forging on past the borders in search of Stark. Cartier growled when he spotted the bundle of feathers in the wolfdog's mouth. He didn't even think but leaped at the blonde male with his fangs bared. First this guy thought to hurt Vicira and now he was trying to eat Stark. It was just one thing after another. The wolfdog just seemed to want to destroy Inferni altogether. Or else he was just out to make Cartier miserable by trying to take away everything that he cared for.

Cartier snapped at the wolfdog. All he could think about was getting the other to release Stark. He didn't know how he would break the news about Stark to Vesper but the least he could do would be to return the body to her.

Fangs dug into the raven, which flailed helplessly in his mouth, emitting raspy panicked shrieks as he sought to kill it. He threw the shaggy, limp thing on the ground and snatched it in his teeth again, jaws crunching, and was so caught up in his snarling and anger that he didn't smell or hear the approach of the coyote until it barreled into him.

The raven tumbled from his jaws into the grass, and blood welled from the side of Skoll's neck where the coyote snapped. He recognized the male from the storm, briefly, but now he was just another enemy -- a trespassing Infernian. He jumped back and shook himself, squaring off against the scavenger and snarling.

You must have a death wish, Skoll rumbled, and rushed for him, aiming to bowl him over and get his teeth into one of his legs.

312 → Cartier is so lame

Cartier was surprised at himself and what it was that he had done. The taste of wolf blood filled and mouth and had him quickly spitting it out. A shudder convulsed through his body. The last time he had tasted that particular fragrance of blood on his tongue he had killed. The thought that he had possibly done so again had him feeling worked up. The Secui shifted male continued to drool and forced ribbons of blood tainted saliva from his mouth.

The coyote was too focused on trying to get the taste out of his mouth that he didn't notice the wolf hadn't gone down but that he was coming straight for him. Cartier yelped when he was bowled over and forced to the ground. A yowl of pain was emitted when teeth tore into the flesh of his leg. Cartier attempted to jerk away from the other, though only ended up furthering the injury to himself as Skoll had a hold on him and he was just dragging his leg against the other male's sharp teeth.

He had gone into this whole affair without any sort of plan in mind and now he was paying for it. He snapped at the other male's muzzle and sought to gain some sort of purchase there. His only thought, though it wasn't a truly coherent one, was to try to get the other to let him go. He had to check on Stark still and get the bird somewhere else, even if it was only a body that he would be bringing back with him. There was just no way that he could leave Stark behind, whether or not he was dead or alive. Vesper had trusted him to take care of Stark and he had failed her. The least he could do now was to make certain that the raven wasn't eaten.

Powerplayed, tell me if you want me to change. Feel free to pp Cartier throwing Skoll off and inflicting minor injuries on him, too! I'm thinking maybe Jehan/Clover can show up in this thread too just to give Cartier an opening so he can escape with Stark, and then we can do our other thread with them set after?

Spittle flew from the coyote's jaws as he yelped, tumbling into the long grass. Struggling against the force of Skoll's jaws, the Infernian jerked his leg and yowled, but Skoll kept his grip tight and tried to jerk the limb back. He didn't have any plan himself, only wanted to dole out pain -- these Infernians had hurt Aurelya, kidnapped Pascal, and now this mongrel and his bird were the unlucky faces of the enemy for Skoll to rip apart.

Fangs snapped at his muzzle, opening the leather of his nose with a well of blood, and Skoll released the other's leg only to throw his weight on top of the coyote. His jaws cracked harshly against the coyote's, and he placed a heavy paw on the other's neck, hoping to crane it back so he could sink his teeth into his throat.

322 → Sure, I don't mind this being a short thread since I suck so bad lately.

Cartier was panicking and he knew it. Vesper had taught him better than this but he seemed to have forgotten everything that he had ever learned. How was he ever meant to prove himself to be a true warrior if this was how he ended up reacting during a fight? It was probably a good thing that he had given up aspirations of ever being an actual warrior. Marlowe had that job and Cartier now felt that the trained male could keep it as he no longer wanted anything to do with that faction.

His plan, despite how lame of one it was, ended up working. His limb was released and Cartier was quick to jerk it back towards himself. A chunk of flesh and fur had been ripped from it but no permanent damage had been done. The coyote wouldn't have been able to say that if the wolfdog had managed to keep his hold for too much longer.

Of course the reprieve came at further cost as he felt the larger male's weight press down on him. Cartier forced himself to fight back another wave of panic as the golden male went for his throat. Cartier had to remind himself of Vesper's lessons and how fighting was a dirty business.

Cartier snapped at the other male again in order to keep Skoll distracted and away from his throat. His claws scrabbled at the earth and sought to only gain purchase enough for him to be able to kick dirt and dust up into the air in order to blind the Court member long enough for him to get himself up from the ground.

Cartier stood with his injured limb tucked close to his body but he didn't stay still for long. Instead he remembered his training to keep moving. The coyote darted in and snapped at Skoll's sides, and left behind superficial marks, before he quickly darted away once again.

MUTT RESCUE SQUAD

Jaws snapped centimeters from his as the coyote deflected his teeth, and Skoll growled. He shifted his paws to try to hurt him, to put weight on juncture of leg and shoulder, his neck, to keep his snapping fangs away long enough to kill him -- but a flurry of dirt and grass flung into his eyes. He bared his teeth and lunged boldly to sink his teeth into the coyote, but he missed and the Infernian manage to squirm away. He was quick to leap in, biting Skoll, harrying him, until the wolfdog made space. He snarled, not sure what to do -- then locked his gaze on the bird, still moving, and ran toward it. He'd eat it in front of this mongrel and see what fight he had left in him after.

Weight barreled into him, and Skoll tumbled, yelping and snarling. A voice shouted by his ear. Cartier, run!

He heard fearful panting, above and behind him, then footsteps. Merde! he spat, and rolled, knocking the body -- two bodies -- into the grass. He was fast to leap onto one, pinning an Optime beneath him, then froze, blinking in confusion. It was a dog, some little spitz mutt like Mistral, and he was missing an arm.

Get off him, motherfucker! a voice shrieked, and the other loner bulldozed into his side. He yelped and swung around as she sank her teeth into his shoulder, snapping at her bushy tail. A shove sprawled her on the ground, but then the other dog was on him -- fighting with one arm, trying to choke him out, stinking of fear. Skoll knocked him off, bit his side, then snarled again as the younger dog jumped into him again.

He howled, and a distant voice howled from the Kingdom -- maybe Linden, maybe Haven. He knocked the pup down again, teeth bared, eyes wild, but the Optime dog seemed to have wizened up. Clover, let's go, he commanded, and with turquoise eyes flashing wide at Skoll, gestured for them to run. They did, Skoll chasing them into the trees until he stumbled from his wounds, and spat curses as he limped back home.
