DAEVA LYKOI

Lately those molten gold eyes were set upon the border. She walked them almost every day, never taking the same route twice, never starting in the same place twice, never approaching from the same direction twice. Her pattern was no pattern at all, and from an outside observer there was no telling which direction she'd come from next, or where she would be going, or when. It almost seemed like she did it on purpose, like she had planned it out to be unpredictable, but in reality she merely forgot where she had left off on the previous day and simply started all over again in some other way on some other day at some other time, making something so complex and clandestine out of simple absentmindedness. It would have been utter genius if it wasn't so silly.

That day was different though. She at last had a purpose, a motive for wandering all the way out to the border, and for once she ventured off with reason instead of simply going for the sake of going. On her last outing she had noticed one of the archery stands on the eastern border was looking a little shabby, and with a large ball of twine in hand and her throwing knives strapped to her thigh – hidden away beneath her silky blue hip scarf – she slowly ambled up to the creaking structure in dire need of a little touching up.

The construct itself was in good shape, the wood holding up nicely in spite of the wind and rain the spring had brought, but the summer had burned off most of the vegetation and what should have been a nice cover of branches, leaves, and vines was looking more like a tangled nest of dried dead twigs. Strolling around to get a better look at it from a different angle the false goddess breathed a sigh and narrowed her fiery gaze into a contemplative stare, trying to visualize how she wanted to fix up the stand. There was plenty of fresh vegetation to use growing on and around the structure; she just wasn't sure where to put it. Huffing, the slender femme circled back around and ascended to the top, hoping to spark some inspiration from a higher vantage point – but had no better luck.

As a Sciens, he often found himself wandering the borders as it was supposed to be his job to “watch” and observe. Though, the borders often reminded him of his ulterior motives and often he would just leave, leave towards Halifax or find Izual and they would leave together. Yet, today his intentions were pure. He had made an offering to his Lord just the night before and he wasn’t due for another one until the next night. He had the time and the concentration to do what he needed to for Inferni for at least today.

Belial walked along the border for a while, imagining the taste of Luperci blood on his tongue for most of the way. He thought of the peculiar black wolf he had met in a tree and how his blood tasted so sweet… He thought of actually being able to catch him, offer his soul to Abaddon and then eventually eat his shell. And what a tasty shell it would have been! Still, though, instead of catch him, he lost him to a damn tree…

Belial paused, looking up at one of the browning, barren archery stands, glaring at the damn tree. He could try to climb it, get better at climbing and hunt the black wolf down again… But was it worth his time and effort? He could easily find another unwilling, unknowing victim to offer to his Lord of Destruction. Abaddon was not picky just as long as they were fresh and they were canine. There was some movement above and the gentle breeze carried a scent on it that he knew too familiar… For now, he left the thoughts of the black Luperci and embraced the memories of the Lykoi that he met in the North. What was her name?

”Da… Daeva?” he called up to the stand, catching glimpses of a brown coat as she moved around up there. To get to her, he’d eventually have to take on the tree and use what Gehenna showed him to reach her… but maybe Daeva could be a better incentive for him to learn how to deal with trees…

DAEVA LYKOI

Deft hands had eventually gotten to work gathering up vines and branches, pulling them in close and securing them with twine in a way that she hoped did not look too fabricated. She did her best to make it look random, like the vines had grown there naturally, like the branches and leaves had sprung up in such a way on their own. There was no telling how good it looked until she got her feet back on the ground though, and for the time being there was still much more work to be done.

The sound of her name caused oversize ears to twitch and there was a pause before her head poked out over the edge of the stand, molten gold peering down inquisitively at the familiar face below. She stared for a moment, not because she didn't know who it was, but because she had wondered where on earth the suspicious male had gotten to. He had spent so much time poking and prodding her to join Inferni and when she finally did he was nowhere to be found.

"Hey stranger. Long time no see." She called down with a wily little smirk, gilded gaze scanning his features a moment before she disappeared back beyond his view. Looking around, she assessed the situation for a moment and wondered if another set of hands would work to her advantage or not. She liked to work alone, she worked best alone, but more often than not that meant she had to do everything on her own, and that took time, time that could be spent doing more interesting things. "I could use a hand up here." She finally added as she cut another length of twine to get back to work.

When she popped her head over the side of the archery stand, Belial’s tail began to wag. He liked Daeva. Maybe more than he should have. Maybe it was only because she was pretty, coyote and from Inferni. She had all the best features, though. He took her in as she hung over the edge for a moment – the smile, her evident good health. Though, she was gone in an instant and he wasn’t finished looking at her. His ears perked, hearing footsteps stepping around in the stand and he wondered whether he would be brushed off or invited up.

Eventually he got his answer as she called back down to him, telling him to help her. Belial’s eyes shifted to the tree and he prepared for inevitable embarrassment. Recalling to Gehenna’s words, Belial approached the base of the tree. He looked up at the branches and knobs in the tree, seeing where he could place his feet, which he could grab onto and which looked sturdy enough for him to hoist himself up.

He found a knob and placed his foot there, and found another in which he gripped to hoist himself up. He repeated this process until he could reach where the tree split off into branches. Once he reached the middle of the tree, safely standing between the thick branches but directly under the archery stand, he hesitated. He looked for the easiest branch to climb up, but both of them were pretty barren from branches at this level. He looked for the most horizontal branch and went for it.

At first, he hung there like a monkey, but much less graceful. He thought for a moment that he would fall, but swinging his legs up, he was able to shimmy his way up and eventually grab a side of the stand, climbing to safety. He shakily climbed up into the structure, trying to shake the anxiety away.

”What are you doing up here?” he asked, seeing her with twine in her hands. He had no noticed the branches, as there were always branches up here. He tried not to peer over the side, evaluate the distance between where he was and the ground.

DAEVA LYKOI

The huntress had divided her attention between listening for his arrival and focusing on her work, hoping that the extra camouflage would make the stand harder to spot as well as make whomever was lurking within the stand harder to spot, all without hindering that individual's line of sight to both the ground and the area beyond the stand. As an archer line of sight was among the most important things; if one didn't have a clear line of sight to their target, they could have the best aim and still miss, firing blindly through whatever obstructed their view. Operating in such a way was a little too reckless for the coyjack's taste, and knowing she wasn't the only one who would be using the stand, she thought it best to make it work for everyone, not just her.

When the tree shook a little it finally drew all of her attention and she couldn't help but peer over the side to see where the earth hued male had gotten to. As she caught sight of him, holding on for dear life way out on a branch just under the stand, she couldn't help the amused smirk as it spread across her maw, the small tickle of a laugh in her throat escaping in a snort before she laughed outright at his predicament. Stepping back a little when he finally maneuvered his way into the stand to join her, visibly shaken, she had to stifle another laugh as it bubbled up from her chest. "I was spiffying up the archery stand, but now I need to know what the hell that just was."

She gave him a moment to settle himself before turning to look over the side of the stand before pulling another branch closer and tying it to the side of the structure, working the twine through the small gaps in the boards and looping it around to the secure the branch in place. The tree itself was good camouflage, but anyone looking close enough would easily see the large wooden construct up there if she didn't do what she was doing. Drawing the smaller branches closer and weaving the crawling vines through them essentially created a coat of foliage around the stand; it would take a very keen eye to see through it from the ground and it would be unmistakable from the rest of the tree at a distance.

"Here." She sliced off a few lengths of twine and handed it to him, motioning him toward a side of the stand she hadn't gotten to yet. "Just pull the smaller branches closer and tie them to the stand. Be sure to alternate directions and fan out the leaves so it doesn't look fake." Deft hands were quick to tie a couple more branches and vines in example, her tail waving absently at her rear as she leaned over the side a little more to get closer to the bottom of the stand. "Oh, and don't fall." The teasing was evident in her voice, a wicked smile lingering upon her off-white maw.

Belial’s ears drooped in embarrassment hearing her laughter. He stood there for a moment, trying to regain himself. He supposed he deserved to be laughed at. He did just look like a huge fool, and he knew he would. ”I hate climbing trees,” he said indignantly, turning away from her to peer over the side to the forest floor. It wasn’t “heights” that made him uncomfortable – it was the fact that in order to get up and down from here, he had to struggle. Climbing a mountain to a high ledge would not have bothered him at all because it was natural; and it didn’t include awkwardly, vertically climbing something without “steps” or flat ground.

He automatically took the twine that he was offered and watched her example of the work. The task seemed easy enough. He didn’t know if he wanted to lean over the side like she had been so comfortable doing, but at least he knew he was capable of doing the rest. He moved towards his side of the stand, closer to where he just struggled up from the tree. He reached out into the air and pulled a higher branch or two and attached them to a higher corner of the stand. He struggled with the string for a moment, but once he was able to tie the first knot, the rest came to him easily.

”I think we’ll leave the dirty work to the pro then,” he commented, watching her lean over the side again. He couldn’t help but steal a glance at her cute rear as it was fully being offered to him. He liked how it was colored with the light browns and oranges of her coat and, for only a moment, he imagined his hand upon it.

She began to raise herself up again, and Belial’s head snapped to another group of branches he was tying to the stand. ”So, how do you like Inferni? What rank did you take?” he asked, making small talk for the moment. He really knew nothing about her and it would be smart to at least learn something.

DAEVA LYKOI

His embarrassment was evident in his tone of voice and she did her best not to laugh again, swallowing the sensation as it tickled her throat, though her smile remained. Straightening up, she watched him start on his side of the stand, molten gold following his hands appraisingly before she turned back to where she was working, satisfied enough that he wasn't going to make a mess of her so far beautiful handiwork.

Oversize ears gave an evident twitch as his voice rose up in question, curious about her, and her smile shifted into a mischievous little smirk as she straightened up again, turning around the face him for a moment. Her shoulders moved in something akin to a shrug as her gaze rose to his face. "It's very different from a loner's life, that's for sure. Lots of others around, too many sometimes." She didn't like crowds, or noise, or being ordered around and she had found plenty of that and more when she finally joined the pack. It took some getting used to and even now she still had not completely adjusted, but she was getting by, and at the very least that was a sign of improvement.

"I've decided to become a Sciens." She said rather plainly, her indifference toward rank and file evident in her tone. She had chosen her rank as the lesser of all evils since she had absolutely no interest in becoming a warrior, trader, healer, handler, or socialite. Plus, her skills meshed well with being a scout and it meant she could spent her time at the border away from the heart of the pack, alone. "What about you? Do you like it here? And what's your rank?" As always she operated on a basis of quid-pro-quo; he would get information from her but it was only fair he divulged the same information about himself. Looking at him rather expectantly, her impish little smirk never waned.

Thin fingers wrapped the branches around the poles and banisters of the archery stand. His eyes averted from her rear when he saw the slightest movement of her head. She turned to answer his question and he pretended as if he were looking down at his work the whole time. His own large ears swiveled towards Daeva when she spoke, answering his eventual, small-talk question.

”The higher you climb the ranks, the less people bother you. I should know,” he said, flashing her a cocky smile. ”I’ve been here a while,” he justified, eventually.

Daeva continued to mention that she, too, had chosen the Sciens tier and already Belial could feel similarities between them. Was she a scout just like him? Maybe they could scout together. Or maybe not. Scouts were meant to scout different parts of the territory, not the same ones together. Maybe with Daeva on the team, there will be less trespassers…

”It grows on you,” he commented, looking up and smiling at her. ”I’m also a Sciens, but…” He stopped working on tying the twine and walked over to her. He stood over her for a second, quietly, and moved to gently, yet lightly touch the tip of one of her ears, ”What do you have that I don’t?” he murmured, smirking just slightly. He would have retracted his hand if she rejected. Maybe it was wrong that he was comparing himself to her - comparing their skills, their efficiency in their tasks. Bigger ears meant better hearing, right? Daeva looked small, quick and nimble. It was probably much easier for her to hide, watch and listen. He paused, his orange eyes engulfed her and a faint smile lingered upon his lips as he took her in.

After a few seconds, he backed away and returned to his task in the opposite corner of the archery standing, calling over his shoulder, ”I would have pictured you to be a Bellum. Do you like being a Sciens?”
