fight for the weak ones

Never before had Lyris so much appreciated the simple existence of the sky.

For the first week, her birthing den had been comforting and a place of escape; only the scent of freshly churned soil and milk could be found, the figure of mother and daughters illuminated by the slightest gliding rays of sun and moon. The event of motherhood was in itself enough excitement to keep Lyris Stryder satiated; each day she was presented a new challenge or entertaining observation. Already vague elements of personality were arising from her offspring, which she was amused to watch and decipher. But once the Cavallo had found herself more comfortable with her position as a parent and caregiver, if still a bit fearful of mistake, her life began to grow dull. The constant canopy of packed dirt and mosaics of snaking tree roots no longer provided her mind occupied. She felt fat, even though the majority of her figure was still slender aside from the supple weight that was added to her abdomen and chest; a natural and necessary plus of weight that she couldn’t help but despise. Her breaks from her den were brief and far in between, as it was rare her busy mate and Mani had any time to spare with his daughters (not to mention Luca was still rather new and fearful to fathering; she was calm that he would get it with time). And so the earth had become her dwelling. But with each day that passed Lyris found strength more in the puppies and their curiosity to increase. Though they could only babble senseless noises and wobble forward and back, they had nearly discovered every nook there was to find in the birthing den. It was high time they stuck their noses somewhere other than dirt.

With Indi and Teagan dangling in a pair from her tender jaws, Lyris slipped her way into the spotty sunlight beneath her willow tree and then shouldered her way past the sagging limbs. Eying the hidden location of the gurgling stream, which stood only meters away, the mother placed her charge carefully to the grass. Immediately both babes lost their footing to fall to their rumps, Teagan regaining her footing quicker than Indi, though Indi easily outmatched her sister in enthusiasm as she wiggled forward, intrigued by a fat bee that lazed nearby. Lyris watched the stinger of the insect carefully until it fluttered away, unsettled by the sudden appearance of two miniature predators-to-be. The scarred female then settled herself to the ground with her head on her paws, sunbathing in the much-desired light but never taking her eyes from either Teagan or Indi as they explored. This is where her appreciation for the sky was suddenly sprung; clouds were in countless ways more comely than tree roots and dirt.

Equally sorry for the wait! Also, I got distracted part way through and it shows. -- +300

Cal had heard from his brother of his nieces' existence, but he had not yet had the opportunity, never mind the bravery, to stick his head down the hole to investigate. He knew how defensive Veyra had been when their boys had been small, and he had no desire to lose his nose to a new, feral momma, but even if he had been willing to look in, doing so would have required shifting or else laying on his belly. And while his injuries were healing well, his ribs were still tender, inflamed, and stitched shut.

He was curious about the little girls, and how Lyris was doing and whether she needed any help, so as he puttered around the Fort with little better to do (because Fenris forbid he actually rest like he was supposed to be doing!) he made a loop past the garden with the intent of happening by the birthing den. He knew that Luca's children had not been formally introduced to the pack yet. However, he had learned roundabout that there was no Balia to help with the newest generation of pups. Lucia had been a real gift during his boys' childhood, and he adored kids since having his own, so Callum had decided to pursue the pup sitter co-rank alongside the hunter's rank he had had before going to New Dawn. To do that, he would necessarily have to help with pups.

As it turned out he would not have to merely lurk, as Lyris and her daughters were lounging in the shade of the willow by the river. He could see the splotched fur of Indi and the caped, tawny back of Teagan in the grass. He gave a woof to draw Lyris' attention to him, to avoid accidentally sneaking up on her, and he stopped his approach with a buffer space. If she did not want company, he would not impose. Mind if I join you?

fight for the weak ones

However much she enjoyed resting, being that her body was still recovering from the traumatic events of gestation, birth, and simple pup-rearing, Lyris hated to stand still. She wanted to begin working off the supplementary weight that she had gained without desiring it- but this task proved nearly impossible when she was stuck inside the den for the majority of the days. Determined to take their daughters out of their underground home more often and to encourage Luca to watch them more (or beg until he relented, as he always would), Lyris was confident that she would soon be back in the shape she had been only months before; only with much more to lose and much more to love.

As consequence of this relentless itch to move, the scarred female only lounged in the sun for a handful of minutes before choosing to pace. With long, careful strides, the mother weaved in and out the edge of the wood, often pausing to nudge her orange-mottled and often too-enthusiastic first born to her feet, or gently gripping the adventurous and sometimes excessively curious sister to guide her back to the safety of the soft grasses. Despite the interruptions of small pawsteps and occasional yipping, Lyris was able to pick up the noises of someone approaching, her senses continuously sharp even though they had been out of use for longer than she cared to think about. The Corpo positioned herself in front of her puppies as the vaguely familiar shape approached, unable to help placing a barrier between her charge and anything foreign despite Callum's respectful warning call and friendly exterior. After the once-Dawner spoke, seeking an invitation, Lyris still hesitated, unused to having anyone aside from Luca so close to her daughters. "I suppose," She relented, already noting Indi and Teagan's curious approach towards him. She couldn't decide if they were so trusting because Callum somewhat resembled their father or simply because they weren't yet aware of the dangers of the world, but either way, they had zero hesitation before clambering towards the man's ankles.

Lyris couldn't help but conduct her own examination, unable to avoid the brief, high whine that whistled through her nose at the sight of the Knight's ravaged and stitched ribs. "I wish to believe it not true, even though I keep seeing evidence." She murmured, only half to Callum. She couldn't stand to bear such heartbreaking thoughts, so she didn't allow the man much more time to respond before jumping topics. There was nothing more to talk about. New Dawn was gone, and she hadn't even really gotten to say goodbye. "Your nieces seem to have warmed up to you quick." She commented, attempted to inject a faint air of humor as she watched Indi and Teagan furiously sniff and paw at Callum's toes. "Has Luca told you their names?" She inquired, choosing to move several steps closer, the ever-hovering protector.
