Feral Sisters

Veyra was thankful to the pack for embracing their little family into the fold and safety of their pack, but she still felt strange about the idea of staying here. Casa was so humanized, they all fought with weapons, and they kept livestock. Did they even hunt on all fours here? In the name of her father she tried to embrace the idea of becoming a Cavalier, after all despite their differences Zalen and Jazper had formed an alliance through her and Callum’s mateship. In the absence of New Dawn it seemed as though there was symbolism in their return to the other half of their family.

In there pillow talk the night before, however, Veyra had learned a piece of information that had shocked her. Lyris had settled into Casa and had taken a mate, who was Callum’s brother! Veyra knew that Lyris had left New Dawn but had no idea where she had ended up, and a humanized pack like Casa seemed like a strange choice, but more so than that was the fact that she was mated and apparently had new pups. Never in her life had Veyra ever seen Lyris show interest in a male, or pups. In fact she recalled Lyris being quite distant from even herself when she was growing up.

With eagerness in her step, Veyra set out in the morning in search of Lyris. For the first time since arriving in Casa the feral wolfess had a spark of hope that she could make a connection within the humanized pack. Without respect for Lyris’ space, the ex-Gamma made her way into the gardens and crossed the stream, daring to go as far as to practically shove her face down into the den. “Lyris?”

Her morning was lazy, just like each before since her daughters had entered the picture. Indi and Teagan were gaining strength by the day, and the most exciting part of Lyris' motherhood, she had realized, was determining the personalities and quirks of the puppies as they grew. Her firstborn by only minutes- Indi- was endlessly playful, curious and rambunctious, continually climbing and tumbling over Lyris' and her sister's bodies in an attempt to spark play. Teagan, while she was more reserved and much preferred her sleep over play, was certainly the leader of the two in the fact of her bravery. Without even hesitation the darker girl would approach mysterious bugs and rocks that Indi was wary about, and while Teagan's play was less, her strikes were always more precise and careful, whereas Indi's were less meticulous (though loads more abundant). Lyris, herself, rather enjoyed her sleep as well. While the sudden urge to leave the den and go out on a long-winded run, hunt, or ride often arose, she rarely could act on it, and her odd exhaustion usually ended up winning over. It would take a long time for the scarred female to recover and return to her perfectly slim, perfectly fit former self, but she was all the way determined to have it happen. Besides, God knows Luca needed some more time with their children. He was still a little bit anxious about how to handle the puppies, and while it was more amusing than not to Lyris while she watched him tiptoe around them, she wanted him to be wholly comfortable with Indi and Teagan.

Lyris had taken to lounging, spread out in the den, while Indi and Teagan explored the countless nooks and crannies that the walls hid. Half-asleep in the midafternoon heat, her reaction was sharp and surprised when a sudden voice boomed inches from her ear. On feral instinct, Lyris' first move was to snarl and snap at the unwelcome presence, immediately assuming the worst. But when it registered the face of Veyra, the Stryder managed to avert her attack to the air. "Veyra!" She barked, confirming her original thought as she took a calming breath, lowering her crouched Lupus form to the ground again from where it had rose to block her pups from the stranger. "I nearly took your eye out." Was her first greeting. Indi and Teagan had backed into the corner, unnerved by their mother's sudden movment, but quickly lost all sense of caution in the eyes of something new. The pair inched forward to investigate, and Lyris allowed them. "I'm glad to see you're in one piece." She said, the note in her voice low and depressed, though it was hidden best she could. Even if the female had left New Dawn long ago, it still held claim to a part of her, and to hear news that it no longer existed was a blow her cracked heart ached to feel.

Perhaps Veyra should have known better than to stick her face into another wolfess’ birthing den, after all she had nearly chewed her own mate into tiny pieces for trying to enter the den so shortly after birthing. However, Veyra had never been one for pleasantries among her feral family. In fact she came across as down right rude and entitled sometimes but she simply did not feel the need to beat around the bush when it came to her New Dawn peers.

So with her red tinted muzzle fully submersed into the willow tree den it was no surprise Lyris snarled, lashing out at her and nearly missing her face which only flinched an inch to the side. When the recognition came the mocha female couldn’t help but let her tail flap uncharacteristically behind her. She had lost so much: her father, her mother, her birth pack and her home. It was nice to see a familiar face, even if Lyris had abandoned them for their allies.

Half ignoring the white female, Veyra’s grassy green eyes landed instantly on the two little pups – each clearly taking on characteristics of different parents. To be honest Veyra had not interacted much with Luca, in fact she had not seen the male in a year or so, but she found it very difficult to imagine him being a father. “So it’s true then. You let Luca father your pups.” It wasn’t meant as an insult, but Veyra reserved her filter for diplomacy only. Luckily she followed it up with a nicer sentiment, “I suppose that makes us family.”

Lyris wished she had been given time to prepare for Veyra's visit. The dark girl's green gaze and crimson Damaichu marking caused her heart to twist in a muddle of emotions impossible to untangle. As always, her first impression was that of X'yrin; a woman who's sweet memory was corrupted with a broken heart and eternal grudge. Then Veyra reminded her of her past- the wolfess was so distinctly feral, and embraced it so fullheartedly, it nearly made Lyris homesick. Maybe even ashamed for allowing herself to become so lost to the Luperci virus. But the Stryder would rather be found here than anywhere- she had chosen the most feral route a mother could take: that of raising her puppies' in the natural walls of a birthing den. And last, but perhaps most impactful, was Veyra's unavoidable New Dawn scent, one that was still worn strong and proud but already beginning to wear. Lyris took a steadying stare at her feet to reduce the amount of pain in her chest, barely able to deal with the blow of New Dawn's tragedy at the moment. Her sister- she could call her that now, she supposed- was safe, and in the moment that was all she chose to focus on.

The Cavallo's brief moment of sadness was quickly gone when the last of her depressing words left her tongue, and instead allowed herself to be drawn to a lighter subject. Even just resting her eyes on the soft whites and orange of Indi's coat, or humorously sharp mask of Teagan's face, managed to draw a half-smile from her. As her pups scrambled and bumped up against Veyra's legs, Lyris smiled an inch more and turned her eyes back to the spring-green of their guest. "It appears that I did let him." She responded, half-sarcastically. Lyris was not eager to tell anyone that Indi and Teagan were the result of a mistake, and so she did not provide Veyra with any more information. Besides, she loved her daughters, and could not ever imagine regretting them. "I suppose it does. The family seems to be growing a lot lately." And Lyris was ecstatic at the idea, for she had suddenly gone from being alone to being surrounded by those she could consider, if indirectly, her blood. It was a new feeling, but a good one. "I will introduce you," the mother began, "this is Indi, older by minutes." Leaning forward, Lyris bumped the koi-colored pup with her nose, causing her to stumble, though she quickly corrected herself and returned to the very consuming task of sniffing around Veyra. "And Teagan." She bumped the darker girl with her nose as well, but Teagan managed to keep her footing, turn, and snap with tiny teeth at Lyris' nose and emit a low, playful growl.
