Fate hath its way when all that's learned is sin

The sisters rode in silence. Only the hooves of their horses and the shifting of saddles made any sound. Plague remained attentive, however. Her gaze seemed to always end up on Bane, who rode slightly ahead of her on her stallion. She would, on occasion, consider saying something—always something mundane—but she failed to follow through. Maybe it was her nerves and the way they shook her to her core. Being among family once again caused unease to sprout in her heart. She didn't care what they thought of her, her siblings. Instead, she feared their actions. Haunt's fury still burned in her mind, and it spread to her leg, where it ached dully. Her thin fingers tightened around Silas' reigns.

They slowed when the scent of pine grew stronger, and came to a stop soon after at Bane's word. When she dismounted, so too did Plague. A hand went to Silas' shoulder, giving the beast a short pat of thanks. Tabby quietly slipped her way to her caretaker's legs, where she pressed softly against them. In some ways, the bobcat was more aware of the dark woman's state of mind than she herself was. Slowly, Plague felt her heart steady itself, and her shoulders—where once they were raised in anxiety—went slack.

She knew little of Salsola, but she knew from Bane's brief words in the beginning of their ride that respect had to be shown, lest she be turned away.

As the stars begin to gather, And the light begins to fade

Somewhere along the way she had become their keeper.

Hallow was cold, Victory carried so much sorrow, Fire was rage, Hope too holy, and Plague too mad. That left Bane, who had been shaped to serve to keep them safe. Misery had sent them all (save for Victory, as far as she could see) for reasons she had left unexplained. They rode in silence though more than once Bane thought Plague wanted to say something but she fell silent. Khalif seemed a world away despite the reminders and the way it hung on her like the cloying scent of death, and Plague was very much a daughter of that Mountain.

<"You'll like it here."> The german was a soft rumble as she stroked Dama's dark head and looked into the border of their home. She threw her head back and let out a howl, calling for their Lord Commander or Queen. Another day, another D'Angelo to add to the Thistle Kingdom. <"Just tell them of your talents and give them your allegiance."> She let an encouraging smile slip across her dark features as she waited for her masters.

A return call rose from the central part of their land, and not long after a sharp-eyed bird rose from its source.

What had been a faint wind had died down enough to allow for this, though Salvia understood that her ability to use the falcon would be limited as the season changed. Winter crept in slowly and then all at once. It hardly felt this way now, with the sun high as it was, but the position it hung in had changed and they had limited daylight now.

The wolves adapted. They always had.

When she arrived she came on horseback, riding a great black stallion. It was not cold enough to warrant a cloak, but she was wearing supple leather clothing to help ease the chill from the wind. Even her hair, pulled back so that her bangs remained out of her face, was half-down to help warm her dark back.

Salvia smiled as she approached, but it was a predatory expression.

Warden, I see more of your wayward family has found its way here, she called to Bane. Though she drew short of the pair, Salvia did not dismount. There was no need for it. Her gaze turned to the stranger, though it lingered a moment or two longer on the wildcat, curious.

Salvia looked at the other woman, dark and vaguely resembling her own sister, and her ears pricked forward.

You must be from the Mountain, the Boss commented, but did not prompt the woman further.

Plague silently doubted the words her litter-mate said. She hadn't liked the Mountain, despite her comfort there—she simply tolerated it. Would it be the same in Salsola? Would she grow to like living there, or would it be another disappointment she'd have to bear? Either way, she was powerless to do anything at all.

What rode out of the forest, then, could only be described as her antithesis. It was a woman of Rah'khir—a pale gold, adorned by leather—atop a mighty black stallion. Plague flattened her ears, intimidated. She knew (presumably) that she was a mere insect in the presence of who she could only assume was the Boss of whom Bane spoke of. She was quiet as words of German were spoken to her sister. Plague knew immediately who they spoke of at the mention of 'family'.

It was only when the Boss spoke to her that Plague broke her silence. Her ears lifted and she bowed half-way in a show of respect.

< Yes, > she said, < It was my home for some time. >

There was a moment of pause as she thought quickly of what to say. Talents, Allegiance, she thought. Plague remembered the last part only briefly.

The gift.

<...I make traps, poisons, and I can cook, or garden, and carve wood,> her voice was flat, with a pace that her nerves barely peeked through. She turned, and reached to the saddlebag on Silas' back. Plague pulled from it a pelt. It was a clean and smooth golden brown. She held it out to the woman of Rah'khir, careful to keep it from dirtying.

< This...is for you, Boss. The pelt of a mountain lion, > her fingers shook, though she was unaware of it. < I've come only to serve you. > This was, in a way, the truth. To serve her sister, she would serve the Queen of this kingdom.

The force of nature that was their Queen came, and Bane was glad of it. She liked the woman and was even more prone to being fond of her because of Basilaris. She dipped her head respectfully upon the yellow Queen's arrival and responded swiftly, but warmly. <"The more D'Angelo's that come, the more we can work to honor this place — and you of course." Many hands could do much more than one.

Plague spoke well (at least in Bane's mind) and her gift was a fair one. Mountain lions did not die easily, and the pelt was in good condition. Her sister spoke of devotion and Bane approved, and while she wanted to reach out and put a reassuring hand on Plague's shoulder, she knew her dark sister was not fond of touch. They both had nervous dispositions, but Bane was quickly growing out of hers in the fertile soil of Salsola.

She wondered, briefly, what her father might have thought about this. He had never spoken of Khalif, not in the way that her aunt sometimes did – though Wisteria had been vague with her information – and she understood it was because something terrible had happened there. Black wolves were born into sin and destined to die for their cannibal god, while others lived on. It seemed peculiar to her that so many black wolves might be killed and yet continue to spread. If what she had learned from breeding horses (and indeed, observing children of other pairings) was to be believed, darkness required darkness to spread.

The smile remained fixed and polite, though the truth of Salvia's expression was harder behind it.

With both hands she took the pelt and brushed over it, feeling the texture of the fur and the grain of the skin beneath. It was not quite as soft as those made by the Helsi women, and vaguely reminded her of Fire's work. She supposed that the two wolves might have taken up similar interests, as she and some of her siblings once had.

One might never guess the true expanse of her family now, however, when so much of it had been sent away.

You may find some place for those skills here, if you wish to expand upon them, the blonde woman offered casually, as if this was optional. The sharp glint in her eyes suggested otherwise. We will ask of you here that our rules and Law be followed. Still, you are lucky, she added. What is your name?

The Queen spoke to her, and her golden green eyes lifted in recognition. It seemed so simple; almost disturbingly so. She knew her indoctrination into the kingdom wasn't over. Truly, it'd only just begun, and there were to be more trials ahead of her should she seek their trust. But still, she'd expected more of this first meeting. To her exhausted, travel-worn body, however, it was nothing short of a relief.

The woman nodded. She wasn't unfamiliar with laws and rules. There were many unspoken ones on the mountain, ones she had followed (for the most part) all her life. They were cruel ones—forced upon those of Tak's dark colors. They were ones she detested.

But she presumed Salsola would be different. They had to be, if Bane spoke of the kingdom with high regards. Much of Salsola would be different, if her sister spoke the truth. The priestess was at a loss for what to feel. Should she be hopeful? or, perhaps, fearful? There was no longer anyone around to decide for her. It was her choice, in the end.

< My name....It's...It's Plague, > she paused for only a second before she added, < Plague D'Angelo. >

ooc stuff here.

Plague would learn her place much as Bane had. They had both been shaped to serve, Plague for the Gods and Bane the old woman, switching their allegiance to Salsola and its Queen would had not been hard for Bane. Salvia was a hard, but fair master. Bane had high hopes for Plague, more so than she had for Fire or Hope. Plague was unwell — they all were — but Bane believed in her more than the others. Maybe it was nothing more than being dark kin. <"I would be glad to teach her the ways of Salsola and guide her, Boss."> She had taken responsibility for her other siblings, after all.
