Don't ask God, just holler at the sky

Fluidly dated shortly after the impact. Ves is in Optime. Come check on the poor ravens! D:

When the air blast came, Vesper panicked.

It was momentary, and she forced herself afterward to tend to the matters at hand -- her coyotes, Saut, the caverns threatened by the flooding, the chaos around them.

But as soon as she could, she ran to her birds.

The Aquila rushed to Stark first, thankfully safe in the schoolhouse, and embraced him and wept while he preened her hair. She brought him to Ravenswrest with a lump in her throat, terrified of what she might find.

Black bodies littered the ground, and Vesper went to her knees.

Stark hopped from raven to raven that they found, and many stirred. Most of the limp shapes were mourners or those crippled, however temporarily, from the high winds; some flapped in aching spirals from the branches that remained. The earthquake had not been enough to topple most, but dark limbs still littered the ground, crushing nests and wings, and the smallest and weakest of the animals must have been struck dead instantly from the impact.

Vesper cradled small bodies in her hands and walked from bird to bird, calling to them: getting answers from some, and not others. Most of the birds she found, hurt or dead, were nameless, but at others she trembled.

Shoal would never see the sea again, and Brokenclaws would never tell another riddle.

And when she found Rogue warbling and nudging at his motionless mate, Vesper sat down with them and found that she couldn't go on.

It was pure coincidence that he decided to check on the ravens at the same time as his aunt. In fact, if he had known she was going to be there he would have made a point of putting it off. He was a bit torqued at her to say the least. Seeing her was not a top priority on his list of things to Avoiding her kind of was, but there was only so much he could do to avoid her in her own Clan.

When he arrived at the Wrest with Idelle on his arm pressed near to his neck, the boy stared at his aunt for a moment. Then his gaze moved to the dark lumps on the ground that were bodies. The lost. Idelle made a noise of distress and moved to the ground herself, moving among her flock. Kalli felt like his heart had been ripped out of his chest and thrown to the ground to bleed. He didn't even care for his anger anymore in the face of this loss.

"Why?" he said without thinking, his chest tightening with pain. With loss. He fell to his knees and just stared, not even wanting to see or admit who all they had lost. Not wanting to know.

Idelle moved to the body of Shoal, making a clicking noise and then nudging the body. Stepping back to peer with black eyes, then moving forward, and back again. As if somehow she could bring him back by just nudging him.

Thanks for joining <333 More birdfriends still welcome! :o Sorry Ves is quiet <_<

Stark brushed his sleek dark head under her hand, and she stroked his feathers for some small comfort while he warbled softly in grief. She realized that he, too, might be dead if he still flew among his kith; perhaps his grounding at the village saved him. The thought was another cruel knife to her heart, but her innards already spilled on the ground now. Her ravens were as much clan as the coyotes to her.

She did not notice her nephew until his bird made a small sound, her shadow joining the others who roamed in search of mates, neighbors, chicks. She glanced up at Kallistos, her expression raw, and as he too fell to his knees she looked away. She didn't know how to answer his question.

There was another sound in the copse, and when the dark shape loped toward them, bright eyes wet with pain, Vesper still couldn't speak to them. She watched Conrad walk among the fallen flock a moment, his own birds -- one winging in an injured circle -- accompanying him. The Bellum nosed the animals -- such big birds, but such small bodies -- and settled down, crawling on his belly toward Vesper.

Rogue croaked and flapped his wings in distress, prodding at Quinn. Stark chirped at him, and the big bird flapped again, angrily.

There's nothing we coulda done, Ves, Conrad said.

Kallistos didn't look at Vesper specifically for comfort. The weight of grief had borne him to the ground and there it kept him, his knees planted in the ground. There were so many bodies scattered across the ground. So much loss. The flock would recover, of course it would. It had to recover. There would be other birds. Not these birds. But more. The flock would not fail.

He stayed where he was, even when Conrad came. There was no need to move. Only to mourn. Idelle moved easily through the flock on the ground, hopping up and down to look at the prone bodies. Pecking, cawing, checking. None of the bodies that lay motionless on the ground roused at her touch, yet she kept trying.

Kalli moved toward his bird after a moment, pressing his fingers gently against the top of her head. "Do we bury ravens?" he asked, his face turned toward the ground. It wasn't necessarily a question for the bird. In fact, it was probably more for Vesper. But he couldn't even gather up enough energy to turn toward her.

(000) Feel free to get angry at him bc Izual's an asshole lol.

He had been walking around the territory, curious to see what had changed after the star fell. The waterways swelled like a pulsating wound and the ground groaned with ache. Glass littered the ground nearly everywhere there were structures. Weak structures were grounded, but the mansion still stood strong. He had been inside when the air blast hit, but feeling the force, Izual needed to investigate.

He wandered around the territory for hours, taking note of the subtle and obvious changes that the red star caused. The smell of death lingered everywhere, and it especially emanated from Ravenwrest. When he went to investigate, he didn’t see Kallistos and Vesper right away. He had entered the small forest from another side and observed the damages there. He felt bad for the birds that twitched and struggled with pain. So bad that he had half of a heart to bite their heads off and eat them to put them out of their misery. The ravens were nothing but birds to him. Their death meant nothing other than tragedy.

The further he wandered, the closer the voices became. They were small, scarce. Faint. They barely spoke words. Sadness was heavy on all of their scents, but it was not heavy on his. He leaned against a tree, closest to Vesper and Conrad, saying nothing to them at first. His face held a blank expression, and he held a dead, nameless raven in his hand, looking down at the bird with sympathy. Catching Kallistos' question, he added, ”Or do we eat ‘em?”

And he was totally serious.

300+ will do ;D pp that she took the bird from him (up to you if she hurt him doing so if he was reluctant to let go)

See galleries for credit.

She didn't know when she'd begun to see the ravens as an extension of the clan -- or when she'd begun to see them as family. Somewhere during her transition into clan life, Stark had begun to have more meaning to her, and now she couldn't imagine the birds dead at her feet as anything but comrades: fledglings she'd watched take their first flights, friends she'd trained, creatures who'd given her solace when she couldn't deal with other canines judging her.

Vesper turned to glance at Kallistos as he spoke, seeking comfort in the soft touch of his partner's feathers, and she was about to answer when Izual's voice spoke up.

At once the Aquila turned on him, baring her teeth. What the fuck do you think? she asked, and her blue eyes dropped to the dead animal in his grasp. The small woman advanced toward him and made to grab the feathered cadaver, ready to cut her claws into his hand if she thought it would help.

But then she had a dead raven in her hand, and she dropped a few steps back, grimacing.

It was Conrad who spoke, rising onto all fours and glowering at Izual. Ya don't eat carrion animals, he said, and you don't eat clan. He glanced at Kallistos and padded over to him, leaning a shoulder against the boy. We don't bury 'em. They ain't belong in the ground.

Vesper frowned, and looked back at Stark, who hopped toward her along the ground. She bent so that he could jump onto her shoulder, running his break through her hair, and sighed. What do we do, then? she asked. She'd never lost her birds this way; they'd always gone off to die, been taken by predators, never left bodies or left little when found that it was all the forest and ants could do to reclaim it.

Inferni, croaked Stark. Burning. Making others... understanding.

Kallistos spied the body of one of the ravens that had always been a bit of a jerk to him; his heart lurched in his chest. It was like losing a family member while they were in a fight. The last words he had said to the bird had likely been frustrated, short, angry. Now the raven was dead, never to rise and fly again. Never to pester him again. He'd have been happy to be bothered again if it meant the flock was full again.

Idelle hadn't moved since he had spoken softly, but at the words about eating some of her kind, her feathers fluffed and she hopped toward Izual with an irritated caw. Kalli raised his own gaze and frowned, his ears going flat to his head. A stupid statement, a stupid idea, and Vesper quickly made that clear. Even if he wasn't sure the proper procedure for the dead ravens, it was certainly not consuming them.

Conrad hit the nail on the head with what he was thinking. They didn't eat Clan. Even if there had been a way to eat carrion birds, these weren't just birds. Far from it. He leaned down to bump his nose against Conrad's muzzle in appreciation after the other male finished speaking.

It was Stark in the end who had the correct answer. Kallistos nodded. "I'll gather wood." it was something to do with his hands. Some way to make amends. Though why he was blaming himself, Kalli wasn't sure.

(000) also feel free to tell him to get lost lol. No reason keeping him around if Vesper's not gonna make him help :)

To him, it was only a question; but to Vesper, it seemed, she thought he would bite into the bird right before them. Izual would be lying to himself if he had told them that this idea hadn’t crossed his mind. She rose and snatched the bird out of his hand, but he had given it to her. He had no intention of holding a dead bird in his hand if he wasn’t going to eat it. And since that idea had been shot down quickly, he had no business even being there.

However, he rebutted. Maybe he was plainly stupid, or just really brave to speak out against his leader. ”Too bad… All that wasted food,” he sighed. At first he gazed down at the dark, limp bodies of the ravens, and then his eyes met Vesper’s because she seemed to be the most unpredictable in the matter. He’d jump back if he was attacked, or leave if it was requested. Though, if it wasn’t, he was thinking of leaving anyway. This wasn’t his neck of the woods and it certainly wasn’t his flock of ravens.

”Do either of you want my help?” he asked automatically because it seemed he was the only muscled male present and able to carry heavy wood without a problem. He didn’t want to watch food be wasted, but he also knew he needed to offer his help anyway. Whether he liked it or not.

Will do. ;D And we can probably wrap this up/fade it out if you want (Nine I guess?) since it’s older, unless you want to go into it. :) Whether you guys wanna post again or post to wrap up or just let it be archived is up to you!

Vesper curled her lips to show yellowed fangs, fangs that had gotten a lot of use, when Izual lamented the waste of food. He hadn’t resisted when she took the bird—and she thought she would have hurt him if he had—but this was still defiance, however small, and to her only for the sake of stirring anger. If that was his purpose, it had worked, and it was Conrad’s sharp little growl that snapped her out of a bloody reverie. She glanced back at the soldier and her nephew, standing together, and then narrowed her eyes at Izual.

“No,” she answered—automatically, too. “I want you to get the fuck out of here before I do something I’ll regret.”

Conrad, scowling, jerked his muzzle off to the side to indicate that Izual should take her words seriously. He was more level-headed than the Aquila in this, seeing Izual’s remarks as ignorance rather than intentional cruelty, but it was clear whose side he stood on.

He nudged into Kallisto’s side and went out to fetch wood with him, while Vesper stood in the center of the hollow, cradling the dark little body.

The sharpness of his aunt's teeth received a sideways glance from the boy, his ears flattening and head ducking a bit in respect. Though he was at odds with her in his heart, she was his Centurion above all else. Izual's responses were inappropriate at best. He wasn't even family; hell, Kalli barely knew him. He flashed his own teeth and raised his head a bit toward the other male at the words. There was no need for more than that. Vesper had already told him to leave.

He left with Conrad after that to help with the gathering of wood to send the birds back to the sky above. Never again to fly as more than smoke.
