For Duncan/Leaders

POSTED: Sun Apr 24, 2016 10:54 pm

This post sucks! Eve post first, please

His every intention had been to stand at the border of The Thistle Kingdom much sooner. But he could not have anticipated how soon the destruction would come. He had not suffered for it, except with the regret of not being able to warn them. It was only the hope that Duncan had told them of his message that eased his mind while dealing with the aftermath. Fallen trees and shattered buildings had made the trek back more difficult but, at last, he stood on the border and called out for the wolfdog.

While he waited, he fretted, he smoothed his pants, ran his fingers through his hair, but mostly he fiddled with the gift within his satchel. The very object of his delay and he worried that it would not be enough for the Kingdom's Queen - and after all he had endured to procure it. He cast his eyes up to the sun and prayed to Regulus that everything would work out.

So many things had happened since the night the earth toned de le Poer had practically ambushed the white and gold D'Angelo along the northern border. He had warned him about the sanguine star, that something bad was going to happen, and while the Vedetto had believed him – and had that foreboding thought in his mind ever since he first caught a glimpse of the menacing red orb long before he met the male – he never could have predicted it would fall from the sky and literally shake up their very lives and livelihood.

He had told him to prepare, to return when he was ready to present his gifts and seek judgment from those with the power to accept him or turn him away. For a few days he had kept him at the back of his mind, but the moment the star fell there were more pressing matters to attend to, more personal matters that superseded all else. The lighthouse, his home, had fallen; his pack, his family, was shaken; and now more than ever he was feeling the weight of responsibility and duty bearing down on his shoulders.

Instead of crumpling though, the Confidant had more than happily rose to the challenge. Most of his days and nights were spent patrolling the borders, searching for his packmates, and helping those that needed his aid. Whenever he could find the time to help himself he slowly but surely was packing up what he could salvage from the lighthouse and moving it to his new home, which though smaller was nonetheless a welcome change.

He was there when the sound of a howl broke out over the towering pines of the Blackwoods, resonating in from the north and beckoning anyone within range. With his home close to the northern fringe of the Ruins and nothing particularly pressing at hand, the Vedetto was prompt in dropping down to shift before bounding off in way of the call. He kept close to the coast and slipped through the tangles of the Blackwoods before he emerged somewhere near the first place he had met the male before, in the sparse mixed forest where the pines relented to the maples and oaks.

When a familiar figure came into view, the young de le Poer couldn't help the somewhat relieved smile as it eased to his maw, glad to see the D'Angelo male had survived the cataclysm and even moreso that he had returned to join them, as now more than ever did the Thistle Kingdom need its Family. His lean lupus form made its approach and then stopped to shift up into his tall optime before continuing the rest of the way to meet the male, a hand arisen in a nonchalant wave. "Cygnus! Gods, it's good to see you alive and well."

But then Duncan appeared between the trees and the golden man stilled. His posture took on a natural submission as he returned the smile, his tail wagging fiercely. Part of his nerves gave way to relief at the de le Poer's warm greeting, a contrast to how he had seemed in the woods. It was good to see that he, at least, was doing well.

"Same to you, brother." He had never, in fact, learned the wolfdog's name - something that had been bothering the D'Angelo since they had parted. But there were more important things to discuss right now. "I would have come sooner but well..." He shrugged and chuckled but then his expression grew serious. "How did you all fare?" All he had seen of the aftermath made him worry even more about the Kingdom he was about to join. Collapsed structures, fallen trees, flooding - any could have killed members of the family.

Ready for a leader! [ 426 ]

His cheerful expression waned a little at the mention of the cataclysm but shifted back to a look of contentment just was quickly as it had changed. The scout didn't want to dwell too much on what happened as of late had been doing his best to try and focus on the present and the future, as there was nothing that could be done about the past no matter how much anyone tried to change it. What was done was done, and all that could really be helped was in the here and now, the moments that could be changed by thought and action.

"Duncan, please." His smile did not fade even in despite the brief change in his expression, which was cheerful now as piercing glacier blues regarded the male for a moment, noting that he was for the most part not too worse for wear, all things considered. "No need to say anything more about your delay, I think what happened is a good enough excuse." A soft chuckle escaped him as the young de le Poer tried to make light of the situation, again not wanting to linger too much on the matter as it was all still quite the sore subject for many, not just Salsola. "We are as strong as ever."

There was no need to go into any more detail than that. It was vague, but it was the truth, and though there were casualties and hardships that resulted from the fall, as always the Thistle Kingdom rose above it like the purple flowers that ascended above the bramble thorns. Curious, the scout looked the other male over once again, wondering at what he had brought as his gift to whichever leader would come to judge him. Whatever it was, it needed to be impressive – as he had explained so many days ago – otherwise he would have a lot of explaining to do. "Are you ready?"

He gave him a moment to collect his thoughts before his maw tipped skyward and released a summoning song, which rose up over the trees and drifted away on the breeze. He couldn't be sure who would come to answer, but in the time it took them to arrive he briefed the male on what to do. Show absolute submission, do not make any sudden movements, do not speak until spoken to directly, and be respectful and to the point when speaking. When the sound of someone approaching finally rose up in the distance, the Confidant turned to look. "Let me introduce you first."

I hope a Lokr will suffice!!

The call rose high into a clear, crisp sky; Duncan's voice rang true above the secretive sounds that made up this forested part of the Thistle Kingdom.

It found Lokr quickly, for of late he'd always had an ear to the sky - It had betrayed them once, just recently, and with such devastation that often times the Lord Commander wondered at the providence of his people. The North had suffered less than their Southernmost counterparts; Though slow to begin, the trickling flow of words and stories of the utter demolition of the south had began to flood in. There were reports of scorched earth, forests reduced to splinters and kindlewood, great chunks of the earth carved out and lost to sea as though thrown by some giant petulant child. These things frightened Lokr, who (although a man of great caution and ferocious knowledge) had never before seen the land turn against them with such furor.

But those who dwelt among the briar and the bramble of this packland were hardy. They endured the fall of the Red Star; they would endure all else, a monolith raised by ambition and power.

Hearkened to Duncan's call, Lokr - donned in his leather hunting vest, longbow, doehide quiver and a number of visible or concealed daggers - headed west from the Sleepers and made a direct line toward the sound. He picked his way through the underbrush with the ease of a hunter well-acclimated to his surrounds; moved with the predatory grace of a man who knows his own power, and his own skill.

When at last he found Duncan, Stannis' ex-ward was not alone. Another man stood in the pineglade. He was fair of fur, a creamy ivory with splashes of gold at his face and hands. He wore clothing - a familiar oddity in Salsola, whose peoples often enjoyed the luxuries that civility provided them. Curious, the Lord approached the pair, his narrow pupils lingering suspiciously on the Outsider.

"Confidant," Lokr greeted Duncan with cool tones, and came to stand at the de le Poer's side. He looked the stranger up and down, whiskers curling in curiosity, and offered the male a thin black-lipped grin. "What have we here?"

in the morning i'll be sparking gold
A Lokr is perfect! :3

The gold-touched D'Angelo simply nodded in response to the introduction, though he was happy to finally learn the wolfdog's name. He yearned to speak candidly with the de le Poer but he knew that now was not the time for chit-chat. Later, once he was taken in to the Thistle Kingdom, there would be ample time to learn more about the earth-toned man.

His smile returned and the worry left his face when the other implied that Salsola had suffered little for the event. Although Cygnus did not miss the avoidance in Duncan's response, he did not dwell on it. He would soon see for himself the true extent of the damage to these lands.

As he was looked over his eyes darted away and he slouched a little lower. Then Duncan asked if he was ready and he quickly nodded his head, swallowing hard. His golden fingers reached again inside his bag and as the wolfdog let out the call Cygnus pulled out his gift, wrapped in soft leather. He ran his fingers absently over it as Duncan briefed him, nodding in all the right places. Then the de le Poer turned toward the sound of approach and Cygnus lowered his ears and tail as far as they would go, stilling his hands as his eyes darted down to his toes.

Then he was before them and the D'Angelo held his breath as he felt eyes upon him. Only once the Lord had spoken did he let out a slow, steady breath. His gaze flicked up only to the man's chest, curious, before quickly returning to the forest floor.

A smelly old Lokr will do~ [ 362 ]

Oversize ears tipped aft the moment the Lord Commander came into view, dressed to the nines in his hunting gear as he materialized from the tangles of the Blackwoods. With the ease of one well accustomed to the culture of his pack, the Confidant bowed his head, bared his neck, and tucked his tail as piercing glacier blues found the other male's feet as they came to a stop near him. Stannis had taught him well, and in the time between leaving his tutelage and now it was a lesson not soon forgotten.

"Well met, Lord Commander." The young Vedetto greeted reverently as he brought his gaze up to settle at the Underboss's throat, his focus lingering on the bronze key dangling there as Lokr took a moment to give the Outsider a once over before asking about him. Duncan offered a small smile and turned his attention to the white and gold stranger, a short pause filling the space between them all for a moment as he gathered his thoughts.

In all honesty he didn't know much about him, only that he had kin within the pack and the drive to prove he was worthy of joining them. At first glance he looked like he was more than capable of pulling his weight and earning his place, but beyond that the young de le Poer knew nothing about his skills or trade. This was something the would-be Salsolan would have to prove to the highly perceptive Lord Commander on his own, as there was only so much that Duncan could do. "This is Cygnus D'Angelo. He hails from Baten Kaitos and is kin to Pieces and Bellatrix."

When Cygnus produced his gift cold blues lowered to eye the leather wrapped object curiously, but he didn't draw attention to it just yet, only eyed it for a moment before returning his attention to Lokr. First to be assessed was the male alone, only after that would his offering be received or denied. At least, that was now the scout recalled it going when he had arrived to the Thistle Kingdom, he could not be sure what was running through the Underboss's mind.

woops for some reason I thought Duncan had been Basi's pupil, my bad! Fixed to Stannis.
Also welcome to the dark side, Andi!!

"D'Angelo?"

He echoed the name lightly, voice rasping over the familiar vowels. For a moment it seemed as though a thoughtful frown passed over Lokr's features - He peered a little more intently at the Outsider, looking for the telltale signs of such a prevalent and infamous bloodline. And there they were; In his pale fur he resembled the mirage of colors devoted to the priests of Ankh, golden tones similar in hue to the blacksmith Bellatrix and the stargazer Pisces. This stranger, Cygnus, was paler than both women - Though Lokr supposed that to be of the blood, also, for Basilaris was white as fresh-fallen snow.

After a long pause, the Lord Commander breathed out sharply through his nose, a dismissive huff.

"That name runs deep in the black soil here, Cygnus D'Angelo; Your family marks you a member of one of the noble houses of Salsola," Appeased by the submission shown in the pale man's posture, the hunter allowed the ghost of a smile to warm his grim black lips. "Be welcome here, as your blood allows. Duncan will teach you what you need to know to truly belong with us, as one of the Family," His narrow pupils darted cunningly aft at the de le Poer descendant, though the stern expression he wore was not one that would allow any objection to these terms. Duncan was of a rank now where it fitted him to sponsor a Ward of his own; It would be a telling lesson for them both.

His volatile gaze then darted to linger hungrily on the wrapped parcel in the other man's hands. "What have you brought in offering, to win our favor?"
