a melody of angry growls

[ 000 ] » Played as Eire Lykoi here. This is for Petra, the savior :D

”You guys stay right here until I get back,” the split faced guardian said in the darkness, staring down at them for two more seconds before trotting back the way she came.

Eire and her siblings had huddled together, afraid of the world around them. These were new sights, new smells – none of which looked anything like the land their mother had taken them from. When the wind blew, creaks from the trees sounded like snarls in the night. Anything that moved looked like red eyes peering back at them. Not her red eyes, of course, or those of her siblings, but blood red eyes only given to the most savage of beasts.

Being as young as she was, Eire knew nothing about the situation. Even as their bodies quaked together with fear and chill, Eire was sure her mother would come back for them. She had to. Why wouldn’t she?

A few minutes turned into an eternity, and by then her eyes began to droop and her siblings had spread out all over the small clearing. Eire watched them wander off, ducking into the brush with their noses glued to the ground, hell-bent on finding some source of warmth or prancing off into the darkness. They left her shivering by herself in the cold of the night.

And they never returned.

Eire squeezed into the hollow of a small tree nearby – the hole was just big enough for her to fit, but too small for anything of serious size to be able to get at her. Throughout that cold night, she was startled awake by the frantic, pained yelps of her brothers and sisters, picked off one by one. Oh, their cries would haunt her for years to come. Frantic, loud, echoing. Eire didn't want to think of what prompted those sounds from her littermates. She wanted to think that they were just scared and she would see them again in the morning and they would play again when their mom came back for them. Still, fear gripped her entire being and she huddled in the farthest corner of the tree and willed the present away. She covered her ears with stunted paws and tried not to whimper as she waited for her mother to come back.

How could he? Thought the sandy loner as she shifted from her bipedal form to her smallest shape. Bones shrunk and contorted until the burly woman was morphed into a copper pelted she wolf. Petra had done her best to hold her tongue and just be happy that her brother was alive and well – apparently very happy too, though his choice in a same-sexed mate did not make any sense to the traditional wolfess. But what struck her the wrong way more than anything, was how he and Lelouch could join them. After what they did to their family, their pack, their home? Regardless of how he saw it, as far as the sister was concern, her littermate was wrong.

As early dawn made an appearance, navy and indigo hues progressively transformed the black abyss of the night sky. She’d been up all night, but was too worked up to rest yet. Instead she jogged through the unfamiliar woodlands to keep herself from going back to Anathema and forcefully drag her brother out. The scent of canine blood, instantly plucked her from her brooding thoughts and brought her into the present. As far as she could tell, there wasn’t any pack about, but the scent of pups was undeniable and instantly the Damiachu female’s mind triggered thoughts about Leodar. Her heart panged in the absence of her companion and also in gloom for the poor youngsters that clearly met their end on this brutal night.

Disturbed, the traveler proceeded to leave the area but before leaving altogether, she had to howl a call of sympathy to the parents of the ill-fated pups. Flashbacks of her life out west in the Rockies caused the wolfess to shiver at the thought of all the death her young eyes had seen. Her voice rang huskily and briefly but was saturated with melancholy. With her respect paid, the troubled hybrid once again was on the move. However, the faint whimpers and chattering of a little beast had her paws slowing once more. Rounded radar ears erected as the listened intently with her head to the side. “Is anyone there?” Petra requested quietly into the fading darkness.

She had woken up several times during her short night in the wilderness, and every time the scent of blood became stronger. She imagined the scent trails that floated up from her brothers’ corpses and whimpered in pain as her heart broke every time. She didn’t understand why anyone would kill them. Were they bad? Had they done something they should not have? With the life essence of her siblings so thick in the air and each dream that brought her back to the same reality, the hope of playing with them in the morning dwindled away.

The next time she opened her eyes, it was gray-looking out as the sun just started to peek over the mountaintops and light the rest of the world. Aside from the blood, there was another Wolfy scent that smelled a lot like her mother. Eire scrambled to her feet and bumped her head on the top of the tree hollow, and whimpered miserably. Ouch.

The she-wolf called out a sad song, a mourning call that she had never heard before. The undertones in the woman’s voice made Eire very sad, so sad that she couldn’t keep herself from whimpering in the tree hollow.

The woman had called out, but Eire hesitated. Was she going to die, too? Would she meet the same fate as her siblings did if she left the tree hollow? She was more driven by loneliness and hunger than anything else, and she eventually poked her little black nose out of the mouth of the tree hollow and whimpered some more. She didn’t want to come out, not yet.

An answer did not meet Petra’s concerned question, however the soft wretched resonances coming from a nearby burrow in a tree was all the answer she needed. With confirmation that the sounds were not just figments of her imagination, her nose scented the air a little more closely. The scent of pups and more disturbingly, blood were irrefutably in the air causing the copper fur along her spine to bristle. Who would be irresponsible enough to leave their young unattended in the cruel, cold forest? There was only a single trace of fresh pup scent and it was coming from the same wood cavern where the whimpers were resonating from.

Nose lowered and olive eyes keen, she pushed herself closer to the entrance, trying to peer into the narrow, dark abys. Even if she couldn’t see anything she knew that the young one was there. Petra did not even know if the pup was old enough to understand her but gave her the benefit of the doubt. “It’s okay. Don’t be afraid. I won’t hurt you. You’re safe now,” her voice rang reassuringly from outside the hallow of the tree. A cold breeze ruffled her own pelt and she added, “I bet you’re cold. Let’s get you someone warm and we’ll look for your momma.”

The tones in the woman’s voice sounded so sweet, so honest. They made Eire want to leave the tree hollow and join her. But the absence of her siblings plagued her. They were not with this woman outside, and the scent of blood in the air had not lifted. Was it this wolf woman who had eaten them?

A golden face inched toward the tree hollow and soon crystal blue adolescent eyes were met with green ones as the woman crooned, trying to lure the puppy out. The tones in her voice calmed her enough to make her inch out of her safe little hole. The woman told her she was safe, and while question lay in the back of her mind, she was just happy to see another warm body, another female. Even if she wasn’t the black-and-white figure of her mother.

”Momma…” Eire murmured, thinking of the two-toned eyes one last time before she turned away and left her and her siblings there. Come to think of it, Eire couldn’t remember what she had said to them before she left. ”Ok!”

Slowly, she crawled from the tree hollow and joined the woman, though with the thick scent of blood on the wind, she couldn’t help but crane her neck eager to see its source. Not that she wanted to see the bodies of her siblings, but she wanted the closure. She wanted to know if it were them or not.

”And my brothers and sisters?” Eire asked, looking up at the golden female.
