It can be a long time between meals.

Someone offers you food, you say yes.

Antioch glared down at the upturned earth, his dark nose telling him what he already knew. Beneath the mound of dirt, seawater and reeds, meat was roasting away. They weren't cooking anything large – no red meat – but the birds Versace had brought back were fatty and this was what he could smell most of all.

He felt his wife's smug eyes on his back and tried very hard not to look at her.

See? I told you this would work.

I believed you.

Mhm, Versace hummed, and bounced the gray puppy in her arms. He laughed at this, wiggling furiously. Omar was still young enough to be held, though he was packing on weight and inches day after day. Strong as Versace was, Antioch doubted she'd be comfortably holding the boy for much longer. I let these go overnight, so they should be done soon.

How long does it normally take to cook food?

It depends, the woman answered pleasantly, and finally acquiesced to her son and let him down. The puppy seemed distracted and though he sniffed at the good-smelling smoke rising from the earth oven, he began looking at something else.

With three young mouths to feed now, instead of two, Jehan found it harder to justify his usual laziness and began to step up his game. Truthfully, this was a process begun the moment he realized he'd have kids -- but he tried to hunt when he could, chasing mice on three legs and nibbling at whatever reasonably-fresh carrion he could find to make sure more proper food could be turned over to his children. While he didn't fear starvation -- Kallistos and others spoke truly that the clan would care for the puppies, mutts they were -- he wanted to be a good father.

So he began to fall into old habits: craftiness and opportunism.

Smelling of plants -- most of these for food, strong-scented cloves of garlic and earthy tubers -- the dog walked from the greenhouse and followed the aroma of smoke. Food was cooking, though when he found his sister-in-law and her husband standing near a mound of dirt (one that he'd noticed them working on over the past weeks), he grinned curiously. Hey, folks, what's cookin'? he barked smartly, then spotted the grey puppy and crouched to his level.

Hey lil Omar! Jehan greeted, his tail waving -- though Omar (and his own offspring) would not be little for very much longer. He wondered if they would take after his height or Versace's.

Hi Uncle Jehan! Omar yapped happily, bounding towards the dog's feet. He sniffed and circled at him, reared up and slapped his paws against the the man's legs, and when this grew boring made a singular false-lunge towards his tail – to which his mother, seeing this, made a little noise in her throat.

Antioch seemed more pleased with their company, and though he did not leave his position turned fully towards the Outsider. He was only slightly disappointed to see Clover was not with him, but imagined the young woman was actually doing something useful. He quite liked the gray dog even if she was a dog, and figured of the two oddballs within the Clan she would prove more useful.

Versace brushed imaginary dust from her dress and gestured her brother-in-law over.

I caught some fowl out in the marshes. This is a test run, she clarified. Something like this is best with meat that won't dry out.

Omar hungry! The puppy announced, imitating his gruff father's serious expression.

Jehan grinned and ruffled the boy's fur, swishing his tail out of the way of a potential snap, then glanced at Versace. He wondered how much she tolerated him around this child -- but doubted that his bad influence would spread to Omar too much. If any of the children threatened to take after his vices, it was the thieving Magpie.

Smells delicious, the dog said, and laughed at Omar's declaration. Uncle Jehan's hungry too, he said, rubbing his stomach. Maybe I ought have first bite, in case it's gross. He winked then, apparently testing his limits with the redheaded woman. Not that I believe you capable of bad cooking, dear Versace.

His eyes shifted naturally to Antioch, next, and he tilted his head. So this big old thing -- you guys made it?

Unabashed by his mother's cross looks, Omar paraded towards his parents, electing to weave between his father's shaggy chest and tall legs. He eventually flopped down onto his rear right there, obviously thinking if anyone would protect him from mishaps or worse, coddling, it would be his tattooed father.

Antioch affirmed the question with a nod.

My brother and I dug the hole. Omar helped, he added quickly as he felt the gray puppy suck in a great breath of air. It was all Versace's idea.

I did move most of the rocks here, she injected. It's not just a hole in the dirt.

Right, it's an oven.

Yes, the red-head crowed. There's one indoors, but it's hardly large enough, especially when there's too many people around to cook. This should help make it easier to prepare meals.

Versace folded her arms over her breasts.

I suppose I might as well let you have some, even if you didn't do any of the work.

Jehan grinned, turquoise eyes bright, as Omar pranced and prepared to challenge his contribution to the hole -- one that was not just a hole according to his sour-looking mother. Jehan wafted more of the smoky, earthy scent with his hand and flashed Versace another coy, pleased look at her reluctant response.

It is a good idea, Jehan said. Most of the food I eat is raw or spit-roasted over an open flame. He stepped over to the mound and experimentally nudged some of the dirt with a foot, only to hop back on one leg when he discovered how very warm it was. There's no room in the kitchen to manuever around either, he added thoughtfully, but this way you can get everyone outdoors.

He smiled and went to sit down beside the Secui coyote and the boy. When will it be done, Chef?

Of course it is, Versace rolled her eyes, sighing dramatically. You're as skinny as a post, Jehan – maybe if you learned about how to make food taste better you'd eat better.

She didn't mention his inability to hunt, nor did she bring up his (assumed) forlorn past. Antioch thought the same thing, though thought that both of the dogs were no longer as pathetic looking as they had been before. Jehan was too old to benefit fully from the aid of the Clan – he had already endured a lifetime of trouble, and missing meals was likely not the worst among them.

Both of them, Versace and Antioch, sometimes thought about someone who was no longer with them when they were around Jehan.

Soon, she went on, sniffing the air. I have to get a few more things ready, so you three can stay here and keep an eye on things.

She was smiling as she said this and exited quickly into the back door of the Mansion.

Where's Clover? Antioch asked abruptly.

Jehan grinned wryly at Versace's observation. He wasn't as skinny as he used to be as a loner, but he was stunted. He'd be small all his damn life, he knew, and tried not to feel bitter about it. These things mattered less when he was in a pack, with a family -- and extended family, these folk around him now -- to assist. Still, more friends meant more judgment, too.

I'll be as big as a horse with your cooking, I'm sure, he teased, and settled back in the grass, his arm behind his head, when the woman left to finish her preparations. He shut his eyes.

Antioch's question opened them.

Jehan grimaced. She's probably with Vesper -- or maybe escorting Harosheth. He turned to glance up at the Secui coyote, then at his son. I kind of think she avoids the family now, he admitted. She brings food to the pups sometimes, and sleeps in the room, but... He knew that she was still angry at him for his infidelity, however easily Cartier had excused it, and the look in her eyes when she stared at the pups was one of contempt. He sighed loudly. I don't know how to explain to her that the puppies aren't replacing her.

Omar leaned happily against his father's chest, only half-paying attention to the conversation. Antioch thought this likely had to do with his own absence from the boy's day-to-day and did not discourage it. He had wondered if his own distance from his family would put a strain on things, but generally they seemed happy and it wasn't as if he avoided them intentionally.

Sometimes he considered asking Versace to move, but never did. She had her space and her things, and she was close to the things she cared about – like her brother, the kitchen, and the sweet-smelling flowers that had already begun to fall. Winter would be coming sooner than later, the Bellator thought. He'd be glad for it. Some days the heat was awfully oppressive.

Did you talk to her? Antioch asked, his suggestion almost as direct as his own questions. She's not your kid, he reminded the dog with a little snort. She's not a kid anymore either. Not like these guys, he brought his big head down on Omar's with a little thump, and the puppy protested this by wiggling free. He proceeded then to crawl on his belly and sprawl out in the grass, which he bit at with sharp little teeth.

Besides, Antioch went on, turning back to the dog. You'll need the extra hand.

A faint smile spread across his face.

Behind them, a rattling of noise announced Versace. She was toting a great basket in her arms, and deposited this ceremoniously near her son – who had perked up with interest.

Hold on Omar, she told him, smiling. Antioch, I need you to get a shovel – it's too hot to dig it up with your paws, so don't even try – but after that we'll be able to eat.

Jehan twitched his ears back. I've... kind of. Rubbing at the back of his neck, he frowned. I try to talk to her, but she never wants to listen. She acted moody and standoffish about it, and while this exasperated Jehan, and he agreed with Antioch's sentiment, he couldn't help but jump to her defense. She might as well have been my kid, even if we don't use words like that. She's... had an awful life. Before I found her, I mean. He'd suffered from his own abandonment issues, and their situations were comparable enough that he hurt over it.

Then Antioch joked, and Jehan thrust his tongue out at the Bellator before swiping it along his mouth at Versace's appearance. 'Bout time! He got up and moved over to Omar, scooping the boy up in his arm so that his parents could work without him poking his nose into things.
