Bathurst

It was a big day for Kalila Damaichu. It was on this day that she would begin plucking away at what she needed to make her first big invention, the one that would benefit Sapient and cement her usefulness to the pack. She was determined, so determined, to succeed that she was practically giddy. Her heart raced within her chest, enthusiastic at the prospect. It was as if she had run miles and only stopped now.

It even caused some shaking.

While she dressed, she ruminated. She didn't focus on her pocketed shorts, she didn't fret about how her shirt – a simple thing of reclaimed jersey – looked when it was only partially tucked in at the waist. She didn't bother to try and tame her hair, so prone to becoming fluffy nonsense if she wasn't careful with it. (The humidity wasn't kind to her, never kind to her.)

Once she was satisfied with how she looked, she gathered her basket and slipped out the door of her bedroom. She was planning on venturing to the city beyond the borders of Salsola, the one called Amherst, where she could scavenge. She would go all the way to Hallifax if she truly needed to. Of course, she would start nearby – Bathurst might have what she needed just as easily as either of them.

Her steps carried her down the stairs from the second floor, through the front hall and out the door. It was a pleasant day, not humid but warm, and it made her all the more happy to be outside. Setting her feet, she headed for the outlying city, beginning to hum a tune that would entertain her while she walked. It wasn't a long trip, but it did take some time; keeping her mind sharp was the best way to handle it, rather than slipping into apathy.

Once she entered the city proper, leaving behind the living space of the rest of her pack, she headed for the nearest shop. She wanted metal, and those things that would hold it together. Screws. Nails. Nuts and bolts. She hoped they hadn't all been scavenged away.

There hadn’t been anything special about Sapient’s cities, aside from them being located within the pack’s limits. And she didn't know why she always compared Sapient to other places. What did she expect to be different here that wasn't like anywhere else? It wasn't like she expected to join a secret society instead of a Wolf pack. Sapient had been everything that other packs were, but in a different retrospective. The cities everywhere had been scavenged repeatedly way before any pack had settled upon them. She thought about the slaves that Anathema had recently took on and considered the group's home in Barrington, where they ran rampant as they pleased, taking, trading, and repeating that cycle. It was the cycle that removed the usefulness of these cities, and it had happened long before she or anyone else in Sapient were alive.

Lithia hadn’t particularly been looking for anything specific – just to see what was there, what was available should ever the time come. She had no use for glass, trinkets, metal, and that. She was not building anything. Even though she hadn’t been searching for anything, she took in any writing utensils she came across – which wasn’t much. The plastic sticks that lay around the countertops of these stores had all been melted away by weather and their blue ink leaked all over the place, staining everything in sight.

Lithia had been bent behind a counter, rummaging through the shelves behind the cash register when she heard someone enter the store. Peering over the counter with pink eyes, Lithia spotted her newest friend.

”Hey Kalila,” she voiced, hoisting herself up by the edge of the table, which creaked in protest. She had heard the woman had become their new inventor, and Lithia looked at her with curiosity. What possibly could she be looking for in an old store like this? But unfortunately, Lithia mind only stretched as far as her skills. She knew nothing about the process of creating or inventing. She knew nothing about the preparation or parts it required.

The shop she picked wasn't empy, but Kalila saw no reason to turn away – it was just Lithia, after all, and she hardly minded scavenging with Lithia there. Anyways, perhaps her pink eyes would be able to net her things she herself couldn't spot; two heads were better than one, weren't they? She greeted the dark wolf with a smile and placed her basket down on the nearest flat surface, not caring that the ink seeped into the material to dye it a saturated shade of blue.

What are you doing here? she wondered, leaning forward on the counter to begin her search for anything that would be of use: metal, screws, nails, hammers, screwdrivers, even bits of plastic that were particularly durable. She knew there had to be some of that somewhere – not many would find a use for the scrap the way that Kalila Damaichu would.

So far, she was out of luck. She saw nothing in her immediate vicinity that would help her in her task, which caused her mood to plummet to the far reaches of her stomach. She would travel to Amherst and Hallifax if she needed to, but it was simply convenient to have everything she wanted right at home.

Remembering the ink, she quickly took her hands from the countertop, but it was too late. The sweet, chemical smell of the ink was already on them even if she could not see it in the dim light of the store. Returning her hands to her sides, Lithia fidgeted with her now sticky fingertips. An annoyance was what it was.

”Just looking around for anything that might be useful,” she said simply, sticking and unsticking her fingers at her sides. She had the insatiable urge to lick them clean. ”How about you? What are you looking for in these dusty places?” Even with the knowledge of her position, Lithia knew nothing about what it required.

”I heard about your new métier – congratulations,” Lithia said coolly, smirking slightly in the woman’s direction. Hers would come soon. She just had to figure out what to make of herself, and what would make her useful in Sapient’s terms.

Fortune-telling, apparently, wasn’t going to get her anywhere here. Maybe back in Anathema, it may have granted her some fortune, but here, these people didn’t seem phased by anything they couldn’t touch or use physically.

She lifted boxes, searching beneath them for something that could be of use to her. Perhaps in another building she would find the scraps necessary to make something that functioned properly in making water easier to have at the estate itself. It'd be of use for anyone who had need of it – puppies, people desiring to cool off immediately, midwives and healers – and be a keystone in her place within Sapient. But there was nothing in this worn-out establishment, nothing that she could claim for herself and repurpose into something more useful to them. She would have to check another building.

Oh, I've been an inventor for a while now, she commented, her tail swaying behind her in an absent-minded motion independent of her mind, But thank you! Now I just need to make this thing and I'll have cemented my usefulness. She had seen a picture resembling what she wanted, but she was certain she needed to adjust it, to make it easier for Luperci hands to utilize. All of the plans she'd seen were human designs. Human hands were strange things as far as she was concerned, familiar only with their depiction in old books.

What are you thinking you want to be?

It was a valid question, she thought, thought she wondered if she was wrong to ask – perhaps Lithia had a metier already, and sought not to take a second one, or perhaps she simply wasn't looking for one at all. Of course, she thought that last option was just ridiculous. Thanks to Ardoise, she had a healthy love of learning, and saw no reason anyone would want to avoid gaining more knowledge.

Still, it was a possibility.

Dropping the box back in place, she turned and hefted out a sigh, folding her arms across her chest. Damn stupid buildings don't have anything I can use, she whined in a fit of petulance, put off by the unhelpfulness of this first place she had trekked into.

Sticking. Unsticking. Sticking. Unsticking…

"Oh, have you?" Lithia said, quirking her head a bit. What did she know?

The texture at her fingers bothered her the most, and the conversation barely kept her mind off of it. Pink eyes flicked to Kalila as she roamed around the store, looking into boxes, picking them up, flipping them over, sweeping her hands over countertops, looking for anything that would help…

But what would help? That was part of Lithia’s question that remained unanswered. Lithia looked around the store, too, but she had no idea what the thing Kalila was building required.

”What kinds of resources are you looking to find for this thing?” she asked, hoping to get a straightforward answer so that she could either direct the woman to the right place or help her in her endeavor. Usually, Lithia wouldn’t have bothered helping, but she liked Kalila. She saw a drive for life that she didn’t see in herself.

”Not sure,” she answered quickly, even though she did.

She knew the Sagax was going to be harder to please than Kentaro was, so in order to gather the right type of information to present to him, she needed to make a plan. Lithia wanted to be a swindler – specializing in intel and general deceit. She heard that the position left room to develop many skills – such as manipulation and thievery. She had never been a thief, but she practiced some manipulation when she had been Anathema’s Trader of Secrets.

Sticking. Unsticking. Sticking. Unsticking…

Lithia eyed the countertops and the wooden shelves that still, miraculously, hung on the walls. ”I’m sure there’s more here than meets the eye.”

She walked over to the box that Kalila had just dropped and picked it up to reveal a wooden table underneath. If the woman needed raw parts, there was plenty that they could scavenge here – it would just require a bit of work. She turned and put the box somewhere else, and then feeling something strange on her fingers, she looked down to find that they were covered in a thick coating of dust on top of the sticky mess. Fuck. Now she felt real skeevy. Placing her hands on either side, she tried not to move or touch her fingers together.

She was frustrated.

She'd seen pictures in the books left behind by the humans of great aquaducts, of irrigation systems, of beautiful things to improve the quality of their lives. She wanted those things, and she wanted them for Sapient, and was determined – even in her frustration – to learn how to achieve what it was she desired.

Lithia was trying to be helpful, which the large wolfess was appreciative of. What kind of resources did Kalila need, she asked, and it drew a blank in the invetor's mind. What did she need? Metal. Screws. Nails. Just parts, was what she answered, unhelpful in the moment but necessary. She needed parts, and she'd know them when she saw them, she was certain.

With the urge to lick her sticky fingers clean, she held them forcefully at her sides. She should have done that before she started touching other things in here. She didn’t want the old dust in her mouth any more than she wanted the pen ink. But the pen ink would have been welcomed if it had only been that now. However, it wasn’t. There was dust and a few clumps of whatever stuck to them now. She didn’t want to forcefully find out… in her mouth.

Kalila answered her most important question vaguely, and it frustrated Lithia. ”Parts like… what?” There was a sharp edge to her voice that could have cut Kalila if it were a real knife. Lithia paused, looking over to the woman. She was here to help, but she wouldn’t play guessing games all night. If Kalila wanted her help, then she needed to speak up and tell her what it was she should be looking for.

After all, Lithia wasn’t the inventor here. She had no need for wood, nails, screws, or metal. Though, with a keen eye for detail, she’d be a great help to Kalila who’d be looking for these things.

(000) I went ahead and replied anyway :)

The curly-haired female lifted something out of the way so she could hunt beneath it for some of these elusive parts she was hoping she would find in Bathurst. They weren't there. They weren't anywhere in this building, she was starting to believe. How frustrating was that? Terribly. Terribly frustrating.

She could ear the frustration in Lithia's voice when she asked what parts exactly it was she needed, which caused her ears to draw down into the thicket of curls atop her head. She hadn't wanted to make the other female irritated – but that seemed to be her lot in life, not truly having the words she needed to properly articulate her thoughts. They just found themselves gathered up in a knot sometimes!

You know, she began, Parts. Screws. Nails... I have lots of those. Her left hand lifted, claws scratching at the nape of her neck in a gentle movement. Metal, wood. Just anything! Everything has some use. She tried to smile back at the darker wolfess, but it was awkward at best, and it certainly wasn't the best moment for the smile. She simply had to hold out hope that she wouldn't be abandoned in her search!

At the sharp snap at her voice, Kalila provided her with a suitable answer. She gave her some insight into the inventor’s life, into what she was supposed to be looking out for. Lithia scanned the room, and she saw plenty of furniture, but no raw materials just lying around waiting to be plucked. The likelihood of finding something like that was very rare. If there had been sheets of wood or boxes of nails lying around here, they were sure to be long gone by now.

Instead, Lithia’s mind went to another source: the furniture. Being an on her feet quick thinker, Lithia returned to behind the counter and began looking through the drawers. She sought some kind of tool to help break up the furniture for these useful bits. Some kind of….

Ah hah! A screwdriver! Though, Lithia didn’t know what it was called, she retrieved the screwdriver from the drawer and marched over to one of the tables that held endless boxes of random items. Maybe the items could have been taken apart, too, but right now, Lithia had an idea. Pink eyes met with mismatched ones as she held the screwdriver between her teeth and began moving the boxes off of the table.

She took the screwdriver from her mouth momentarily and turned to Kalila. ”You won’t find those things lying around… but there’s plenty of furniture in here. If we extract them from what was already built, you’ll get your parts. Help me move these boxes.”

Then she replaced the tool between her teeth and began moving the boxes off of the wooden table. Once it was clear, she’d kneel on the floor and begin looking for little screws holding the wood together. She didn’t know what a screwdriver was called, but she had seen Bear Grylls use it from time to time in Anathema.
