Cartier was patrolling once again. He had cut back to once a day on a suggestion from Vicira. It still felt like there was much more that he needed to be doing but he had children now and the pups took up a great deal of time. Magpie loved attention the most of all. It wasn't like he was doing it alone though. He did have help. there was Jehan, of course, and Clover and Molca. Vesper had even taken a shine to the pups as well. But Cartier always had the ever present worry that there was much more that he could be doing. Keeping Inferni safe was an important task, it was why he made time to still patrol even if there were plenty of others who could do so.

He had thought to head home to the Mansion after finishing his circuit but that plan was changed when a scream from the Bay area caught his attention. It was the frightened cry of one of the mares, as he had come to found out as he approached Drifter Bay. An unknown Luperci had infiltrated the herd and was harassing the buckskin mare of the Ash herd while her filly hid behind her.

Hey! What are you doing out there!? The Secui shifted male yelled out as he charged towards what he thought was a lone figure. Get away from her! She is owned! It was as he neared that he noticed the stranger had an accomplice which had originally been hidden by the mare's large body. The coyote male snarled as he continued his forward charge. It was too late for him to change course and so he had to keep on going. This herd belonged to Inferni and with him being tasked to defend Inferni, that meant he had to defend the herd as well.

Hey~ thanks for starting! Mind if we backdate this to yesterday, Sept 5th? :> [ 366 ]

The bay horses had been a constant fascination of his ever since he and his brother joined the pack. More often than not the lanky hybrid found himself straying beyond the borders to find a good rock to sit on and just watch the horses graze out in the valley between the coyote's claim to the east and the babbling Pictou river to the west.

Looking each one of them over carefully, the native Nizhoni male noted that they were nothing like the swift and agile Mustangs of his homeland. The bay horses were much more stout and rugged, clearly bred and born to live through the harsh winters of the north, something he most definitely was not looking forward to. The winters back home were frigid but short, as the desert was not a place to stay too cold for too long.

Up here though, where the summer seemed the shortest and the autumn was already fast approaching, the desert hybrid wondered how the horses weathered the winter when the earth was blanketed with snow and good grass was hard to come by. He supposed he could just ask someone like Vicira or even Daeva but he oftentimes found himself distracted by other things whenever he was around the pretty femmes.

Blinking out of his daze to the sound of someone shouting the Tirones male turned his antique golden eyes up from staring at nothing in particular to the secui shape of someone racing off toward the horses. Intrigued, and suspicious, the mutt spit the sprig of grass from his mouth, hopped off his rock, and took a brief moment to shift into his hefty halfling form before shaking out his shaggy pelt and loping off after the figure.

He arrived just when the coyote – who smelled almost too much of Inferni – charged toward another male and a third male made his appearance from behind a scared and rearing mare. Her scream and the earthy Infernian was enough of a distraction for both of them that it seemed they didn't notice the ruddy male coming at them from a another angle; a quick bounding lunge aimed at the second male still hassling the terrified mare.

314 Words; You're welcome and not a problem, don't mind backdating.

Further movement was caught from the corner of Cartier's eye but he was unable to do anything about it. It seemed that more and more individuals came out of hiding. How many loners, or so he assumed they were loners, were hiding out among the herd that he would need to chase off? He didn't think he could handle this many all on his own but he had no choice. He had already started on this path and it was too late to alter courses now.

He expected the teeth of the tertiary male to latch onto him but he felt nothing. A quick glance showed that the newest male had gone after the one whom had been hidden behind the mare. Was this some sort of trick or did he actually have help? The moment of distraction gave the loner the opportunity to snap at Cartier, though the coyote pulled back quick enough before a hold could be obtained.

For now he ignored the extra individual and focused on the male in front of him. He snapped at the loner's neck and shoulder but failed in securing a hold as well. But where there was failure there was also triumph. His snapping jaws had served to scare the male away from the herd and so he had at least managed to keep the horses safe from one individual. Now he just had to hope his helper was truly a helper and got the other one away while he kept this one at bay.

I wouldn't even consider it. He growled out at the male who he was facing. The male ceased his side stepping to try to get around Cartier though kept his head inclined to watch his partner. "Hector! Grab the runt and get out of there!" The male yelled out to the wolf who was still engaged in his own fight.
