382 Words; Jehan's present

Ren wandered the hallways of the large building that had been named as home to her. Her Daddy had sent her to seek out her Papa in order to give him a present. Her Daddy had told her that this was a very important mission and that she needed to get her Papa's present to him as quickly as possible. Of course Cartier knew exactly what would happen when Jehan saw what was being brought to him and so he remained reclined in the doorway of the main doors of the mansion. He figured that Serenity wouldn't garner as much of Jehan's wrath as he would if he were present. That is why he sent their daughter on by herself, though he kept an ear out for her.

"Papa!" The girl tried to call out around the writhing bundle of fur that was trapped between her jaws but it came out muffled. Carefully she placed down the three week old kitten in order to try again. "Papa! Mere! Needs ju!" The small girl yelled out at the top of her lungs in hopes that she wouldn't have to track Jehan down to wherever he was hiding and would come running instead.

But her Daddy had said this was important and that Papa needed his present right away so she couldn't afford to wait for Jehan to come to her. Just like Cartier had showed her how to Serenity picked up the mostly black kitten by the scruff of his neck to carry him once more. There was a splash of white on his chest that was easily covered up with his chin tucked against it. There was also a couple of smaller patches of white on his belly that was easy to overlook at a glance.

The coyote child poked her nose into each open door that she passed in hopes that Jehan might be just around the corner at any second. So far she was having no such luck though. She really detested the thought of trying to claim the stairs with her Papa's present. She was already having trouble just carrying it the small distance that she had traveled. Daddy said not to hold too tightly but she couldn't hold too loosely either. It was all making her jaws hurt.

00+ Jehan is in Lupus form.

Jehan snoozed, which was not altogether that surprising to anyone who knew him. He'd done his work with Harosheth today already, however, and ventured out with the coydog pups to show them how to pounce grasshoppers and run off some extra energy for Molcaxitl's sake. He'd wandered back into the mansion on three legs and slipped into the library, which was usually quiet at an hour like this, and plopped down on one of the mattresses to nap.

His daughter's cry woke him, and the small dog's ears twitched before he lifted himself up. He shook off the last cobwebs of slumber and hopped off the mattress, hobbling to the doorway of the library. Ren?

The spitz spotted her walking, searching, with some small black bundle hanging from her jaws. He waved his white-tipped tail to get her attention and padded to her, his dark-liver nose outstretched to sniff. What do you need, kiddo? he asked, then caught a whiff of what the thing in her mouth was and recoiled instantly.

Drop it, Serenity! the dog barked, leaned back on his haunches as if the baby kitten in her mouth was a venomous serpent. The entirety of him was stiff and bristling.

Ren was growing tired of having to search for her Papa. She huffed and glanced behind her to where Cartier still waited in the doorway. Her Daddy nodded at her to continue. She huffed once more then took a few more steps. A flash of white caught her attention and as she stared at it it took on the form of her Papa's tail as he came towards her. A grin nearly burst forth across her face but the slippage of the living creature in her jaws quickly had her diminishing her display of excitement. At least it slipped from her lips but showed itself instead in the eager wiggle of her hips. She didn't just wag her tail but her whole bottom instead.

Shock, more than the command, had her dropping the kitten. She had never seen her Papa react in such a way before. "Daddy say bring ju. Say ju needs." Ren glanced back to where Cartier stood once more before nudging the kitten closer to Jehan. "Daddy say impourant." The words were whined out. "I good girl..." But she sounded unconvinced. "Daddy say bring, I bring."

Cartier reached up to cover his snout with his hands in order to try and muffle the sounds of his snickering. The look of Jehan's face had been worth it. Too bad Clover hadn't been around to see. The display would have been certain to brighten her mood as well. Cartier didn't get how such a small animal could upset Jehan so much. What could something so small possibly do to him? Though Serenity's posture did puncture his good mood. He hated how the girl was cowered just because of Jehan's reaction. He had thought it would just be a silly joke, not something that would upset their daughter in turn.

The little scrap of black cat dropped to the floor and mewed piteously, while Serenity stared at her father in shock and whined. She explained that she was only doing what her daddy told her, and nudged the little kitten closer; Jehan, wide-eyed, took a step backward, then stared at the girl – drooping tail, uncertain posture, afraid thanks to the dog’s reaction.

It was for his girl’s sake that Jehan picked up a smile, strained though it was. When the kitten began to crawl toward him, mewling, he attempted to sidestep it – and as a result, danced around a little awkwardly on his three legs.

“It’s okay, Serenity, you are a good girl, I just – argh!” He hopped away from the cat and ended up using his small daughter as a canine shield, ducking his head low and grimacing as he crouched behind her. “Just – uhh, where is Daddy right now?”

Then, voice a high yap, “Cartier, come onnn!”

Ren watched Jehan dance around the kitten and a small smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "Papa, ju look silly." The coyote child turned her head to look at her Papa who was hiding behind her. "Daddy at door." She responded and nodded in the direction of the main doors to the mansion. "Daddy say I big girl. I do myself." She explained the reason that she had been given to enter and wander around on her own.

Do you need some help with something babe? Cartier had tried to sounds serious but he couldn't keep the snicker from his voice. He continued to snicker as he pushed away from the doorway and walked down the hallway to where his mate was hiding behind their daughter. Did you drop your baby? He asked when he saw the kitten mewling and crawling around on the floor. Let me get it for you. He said as he eased his way around both Jehan and Serenity to get to the kitten.

Cartier knelt down in order to stroke the kitten's back and grinned at Jehan as he did so. Did you tell Ren that you loved your present and thanked her for bringing it to you? He teased the other male, knowing that Jehan would have to watch what he said with their daughter around or risk upsetting the girl again.

Ren moved over to look at the kitten with Cartier and licked at it. "We keep?" She asked and looked up at Cartier expectantly. You have to talk to your Papa. Cartier pawned the decision off onto Jehan just to see what he would say. "Pwease Papa?" Ren asked and gave Jehan her very best puppy dog eyes. She moved back over to her Papa and licked at his chin. "Pwease pwease pwease?"

His husband’s voice called out, and Jehan’s mouth pulled into a scowl and his ears dipped back as he realized that this whole thing was Cartier’s idea. He flashed a glare at the Centurion but didn’t inch out from behind the puppy, only watched worriedly as the coyote knelt to pet the little kitten, teasing him.

He opened his mouth to protest, then realized that he had no other choice; he already didn’t want to upset Serenity. Grimacing, he nudged the girl with his muzzle. “Thanks for the present,” he said, trying to keep his chipper tone from seeming forced. “You did a good job, bringing it all by yourself.”

His turquoise eyes widened in panic when Serenity asked to keep the kitten, and he looked to Cartier for help—only for the man to turn the decision over to Jehan. He sat down and pinned his ears as the coyote girl bathed his chin in submissive, hopeful kisses. He didn’t want to let his daughter down, but at the same time…

“Black cats are bad luck,” Jehan said, “and they still babies’ breath, and—” He shut his mouth for a moment then flashed Cartier a desperate look. “There were… there were a lot of cats in the junkyard,” he said, his voice odd now, no longer addressing Ren.

Cartier had honestly thought that seeing Ren unafraid of the kitten would have Jehan knocking off his antics and laughing about it. He didn’t realize that this wasn’t something that the dog would be unable to get over and just laugh off. It was only slowly starting to dawn on him that his husband wasn’t seeing this as the joke that it was meant to be, Ren's whole body wiggled happily when she was praised. "I big girl." She announced proudly. Yes, you are a very big girl. Cartier confirmed the praise. The coyote was still waiting for his mate to join in the laughter and see just how silly he was being but Jehan simply wasn't. He still seemed to be petrified and Cartier just couldn't understand how something so small as a kitten could cause Jehan to act this way. His mate had taken on a larger wolf just to save him and yet a kitten had him frozen in place. It simply didn't make any sense at all.

He was getting ready to correct Jehan and tell him that none of that was true, that is was nonsense to believe in such a thing when Jehan looked at him. We have to give him back to his Mommy. She is going to be looking for him and needs to take care of him for awhile longer but we can visit him and play with him. Cartier promised Serenity as he picked up the kitten and carried it outside. He placed it on the ground just outside of the mansion before he returned.

Cartier moved over and sat next to Jehan, slinging his arm across the other's shoulders. Hey, it's gone now. He whispered out as he nuzzled the side of the other male's neck. I'm sorry babe. I thought you'd get a kick out of it. He continued to whisper so that Serenity wouldn't hear.

OOC: Not sure what else to add for this thread, so we can maybe wrap it up here?

At last, Cartier seemed to understand. He changed gears quickly, explaining to Serenity that the kitten needed his mother—which wasn’t untrue—and scooping the little scrap up to bring it out to where the queen could find it. As it left, Jehan sat and hung his head, feeling foolish, emasculated, and yet when Cartier returned and settled beside him, he leaned into his touch.

“It’s okay,” he said, resting his cheek against Cartier’s forehead. “I know you didn't mean bad by it. I’m sorry I ruined the joke.” He frowned and glanced at Serenity, hoping that the girl wasn’t too put down by the removal of her present. He felt tired suddenly, and sighed as he settled down into a laying position.

“C’mere, Ren,” he urged gently, and rolled and waggled his forepaws at her to invite her to come snuggle. Cuddling up with his family seemed much better than letting cats get the better of him.

ooc here

Ren had been about to protest the kitten being taken away but the promise to be able to visit it and play with it silenced any protest that she was about to make before she could make it. "I see ju later!" She called after the kitten when it was taken outside. "It okay Papa. We sees later." The pup tried to reassure the dog after he had hung his head. She innocently assumed that he was already missing the kitten as well.

I didn't realize you were that afraid of them. Cartier whispered out. He had honestly thought that Ren would have made him realize that there was nothing to be to afraid of and would have had him playing with her. He didn't ever imagine that Jehan would end up hiding behind the child instead. He stroked his fingers through the fur upon his mate's back once he had laid down. He felt guilty for unintentionally torturing Jehan.

Ren came over when she was called and slipped beneath Jehan's forelimb in order to press her small body to his. "Papa go nigh nigh?" She asked as she snuggled into her dog hybrid father. "I no nigh nigh." The pup protested wanting to take a nap.
