413 I apologize for the wait on this

They had been plagued by one thing after another, one wrong turn after another. The tender alliance had turned against them and blamed them for the wrongs. Family members had been led away to be harmed but at least they had been returned. And then there had been the influx of traps that had been set off with no kill to be found within them. They were being messed with and Arte didn't particularly like it, especially because of who she suspected to be behind it.

Arte wasn't much of a scout but there had been too many happenings lately for her to sit idly by. And well, these creatures had killed her father so it was only befitting that she disposed of them when and where she could. It was for that purpose that she had taken it upon herself to patrol the borders more. She wanted to catch one of them in the act so that she could prove to her sister that she knew what she was talking about and wasn't taking a flight of fancy, not that Arte had even been prone to that before. Still, she wanted physical proof that she could take back in order to support her suspicions.

She had spent days at this but hadn't come across anything but tufts of fur that had snagged on the low hanging, finger-like branches of the barren bushes in the forested area. This wouldn't be enough to support her claim and so she had left it be. Arte huffed and her breath came out like a puff of white smoke in the air when she found another waylaid trap with nothing in it. It would be something else for Loki to fix, but they weren't exactly on speaking terms for Arte to mention it to him. It would be something he could find and do something about on his own.

The sound of another trap being set off a short distance away caused Arte to sprint in that direction. She took great, leaping bounds and covered the distance shortly. She found an Outsider having just dislodged the boulder of a dead fall trap. What is it that you think you are doing? She snarled out the words, the fur along the line of her spine was already bristled. What she didn't know was that this Outsider wasn't alone, though his friends weren't to currently be seen as they were spread out along the borders to cover more ground.

OOC: It's all good Sylvey. I am here with Idrieus. +400 words.

The raid showed Idrieus just how far these wolves were willing to go to make sure they ended the lives of anyone they could in Salsola. While the group she was a part of managed to take down a couple of the ones that began the attack on here, there was undoubtly plenty left to try more attempts against her home.. her family. They were lying in wait, no doubt waiting to strike while some of the force was still recovering. Idrieus herself had taken some damage in the attack, but it was nothing too major. Still, it had been a few days and there was time for the wounds to at least close up. It would still be a little longer before the skin healed completely. At least her fur was doing a good enough job at covering up where these had been, and even better than none of them were going to scar.

The dog woman paced about in her home. Artemisia had been out for a while, leaving her behind. It wasn't the first time that it had happened, but with the recent events.. it made her worry more.. Though she would never admit it outloud, she greatly respected the darker woman. She didn't have to take in this lost pup. She could have ignore Cirsium and just left her to starve on her own, but she didn't. She brought her into Salsola and turned her into a proud member of this family. Who else would have done that for her?

Finally growing restless enough, Idrieus left her home, following the scent trail her caretaker had left earlier. She had made her way towards the borders, as was to be expected by many of those in the kingdom. Now more than ever they needed eyes on the lines that protected their homes. It wasn't the first time a trap had been broken, and it wasn't going to be the last.

When Idrieus finally came upon the dark woman, she was approaching on an Outsider tampering with one of the traps. It was just as she had suspected. From where she was she could remain hidden for the time being. It was possible this one was not alone. If he was going to surprise Artemisia with some kind of an ambush, then she would be lying in wait to do just the same. Pacing herself quietly around the side of her hiding place. She kept the snow covered plants out of the way of her weapon. She was going to need to draw it should the opportunity arise for it. Her body crouched down towards the ground, waiting and watching. She would be ready.

282 words.

The audacity of the strangers who set off and destroyed his traps angered Loki. He spent much of his time patrolling the borders--usually accompanied by Pierrat or another, for safety in numbers--and mending what he could find. Sometimes he moved traps around, made them deadlier if he could, and once or twice he was rewarded with drops of blood around snares. The enemies were not so foolish as to be without help too, he thought.

The Crone had not entirely abandoned his craft with the threat of war, and indeed it became all the more important to pray, to sacrifice, to read signs. He sought to comfort those wounded, even though he was no medic. He spent some time speaking to his daughters about these things.

Then that morning, he'd dreamed.

He remembered little of it now, but when he walked and was pricked by a wayward thistle, he recalled only that brambles had surrounded him, and that he must have been very small in the dream.

He remembered snow, too. A copse of trees.

Loki shook his head then tensed at a growl in the distance, and at once curled his lips in a silent snarl. The Helsi witch drew his bone knife.

He was surprised to see Artemisia, and yet at the same time not. But whatever troubles lay between them was insignificant now; he cared for her regardless, and she was Family. Though he knew he would be of little aid, he stepped through the snow and stood just behind her at her side.

"You're making a mistake, darling," Loki purred to the man who disturbed his trap. "Didn't your dead friends warn you?"

432 words. NPCs are Zacchaeus, Selah, & Bjorn; neither should be killed, but everyone can be wounded, and they'll retreat at the end.

The moon waned, and in the night Silas watched it with dark interest. Days had passed since the raids on the coyotes and heathens, and neither Kasper had participated in those fights--which he now found to be a blessing, as their comrades dragged back bodies or returned with no one at all. Their group was ragged, bleeding, though some boasted of dispatching the enemy, and spirits remained high, if forced. They had plans, everyone said. God was on their side.

The soldier watched Tollak weeping over the still figure of his brother and said nothing to this effect.

He had had his misgivings since Amund first approached him for the mission, since those teal eyes had slid so smoothly from him to his bold and eager nephew-son. But he did not voice these. He had to have faith.

When Zacchaeus proclaimed loudly that the Salsola traps could use a little more messing with, Silas hadn't argued.

He stood now among the trees, drumming his finger on his leg, his green eyes watching the young man as he began to mess with a heavy stone. Also hidden in the foliage were two of his comrades: Selah, whom he suspected Zacchi was trying to impress, and Bjorn, who was so dour it amused Silas. He tried to hold on to this humor as he watched the kid knock a stick into a trigger.

Then there was a soft noise, like a whistle, from the branches. Selah stiffened at once and tilted her head. Silas adjusted his grip on his halberd. Bjorn gave his axe an experimental swing. Out in the woods, a voice rang out.

Zacchaeus turned to look at the pair who approached him: a large, bearish woman and a svelte half-breed wolf whose scent was remininscent of both sexes--proof, he thought, that these were pagans, witches, sinners. He bared his teeth in a broad smile, lifting his head.

"He who digs a pit will fall into it," the boy declared. "And he who rolls a stone, it will come back on him."

He lifted his crucifix to his lips to kiss it, then drew his sword.

"I'm not afraid of you sinners," he said.

Meanwhile, in the bushes, Silas sighed and shook his head; the boy talked entirely too much. He kept an eye on the dark Selah, who still listened for her falcon, and gestured to the paler Bjorn. The woodcutter began to move through the trees along the borders, keeping an eye out for others.

They did not need to make the first move.

356 I was thinking that Arte would get surrounded and ambushed, perhaps belly torn out to cause her death.

The large woman had been about to snap at Loki for calling her darling but she held her tongue when she noticed Loki wasn't even looking at her. Well good, he knew about his traps and could do something about them and she wouldn't have to worry over whether or not she should contrive some way to get a message to him. She still cared for Loki, in her own way, but worried that he still cared for her. It was this which had caused her to break ties with him. She couldn't allow him to love her. It was better to break his heart early on than to continue to lead him astray and worsen the devastation. Still, she couldn't let these Outsiders now there was any tension to be found among family members to be exploited.

Arte was in her Secui form, there was a comfort in fighting in this form for it was the way in which she had been taught. She had a mace, though she had left it behind since she didn't feel herself proficient enough with it to bring with her. No, she had come out seeking a fight and so she for days she had stalked the borders in her Secui form so she wouldn't have to worry over making a shift or mishandling her weapon.

What are you talking about? Arte snapped out the words. The male was speaking in riddles and it made no sense to Arte. Of course the large woman hated not knowing something the most of all. Though when the sword was drawn she understood that quite well enough. She growled and shifted her weight to slyly take another step in front of Loki in order to shield him with her bulk, though made it seem to be more of an agitated shifting rather than a protective gesture. Who are you and what makes us sinners? Arte didn't subscribe to any religion and didn't know nothing about them to recognize the meaning behind the word. The usage made it clear it was a bad thing but in just what way she had no idea.

My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong

OOC: I was hoping to have Idrieus injured a good deal in this, probably along her back or chest. She's moving to cut one of the two on the sides off. If you guys are cool with that, feel free to PP it Raze. Once she's injured, she can be out long enough for her opponent help take out Artemisia. +300 words.

Idrieus remained quiet in her hiding place. She wouldn't make for a great ambush if the other one was aware that she was here. For now everything seemed to be alright. Artemisia was here, and it was just the one messing with the trap. Her head soon turned to the side at the appearance of the Crone. Loki was another of those strange males, clear gender but didn't really show in the manner he presented himself in. No, much like Cleome, this was someone that presented themselves with more of a feminine touch. Shaking her head of this, her focus was regained on what was presently at hand. At least now they had the numbers on their side. Perhaps with the two of them, she would not be required to deal with this threat.

Still, there was no telling what could happen. The male before them had finally moved up to his feet after fooling around with the trap, uttered some words that didn't really make sense to her in the context they were presented in, and then drew his own weapon. Artemisia was already ready in the form she would choose to fight in, but what about Loki? Surely he had some kind of weapon on him? Still, this male was a fool to think he could take the two of them on by himself. No there had to be more to this. For now her blue eyes fixed on what was before her, watching and waiting.

Until her head shifted to the side.

The dog woman thought she had heard something moving in the distance. It had to be relatively close by, and although it was light, something told her this was not prey. Quietly moving from her own hiding place, she moved to the side, pacing herself until she was along the side of Artemisia. But this was not the important thing. Turning her eyes forward, her eye caught the shadow of something moving. It slinked closer and closer to her. Taking back to cover, Idrieus moved one hand down to her side, waiting once more. There was no telling how many numbers there were in this area, but if she could at least take care of one of the threats, it would give Loki and her guardian a better chance of dealing whatever jumped out at them.

195 words.

The stranger drew steel, and Loki bared his teeth at once. He did not rush to attack, though, and the scout was wary of this; did he have backing? Was he attempting to goad them into making the first move? He wondered whether he could talk the trespasser down from this little threat display--or if this boy was too set in his mission to be intimidated into retreat.

Artemisia shifted slightly, growling, and the boy once again lifted the small cross on his necklace while shifting his feet into a better stance. "You're witches and slavers," he spat. "Need you ask?" He seemed agitated, but with the wild energy of a young soldier determined to prove himself rather than a fearful or angered one. He took a step closer with the sword pointed. "I am a soldier of God."

Loki had drawn his own knife, though he didn't make a move yet. "You have only one?" he asked, and the silver stranger blinked at him. "We have many gods on our side, boy. Magic, too. Do you really want to deal with devils?"

"Shut up, half-breed,"
hissed the boy, and advanced.

202 words. Bjorn has headed for Idrieus with his axe. Selah is engaging with Loki; Zacchaeus has headed for Arte, and Sylvey, you can PP hits on him! Silas will jump in when he sees Zacchi having trouble.

The boy was entirely too hot-headed.

Silas knew that this fault had been encouraged in him from a young age. In a culture that valued aggression and survival of the fittest, the boldest children tended to rule the pack. The father had attempted to cull this attitude in Zacchi the best he could, but still he'd gone for fighting lessons out of necessity, and somewhere along the way he'd picked up ideas.

All he wanted was to prove himself, and that left Silas wondering where he'd gone wrong parenting him so that he'd felt he needed to.

The dark-cowled wolf gestured to his companion, and a whistle erupted.

Off in the brush, the pale Bjorn hefted his axe, spotting the mottled dog. He bared his teeth, and at the whistle, rushed toward her with a swing.

Zacchaeus advanced on the brown Secui female, thrusting with his sword.

The falcon dropped out of the sky, and the silver coywolf snarled as it grappled with him, beak and talons scoring his arm. Selah ran forward to join her bird.

Among it all, Silas stepped out of the forest armed with his halberd and grimly watched the fighting begin.

309 ooc here

Arte had thought to deny both accusations but Loki had spoken up before she could. It would seem that his words, that his acknowledgement of the claims, had caused things to escalate. Of course Arte subscribed to neither notion, she didn't have a religion and didn't see a point in it or in slaves either. If someone was stupid enough to allow themselves to be made into a slave then she saw them as not having wit enough to be of any use to her. Granted, if she had even found one who could keep up intellectually she would never subscribe to the notion of owning one. In her mind that was just a form of help and to her needing help was a weakness, a weakness she refused to display.

Of course that didn't stop her from helping others. Her first thought had been to save Loki from the bird, and had even made an attempt to snap at the falcon before her attention became distracted when the wolf who had been speaking to them had advanced on her. She snarled and took retreating steps to remove herself from the path of the thrusting sword.

Then out of nowhere other wolves appeared. One remained still while another rushed at Loki. It was the female wolf that she sought to try to intercept before she could reach Loki but got distracted from this line of attack as the blade of the sword was moved into her direction again. Rather than backing away this time she moved forward to meet the thrust. She allowed for the blade to scrape against her lowered shoulder just so that she could get close enough to attempt to seize the wrist of the hand that held the sword in her jaws with the thought to shake her head to make him lose his weapon.

OOC: One more hit and Idrieus will be out. Perhaps we should mark this thread mature? +300 words.

There was the figure coming out of the foliage. It was one of the lighter wolves, carrying an axe in his hands. Up to now he hadn't spotted her, but he was still at a distance. She knew it would only be a matter of time with the pelt that she wore, but at least now she had an eye on her target. Her head only moved to the side as the fight began. The falcon came down along with the wolf on the borders making his move. Then came another one with their eyes set on Artemisia. Now would be her chance. As she revealed herself to her opponent, he quickly made a turn on his feet, turning his weapon against her. Pulling out her own rapier, she blocked his swing, steel trailing against steel.

The two of them went back and forth, each of their weapons tearing at each other, but not against each other's skin. A few times came close on each of them, his axe and her rapier trailing against the nearby trees. Having her back now to the others in the group, he swung at her, the thin weapon moving in front of her. The only thing he was doing was pushing her backwards. Now she was out in the open, but he was too as he came back at her once more. As he came running at her, she ducked herself under the swing of his axe, trailing her blade across the skin along his stomach. It was a quick move, and one that left him stunned for a moment.

Not for too long though. Before she could turn around, the dog woman felt the thick bite of the blade sink into her back. He recovered faster than she had anticipated. It stung like hell. Soon the axe was pulled out of her, her head moving over her shoulder as he seemed to turn his attention away from her. That was his mistake. She wasn't out of this yet. Idrieus took up her blade once more, cutting deeply along into his own back. Huffs emitted from her lips as she narrowed her eyes down to the male. He better keep his attention on her.
