Near Jordheim

POSTED: Wed Jan 30, 2013 1:39 am

Set for February 1, 2013. Since Cody and Luperci don't have calendars and Cody isn't completely sure, but did know that he'd be turning a year some day within this month, this can be counted as a Birthday thread. :P <3 Cody is Optime and the setting is right near Jordheim.

Today was like any other day. He'd woken up in his vineyard den with a conclusion. Perhaps soon, it was time that he did some journeying himself. Not to leave Vinatta, but to surely gather information about the world around him. He had family from the sound of things in three different packs. The first was Cercatori, his father and his quote on quote favorite older brother living there, the second in New Dawn where his prospective brother or whomever had birthed a litter with Ayasha, a beautiful white wolf with a scar over one of her eyes, the third New Dawn where his beloved Uncle Noah and Aunt Fayne lived and finally.. Well, he wasn't sure where Lena was, but if there was a Stormbringer like he'd been told with her, he was all too happy to know that his sister was out there somewhere in safe hands. But he also had to do his part in making a life in this world. His birthday.. He hadn't realized it up until that moment just before he'd risen from his pile of furs that he was a year old today.

He'd almost forgotten with everything that was happening about him. With Caboose on one end, with his family on the other, there was only really one thing that he needed to know and that wasn't inside Vinatta, at least at the moment. She was wondering about in the wilderness with a guy he barely knew but oddly trusted already. If not him, then his sister, Lena who wouldn't take just anything laying down. He shifted within his furs for a moment longer before slowly rising to his feet. Dawn would be upon Vinatta shortly and now was the best time to check his traps he'd set. Quickly, he gathered up a few items he'd need on his journey. He wasn't sure exactly when he'd be back, but he was a part of Vinatta and that wouldn't change. He wasn't leaving the pack. He didn't even think that option at all. But rather thought of what he could learn outside its gates if he were to travel for a bit and back toward New Dawn. If things worked, perhaps he could even learn more from them about the enemy of Vinatta, the one who threatened with war in the near future.

His thoughts moved on to the rest of the pack, Vinatta, at least. Saul, he'd turned out to be a good teacher for him and Gwnyth. The Gyrfalcon, as of this moment, sat perched near the left side of the room, surprisingly without the tether that he'd taken to tying around her feet for several weeks on end. He was always so scared that she was going to get away from him, that she was going to fly far away and he'd never be able to capture her again and speak of his secrets with her. The bird meant more to him then just the few coins that his mother had paid for him in the shop. Rather then that, the fierce creature, the high pitched screeching sound of her voice rather calmed the youth when he was in need of something to snap his mind out of memories. Around his friend, it seemed that the remains of two rabbits had yet to be eaten. Perhaps this was her way of providing food for her young master. Caboose would find herself with meal and water while he was gone.

He'd told her to use his den rather then her home. His den contained a lot more warmth and more then that, it seemed to hold a rather abundant source of fertile soil that made it an easy footed resting place. His hand slipped over a few of the valuables he'd take with him, such as his clay pack. It had finished clay bowls. A few differently shaped forks and bone knives. There was even a vase that he'd managed to sculpt using his hands and his dagger. It had turned out great and with the kiln on the far right side of the room, it was easily glazed and turned into an awesomely decorated piece of art that probably would have even been looked up on within Cercatori had others seen it. With his arms slightly crossed, he grabbed his Frithr necklace from beside his bedding, quickly retrieving his make shift belt and his blades to sling across his hip and with one final adjustment, he reached for the fur coat that he would use in his travels as a means of warmth. There was little to do after this. There was no food that he wanted to bring and across the den, Gwnyth was throwing a screeching tizzy about him waking her up before day light.

"Come on, Gwnyth. I almost forgot you." His high speech, during this little bit of time, had gotten a lot better. At least with raptors. He still couldn't speak with other creatures. At least not those that his low speech could manage. He looked about with a healthy grin before grabbing the leather arm brace from his table, snapping its cheap buttons at each other, then held his arm out for his friend to come along. It took a moment of hesitance on Gwn's part, but like a dragon of the old, she made it to him and with that, he stepped out of his den to walk toward the borders of the pack. The scent markers that would label the beginning of his small, yet healthy journey. Who knew? Maybe he'd catch up with Lena and be back in time to tell his mom and Shawchert that she was doing just fine. The same for Temeraire for Saul and Lilin.

He'd just barely made it to Jordheim when one of the straps upon his back snapped and his rucksack fell to the ground. A rather brief groan slipped unbidden from between his lips, the caramel coloring of his fur dotted with white due to having walked in the slightly trickling snow of the outdoors. He shook his head meagerly for an instant before quickly lowering himself to a knee. Gwnyth at this point clicked her sharp beak in response to his actions, scolding him for what he'd done. "I know, I know. I'm an idiot. Oh no.." From the look of things, one of his clay bowls had been shattered, but everything else was just as pristine as when he'd first put it in.

Hope you don't mind an impatient little girl who loves birds. ;) (+734 words)

Florina Soul

Roughly a month had transpired since Saul's unpredictable gyrfalcon had tried to make Florina his prey. The superficial talon wounds in her shoulders and scruff were all but disappeared, leaving merely a ruffle in her fur and a few scabs that would soon be cast aside. They healed too quickly to even leave a scar, which disappointed the tomboyish wolfdog, having imagined a fearsome battle scar that she could brag about for years to come (though her fretful mother had been obviously relieved the child was not disfigured).

Florina had not forgotten, though. Contrary to what was expected of her, the young Aeska had found the experience to be wildly exciting. She had flown through the sky with feathered wings outstretched above her, felt nothing but air beneath her paws, watched with wonder at the rolling hills of Jordheim stretching endlessly in all directions. She had only been airborne for a few seconds at best, but it was imprinted on her memory, and she kept striving to find some other way to fly. It was her quest, and she would fulfill her destiny.

Florina didn't want to disappoint her Uncle Saul, but she had no qualms about disobeying him to search for Eirias again. She still didn't understand why he thought it was dangerous, because she had not felt the claws at all. Throughout the month she had tried climbing on top of the hills and waiting for the falcon to spot her again, but it was to no avail. Saul must have been keeping a tighter watch on the bird after the incident. She remembered how her Stormbringer uncle had whistled to signal to the bird, but her little puppy mouth could not recreate the sound. The best she could manage one day was a squeaky howl, and all that had done was alert her sisters to where she had run off to, and then she had been stuck with them all day, unable to continue her search. She wouldn't make that mistake again.

This morning she woke up extra early, silver eyes darting furtively about their small Jordheim home. The four-month-old had long since learned how to push the rickety wooden door open, so it was not hard for her to sneak past her mother and sisters out into the brisk winter dawn. Her white paws padded lightly atop the snow, tall ears swiveling as she listened for the wing beats or the screech that had heralded Eirias's approach last time. The falcon must hunt at some point, and she would figure out where he was and ask him to take her flying again. Once she grew big and was old enough to shift, she could find a giant bird and ride on its back... How majestic would that sight be! Like one of the legendary Valkyries!

The cream-furred pup trotted boldly through the quiet village, ecru nose scenting the air every so often to test if anyone else was awake. She was getting lean and long-legged in her young frame, but she still had more growth to go. A nearby sound caught her attention, and the Aeska dropped into a belly crawl, eager to investigate the source before she revealed herself. She rounded the corner around a snowy hillock, and was greeted with the sight of a male packmate she had not yet met, kneeling in the ground examining his travel pack. His fur was a richer cream than her own, liberally marked with earth-brown patches, and curiously enough his bright eyes were two different colors. His floppy brown ears reminded her of her littermate Fiora, subconsciously making the connection that they were both wolfdogs. What was he doing there in the snow? Was it a game?

Florina's short-lived focus was immediately drawn to the leather brace on his arm, and the dark feathered companion anchored there. He had a gyrfalcon. The pup's tail began to wag with excitement, and she abandoned her stalking pose, trotting boldly up to the male in a flurry of snow and peering at his falcon with unblinking silver eyes. "Your bird looks like Unca Saul's bird, Airy! Is he supposed to be black? Can I play with him?" Tall ears perked forward as she looked back to the Hollr, waiting expectantly for him to let her go flying. If Saul hadn't told this stranger she was not allowed, maybe she would get away with it!

Noo problem. :) Cody loves pups. And if anyone else wants to jump in, they're more then welcome to it. :P

Word Count → 903

Cody was always somewhat clumsy, but what could he do when he was a wolfdog, his body somewhat awkward within even its own sheltering? With his rucksack on the ground and his back turn to the world about him, his fingers trailed aimlessly over the clay shards, trying anxiously to pick out each one to toss them toward the side of the nearest tree. Each one was a small victory in itself, but more then that, a small failure on his part for not having checked his pack's straps before he'd left. Being in this form often had its advantages. Such as the rather useful opposable thumbs. With a slight twist of his side, he slowly lifted the bag by one of the straps to begin lifting each object out one by one. Through the whole process, Gwnyth stayed in place, watching Cody with a frail curiosity.

Usually, the bird seemed more then willing to watch Cody for no reason at all. But often it was because he held food or either smelled of clay which she'd always somewhat hated. With the feeling of her eyes on him, Cody slightly tilted his head and looked around, as if sensing that someone was near by. However, it didn't seem to the be the case that that exact moment. There was no one for at least a good three hundred yards from the main city of Jordheim. And though he'd come close to the city, he doubted rather seriously that any there would have been able to say anything to him regardless of what he'd accidentally done.

His fingers curled just slightly as they dug into the pack, trying to get the remaining shards free of her sacked prison. Despite his vigorous work, the youth was always intent on watching his surroundings even when he was doing something. He'd often been given the role of watch dog by his sister back when they were younger pups. She'd race off while he watched and waited, keeping look out for any of the adults that might have wanted to come near. It was a gain both had rather enjoyed and one that Cody himself felt that he rather missed. Puppies in general, actually. He was always the father type, lovable on younger pups when he'd been one himself. Compassionate and courteous, even. His mismatched, Rhiannon borne heterochromiatic gaze found itself settling on the vase that he'd made a while back once again.

Unlike the last time, he didn't look on it in utter appreciation. How could he? After all, he'd almost just lost it and it had been close to becoming one of his favorite inventions. Most of the time, he was fine with things going wrong. He could usually fix them up pretty easily but the broken item was pretty much done for. there was no clue that he could use to fix the item itself, yet there were several different other things that he probably should have taken a closer note of. Such as the tiny pinpoint crack that stretched over the front of the vase. He didn't seem to notice it at all, however, despite his attentive gaze and just as he was told as a youngster, he was always to finish what he'd started without failure. His mother would have most definitely scolded him for what he'd just done, despite the fact that it had been an accident.

Only then did his nose pick up a rather small scent amidst all the snow and trees. A smell that bordered along Vinatta's regular scents, but also seemed to hold an adventurous intent. He didn't turn around at first, mostly because his attention was on getting his things ready, but Gwnyth was a different story. With the sudden sound of another near by, her beady eyes found the pup before she'd even moved within the bramble toward him and that was her undoing. The rather attentive bird stepped sideways along Cody's leather grip, her wings stretching wide so that their full span could be seen for but a moment before her head tucked down underneath her wings and she began preening herself without even announcing that the stranger had come to his place of rest and peace. Rather then turn around even then, Cody decided that he'd wait for the young wolfess to come to him instead.

Eventually, that's exactly what had happened and with a slight raise of his eyebrow, Cody turned around to look at the tricolored Aeska with a rather curious intent. What was a puppy doing out this late and from the scent of it, playing in the snow? But, his answer didn't have to be answered because he took an immediate notice that the smaller girl seemed intent on watching Gwnyth and even looking over her with unblinking eyes. Gwnyth, rather uninterested in the youth turned her back to the two without further sound other then a clicking beak. "Actually, Gwnyth is a girl and she's a very rare color for her kind of bird." He paused for a moment to consider what she was asking. While he couldn't outright let the puppy play with his Gwnyth, maybe there was some thing else he could do to make it better on her. He shifted forward slightly and reached over toward the young female. "You can't play with her, but we can if you'd like. I'm Cody, what's your name, sweetheart?"

Florina Soul

This packmate seemed interesting. He didn't tell her to go home, or ask her why she was exploring, so they were off to a good start. As she watched, the falcon stretched its tapering wings and preened, showing the delicate variations of its plumage. Florina's tail wagged happily, remembering how it felt to fly with wings just like those. She had finally found another bird, and she wouldn't even get in trouble this time. This was so lucky. The bird of prey clacked her beak, and Florina perked up, snapping her own jaws to repeat the clicking noise with her teeth.

The grownup told her his gyrfalcon was a special color, and also that it was a lady bird. Florina squinted at the dark falcon, trying to tell the difference. She had not gotten a clear look at Eirias for comparison, but still, Gwnyth appeared to have the same basic shape with no discernible characteristics of her gender. It was easy to tell with wolves, they smelled different; she lived in a household consisting solely of women, so her male packmates obviously stood out with their potent musk and dangly bits. The falcon just smelled like any other bird to her, though, there was nothing particularly ladylike there. Florina glanced back at the grownup, wondering if he, too, could talk to birds like Uncle Saul, and if he knew Gwnyth's gender because he asked her. "How do you know she's a girl? Does she lay eggs?"

He said she couldn't play with the lady bird. Immediately her ecru nose crinkled, and she pouted, huffing in annoyance. "I played with birds before! Airy likes me, Gwinny will too." She pawed at the snow, frustrated that this adult had chosen not to indulge her whims. Flori could be headstrong or even bossy when she wanted something, and considered ordering him and what the odds would be of him obeying. He did offer to play with her instead, though, and she grudgingly considered his offer before deciding to answer him. "You're Cody, I'm Florina! Flow-reeee-nah," she said, drawing out the pronunciation proudly now that she could articulate her own name properly. It had taken a long time for her, and her sisters as well, to maneuver about the confusingly similar syllables of their names; Fiora, Farina, Florina, it all jumbled together in a flowery tongue twister. But she was Florina and she could say that now, so Cody had better be able to say it too.

She didn't flinch as he reached toward her, she merely watched to see what he had in mind. Almost as an afterthought, she tilted her head, studying the clay objects he had previously removed from his pack. "We gonna play with your toys?" There was no other reason she could think of for him to have arranged them in the snow, other than the possibility that she would get to smash them. That did sound like a fun game. She grinned toothily, prancing in place to get ready. She was good at smashing things, especially with her head.

Cody loved puppies. It was a given fact, ever since he was young, honestly. He remembered how he'd always felt protective over Lena, over all the other pups in the pack and it brought a grin of nostalgia hurdling over his lips. He shifted slightly, allowing his tail to curl around the side of his leg as he slowly came to a stand. He wasn't all that tall, just barely brooding on the borders of being six foot tall. Mismatched eyes, one yellowed, one a cobalt blue settled in on the young pup for an instant as he watched Gwnyth shift to occupy his newly given perch upon the earth.

It felt strange being an adult and for once he found himself thinking of the future and how it could be. He was old enough now that if he really wanted to, he could simply move from his mother's home and into Caboose's. Surely he still needed to speak with the woman, but that was something that could be handled with he returned. Gwnyth slowly moved over his arm till she reached his shoulder, giving him the ability to rest his tired arm at his side again. It was odd holding her weight for long periods of time, but a necessary evil when the bird seemed to enjoy his company now. Even with all her training, the fact that Cody had kept her near constant Luperci interaction, he still felt the raptor tense when she was unsteady and she was definitely that way around the pup who now seemed to be examining her just as Cody had done that day in his mother's company. When they'd first gotten Gwn. "Well, see how big she is? Females are supposed to protect their eggs from scavengers and other male birds. They're a bit more hostile then the male. Male raptors are slightly smaller so that they can hunt."

She seemed to wrinkle her nose almost immediately when he said that she couldn't play with just Gwnyth. But that was something he'd expected. Most pups wanted to feel alive, to feel as if they could do anything and rise above the occasion. But that was what they did on most cases. He was more timid as a small pup, but had grown in what he was while in his short time in Vinatta. With a slight grin, Cody bent down to his knees. "Gwnyth gets really nervous around others. It's not that I don't trust you, just that I don't trust her not to hurt you." He hadn't heard the story of how she'd gotten her scars, but it was enough with just the fear that he'd get in trouble for letting her play with Gwyn that made him react in the way he did. But... he wasn't offering for her to play with him instead. But for both Gwnyth and himself. So, as she answered him, he made a quick click of his canines in a rather abrupt manner and sent the bird soaring into the air without second thought. "Florina, huh? That's a beautiful name for a beautiful girl."

Only.. as he reached toward her, she tilted her head and he pulled back instead. He'd been about to scratch her ears but remembered how demeaning that had been as a pup. Instead he got to watch her looking toward his clay pottery and a frown took over his lips. "Actually, I was going to teach you how to call for Gwn if you ever need her help. If I can get her to trust you, then she won't hurt you." He answered truthfully. "Those are for trading for food and the like when I'm on the road." He paused for a moment. "What do you think? Want to learn how to call her?"

Farina vin Haki
anything you can do I can do better.

So far she had managed to totter her way out of where she was sleeping and had ended up on these intruiging tracks. 'Rina lowered her muzzle to the ground and immediately picked up thousands of different scents, her sister had walked through here not so long ago. It was something that instinctively made the fur on the back of her neck stand up, which 'Rina highly disliked. She had no idea what it was, and never actually scented such a potent smell before. Still, she was a curious little thing and decided to follow it.

Farina's surroundings were slowly morphing into a snowy/grassy paradise, but she was too busy thinking to notice this consciously. The trees and undergrowth had long grown. Dead from the frost and frigid temperatures of which Farina despised coldly. Her fur was thick and did provide her to keep warm. But she still hated the winter season none the less. Not to mention the absence of plant life was depressing and eerie. Sometimes it felt as if they would never come back, as if the sun would never revive the decaying Earth, as if all hope was lost. But then the buds would shoot up and frost wouldn't layer the ground any more...and life was thriving once again.

So she wandered after the scent, her small paws beginning to ache a little. Farina hadn't traveled this far before, and it crossed her mind that perhaps she should take a little rest. Well, let's just find out where this trail leads first. So far it had led past many homes that belonged to others of Vinatta. Farina of course had no idea who lived, as her mom hadn't bothered to name everyone in the pack. She wasn't that close to her like her sisters were. She shrugged her shoulders and slowed. The scent was strong here, and very very recent. The puppy hadn't been expecting to actually bump into the animal that had left this, and shiver of uncertainly rippled down her spine. She saw Florina and another wolf. She padded up to them, puffing out her chest to seem bigger than she actually was. "Hewwo."
