[J] little stars in the wrong hands

POSTED: Sat Nov 04, 2017 5:32 pm

Dove spoke little to the boy as they moved east from Inferni. They made no detours, for in the back of her mind both Mistral de l’Or and all the ranks of Salsola lurked in those eastern woods, watching and waiting for her. She did not stop for the night; she did not sleep, she did not eat.

Silent and still, Ask rested and watched and refused all suggestions for a meal. She was pretty sure Vicira had started to wean him.

In few instances Dove escaped from the cage of her own anxieties and self-doubt to reach out to the boy, but Ask had little to say. They did not know each other, and Dove remembered fast from her experiences with Nazario that her maternal instincts were lacking. Carrying the pup felt awkward, talking to him felt awkward. Everything about their situation was uncomfortable, as if she was doing something wrong.

She considered his parents, made real by knowledge of their names. She wondered if they were as wicked as Khael and Omar’s murderer. She wondered if they were capable of mourning, or so far gone that Ask’s supposed death was no different than the death of one of their slaves. When Dove started to think too hard about it, she forced her mind to empty and walked faster.

By Salvador’s directions she made her way east, and hesitated a long while near to the borders before she made her approach. In her arms, the pup was swaddled in Saffron’s blanket to both shield him from the late autumn cold and from foreign onlookers, and Ask grimaced when she raised a quiet and uncertain sound for attention.

Set on/around October 29. Private for Gen.

We’re the only ones who know

Silvano did not know what to make of the call that came for him. He had stiffened the moment in came, feeling suddenly very confused. A wolf call tainted by something else, he thought. It was not a dog's bark, that was for certain. He changed his course, feeling somehow very glad that he had been on an afternoon patrol with his sword in hand.

The smell on the wind was alarming. Inferni. But it was not strong enough to make him question answering the call. He could have called for anyone, any of his warriors would have been welcome. Yet, it seemed as though it was no roving party of marauders. It was perhaps a diplomatic group? His brows furrowed as he approached, hand resting on the hilt of his sword with comforting ease.

It was a woman, one he had never seen, who clearly did not have the appearance of a warrior. Another scent hit him at the same time, that of his daughter. She emerged nearby as well, looking a little surprised to see the King greeting the caller. She faltered a moment, then smiled at him with a raised brow, challenging him to send her away. She did not seem armed, but as he was about to say something to send her away, the woman proceeded forward toward the woman.

Keeping back a growl, Silvano followed after, refusing to let the overconfident young woman get the better of him.

"I'm surprised to see a coyote of Inferni standing here. We can assure you Skoll has been on his best behavior." It seemed like any problem was likely caused by Skoll, after all.

"What are you carrying?" asked the woman, ignoring the hostility of her father, smiling at the woman lightly. She put a hand on her father's arm, making his jaws tighten.

Kaly has joined them because she gonna need to know what bs is happening >_>

She’d glanced past her shoulders several times and had started to pace by the time a response came. Dove recognized neither of them, and was too swallowed by her anxieties to notice the tension or resemblance obvious between them.

“Who?” she asked, then shook her head as if to dismiss this Skoll as insignificant. Dove knew nothing of Inferni’s wars with the coastline pack of dogs—though at this stage, the news might have been received numbly. The young and immature part of Dove had started to believe there was no life without war or strife. There were no innocents; there were only soldiers and victims. Soldiers, like Sally. Victims, like Saffron. Like all of Juniper Peace, eventually.

As if prompted by the younger woman’s question, Ask nosed his way out of her sister’s blanket and looked with at them with eyes like lavender.

“This is, this is Gossamer,” she said. The name she’d chosen on the road from Inferni tasted strange and wrong in her mouth, but it was the best she could do. It was a name fitting for his pelt of wispy silvers, but he wasn’t her child to name... and he knew full well it wasn’t his name at all. Still, the boy said nothing. “And, um, I’m Dove Reverie. We’re not from Inferni anymore. It’s a long story. I was hoping to stay here.”

“If you don’t mind me asking, though,” she added slowly and with clear hesitation, “does someone named Mistral live here?”

We’re the only ones who know

"Oh," he said simply. It was not about Skoll. That was such a surprisingly fresh change of pace when it came to dealing with outsiders coming to the borders. Silvano had to look a little bit surprised. Kalypso seemed entirely nonplussed about the whole situation, since she did not truly understand the problems that had come in the past with Inferni. He would need to enlighten her if she would even listen to him one bit.

The pup in her arms wriggled into sight. Silvano stared at him without word and Kalypso kept up her little smile at the lad. What the woman thought of it all, she kept very low beneath the surface, enough that the King had no clue what was going on with her. "Lovely name, I think," she said with her exotic accent dripping over her words without care. Silvano almost rolled his eyes at her easy honey tones, at the way she simply knew how to tactfully speak when she wanted to.

What really caught his attention, and concern, was that she had been from Inferni and was looking to settle among them. He had not realized it, but he had relaxed, though looked perhaps a little alarmed now. "Why are you leaving Inferni?" he asked, nervously eyeing the child and wondering why one would leave anywhere. He had left Crimson Dreams only because it had ceased to exist and he could not imagine leaving anywhere without good cause. Shiloh left Vinatta to be with him. His children went off to explore the world, but would have been happy to come home one day. But she was not doing the same, he could tell.

The question about Mistral hung in the air like an unwelcome taste. "No, she is not here, nor has she been here in a very long time." And he had been happy to see her go. "She was not the most.. ah..honorable individual," he settled upon, unsure of how to categorize the woman. He would have called her a traitor and a poisoner if he knew what she had done to his family in particular.

"It doesn't matter," said the woman softly, moving closer to Dove with her arms outstretched. "May I?" she asked with a smile, a somehow innocent look on her face. Silvano hid his scowl as best as he could.

As if numb, she did not flinch to protect the child when the older woman drew near, or when the king eyed the boy as if it were a threat. The pup stared at them, as wearied and numb to their suspicions as the coyote carrying him.

Lacking motherly qualities, Dove furrowed her brows but handed the boy over when the young woman reached for him. Though her eyes did not leave the two, Dove stretched her arms and back, and moved with an informality and freedom as if more than just the boy’s weight had been taken from her.

“I don’t want to fight in another stupid war,” Dove told the king. She shrugged, youthfully dismissal, and avoided his eyes particularly when Silvano confirmed Mistral to be long gone. Quiet and steely, she glanced between the two packmates and asked, “So, who are you? Can I stay?”

We’re the only ones who know

Silvano was surprised when the jittery woman handed over the pup, who seemed equally uncomfortable with the situation as she did. For all that the child seemed young, it seemed to understand enough. Whatever the situation was, Silvano did feel worried about what the woman brought with her. He was uncertain what the story was, unsure if it was true, but knew that he had to judge a whole lot of other things here.

Kalypso, meanwhile, displayed a surprising amount of maternal instinct when she took the child into her arms, smiling at Gossamer with some strange maternal warmth that was entirely unexpected. Silvano had to tear his eyes away from the woman to his daughter with a child.

"I don't see why not," he said slowly, forced to look back at Dove. "Dove, was it?" He did not really wait for an answer. "If Inferni comes baring down on us, we will look to you for answers, but we will not look to toss you out unless it is grievous. We are loyal to those who are loyal to us. Can you do that?" He looked at her, then at his daughter. She stared back at him, cocky-grinned.

She spun a little, hair bouncing. "I can show you around, if you would like. Where you can rest is probably your biggest thought right now." Silvano winced. She was brash.
