The memories of winter whispered wordlessly

Late afternoon, the Ruins

The world stretched and flourished across still forests and sparse meadows, becoming a twiddling discord of noise and disturbance. The gilded man returned to the remembrance of the dark winter times then, the gentle blanket of pitch black draped over a snow-less skeleton forest. It’d only been himself and his dear demons.

The evening stretched long and lazy now, bright yet lean still until summer breached the lands. The limp form of a gangly rabbit dangled from the predator’s robust jaws, flecked with blood and the memories of a beating heart. Another gift to leave by his son’s doorstep, should the family desire it.

The times differed very little aside from these things. Every day that rose was a day he’d already lived, and it felt and tasted the same. Like ash and brimstone.

The day was growing old as the Warden wandered along one of many paths through the Ruins, shadows stretching before his silhouette. Old blood danced upon his tongue and crows sang throaty songs to his wolfish ears from far above.

He’d received no letter from Violeta yet. It worried him.

The crumbling towers and stone walls hinted at the grandeur of the castle that once towered above the land, taller than any tree had any right to be and built from the same stone of which the heart of the Halcyon Mountains was made of. The structure in itself had been a statement of power for which it was chosen as the residency for Salsola’s elite.

She felt strangely exposed amongst rocks and thorns. The woods were her true home, where the ancient trees cast shadows so thick they shrouded the forest-floor in darkness even during the brightest hours of the day. At the centre of the Kingdom the underbrush offered decent coverage from the prying eyes but the constant traffic of members and horses had thinned the vegetation significantly allowing the sun-light to drown out the gloom of which Kaeli was quite fond of.

Her steps were aimless as she scouted the place, re- acquainting herself with the layout of the buildings which occupants had changed during her absence. Her body was adorned with her accustomed set of brutal-looking jewellery and a couple raven-feathers were scattered throughout her mane. On her shoulder Dalek croaked every so often at his partners who answered from the air, circling about with their beady eyes attentive to any sign of movement.

The male gurgled in his mistress ear, announcing the nearness of a stranger. The scent of blood reached her before the golden Warden came into view. She knew of the male even if they had never been formally introduced. His prowess as a warrior was well-known which made him an interesting individual in her eye, a rival or perhaps a potential ally worth watching closely. ”Greetings.” Her voice was coarse from lack of use and the court dip she offered was more mechanical than heartfelt.

What he is really trying to say is hello welcome back nice to see you, Kaeli!

The dead animal in his jaws cooled quickly, trickling blood had coagulated as it’d crawled down and settled along the pale wrath’s jaw and chin. The scent of death would cling to his face for the rest of the day, a dear friend that’d become a dear friend.

Occasionally, the gilded man glanced to the pooling shadows beneath crumbling layers of stone and overgrown verdure. The scents of the creatures that made their homes here lay thick along the route, though no living creatures were to be seen for a while.

Once met with a female of flesh and blood, the golden male slowed his gait, his white-tipped tail flicking behind him once. Her dark features were recognizable to his crimson gaze, but no name appeared to grace his tongue. The Lykoi valued his solitude most of all, and so it was perhaps not so strange that she was a mere decipherable stranger.

She greeted him, and Itachi let the bloodied rabbit fall limply to the ground with a wet thud and sat down. Salmon tongue leaped out to lick his muzzle, tasting stale, dead blood. The wolf’s exterior exposed the hollow emptiness within, but he supposed he could make an effort.

”You are?” A Salsolan, naturally, but anything beyond the point would be guesswork. Not that he was likely to care. Her optime form stood tall above his simple lupus silhouette, but he wasn’t a being that was easily intimidated by useless things. He didn’t recognize the raven seated on her shoulder either.

Her eyes fixed on the blood at his muzzle, a feral hunger veiling her gaze for the slightest of seconds before she remind herself of her place. Her feathered companions embraced more easily their lusty desire for blood, hissing in deep voices their desire for a bite. Their mistress silenced them with an irritated growl and a tap on Dalek’s beak. There would be food for them soon, she never failed to provide fresh meet for their ravenous gullets.

The question did not bewilder her for she knew her face would be known by a few and her name by even fewer. It was the red-eyed Lykoi’s daughter who may perhaps recall her better from more recent encounters at the Outpost. It didn’t matter either way. ”Kaeli Blacksun, recently returned from the Outpost.” Simplicity of speech appeared to be favoured by the other and so she was happy to accommodate.

”I heard you are one of the finest warriors around.” The compliment came easy for it was true. The man would no doubt present a challenge if their blades would ever meet in combat. Who would be the victor in such a battle she could only guess. ”Mayhaps one of the weapons I brought from Portland catches your eye, if you care to take a look at them.” She had kept the rapier and spears for trade, fine pieces she hadn’t taken to use very often. If a fellow Salsolan had better use for them so be it, as long as the exchange was fair she would be happy to part from them.
