Redtooth

Honrin

Having heard the rumors from a traveling trader, Redtooth had to see for himself. Captivated by the thought of otherworldly flowers of all colors sprouting from the southern cliffs, towering like trees, he saddled up the dead wolf's horse and rode south. His intentions were pure enough, having been guided toward this strange happening by not only simple curiosity, but a will to somehow learn what this plant could offer the clan. If it could be cultivated. If it could be traded. As a member of the Triumvirate and farmer extraordinaire, Redtooth took this task upon himself.

Boone, thinking that Redtooth's mention of mysterious and exotic intoxicating plants growing on the coast were ripe for his garden invited himself along, but Redtooth remembered the trader's warning. Something ain't right, the dog told him. It ain't natural. The dog described how he somehow lost himself, explaining that the scent does something to your head, man. Redtooth took the warnings for what they were, ramblings from a trader that was perhaps a bit unhinged, but it was enough for him to not allow Boone along. Taking with him supplies to make camp and enough food for the ride, Redtooth departed Inferni at dawn.

The ride went by with little even. Redtooth occasionally gnawed on jerky as he guided his horse past the mountains and toward the cliffs on southwest shore. The trip took several days on horseback.

As he drew near to the cliffs, about a mile out, Redtooth noticed an alluring scent carried on the wind, one unlike any he had ever smelled before. It was pleasant, cloyingly so, but difficult to describe. The closer he rode, the stronger it became. On the horizon, he saw the grand stalks rising from the cliffs. They swayed in the wind, inviting him closer and closer still. Redtooth complied, feeling as if it was what he was meant to do. As if it were some imperative that he must get closer. It was clear to him that the scent had an effect on his horse as well. Perhaps even stronger.

Redtooth dismounted and led the horse closer on a line.

He could see the flowers clearly now. Dazzling and bright. Swaying. Calling. Singing. He breathed deep and could no longer recall for the life of him why he had come.

He was also drawn by tales but those of his pack-mates rather than travelers on the road. There was a terrible unease that sat in his stomach. Callum's mate had disappeared over the edge, drawn by some unspeakable impulse. Callum's descriptions set his teeth on edge and his fur to bristling. So he rode Salvia, she was the fastest and most sure footed. He didn't know why he wanted to see them for himself, but it would certainly be a sight to behold.

He saw them a long time before he would reach them, horrifying distortions of nature that towered over even the regular trees. He knew that none of the northern gods would have permitted such a malevolent thing to develop.

A way ahead of him there was another like himself who had come to gawk at the alien plants. Disturbed by what he saw, Honrin drove his heels into the flanks of his mount, drawing out the cloth he had brought just for this event Callum had said the siren's call was almost impossible to ignore. The cloth was heavily soaked with a solution of peppermint and tallow.

As he neared the man he called out, "HEY, HEY GET AWAY FROM THEM!" The other red male barely even twitched. He pulled Salvia up short backwards away from the flowers seductive odor, cupping his hands and shouting again.

Redtooth

OOC here.

The spell of the flowers was not so easily broken. It was strange magic; unnatural and deceptively dangerous. Redtooth was a moth to flame, unbridled from the trappings of logic or reason and ready to beat himself to death against the alluring light. The scent had the same ensnaring effect on Redtooth's horse. She followed mindlessly as Redtooth tugged along at her lead with a limp and relaxed wrist.

All was calm. All was right. Home was here among the flowers and their empty promises led Redtooth right toward the cliff.

A voice broke the eerie quiet, punctuated only by the turbulent swishing of an angry sea fifty feet below. Mere paces from the threshold, Redtooth hesitated for a moment to turn toward the voice with a look of dopey confusion. His head was swimming in a hot and heavy haze. He let go of the horse's lead and she ambled forward toward the edge.

Redtooth smiled and waved at the stranger. He drew a finger through the air and pointed at the flowers' waving heads mouthing, look. Then, undeterred, Redtooth's horse slipped over the threshold and fell into the sea.

He was tying the knot as fast as his fumbling fingers would let him. The heart in his chest pounded. As the other man was eerily calm; Honrin was deep into panic, sure that he was about to witness a man fall to his death. It had been a long time since such a sick sense had come to him. Underneath all the fissures of his nervous system, he could feel the calling, the pulling that urged him to follow and be complete. The same that called the Inferni man, who turned to point for Honrin's comprehension.

The horse screamed bloody murder as it tumbled down the sheer cliff-face, the horrible crunching noise its body made would haunt his nightmares and ring between his ears in the darkness.

The man was still serenely staring and now turning away and Honrin's heart stuttered. He leapt forwards, grabbing hold of the coyote by clothes and skin and fur, by whatever he could grasp with reaching dark claws and pale fingers. Instincts roared at him to let go, to flee and save his own skin.

The red man pulled him forwards with heavy steps and there was the cliff edge and Honrin's pupils shrank to tiny specs as the blood soaked rock jutted out sharply. Rust and crimson and the swirling ocean and vertigo tipped his head on its side.

The horse's broken body was in view, impaled on the out-thrusting rock-face, bones and muscle and vicira in a starburst that was quickly being swallowed by the sea. He screamed, screamed like a little bitch with peppermint and tallow in his nose and ever, always below it the siren's temptation reached, telling him it would be okay, he should just answer the call.

And he became the sun, to shine upon the worthy

Redtooth

OOC here.

The man drew near, but Redtooth didn't mind. Any could answer the flower's call. All were welcome in the beauty of eternity. It did not yet register for Redtooth that the man intended to wrench him away from the siren song, but when the stranger took hold of Redtooth's poncho and pulled, he staggered back. Redtooth tried to push on, the stranger pulled him back again.

With this jarring motion, Redtooth's entire demeanor shifted on a dime. His dopey smile turned into a deep, wrathful scowl. Anger flooded over him and Redtooth sought to destroy the obstructer by any means.

An ungodly shriek passed his lips. Something of mindless anger, fear, hatred. It wasn't him though -- but Redtooth was no longer the pilot. He was merely a vessel, a proxy, for whatever had taken hold. His limbs flailed as he sought to strike the man hard with a clenched fist.

Of course, the shambling shell did not take the stranger's size into account. Redtooth was outmatched; simply, outclassed by a wolf nearly twice his size. He could not win, but he did not care. The stranger would hear the call soon, and Redtooth would gladly lead him into the abyss as well.

The thundering of his heart was the loudest thing, louder than even the other man's shrieking, screaming bellows. Then both of them were screaming and snarling together. Wrestling in a desperate fight; one for life and the other for death.

Honrin had the advantage of size and weight and the pure amount of muscle on his frame. He was a farm boy, a builder, a horse-master, a cow-wrangler. He led around thousand pound animals as part of his daily routines. He molded them into horses for battle. Honrin drew back his fist and clocked the poor, unfortunate soul dead in the head, rending him insensate almost.

With numbing fingers he tied the second mint and tallow soaked cloth around the stranger's nose and heaved on him, dragging him away from the edge of the cliff. Away from the lure of the flowers and their siren's song. Salvia was prancing back and forth, tied to the trunk he had left her to. she could sense it too, and the mare screamed and half reared.

He untied her and threw the groaning man across her back, and scrambled on himself, driving sharp heels into her. The mare needed no promoting to flee the fuck away from this death trap. It was a long time before Honrin felt safe enough to pull her to a stop and let the red man down to the ground and rip off the makeshift filter mask.

Shit man, sorry for hitting you. You okay?
