Mercy played her part well, being the silent, disenfranchised youth while Alaric was around. She had to keep up appearances, after all. Thankfully, Veri told him to get lost... in nicer terms than that. Before taking off, though, he came in for a snuggle, and Mercy jerked herself away violently, the splashing of the water adding to the drama of the moment. Don't touch me! she yelped with round, violet eyes staring at him in shock. She wasn't trying to be that much of an ass, but she was terrified that the fleas would transfer from her to Alaric. Not even Mercy wanted him to think she hated him that much, so as a consolation, she lifted a hand out of the water and patted his shoulder awkwardly while looking away from him.

Eventually the puppy took off, none too soon. Yep. Bye, she said in his wake as he bounded away.

Once they were alone again, Veri checked her work and the state of Mercy's back while giving a very heartfelt little speech. The whole thing made Mercy uncomfortable, and she withdrew into herself, crossing her arms and pulling up her knees as a physical sign of how she was feeling inside. It wasn't even that she wanted to feel so awkward when someone spoke from the heart, she just did. What was she even supposed to say to that? Especially since she knew that Veri meant every word of it, but she couldn't quite believe it.

...thanks... was her weak reply. I guess that... means a lot... she leaned forward and propped her chin on the arms crossed over her knees. The silence that followed was awkward, so she filled it in with, Will the treatment gonna be done soon? Sighing at her own lameness, she closed her eyes and was surprised to realize just how much better she felt. She was calm, and the water was soothing, and each touch of Veri's fingers in her nape served to gently scratch the itchy, raw skin. Her tense muscles began to release, one by one.

OOC here

Someone unused to Mercy's demeanor might have been put off by the abrupt exclamation to not touch her. While Alaric's ears drooped a bit and his tail slowed just slightly, he didn't flinch away. Instead he merely backed away a step to give her space and looked up at her curiously. From the pat to his shoulder, however, his tail picked up its tempo once again, and he grinned at her, before his back turned and he bounded away with a final farewell flick of his tail.

In the following few moments, in which Veri gave her best attempt at rekindling the bond that'd truly begun to spark only a few mere minutes ago. This time it seemed to only serve in making the younger female draw into herself uncomfortably. The next awkward words past Mercy's lips were those of a quiet, stilted thanks. The strings of her mother's heart tugged at the uncertainty veiled in those words, and she so desperately wanted to fold the child before her into the protection of her arms.

But she'd be shunned if the healer tried that right now.

So, when her daughter filled the silence with a question about the treatment and how much longer it might be, the Valiant hummed softly as her fingers continued to gently rifle through the layers of fur. "Just another few minutes should do it. After that, I'll apply something for the broken skin, and you can go on with your day. But for the next week or two I'll need to repeat this every day. Maybe if I make two applications a day, the two week max can be greatly reduced."

She actually felt a little bad for snapping at Alaric like she did, but by the way he turned and pranced off with his head still high and tail waving like a flag, she knew that he would be fine. She would try to find a way to make it up to him later, without letting anyone know that's what she was doing.

Just a few more minutes. She could do that. Mercy nodded in reply. It suddenly dawned on her that she felt pretty good; the medicine Veri had given her served to relax her, and now the parasites on her were dead so they weren't hopping around and sinking their nasty little teeth in anymore. There was still the sting of the raw flesh, and of the bites they had already made, but here in the water, after the medicine, with Veri playing with her fur, it really didn't bother her as much. She sighed contentedly, letting her shoulders sink a little more, and her eyes half closed.

Every day, she nodded, agreeing. I can do that. She was eager to say it would be okay; she would have agreed if Veri wanted to keep it up for a year! No way did she ever want an infestation to come back this bad ever again. I don't care, we can do it for two weeks, she said. Probably better not to try and rush and risk it, right? She glanced over her shoulder at Veri. The mother probably knew, but the child had no idea that she had just guaranteed the sandy femme two weeks of quality bonding time every day. She gave her a little smile. So what can I do to keep this from happening in the future?

OOC We can probably end it here soon. :P/WC 364

At the mention that this routine shouldn't take much longer, the younger female appeared to perk up slightly, giving a nod of acknowledgement. Then, after relaxing even further into Veri's tender contact, her daughter gave a sigh and another nod, agreeing to the terms of every day treatment.

That she piped up about not caring going the full two weeks, Mercy added a query that it would be best to not rush the procedure. In the seconds before the Nightshade girl turned to look in her direction over one shoulder, Veri's smile could not have been wider. By the time Mercy had shifted, however, the expression had softened to just a soft, motherly quirk of her lips.

"It's always best to take any kind of medical care one step at a time, you're right. Rushing could cause more harm than good. In this case, it would mean a longer treatment period." so many of her patients were eager to get back into the grind of their lives here in Casa. As an experienced warrior herself, not to mention an active horsewoman, she understood the urge to be busy. But still, she appreciated that perhaps at least one individual, her youngest daughter no less, understood the concept of take it easy and don't rush things.

When asked about how to prevent an occurrence like this in the future, Veri blew out a breath of air before pursing her lips slightly to consider. "Well, the easiest way is cleanliness. Whenever you're out in the woods, just remember to take a dip in the stream when you get back, rinse all over thoroughly. I could even acquire some soap if you like. If you want to go the extra mile in avoiding this again, you can always ask me for a quick check once or twice a month."

That being said, the medic motioned for Mercy to late back in the stream as she had earlier while soaking her fur, this would allow Veri to begin gently massaging the concoction free of her daughter's nape, to be swept away with any dead parasites in the flow of the water.

Some soap would be nice, she said a little too quickly when Veri rattled off preventative measures. Real nice.

Mercy thought about her hygiene habits. She didn't think they'd been lacking, but something must have been wrong to get such a big infestation of fleas in her fur. She didn't even know that she had mistakenly returned to an area where they thrived several times. Now she would take a bath in the rivers and pools as often as she could. Do you make soap, Veri? she asked, wondering if she could learn the art for herself in order to keep it in stock.

The pain and anxiety of the moment was all gone. The girl was relaxed, and actually loosened up enough even to talk to the flaxen healer – her adoptive mother. When Veri's hands dug into her fur to begin scraping and washing out the paste she had applied, it no longer hurt... though it still added a measure of relief. And the day moved on as foster-mother and daughter sat in the edge of the stream, partly submerged in the water, talking and getting to know each other.
