autumn innocence

there are dizzy daffodils on the hillside

The ausa vatni ceremony had been an emotional affair for Shiloh, and it had forced her to come to terms with feelings of warmth and pride and love that she wasn’t used to. She realized know that Vinátta was her home such that other places hadn’t been. Dahlia de Mai had been no more than a land for a prissy girl to explore, and the Solbjorg was filled with family but not the important family. She was driven to come here out of love and protectiveness for Saul and her other brothers, though Gideon was lost and Ascher was back in the Valley, safe she thought.

In the Solbjorg she had grandparents, uncles, cousins—but not nieces and nephews, not Saul’s blood to fiercely love, and even not the new faces that she was coming to be interested in. She could see herself, if not staying here forever, at least always returning.

Such thoughts were never too far from her mind these days, even when she busied herself with other things. Today, she was at the stables, crouched in a stall next to a small wooden cart and prodding at its various nails and wheels. While no carpenter for sure, Shiloh at least wanted to make sure there wasn’t too much wear and tear from the journey back from Freetown, and that the whole thing wouldn’t just fall apart if used.

She straightened, sighing and deciding it was good enough; a woodworker might be able to actually make modifications if needed. As she turned to walk throughout the rest of the livery, however, something lipped at her hair. She squeaked and turned, only for a long equine head to shove itself against her chest.

“You’re a big baby, Baldr,” the she-wolf admonished, even as she scratched along the horse’s jaw and giggled lightly at the return nicker. She rubbed her hands up his long muzzle and scratched underneath his forelock before touching one of his black ears. It flicked, and the horse finally stepped back to give her some breathing room, though after she exited the stall she could hear him plod along after her. She didn’t mind, though; he was compliant with any of her commands even if it meant taking him back into his own stall. As first horses went, the mild gelding suited Shiloh perfectly, and she feared she couldn’t deal with a creature with a bolder personality. Even Saul’s stallion Hermes was occasionally frightening to deal with, though his personality was much better than the teratoid brood mare her brother also owned.

Shiloh was considering searching for a treat for the nosy gelding when a loud, distinct braying caused both to straighten and prick their ears. The woman snorted as she recognized the call, and snorted again when Baldr seemed eager to go check it out; he seemed amiable even toward the donkey, and if the donkey was greeting someone it might mean treats, after all! Jogging to catch up, Shiloh followed the medicine hat paint around to the side of the stables where Aniki was stalled.

Baldr made a happy little noise, and Shiloh blinked as she saw the new Sannindi at the stall, two dark and one light bundle in her arms. Her white tail flickered uncertainly behind her until she came closer, reaching out to deter Baldr from trotting too closely as he seemed curious as to the matter of these puppies.

“Hello, Colibri,” Shiloh greeted sweetly. She’d considered referring to the other by title, but Coli would probably get flustered by that or any overt shows of submission that were appropriate in other pack structures, not that Vinátta seemed that formal. “Are you here for the cart?” she asked, ears swiveling forward, and tried not to stare too hard at the newly-baptized puppies lest Coli get protective or something.

Her daughters were noisy in their delight, whining and barking with eagerness to play with their new best friend Aniki. The donkey was nosing them back, patient even when their little claws and teeth tested his fortitude. His nostrils flared as he softly blew air at them, evidently some sort of equine greeting. Fiora sneezed, causing the donkey to move in and lip at her floppy brown ears. Coli stood firm, straining to keep the three puppies secure in her grip as they wriggled about.

It was then she heard a melodic greeting, and she turned in surprise to see the fair-haired Shiloh nearby. She smiled automatically, relieved to have found the Stormbringer sibling without needing to call for her assistance. "Hello, Shiloh! Yes, I was just looking for you. Y... you do you know there's one following you...?" she asked apprehensively, blue eyes wide as she peered over the Hollr's shoulder at Baldr. She was still cautious around the horses, and it only set her at ease to know they were never loose, always boxed up in their stall or safely fenced in the pasture. The pups in her arms did not share her wariness, though, and cheerfully yipped and barked at Shiloh and her painted gelding. Three little tails were wagging furiously, showcasing their dog heritage.

"I was going to let Aniki out, unless that one won't like him? Here, um - can you hold the girls for a moment? I don't want them getting underfoot with the big animals," she explained, trying to juggle the three pups in her arms and work the latch on the stall. Amazing, how mere weeks earlier they had been small enough to hold in the palm of her hand, blind and helpless. Now they were almost impossible to hold all at once, determined to run around on their own. Coli's ears dropped back apologetically, knowing how flustered she must seem. It was only marginally better than when she and Shiloh first met, and Coli had struggled to weed the garden around her heavily pregnant belly. At least Shiloh always seemed happy to help, just like her brother Saul.

Shiloh grinned privately as she watched how the donkey interacted with the puppies, not used to seeing such a large herbivore treat the little ones so gently. She always got a bit nervous around the animals herself, even if she wouldn’t admit it; she thought a puppy might get easily trampled or bitten. The donkey was kind to them, however, and Colibri didn’t seem to have any problems (besides keeping all three girls in her arms).

The brown she-wolf said that she’d been looking for her, and the Dawnbringer nodded before laughing quietly as she pointed out the paint gelding. “Yeah, this is Baldr,” she introduced, reaching back to scratch under the horse’s jaw affectionately. “I got him from Freetown with everything else.” She had figured it was time for her to get a riding horse, especially if she wanted to travel long distances to the southern packs in the territories she’d explored as a child. She hoped other Vináttans got use out of him when she couldn’t be around, however, knowing how fat he’d get with no exercise and all treats.

Shiloh made soft cooing noises at the puppies as she stepped closer, greeting them softly by their names before meeting Colibri’s eyes and nodding. “Baldr gets along with everyone,” she reassured her with a quirk of her mouth. “But yeah, I don’t know if I’d trust him not to get overly excited with the young ones running about. I’ll take them.”

She stepped closer to the new subleader, reaching out to take the girls in her arms and greet them with nuzzles and little nose kisses. “How are they?” she asked Coli warmly, holding the pups closely and hoping that being held by a new person would take the edge off of some of their excitement and urges to run around under the equines’ hooves.

Coli watched cautiously as Baldr was introduced, noting the familiar ease Shiloh displayed in touching him. If he was from Freetown, he had not been a part of the stables long, but she still bonded so easily with the gelding... She must have the same knack with horses as her brother Saul. It was something the Sannindi did not share, but she at least could trust the beasts more than she used to thanks to Niernan, and before him, Alder. Coli perked up as Shiloh approached the woolly pups in her arms, smiling as they responded happily to the cooing with their own nonsense sounds. They could never get enough attention.

Coli knew she might not be as protective as some mothers seemed to be. It didn't bother her when her packmates wanted to play with or handle the girls, and she usually encouraged it so her daughters would be well-acquainted with their Vináttan family. There was no hesitation for her as she passed the warm furry bodies over to Shiloh, flashing a quick smile of relief as the lovely woman greeted them with affectionate nuzzles. It was easy to trust Shiloh, especially when she held such obvious fondness for children. Farina yipped in her excitement, swatting a dark paw at Shiloh's honey-blond mane. Her calmer sisters were content to nestle into the new embrace, sniffing with great interest at all the unfamiliar scents enveloping them. Auntie Shi had been around them before at the house, but they were only just beginning to register faces and distinguish between family members. Soon they might actually recognize her, and learn her name.

Coli turned and unlatched the stall, swinging the gate open for the donkey. Aniki flicked his long ears, placidly emerging to approach Baldr. Coli moved carefully out of the way, looking back to Shiloh as the hoofed animals interacted. "Oh, they're doing well -- energetic and wild, as you can see. Fari and Flor seem to be in competition for who can cause the most trouble," she said wryly. They required all of her time and attention, and without the help of Lilin and Saul, she would have already fallen apart trying to keep track of the pups. That was part of the hope she had for the donkey cart, a way to bring her daughters around town without letting them run amok. "If we start walking, Aniki will follow us. I hope this goes well, I really don't know anything about cart training or teaching things to animals..." It would be the first time she had attempted to use tack or harness with the donkey, since he was so easygoing he did not even need a halter. She waited expectantly for Shiloh to lead the way.

Shiloh didn’t really consider herself a horsewoman, but that was the beauty of the gelding and his calm, easygoing nature. She still wondered if it might be easier to bond with something smaller, like the donkey, but decided that Aniki would probably be too stubborn despite his gentle nature with the girls, if the stereotypes about the beasts of burden held any grain of truth.

She pushed the thought aside as she balanced the children in her arms, glad to give them affection. While she had never seriously thought of becoming a mother, she did have the instincts that let her treat them so gently. She grinned and tossed her mane slightly as the darker shepherd mix swatted at her, reaching down to bop her paw with her nose. Slender white fingers meanwhile scratched gently into soft puppy fur, and she wondered how the children would fare when the winter came. She supposed there’d be no lack of family to keep them warm even when their thicker adult coats hadn’t grown in.

Colibri let out the donkey, and Baldr approached him somewhat submissively, sniffing and deciding—as quickly as always—that this was a friend. Meanwhile, the mother answered her question about the children, and Shiloh tittered softly. They do seem like a handful, however fun and adorable, she cooed. If you ever need me to babysit them or something, just let me know. I’d imagine your new rank will leave you busy. She acknowledged the promotion with mischief in her blue eyes.

The Sannindi explained that Aniki would follow if they walked, and Shiloh nodded. Come on, Baldr, she said to get the gelding’s attention, and he brought his head back up. She flashed Coli a smile then began to meander in the direction of the cart, her progress slowed slightly as she tried to carry the three puppies, before she at last resigned herself to asking the mother if she could take one of them.

I’ll admit I don’t know much about it, either, the she-wolf confessed as they reached the wooden cart. She looked over the thing appraisingly, deciding that all her fine-tuning had yielded good results (not that she’d needed to do much), and grinned. Though Baldr had a good time of pulling it; I think he was already trained by a previous owner. Maybe we’ll catch a lucky break and Aniki will already have some experience with it?

closing this thread since I was absent for so long, derp. Poke me if you want a fresh one though! ;) | WC: 395

"Thank you, I might take you up on that," she accepted with a shy smile, ears falling back meekly. It was strange to think of herself as being a higher rank than everyone other than Saul and Lilin -- uncomfortable, even, and she hoped they were not expecting her to bark orders or assert herself much. She saw it as a chance to merely make things easier for the Virding couple by handling smaller issues they shouldn't be bothered with. Having a babysitter would help them all out, especially since Shiloh had a way with the Aeska. Her charisma charmed packmates of all ages.

Shiloh fell back as she struggled to balance the three fluffy children, and Coli grinned, knowing all too well how hard it was to carry them at once. She reached out and took Farina back, the largest pup as well as the most mischievous, and huffed softly as the black wolfdog tried to nip at her fingers and be let down. They halted once the cart came into view, and Coli studied it with interest, listening as Shiloh went on to explain. "Oh, that's good; I guess if Aniki won't do it, Baldr could show him how. Or something. Do horses talk like that?" She shrugged, baffled by the ways of equines. Very slowly she was getting accustomed to the idea of raising them and being around them, but it was still so foreign. She felt ignorant around those like Niernan and Saul who seemed to know so much about everything. The cart was a simple enough affair, but she still would need help getting it to work.

It was fortunate that Aniki was a patient beast, trusting and docile thanks to whomever had trained him earlier in life. They didn't need Baldr after all as he accepted the harness readily, and did not balk at the cart, merely turning his head curiously to sniff at the puppies gingerly placed in the back. Coli still did not trust the creature enough to actually ride in the cart, though, so for the remainder of their time together, she grasped the harness and led him on foot, walking the donkey in gentle circles out on the grass while she conversed with Shiloh. Her daughters loved the hay ride, barking and falling over themselves with glee as they watched the autumn scenery go by.
