Helena Troy Lykoi

Several days after ascension | Early morning

In the midst of chaos she managed to find a quiet time. It had rained again in the night giving rise to a sparkling dew that covered sprouting plants. It was all very domestic as the red woman engaged in work that could be considered below her station. She weeded at the garden and trimmed back some overzealous plants, snipping the greens that she would need from some.

It was an ever rare moment that she could be alone and relaxed and the morning's shining sun warmed her pelt enough that she did not have a need for the red furred cloak. Her free moment outside was not allowed for long, she bustled back inside her tower with the basket of produce and set to work, chopping and mixing, frowning when something didn't go quiet as expected.

A multi-tasker at heart, in times when she did not need to watch over her creations she returned to her seat at the table and continued to compose her letter in precise, neat rows of writing, legible only to those who could read french.

Practicing French! Keeping the spoken French in brackets for now so you don’t have to go hover crazy xD

Kamari moved along at a clipped pace, eager as ever to make it to her destination that would keep her busy for a good portion of the first half of the day. She had caught a few plump pheasants for the lesson she was to have with the doggish woman. The Kaiser had learned from her past mistake that she was better suited in providing fresh meat than making heads or tails of vegetables, fruits, or herbs. She just didn’t have the knowledge or eye for what was the best to chose from, only that it looked, felt, and smelt fine enough for her novice tongue.

She had taken care to remove the plumage from the two birds, and had washed their naked skins in a cool stream along the way to the Arbiter’s home in the far, western side of the Ruins. It was quite a jaunt to go from Millstone to the western watchtower, however, it was well worth it to Kamari. The Kingdom was filled with Luperci that were fluent in foreign tongues, though, only a handful of those spoke the ones Kamari knew, and even less that the teenager interacted with often.

Helena had been one such individual. She had been kind to her from a young age, and, it was this that had made the Sapienza open up a bit more to the Conserje. She spoke French fluently, Kamari had come to learn, and could even write in it. To someone who aspired to collect the secrets of others, Kamari would have been a fool to pass up the opportunity to practice accurately writing in one of the languages she knew.

Multiple languages meant more ways to hide things within other’s earshot. And knowing how to write them too meant narrowing the crowd that could decipher whatever message was passed along.

When she came upon the familiar sight of the western tower, Kamari’s pace slowed until she finally paused before the door. She knocked politely upon it, shuffling the basket that held the two pheasants she had cleaned and plucked before arriving for her lesson that morning. “Arbiter Helena?” She called out, It’s Kamari. Though they were of the same rank, the Kaiser still found it hard to simply refer to the woman by her first name. She was older, and, for a long time, had been leagues above the young lowborn. Her respect in that regard had been one of the reasons she had yet to break the habit.

Helena Troy Lykoi

Italics denote french

Some things were regular as clockwork even amidst Salsolan life's recent upheaval and the disorder that swiftly followed. She listened for the patter of feet and a singing, calling voice that she expected. She stretched her figurative arms and encompassed what and whoever allowed themselves to be snared. With some she was strong and shook her spice over their influences whilst others took a softer touch, of soothing balms and calm voices.

The girl (no longer a child, she reminded herself) had been coming often with gifts and helpfulness. Maybe some would see it as Helena extending graciousness or taking pity on the low-born female. None would guess at the truth of it, and know the fullness that a girl born of slave parents would rise to become one of Salsola's most influential and powerful figures.

Helena saw her own story unfolding again in Kamari and was eager to push it along, giving the Kaiser a ledge to grasp and pull herself up.

She opened the door for the younger female, gifting her with the traditional whiskery kiss of Salsola.

"Welcome again, Henchman Kamari. What have you for me today?" The basket bound gift was peered at with a contained eagerness.

She drew the Henchman into her kitchen with a wave of her elegant hand, ever since her betrothal to Ondine's son, Kamari had become more subdued from Helena's experiences with her, she was eager to see the return of her enthusiasm and realize just what an opportunity she had set before her.

It didn’t take long for the French woman to answer the door, and when she opened it, Kamari offered her a small, friendly smile. A traditional Salsolan greeting—one that the Kaiser stood still for—was given before their meeting was moved into the Conserje’s abode. “Thank you, Miss Helena.” The jackal hybrid made her way over to a table and set down her basket, pulling away the cloth she had used to keep her washed meat clean of dirt and debris and pestering flies. “Pheasants from the apple orchard,” she replied, “The deer were skittish this morning, and the only rabbits I found were too young and lean to make a proper meal out of.”

She pulled up the cloth upon which the defeathered bodies laid upon, retrieving a familiar journal that she had been using for her French writing. With it in hand, she stepped aside to let the Arbiter inspect the birds while Kamari flipped to the page that she wanted in her book. “I wrote another entry like you suggested. Hopefully, it’s a little better this time,” she said, cracking a grin up at the taller woman.

The page was written completely in their shared tongue, a multi-paragraphed summary regarding a day in the life of her feline, Agate. There were a few crossed out words where she had used the wrong word or had misspelled another, but, other than that, it was a relatively clean-looking entry, far better than her firsts attempts at writing in French. Whether what she had written was correct or not though, she would learn once the Arbiter gave it a look over.

Kamari’s eyes roved over the kitchen area, “Where do you want to start today, Arbiter?” Would she help with the cooking? Or would she be given another writing assignment while scribing Helena’s recipe for their dish that morning?
