The recent events had cast a veil of uncertainty over the aging warrior’s path, twisting the circumstances contemplated in her schemes until these were no longer viable as a means toward success. The golden tigress had been a formidable woman who valued strength and power in all its shapes. She had rewarded those who proved worthy through hard work and tangible accomplishments, but the former Hierophant…

From what Kaeli had seen and heard Elphaba was a creature of cult and schemes, an opportunistic being that forget alliances and broke them on a daily basis, and rewarded only those who served her personal ends. She couldn’t bring herself to bend for one such as the she-Revilis, she had to respect her for that and respect had to be earned.

Amongst thistle and rocks she walked in proud defiance. She would attend her self-imposed duties despite the increasing pressure of younger individuals trying to compete for the same job. She may not be as vivacious as the juniors but experience was a more reliable weapon than natural youth. She could teach the new generation the arts of war and fight by their side for a couple years more. Of course she needed willing students for this purpose and hence why she had chosen to visit the ruins that day.

Acidic eyes searched through the residences, hoping for a sign of activity that may lead her in the right direction. Her sour mood had started to give out at last. Perhaps that day would prove to be a fruitful one, one from many to come.

Calla and Chester left with the caravan and Helena was there to see them away with the other Salsolans. Riding besides them on Nani with Phobos following behind until they had passed beyond the borders and disappeared into the wild world beyond. The walk back was slow and all the much quieter for chattering Chester's absence.

The non-slave man tried his best to fill in the silence with talk of his own. Phobos had become a step more bold since his abrupt release to freedom. He would sometimes speak with a freer mind and give his thoughts and opinions without prompting, and through long association she paid attention to his words. Musing silently or commenting altruistically.

The talk at length switched over to the new Boss and the sudden shift in allegiances. Helena was commenting to the big, black male that she ought to make a trip herself to find new gems for the Boss to trade as they walked close to a lesser ranked Salsolan that Helena barely paid any attention too, other than a nodded greeting.

The sound of distant chattering caught her attention. From what she could make out of the conversation before the pair came into view she realized they were coming back from watching the caravan off. Displeasure tugged her lips into a sneer at the thought of the former Queen’s readily departure. Officially the Kingdom was at the mercy of a witch’s whims now that the tigress had chosen to take her influence away from the heart of the Kingdom.

Curiosity turned into boldness as casual greetings were exchanged. Her eyes traveled up to the mounted woman’s mismatched gaze. ”Pardon me but is it true that the tigress has left the territory with the caravan?” Disbelief laced her words, softened only by the courtesy she wielded like a protective shield. Toxic orbs shifted toward the woman’s darker companion, a brute of a man she knew had been a slave until the recent events. Was he grateful for his newly granted freedom? Would he adapt and become an asset to Salsola or would he come to be disgrace to his former owners and of course the Queen?

”It is a shame she won’t be around to mentor our young Boss.” Perhaps she should have waited longer to better asses the Arbiter’s loyalties, but at that point her disapproval for the recent changes had become a knot in her throat she was eager to rid herself of. Perhaps she sought assurance by learning her views were shared, or she needed to be encouraged into acceptance by a different point of view. Whatever fueled her recklessness she had started to press the matter too deep with only a few sentences, and the repercussions would surely be severe.

Their planning was interrupted and that was a thing that instantly turned her mood to sourness, she had too many important things to be wasting her time with simple family members. She had bigger things to think about. Still, it wouldn't do to have the general masses believe their superiors were completely uncaring to their problems, so she schooled her expression to a neutral vague interest.

"It ess true, zhe Regent, she 'as important business outside of Salsola's grasp." Something in the woman's tone, thought it was perfectly polite, made the insides of her prickle. Lykoi eyes washed over the much older woman and Helena saw the waste there, that this one had sat as only a Family member for such a long time and not evidenced the ambition to be something more.

The things of her sharpened though, it was blasphemous to imply that Elphaba would be a less than capable leader. The coldness echoed out, spreading to all the parts of her and sharpening her eyes to chips of ice,

"Zhe Boss 'as no need for mentoring. She was born to be a leader, a beacon of salsola." Kaeli could still save herself maybe, by fervently backtracking, by apologizing and supplicating herself. Helena seemed to grow in stature, a ready and willing defense to the young Queen's grace and title.

Kaeli had once walked away from a pack after an unprepared female had risen to power. Abandoning her work and venturing into the wilderness had been easy when she possessed the advantages of youth and had the certainty of a lifetime to build anew. This time she had neither, nor strength or time to take on a new adventure. Salsola was now her home and would be until the day the ravens made a feast of her rotting flesh.

This didn’t mean she would remain idle while the future of the Kingdom became uncertain in the hands of a bloody witch.

The Arbiter’s amiable façade cracked and fell apart to reveal the scorn underneath. It appeared the woman had placed her loyalties with the witch Queen. Kaeli should have swallowed her pride then to offer a timely apology. Retreating would have been the smart choice but also a coward’s move.

”Wasn’t the Pentiti also born to rule in his time?” That remark only would be the trigger of the humiliation that would befall her from the hand of the red she-dog. After so many years Kaeli hadn’t managed to surpass the arrogance that corrupted her when presented with a challenge. In other circumstances she would have easily done with the Arbiter and perhaps her dog guard too, but within the Kingdom one required more than physical strength to stay afloat and she was about to be reminded that.

The flare of her nostrils was a delicate but contemptuous thing that spoke volumes without the need or desire for words. There was a low growl from behind her, the black dogs muzzle wrinkling to show pearly white teeth, every one of them sharp for this is what he knew his mistress would desire, despite his freed-man's status. The Arbiter held up her hand, the back of it facing him and the unholy din died as it had arrived, curling into the air.

There were others, that surrounded them for this way was filled with the Salsolans that had seen away their friends and relatives to the trip and trade route. The absence of Calla, of her gentle boy Chester was enough to remove from the French-woman any semblance of pliancy or mercy.

A bracing step forwards was all she took, and a hand outstretched not with speed or the strength to harm but was light as falling feathers. She tapped the older woman on the cheek, a thing of softness and yet would ring with the staining, stinging pain of humiliation and disgrace.

Gasps and twitters erupted from the gathered observers and their stares bore inwards like savage diamond-tipped drills, tearing away anything that might have been left to stand in the face of abasement.

Her tones were cold and cruel, charged to mock the green eyes snake,

"You embarrass us all with your slander. I 'ope, for your own sake, you will come to regret your dishonorable words."

Chill were the eyes that wasted their efforts to look over this person before her and she archly stepped around Kaeli Blacksun with the air of one avoiding a pile of shit on the ground.

"Come, mon cher.." She called to Phobos, who gamely followed with an evil eyed glare at the woman, "Let us leave zhis wretched creature to 'er own devices."

She strode away with Phobos at her heels, not even bothering to look back, without a single care in the world.
