When light rode high, and the dew was gone

OOC: Sugar Glass Caverns. Foredated to late May/early June if that’s okay, just so the puppies can walk around a little bit more.

IC:

Flowers drifted down in the soft gold light of dawn, falling gently into the cutouts where trickles of water poured. One drifted past a puppy’s wiggling nose, and the curious child plodded after it. Predictably, he investigated it with his mouth first.

Dreyma rolled her eyes. She could tell which kid took most after Skoll.

And speak of the devil: the big golden wolfdog jogged down into the grassy valley, greeting the puppies with happy woofs and whimpers. They ran toward him, sometimes stumbling but looking like proper puppies now rather than the furry potatoes they had been. Rearing up on hind legs, they whimpered and licked at their father’s muzzle, and he dropped his head to deliver a nice bounty of slimy food.

The black she-wolf flicked her tail as she joined them, lifting her brows at her once-beau and smiling. “Where’s mine?”

Skoll blinked at her, caught off-guard, and she laughed at him. He really shouldn’t have been so surprised at her quips – though Drey would be the first to admit she’d tried to hold him at arm’s length during her pregnancy and the first couple weeks of the pups’ lives. It was easier that way; she needed distance before friendship could mend.

“Hold on, hold on,” the male recovered, and began to make all sorts of nasty gagging sounds until Drey shoved him with a paw.

He laughed and plopped down, rolling on the soft, warm moss and blinking happily up into the sunlight. Content, he shut his eyes and listened to the pups eat, until the energized fluffballs began to clamber over him. Oberyn chomped on his ankle; Issola slid onto his stomach. He groaned at their battery.

“I know what this is now,” Skoll told Dreyma. “An elaborate, months-long assassination plot. Don’t deny it, nana.”

In hindsight, he deserved a second smack to the head.

Mother watched over her from the night sky, and now father joined her.

She reflected on this in the days following the revelation from her eldest sister's mouth, that their father – alone in the absence of his golden wife – was gone. There were no tears for Silvano Sadira, who she had loved desperately as young girls so often do their parents, but who she struggled to approach in the wake of the Court's hurtful winter and the changes that came with it. It made her heart ache to know that she was glad for him, that she was happy he was gone to somewhere better; shouldn't she wish he still walked the pack's lands with her and her siblings? Since the death of Shiloh, it had weighed heavily on her that all those things she loved so dearly would be taken from her: Madilyn Joyce, her mother, and now her father. She wondered if dearest uncle Skoll would be next.

She would ache for Galilee then, she was certain.

With her mind lost in the grim clouds of mourning, she sought to escape. It seemed wrong to visit the sea that had made their King uncomfortable during her youth – he hadn't enjoyed it the way that she had, and so she would find other sources of comfort. Her feet carried her across growing summer grasses, through patches of wildflowers, and through the shadows of great trees that offered their consoling shade to the shadow-made female. This was her second summer. The shift of seasons was familiar now, growing more and more heavy as she realized her mortality. How many more summers would she have?

There was no answer for this. In fact, when she racked her brain for the number, it was lost to recognition. Recognition of a scent, recognition of sounds; she had come close to the pretty caverns that flooded at times, and found the smell of her uncle and his new brood on the air. They and her sister, the sister she had never been close to. Dreyma had been Shiloh's daughter, not Silvano's, and though Serena wished she could reach out and connect with the other female, she found it hard enough to do with those she grew up with.

Still, it was better late than never, and a distraction would serve beneficial.

When she found them, the golden body of Skoll – beautiful Skoll, Skoll of the Sunshine, uncle Skoll who had been so important to her father – was being assaulted by small frames of fluff and puppyhood. The next generation was a charming one, her nieces and nephews having fascinated her in their baby months, and these two were no different. She saw them less; they weren't Abigail's children, and it would be rude to simply barge in to visit when she had such an awkward disconnect with the sister she wasn't sure she would ever truly know.

Who will serve as Senechal if the babies eat you? she wondered aloud, keeping a distance that was polite, Unless that's the cause of Dreyma's assassination ploy. Dreyma, Senechal of the Court. He had been teasing her when Serena arrived and she, oblivious to moments of privacy, tried to make a light-hearted quip. She had never been good at those things. She worried now that she was no better.

A voice mused about the fate of his role, and Skoll lifted his head—albeit at a painful angle thanks to one Oberyn clamped on his ear. He grimaced, but shook the puppy free and side-eyed Dreyma with a level of grimness that was theatrical.

The dark she-wolf—far more silvered than her slate-colored sister—looked caught off-guard by the girl's approach, but she recovered with a forced smile that grew more genuine by the word. "My master plan revealed. Oh, but don't you think I would make a better Senechal, dear sister? We don't need a hot-head in charge."

Skoll snorted. "You are just as much a hot-head as I am—"

"I am a lady."

He stuck his tongue out and blew a raspberry at that, and the dark between Dreyma's brows pinched. She reached out with a grey paw and smacked him on the snout again, and he whined at Serena. "See?" he appealed, while the puppies stumbled out of the way of their parents' tussling and gawked shyly at the pretty stranger. Noting this, Skoll smiled and nudged Issola's pale rump toward the girl. "Go see your aunt! C'mere, Serena, it's okay."
