Life as a loner was no stranger to a wolf like Auspicium. He had lived through the hardships of a solitary life before, with the very same heartache of leaving family behind, and with the markings of time and live ingrained in every single aspect of his appearance. The wolf's light-blue eyes were tired, melancholic, his skin and silvery fur were sticking close to his bones, letting his ribcage exposed to the world. His pelt was mangled in mud and dry blood, he took very little care of himself, only worried about what his next meal would be. Yet he still stood, somehow swearing to himself that he was as healthy as he could get, walking peacefully through the vast forest he had explored a few times before, carrying a stolen necklace between his teeth.

Though he did lack the company of other canines, he at least counted with the help of his two loyal corvids: Heister and Serpent. They followed his master closely, cutting the blue sky air with their onyx wings for every few paces the secui wolf took, staying not too close from each other and landing with precision atop the forest trees. They were healthier than Auspicium, as they needed fewer resources than him to survive, and because the wolf always fed them before feeding himself. The pair carefully examined every inch of the forest floor as they followed their master, permanently on the look for anything that would please and ensure the survival of themselves and their master.

The sun's mane filtered through the leaves, which meant they still had time. Auspicium's self-imposed task of the day was to hide the shiny necklace and its even shinier pendant before the nighttime's pelt covered the sky above him. He needed to find a great tree to hide the small loot beneath its strong roots so that he could come back the next day to retrieve it, and later trade it for something to eat. He felt exhausted, he had been walking almost all day, he needed to make sure the canine he stole the necklace from was nowhere to be seen, and he needed to make sure he or she wouldn't find the hiding spot to steal it back. All this to ensure his next meal.

He didn't feel bad for stealing, but he used to, somewhat. Back in Anathema, he would only steal if it benefitted his pack, that was his only rule. Now, he would only steal if the object he was stealing would make a good trade. But now wasn't time to think about the ethics or morals behind stealing (if there were any), now wasn't time to think at all, he had to focus on keeping the stolen necklace away from its previous owner.

Slumping on Silex’s neck, he yawned, eyes clenching closed and sleep threatened to take him over right there in the saddle. Taking a few days to himself, he’d managed to check back in with Ardoise and the university, which appeared to have been doing particularly well of late – a fact that pleased him immensely, but also annoyed him. Ardoise’s abandonment was still a rather touchy subject at the end of the day and no matter how much time passed, the fact it hurt and annoyed him was not likely going to change.

A sudden shift to Silex’s gait had him bolting upright in the saddle, his sole erect ear spinning backwards and forwards, chest heaving as he breathed in deep, tasting the scents upon his tongue as much as he began to decipher them with his nose – something had unsettled his mare, although what was hard to pinpoint in his exhausted state of mind.

Head tilting to the side, serpentine eyes narrowed before finally he caught that little bit of something – a stranger’s scent, close by if he was reading it correctly. Frowning now, he collected the reigns that he’d allowed slack, trusting Silex to stick the path, head spinning this way and that as he sought out the owner, that is, if the owner was going to reveal themselves.

It wasn't long until the pair of corvids warned him about the stranger and his horse, even long before Auspicium heard the beast's steps. Panic overtook the wolf's body, thinking the owner of the necklace was catching up to him, looking for revenge. He leaped into the nearby bacciferous bushes, it's twigs, leaves, and berries brushing against his tangled fur and threatening to leave more scratches on the wolf. He quickly dug a hole in the ground and dropped the necklace, his paws were shaking as the secui covered the small hole with dirt.

Auspicium could feel his heart pounding as if it was trying to escape from his cloudy chest, he felt his ears roaring and his mind started rushing as he worried about what would happen next. In minutes of panic he started regretting his actions as a thief, he felt ashamed he didn't have the hunting skills he and any other canine were supposed to have, he felt ashamed he had to take what wasn't his to put food in his and his corvids' mouths. The latter landed near him after he hid the necklace, seemingly unnerved by their master's nervous state. He looked through the leaves as he waited for the danger to be over, hoping the scent of the bushes would distract whoever was out there looking for him.

Light-blue eyes soon caught the hybrid's mare, which seemed to be agitated by Auspicium's presence. The wolf then focused his sight on the mare's owner, a peculiar hybrid, who to his relief, didn't look like the canine he had stolen the necklace from. Before letting out a sigh of relief, he tensed again as he realized the hybrid was looking around for him, which made him immediately assume the hybrid was looking for him on behalf of his victim. Not knowing what to do he simply stood frozen, though his pair of corvids did come close to the mare to investigate the hybrid themselves.
