It wasn't bittersweet, it was just bitter. A message from the gods had clearly communicated to her that she needed to leave the coven, that she was not fulfilling her intended purpose in life. While pagans of her caliber did not believe in predestination or fate, she did believe in guidance from the spirits. The spirits saw something in her current path that was not desirable, and they were loud and clear about it. Maelyx heeded that warning, and a few nights before, she and Jaketta left a sparse note in her tent and stole off into the night.

She knew where she was going, it had come to her in a meditation. There was a congregation of witches in another pack, a place that was stricter with ruthless guidelines, but ultimately a rich family structure. It was a place she had heard of some time ago, and now all evidence was pointing to Salsola. But first, she wanted to stop by the former Anathema lands to see what might have been left unpillaged from Kentaro's mercenary army.

It was so strange to pass the former boundaries of Anathema and be met by nothing. Even the old scent of the place had been spirited away by the winds. Already much of her sight was returning, the sight that had been robbed from her by the trauma she had endured under Khael's ruthless thumb. It got better the father she traveled from the Circle; this was the deciding factor of why she decided to leave. Her peripheral vision was merely bare shadows and blackness, but she could make out shapes and color through the pinpoints directly ahead. Her daughter, Jaketta, helped a lot with navigation, but Maelyx branched out on her own more and more. Maybe her sight wouldn't come back entirely... but there was hope.

The cottage stood before them, like the quiet bones of a long-deceased family member. There was a somber feeling to the air as the woman and her small daughter headed to the place, once known as Cottage Mavi. She needed to see if there were any of her old things here that were worth saving... especially something decent to wear when she arrived at the borders of Salsola.

Inca had decided to head back to where Anathema once stood, on the off chance he might run into someone that he knew. It was still unnerving that his home had vanished so easily, his family scattered. A part of him knew that they might have died in whatever had happened to his pack, but the hybrid stubbornly refused to ever consider that possibility for long. Where they might have gone though, was something that he'd never been able to guess at.

He'd had no destination in particular, the man gradually going from landmark to landmark, looking for signs that someone might have returned. He saw signs of scavengers, things missing that he'd seen during his last look through. Inca's little tour was near an end however, the hybrd's self-imposed rest about to give way to heading back the way he'd come from. While he couldn't recall who had owned the cottage, if anyone had, it had been a comfortable enough place for him to sprawl out for a while.

An exaggerated stretch was paired with the hybrid's maw opening wide, his vision a bit blurry as a result. His steps had been cautious earlier in the day, the man competent enough to not make much noise in a place he no longer considered 'safe', but that had been earlier in the day. That lapse coming as an eye opening surprise when he started out of the cottage in the middle of another yawn, only to have two blurry shapes gradually resolve into something he could make sense of.

Before Inca could register who they were, the man's hand shot to the bone knife strapped to his thigh, ready to fight if he needed to. Surprise just as gradually turning to something resembling recognition, the bare man's brows furrowing as though thinking. ”I know you? Don't I?” Inca asked, voice clearly uncertain, before his eyes widened a second time. Inca wasn't sure who the younger one was, but he could vividly remember running into the older one when he was much younger.

The place was eerily empty. No more raven alarm system at the border, no more members meandering about. It was just a warzone trying to recuperate from the ravaging it had sustained a few months back. Mother Nature was a resilient thing, and already much of the flora had begun to return to the areas that had been singed by the fires of war. Still, stepping into this land was like stepping through a ghost. Chilling.

She sensed her daughter's unease and reached out a hand to drape over her shoulder when the sound of another broke the unsettling silence. A moment earlier she thought such an interruption would be welcome but now, knowing a stranger was upon them, she bristled, hackles raised, and whipped around. Jaketta did so, too, but it was Maelyx who stood a step ahead, protecting the younger girl. Her azure eyes narrowed – while it looked like she was just being threatening, she was actually trying to focus. She had to peer at Inca from an angle to see his face properly, but after a moment she realized she did know the boy... man.

The last time she had seen him he was just a boy and neither of them had been through the trials of life yet. Well, at least not this many. In her mind's eye she saw the red fabric of her dress, her knees poking up, and his nose unceremoniously buried where the sun don't shine. He'd been a clumsy boy and they had fallen in the most awkward of positions. It brought a smile to her face.

But she could not let her guard down yet. She had not seen him in some time, and there was no knowing what he had been up to since the fall of Anathema. He might not be a friend anymore. The last time someone had surprised the witch and her daughter, the witch had spent weeks buried underground, tortured. She would not let her guard down so easily this time.

Still, her stance slackened some, not wanting to provoke a fight where there was none.

Yes, she answered coolly. The young boy rushing through the caverns, Inca. She let that smile come back. I did not expect to see any old Anathemans here. Have you been here the whole time?

Recognition softened the hybrid's posture, Inca not thinking that someone from his former pack would harm him, still naive enough to overlook the possibility that it had been pack mates that caused the end of Anathema. A grin took the place of his uncertain expression, the man pleased that she'd remembered him, even if those memories didn't paint him in the best of lights.

”Yep, Nyx and Liir's son. You're... Mal, Malyx? Maelyx.” Inca answered back with a warmer tone than she'd offered him, uncertainty returning when he actually had to recall the woman's name. He got it right in the end, after a bit of mangling, but paused to think before answering the question that had been asked of him. ”You're the first I've seen since I left for a while. I don't really live here though.”.

A moment's reflection was enough for Inca to realize that he hadn't really explained anything, or asked what he wanted to ask, but was quick to correct that. ”I wasn't here. Did the pack disband? Where did everyone go?” Inca's voice grew hesitant when he asked about where everyone had gone, and was uncertain if he wanted to really know the answer.

Inca had liked to think sometimes that the pack had just disbanded, that his sister, father, and mother were just somewhere else in the region. Yet he'd seen enough upon his return to guess something less than peaceful had transpired in the area, even if he didn't know what that something was. Past his optimism was only a selfish hope that no one he'd really known and cared about had been hurt.

The witch was pleased to have remembered the boy's name, even more pleased that her sight had returned enough to be able to see a visage to even recognize. He remembered her, too, but how could he not having been so young and hormone-riddled, and she in that slinky red dress? Somewhere in the back of her mind a sliver of consciousness mourned for that dress. Perhaps it was still within the cottage that was only a few yards from them now, having somehow not been pilfered by the marauders...

But while a vestige of her worried about fashion, the rest of her gave Inca all her attention, so she was alert when the boy... no, young man... asked a heartbreaking question. Maelyx's expression fell, shocked that he did not know what happened to his people. Large jackal ears tipped back and she brought a hand up, first to her own mouth in a gesture of surprise, and then she reached out and placed it lightly on his shoulder for comfort. Jaketta stood blurted something about how could he not know – she did not intend meanness but it came out that way all the same – and Maelyx waved her to hush.

Oh, Inca, she said, her spine straight. For a moment she was suddenly the Priestess again, the Witch of Anathema, a spiritual leader set to calm all the raucous souls of the living. No, no. The people of Anathema would never have abandoned you like that. If the pack survived, we surely would have sent scouts out for you by now. How painful it must have been to think he had just been left behind. Come, she gestured, waving him to follow at her side, with Jaketta falling in behind them. She led both young ones to the cottage, talking to Inca as they went. After all, who knew if this place was safe anymore? It may not be wise to stand there in the open. As you have gathered, Anathema is no more. Kentaro the Mad returned to conquer the pack, take it for himself. He brought an army of mercenaries and they ravaged the land. It was all an attack of opportunity, had our guard not been down surely his people would not have been successful, she opened the cottage door and coasted in. The smell of mothballs and rats nests assaulted the senses, birds nested in the rafters, the place was just a skeleton of the warm family home it had once been. Still, as though she had never left it, Maelyx padded over to the cooking fireplace – the stones of which had long ago run cold – and peered into the toppled cauldron. Some kind of muck festered there. It was not as though he was even successful. It is my suspicion that he wanted to take over the pack, but he did not. He was executed. Unfortunately, there was too much damage done to our people too quickly. Most of us had to scatter. There were not enough left behind for Anathema to be a defensible land. Scattered to the winds, our pack ceased to be.

Even myself, River, Malefica, Avinalora, Lux, and our children left willingly. We had to get someplace safe before it was too late – the children's lives were at stake, and most of us were too injured to fight anymore, her story drew to a close, the space feeling hollow without her voice there to fill it.

She had something more to tell him, something about his mother, Nyx, but she stood there peering at him with jewel-like blue eyes, letting it all sink in before she continued on.

The question had been a round about thing, Inca not really coming right out and asking if everyone was okay, but that had been what he wanted to know. It did not help the man's nerves to hear the beginning of Maelyx's reply, Inca interpreting words like 'survived' much less favorably than a more optimistic person might have. He did a fair job of keeping that fear from his face, but the rest of him still tensed up at the idea, his thoughts turning toward his mother, and sister first and foremost. With fear deadening his thoughts, he very nearly failed to hear Maelyx's talk of not being abandoned, but her gesture to follow was noted, even if his pursuit was delayed.

She started to explain what had happened, the names familiar, even the scenario that she painted was one that he found hard to swallow. Anathema had always felt so safe to the man, unchanging, a place he could always return to, but it had been swept away so quickly. He followed her inside, visibly alert, attention fixated on the woman who was explaining how his home had died. Visible relief washed over him when she started to name off people who had survived, that at least some portion of the pack had survived. It unnerved him that none of his immediate family were among the ones that Maelyx named, but he was reluctant to ask about them immediately.

With as lost in the woman's story as Inca was, it was lost on him that the building she'd led him into was in such disrepair. A bit of blankness to his stare as he processed what she'd said, the first words from his mouth even more hesitant than the question that had prompted the story. ”Wh... so everything. Everything was gone that quick?” Inca asked, disbelief in his voice, not really wanting to believe that something so stable could be disrupted like that. ”What... what about my mother? My brothers and sisters?” Inca asked worriedly, trying to bring attention to his need to know, but not confident enough to also ask where they might be.

It was a shock to be in her old cottage, so ruined as it was by war. It had not only been destroyed by vandals but it had mostly been looted of anything important. Still, there might have been one or two hiding spots where the thieves did not look.

Talking with Inca helped. She could keep her attention on the younger man and not dwell in the horror of the decay of her former home. When they first entered the cottage, her eyes wandered. Then her gaze fell upon her young daughter, who also was horror-stricken at the site... but it was a lesson that she had to learn, so might as well learn it while she was young.

Maelyx turned away from Jaketta before she could ask any painful questions, peering at Inca's sand colored visage. Yes, that quick, she repeated. That is the horror of war. It can spread so fast, take so much in so little time... But still, it is not all bad news. she added the last part as he asked about his family.

It has been sad for some... but no, she shook her head. You family is alright. At least, the ones that I know. I took the coven to the Moonstone Lakes to settle in an encampment. Do you know the place? Maelyx's head cocked in inquiry. It is halfway between here and Casa di Cavalieri. The coven settled there first, and shortly after they were done fighting the war, the warriors came. They call themselves The Order now. Last I knew, they have been making an attempt to organize themselves there, for mutual protection. Your mother is there. And others. She was not always the best at knowing the ins and outs of families, so she was reluctant to promise Inca that his entire family was thriving.

I would take you back there myself, but.. she paused, sighed. I will not be returning. Not for some time. I had a... recent illness... it still plagued her, dark spots around her vision, but she did not want to reveal it. And... I must find a pack. I know where I am going... Perhaps... we could strike a deal?

Now she sauntered up to Inca all business, ready to negotiate. You are a capable young man. I am still recovering, and Jaketta is but a pup, she motioned to the small girl. We could use some insurance to make sure that we make it there safely... How would you feel about being our escort? Surely he would want something in return. Damn the fact that she already told him where his family could be found...
