Time for a new beginning

Northern borders

POSTED: Fri Jun 08, 2018 9:49 am

Despite the dark that closed in around them, Elle felt confident as she lead her prized appaloosa from Krokar's borders down toward their destination. With the remaining two sacks of tobacco strapped to Spruis' back, there was no room for her to ride, but the mare was mercifully obedient as she followed after her new mistress. Slung over her shoulders, the curly-coated Cormier carried a pack that contained what few other items she had left after trading for the horse.

She was excited. She was excited and she was confident and she was happy. There would be no nagging aunts or uncles where they were going, no nosy parents or wondering cousins. For the first time in their lives, they were truly going to be free – liberated from the emotions and opinions and thoughts that she had, for so long, assumed so many in Krokar had about them. They were going to place where nobody knew them.

They were about to start their lives over.

As familiar scents began to creep into her nose, Elle drew in deep breaths of thick, heavy air and turned to her brother with a grin. "Coomin' oop, now," she said quietly, though her voice sounded loud in the surrounding stillness. Overhead, the sky was beginning to lighten with the promise of a new dawn. She slowed as the smell grew stronger, then stopped at the borders with one hand on her hip and the other holding the horse's reins. "Mistfell Vale."

She paused before looking at Fionnlagh again with a smile and lifted brows. "Ah'll call. The Nightstag knaas me." There was a sense of self-importance in her voice as she said this. The idea to come here, to Mistfell Vale, and divorce herself from her parents had started out as just the tiniest of seeds after her meeting with Calia. That idea had grown quickly, taking root in her heart and sprouting up into her head.

Tilting back her head, Elle Cormier howled doggishly into the early morning dawn, hoping for Calia but happy with anyone who could accept them into the pack. This was their new beginning.

OOC: Lol these rapscallions belong to you now. >:D Please allow Rat to post with Fionnlagh first. <3

OOC: Poor Lucky Mistwalkers getting this brat young man.

IC:
He had followed along on foot – well, on four feet - with a satchel strapped to his narrow back. Though he thought of himself and his twin as adults, Fionnlagh hadn’t quite grown out of the gangly teenage stage yet. He still had some filling out to do, some muscle and maturity to gain. Not that he’d ever acknowledge the latter – and if he did, he’d put any accumulation of maturity down to the fact that they’d lacked a Mother for half a year. As far as Fionny was concerned he’d had to grow up quickly.

He was certain the rest of the family saw them differently. They always had, whether it had been their eyes filling with pity when they’d been Motherless pups or narrowing in ire now they were grown, because Goddess forbid they act like adults. Fionnlagh had no doubt that his Aunt Eliza in particular would’ve been happy to baby them for years yet.

Breaking away from the glut of Cormiers in Krokar could only be a positive step for them.

The wheat coloured boy wore a lazy smile which cut through his parted lips in a sliver of gleaming ivory. When his sister paused and breathed out the name of the pack – still a mystery to Fionnlagh, though he’d needled as much information out of Elle as was possible – Fionnlagh’s ears stood erect for a few moments before flopping back into their natural state.

Had he been with anyone aside from Elle he might’ve feigned disinterest in the scents that thickened the pre-dawn breeze. As it was, beside the safety of his sister, he grinned. It cut him only a little to know that Elle was more familiar with the Vale than he was. He would catch up to her knowledge and connections soon enough; Fionny was as certain of that as he was of their decision to join up.

“Aye, ye call,” he agreed. “’n’ ah’ll shift.”

Soon the young man stood there two-legged with the strap of the satchel which contained all his worldly treasures slung over one shoulder. He shot Elle another grin and for once his features were bright with excitement.

Felix, for once not entirely too busy, heard the doggish call and wasted no time in lopping towards the northern border. As the grounds became more muddied and the trees thicker in the mire, he thought that he didn't usually traverse this way; perhaps it was his dislike of 'stickiness', or just that he didn't have much reason to go near this part of the territory. He knew, though, that it had value in its rare and plentiful plants.

He approached the border rapidly, and smelled not one, but two strangers, and their horse as well. He pushed through the thicket and smiled at the two - obviously dog, and somewhat young, as well. It was soon apparent that the strangers weren't quite strangers, but members of Krokar. Scents of caribou, livestock, dog, and the river clung to their fur like water on leaves after a heavy rain.

"Ah, Krokar!" he said happily, cocking his head as he looked at them with bright eyes. It hadn't been so long ago that Lucille had made her way to their border to speak more to the other leader, and he had left that interaction happy at the two packs' prospects. Apparently that feeling had been accurate, given the two waterdogs that stood before him now.

"What can I do for you two?"

As the notes of her call dissipated in the surrounding air, the stillness returned and Elle cast her eyes on the horizon. The sky was beginning to bloom with color, however slow it was, and she felt it fitting that they should arrive on the very edge of this new day. Flicking her eyes to her newly-shifted twin, Elle returned his grin. When was the last time she had seen him look so bright with excitement? She looked back across the invisible border into Mistfell Vale and thought it had been much too long.

It was time to change that.

Before they knew it, sounds of someone approaching from within the pack reached her ears. She pressed them forward and searched the surrounding mire for movement. There! Drawing in a breath, Elle straightened and quelled the excitement that was rising up in her own heart. More than any other time in her life, now was when she needed to make a good first impression.

"Aye, we've coome froom Krokar," she confirmed with a smile, glancing at her brother and back to the bright-eyed Mistwalker. "Ah'm Elle Cormier an' this is mah brother, Fionnlagh." It seemed appropriate to introduce him, too. "We've coom te join yer ranks. We want te be Mistwalkers." She fell silent.

To Fionny, feelings had always seemed to flow between him and his sister as easily as the blood flowing through his veins. His excitement was partly borrowed from Elle - though in the main he was excited for their new beginning too.

Only the faintest tingle of nerves worried at the golden youth’s mind. While he had never truly believed in Finlay as a Father and his belief in Ailie had waned over the months she’d been gone, Fionnlagh had always staunchly believed in Elle. The darker wolfdog looked confident and that confidence emanating from his sibling planted a seed of serenity in Fionny. This was the right thing for them; everything would be better from here on out.

Fionny’s shift completed, he straightened and rolled his shoulders before turning his eyes to the marshy ground ahead of them. The mire was dark and deep and it felt much more brooding than Krokar’s bright waters.

When a figure emerged, lean and still inherently wolfish, Fionnlagh’s head tilted. His grin remained but his gaze flicked to the young woman beside him. In this instance Fionny was happy to take the lead from Elle – and, as usual, his sibling was direct.

Of course, allowing Elle to take the lead didn’t mean that her brother would be content to fade into the background.

“If ye’ll have us,” Fionnlagh piped up, “Ah’ll turn me hand te whatever needs doin’.”

The girl spoke first, and her thick accent initially surprised Felix, causing him to miss her first couple of words. However, it soon became clear that though they had come from Krokar, they weren't looking to trade on behalf of the pack. No, they were leaving the freshwater pack in an attempt to join the ranks of the newly founded Mistwalkers.

"Hum!" Felix exclaimed, looking at the two - they were related, that much he could tell even before the girl Elle told him that Fionnlagh (a strange name wasn't it?) was her brother.

"And Krokar knows about this?" he asked, a small glimmer of humor in his eye. Not that that would be enough to deter him from accepting them; they seemed good, hard workers, just from virtue of being from Krokar. He knew them to be diligent from what he'd seen, and these two were young. They'd be willing to learn. "I suppose we may have room for two more..." he teased.

so sorry for the delay on this! :( welcome to mistfell vale! <3 | ###

The curious exclamation that burst from the Mistwalker's mouth startled Elle. She blinked and swiveled back her ears, but quickly regained her composure again with only a fleeting glance at her twin. As she returned her sea-green eyes to the man, the darker Cormier wondered what her brother was thinking of him. For her part, Elle thought him refreshingly strange.

Staring back at him, Elle's mind turned. Krokar absolutely did not know about this. But did it matter? Would it matter? "Aye," she said through a toothy grin, "Ah mean, o' course Ah told someone." That wasn't a lie. She had told the cat, Luath, that they were leaving. Eventually, whether it took a day or a moon, the news would get out and spread like wildfire.

Relief washed over her when they were finally accepted. "Ach, thank ye," she breathed, giving her tail a swift wag. She grinned at her brother again and then glanced curiously back at the Mistwalker – her new pack mate. "Er, Ah din't catch yer name. Wha' kin we caall ye?"

OOC: Yaaaaaay!! Thank yoooooou! <3

OOC: Sorry for the slight delay!

IC:
The wolfish male let out a sound more like the squawk of a bird than the humming of a bee to Fionny’s ears – but still it wasn’t entirely identifiable as being coupled with any particular emotion. Fionnlagh often spoke in the language of teenaged grunts with the odd huff or snort thrown in for good measure. He didn’t know what this exclamation meant and that was a little unnerving; when Elle’s eyes flicked to him he thought she must be feeling similar confusion but he held his composure – and his smile - well.

There was a genuine smile on the boy’s scruffy face, for while he wasn’t sure what to make of the male leader of the Vale, that in itself was refreshing. For far too long Fionny had been surrounded by – suffocated by – faces and personalities he was familiar with. He knew exactly what to expect from his aunts, uncles, cousins; to be in a place where such things were unwritten was a relief.

The golden brindle male barely hesitated before nodding at the Ravenking’s question. “We left word,” he assured him. That word might’ve been left with the caribou or with Abbott the feral tomcat, but it had been left.

Fionnlagh blinked at the man’s next words. They were accepted; Mistwallkers, yet to be proven but being offered a place. A new home. The boy’s smile widened into a dazzling grin and his tail swept vigorously to and fro.

“Thanks! Thank ye, Mister,” the youth gushed, momentarily forgetting any cool he’d arrived here with.
