The vial was tipped back and forth in her fingers. From the flickering light of her torch she could see the seeds as they rolled back and forth with her movements. The dog woman's ears flicked and her tongue ran across sharp teeth, pondering. The musty, dank scent of the storage room filled her nose and made her cough slightly; Dust motes danced in the thin streaks of light.

Helena put back the vial of mustard seeds and turned to grasp her linen wrapped charcoal, writing something down on the collected stack of paper with a slight frown. From behind the ones filled with her own meticulous record keeping there was another with more elaborate hand and this she perused for several minutes, following the curves of the inky lines. Tomorrow she would meet him, in Amherst.

Many Salsolan scents were jumbled together enough that she could not get a handle on whomever was taking the seeds slowly, day by day - along with a few other things that were missing that should not be.

Maybe all of these things made me who I am

Far too long she had not contributed anything good to the stores of herbs and things for Salsola. The winter season was not kind and she was tight-fisted with her willow bark and teas. It was too strong a remedy to simply let lay around, for anyone unlearned in the ways could easily kill themselves with excessive consumption. No, she dosed it herself and if anyone wanted to do it themselves without knowing what to do, she would have no part of it.

Instead, Ondine came with a great big sackcloth bag filled with dried spearmint. The odor was strong, fresh, and clean. She inhaled it deeply, loving the minty aroma that reminded her so much of a home freshly strewn with the herb. It always made everything just seem so much better and so much cleaner. Where the attitude and aptitude for neatness came from, she had no clue. Perhaps, it was just a remnant of Kaoru's presence lingering on.

But the shed was not empty. No, it was definitely not empty. Ondine furrowed her brows at the form, then came up behind her slowly, recognizing both the pelt and the smell, though it brought her no joy.

"What are you doing, Helena?" she asked flatly, brow raising as she clung to the bag of mint.

Noise from outside turned her head, capturing attention from her own internal musings. The heady aroma of spearmint invaded and overwhelmed the dusty space of the storage shed along with the dancing scent of the Seer. Of course talk was rampant of the lovely Ondine's exploits and another two children that were apparently now legitimized, too bad that did not erase the original stain of bastardy.

Truthfully Helena did not overly care much, whatever the Valentine's arguments with Till were had nothing at all to do with the Lykoi heiress, at least in her opinion.

So she smiled and nodded respectfully, "Seer, 'Ow nice to zee you." She jotted down one last thought upon her paper and ignored the less than enthusiastic tone, answering with gracious enthusiasm,

"Why, my Job of course. As Conserje I am responsible for overseeing zhe storage and stock. Keeping lists and notes, all zhat fun things." She shrugged and then a thoughtful expression lighted her face,

"You are adding spearmint.. 'Ow much, my dear? Anyzhing else either?" She poised with her charcoal pencil, ready to add a number to the new spearmint in its neat row.

Helena answered jovially, as though unperturbed by her less than warm greeting and question. Ondine sighed, letting her shoulders relax and sag, the herb dropping from her chest to lay lightly upon her arm. The bundles were dried and tied with fibrous sinew, easily made and found from any hunt. Her son had certainly provided plenty for her use, though he had quietly gifted them in the middle of the night, like the sneak that he was.

Her lips twitched into a smile without thinking, mostly because thoughts of her family warmed her heart. It was a quiet sort of happiness that she had not thought she'd achieve, even if her eldest son was on his own and up to his neck in his own sorts of mischief. He would figure out, mostly because he simply had to.

"Well, I suppose someone ought to do that," she replied, shuffling the herbs from one arm to the other, before skirting a little around Helena to deposit it onto the shelf where the herbs usually were. Her smile faded a little; it seemed as though the storage area needed some much needed attention.

"Two bundles," replied the Seer vaguely as she stared into the shadows. "It seems we've used up quite a bit, don't you think, Arbiter?" There was no suspicion in her voice, for usage was going to vary from time to time, especially after a long winter. But Helena was closer to the stores than most and would have known better than the rest what should and should not have been taken.

There was a thinness that stretched between them, even if Ondine no longer cared to consider it a connection, Helena could not forget that they had known each other before Salsola. It was a barely there strand, fragile as spun glass but it was there all the same.

Whether it may be looked down on or not, Helena enjoyed her Job and the sphere of influence it allowed her. She could rightly question any member of Salsola about their contributions and withdrawals from the storage, it gave her leverage if someone were taking too much and giving too little; she might have been persuaded to look the other way just a time or to in exchange for something worth having.

For moments her words upon the parchment were all the noises that came from her as Ondine slipped about and stacked up the bundles with the rest, "Mhm." she agreed in a noncommittal tone, "Zhey tend to wander more in the spring and summer, maybe we should zhink on increasing the plants for next year." She clicked her tongue lightly and made another remark on her paper, known only to herself and then abruptly she was looking at Ondine, into the lovely blue eyes,

"Ondine, you know much about zhe ways of 'erbs and spices. Other zhan for growing, do you know why zomeone might steal mustard seeds." The still calmness with which she asked the question showed that Helena laid no blame at Ondine's paws, but there was much curiosity. Helena did not know what other purpose they would have but for growing into mustard plants and that someone might steal them and not write down their withdrawals would suggest a nefarious purpose to her.

Ondine nodded, aware that the woman was not even looking at her to make note of the gesture. "I’ll add what surplus I can, provided the weather is favorable and the Goddess generous," she offered without hesitation. She was a child of Salsola, born and raised to support the Boss and the throne the title represented. Even if her beliefs often wavered, her loyalty failed to fall below to an unacceptable level. "I’ll have more by end of the summer." It was the best she would do, could do.

The sudden question made her pause, blinking back toward Helena as her arms were freed of the burden. “Mustard seed?” she repeated, then stared into space as she thought to her almanac and her mother’s anecdotes on the plant.

"I don’t grow it. Mother didn’t grow it, but we don’t really often see a point to it." She took another moment, hummed thoughtfully. "I suppose it’s good for heating aching joints since my mother mentioned ground up into a paste with water it’ll bring on heat where applied." Ondine’s brows furrowed as she fought to remember properly. Then she remembered why her mother never bothered to grow it, especially with young children and their sticky, greedy fingers running about.

"It’s toxic. Causes vomiting, or that’s what my mother said. I’d think it’d be useful for purging a poison. Or perhaps it could be a poison in great quantities?" she suggested, not entirely sure since she did not often work with the poisonous end of herbs. Most of her herbs were for cooking or for using outside the body.

An impatience grasped at her as Ondine thoughtfully mused over her question, she felt suddenly as though time were of a great importance and yet was in short supply. It was an especially jarring feeling and one she did not entirely care for. A shiver passed down her spine, beneath her cloak, and Helena was moved to draw it closer about herself as though cold suddenly.

She sucked in a breath through her teeth, the air hissing and her eloquent brows merged together in a furrow and then broached the highness of her forehead, swiftly raised by concern,

"I should 'ope not..." If it had been just once occurrence then maybe she could have viewed it in the light of a forgetful soul wishing to grow them for their greens, but a steady and slow trickle made her suspicious.

It was not a mystery she would solve that day though and she set aside its puzzlement for later thought. Again she looked to Ondine, who was, like Helena, no longer such a young thing. If Helena had known more of the Seer and had the luperci kept true calendars the two would know they were only separated by a mere ten days into this world with Helena being the older.

"I am also preparing to 'ave Emmett go to zhe Outpost again, to trade. Is zhere anything zhe Sanctus needs that I can supply?" Salsola did produce goods itself, there were some things the Thistle Kingdom lacked that only masters could produce.

It was also something of an olive branch, they may never be friends but she could at least say to herself that she had tried to nurture a more affable acquaintance.

Ondine eyed Helena a moment. It was perhaps sadly true the state of their lives may have been better if not for the woman’s unfortunate relationship. The Seer actually quite liked the woman when they had first met before she had ever even joined Inferni. But everything was complicated by the Lykoi bastard’s existence. It was tiring, sometimes.

"I hope so too. I wouldn’t like to think that something like that is going missing." She could hope and pray that it was being used for healing, but she had too much doubt in her heart on such a thing. Salsola was full of bad intentions and that meant that everything that could be poisonous would be used as such. A tool of lethal intentions, even when it could provide healing relief. She doubted a soul with pains of the joints was using the powder for respite from aches.

Ondine smiled slightly at Helena, knowing what the offer was for. It was for Helena’s duty as well as something of a reaching out. It was carefully veiled but Ondine had been a wallflower too long not to know how people worked and how their minds tended to operate. That much was something that never disappeared, no matter how much she was thrust forward.

"Any herbs that don’t grow locally would be my preference. There’s some southern plants that would be useful. She paused, looked into the storage. Wish we had honey. It’s so Goddess blessed useful," she added, then looked pointedly at Helena. Surely the overseer of their storage would know how to get such a thing.
