In these little boudoirs streaked with orange and red

[p. Arlen]

Sunlight struggled to stream down through the thick branches of proud trees that survived air blasts and earthquakes, and in the shade Galilee paused to pant. She'd blown most of her coat, but the occasional hot days remained miserable for the girl -- and the sun-high hour was better to nap than run through. She was eager to patrol today, though; something as simple as heat wouldn't deter her. As long as the big oaks and tamaracks spread their canopy overhead, she could rest a bit.

Patches of light did punch through where trees had fallen, however, and here bees droned around bright wild flowers that otherwise would not flourish in the eternal shade. Curious of these, Galilee padded through great swaths of color until a hornet chased her. Yelping in surprise more than pain, she broke out into a sprint and stopped only when her paws caught on damp, sloped earth, sending her tumbling down into a stream.

When she flung her head up, water sparkling through the air, Lee laughed.

Ethereal Eclipse, Lupus.

Arlen's days had become far less peaceful than they had been. It was wonderful. Despite having not yet achieved rank of Officer (something he'd quickly remedied for appearances sake), his father and king had chosen to allow his middle child the honor of being given an apprentice. Not only did this show Len just how highly his father thought of him, it also showed him that he had a lot to learn about the world.

Given the most recent change in the pack - the packwide ban on alcohol outside of their designated tavern - Len had been forced to strictly watch his drinking habits and he'd almost gotten himself sober. There were still the occasional late-night run ins at the bar, or weeks bad enough that he fled to the bar in Amherst, but overall, he'd shaped up quite a bit. Almost enough to make his apprentice proud. Almost.

Recently having achieved the job of Joker, it had been the young prince's duty to cheer up the populace of Casa. It was no easy feat, and one that left even cheerful little Len at a loss. It was almost like people didn't enjoy being pranked or fooled.

Teagan had not been happy to find out that her two youngest brothers had rearranged her entire home. In fact, the War Lord was so upset, that the officer had decided to spend the day as far away from her as he could get. In his lupus form, he travelled out of his familiar packlands and into old hunting grounds to see what he could find when a sharp giggling caught his ear.

He picked up the pace to a brisk spot until he found the source. A familiar face with an unknown name. "Having fun, Courtier?"

Rivulets of water ran down her long muzzle and were swept up by her pink tongue. In contrast with the sunny day, the brook was cool – quite welcoming to the water-loving wolfdog. She stood and watched the current ripple around her ankles, wiggled her paws to stir up silt.

She looked up again, ginger ears pricked, when something moved through the sun-starved underbrush. A tall, lean wolf appeared and greeted her by way of a question.

Lee laughed again, her voice husky and confident. “You betcha!”

With a bound, she leaped out of the stream and shook her fur out; it wasn’t too damp. She approached the male – a Cavalier, she smelled – without a trace of fear or hesitation. Extending her nose to sniff him, she decided she liked his ruddy freckles and the stripes beneath his green eyes.

“I’m Galilee,” the sandy-gold wolfdog said. “Haskel. Rookie soldier.” Sniff sniff. “My nose is telling me you’re a Knight?”

He smelled familiar, she thought – and she was certain they would have seen each other at the ball, though Lee had been a little too drunk to remember faces in passing. No, it was his scent that tickled her memory. He had to have been part of that family.

Arlen winced as Galilee shook herself off, the spray barely reaching him but pattering against the nearby foliage. Instinctually, he felt the need to shake himself off as if he'd gotten wet too, but instead his shoulders merely twitched and he smiled at her enthusiasm. She sniffed at him and his tail wagged in response, breathing in her familiar courtier smell in return.

"I'm Arlen Stryder." He cocked his head at her inference. "On my father's side, yes."

"Let's get out of the stream, yeah?" He asked as he backed away from the small waterway and into the woods on a flat ground. His red tail wagged gently behind him as he lead the way, occasionally looking back at her with a jade colored eye. If she spoke, he'd turn his green and pink studded ears back to listen to her, not bothering to turn his head the full way.

Rather than stop, he circled around her with a knowing look in his eye. "A rookie soldier, eh?" He lowered his chest toward the ground, a sweet snarl forming on his lips. "Well, I'm a second officer. Why don't you show me some moves?"

"Stryder," Galilee echoed. Her tail began to wag again, whipping against the leaves fringing the stream with a great deal of noise. "Does that mean you're related to Teagan too?" Though she had met the woman only once, Lee had admired her attitude and fighting skill, and itched to see her again next time they met with their allies.

Until then -- Arlen was interesting, too. She grinned as she climbed the bank out of the stream, following him into the woods. However, Arlen was quick to turn around and circle around, and Lee stiffened, though her tail was still wagging and her eyes bright and focused. Even before he dropped and wrinkled his lips challengingly, she adjusted her posture, claws digging into the ground for purchase, her hackles rising in an excited reddish ridge down her spine.

"Well all right!" the girl agreed in a high growl, then snapped her ears down against her skull and rushed him.

She only feinted at him the first time she barreled forward, bounding and pivoting when her darker paws touched the ground. She swung herself away before he could retaliate -- unless he gave real chase -- pulling her bushy tail between her legs briefly so he couldn't seize it. Then she was moving again, looking to see his reaction, to judge how he moved and decide on a good course of action.

"Yup!" Arlen crowed at her with a sharp puffing of his chest. He was proud of his sister, of his heritage, and all they had done. It was an honor to be a Stryder, but an honor more to be recognized among them. "She's my older sister, in fact. Do you know her well?"

If Galilee were trained in lupus combat by his older sister, then perhaps Len should have been worried by his invitation. Though he grew big and strong and skilled in combat, he'd never quite managed to reach the skill level of the oldest Stryder. It wasn't something he thought he would ever live to achieve.

Galilee quickly rose to the invitation, her golden body still shiny from her swim. She lunged towards him, seeming to be aiming for a head first approach, and his body tensed to meet her, when she quickly danced away from him. He circled backwards, refusing to give chase with his bad leg, yet also refusing to let her escape his sight.

The injured leg was held high above the ground, it was unreliable to bear weight anymore, but he trusted the Courtier to not take too much of an advantage with it. There was no point in fighting quite that dirty in a simple spar.

"Come on, girly! Is that the best you've got?" Arlen's tail wagged, waiting and watching for their true brawl to begin.

"Not well, she kicked my ass in a spar once," Galilee said without any bitterness. She remembered being delighted when the older woman flipped her over -- it had been a super cool move, and one she managed to surprise her father with when she came home. (Of course, Skoll had thrown her down next round easily.) "She's really cool! But you, I gotta feeling you'll be easy," she said, grinning and lowering her head as the atmosphere buzzed with the excitement of play.

When she jumped at him, Arlen tensed up -- then backed away rather than dart after her. She noticed that his hind leg was lifted off the ground, and grinned. Unfortunately, Arlen was wrong in putting his trust in the Courtier; she was an honorable woman in most things, but Lee wasn't afraid to fight dirty. Skoll had instilled that much in her.

"You'll know the best I got once I put you on your ass," she howled back. She continued to run from where she'd jumped away, circling around with her tongue lolling from her jaws and her tail streaming behind her, shimmering with water.

When she came in this time, she didn't quite close in, but aimed to bump him with her hip against his -- hoping she could throw his hindquarters off balance with only one leg supporting him. Her tail was swiftly tucked between her legs so he couldn't snap at it in passing, either.

Whether or not he stumbled, she aimed to throw herself at him afterward, full-body, her mouth open to grab his fur and give him a shake.
