Duck Duck Goose

[p. Dandelion]

It's noon in the Shiloh Hills, and it's breezy. Your character has accidentally angered a goose.

Swoop here's a random thread

A peaceful walk outside the borders was what she wanted. A peaceful walk. What happened was decidedly not a peaceful walk by any stretch of the imagination and creative definition altering. Peaceful implied that one would go unmolested and pass a quiet time through the summer foliage in the comforting, calming presence of butterflies, squirrels, and songbirds. It did not mean that one would be assailed by a cantankerous bird that honked in indignation at any footstep, gesture, or even breath that a person made.

No, a peaceful walk was not what Kalypso got despite wanting it so badly. Kalypso got a walk that was disturbed by a loud, honking bird that hissed at her the moment she traipsed too close to the edge of the pond. A refreshing drink was the whole reason she was in that mess, with that Canadian goose hissing at her as though it was a snake and not a feathered monstrosity that seemed too stupid or too stubborn to be afraid of a two-legged canine ten times its size.

Kalypso glared at the creature, waving her hands at it despite the fact it continued to hiss at her. It spread its wings at her, fluffing up its chest plumage with indignation and the Reine did the exact same thing right back. Her dress was tight across that belly as she puffed up, though, and she felt her instincts kick in to deflate. She did not want to feel that reminder of pregnancy, no way.

A nearby stick found its way into her hand as she waved it at the goose but the creature just hissed forward and tried to peck at the stick instead, like a massive asshole. But it was clear, the goose was indeed a massive asshole.

It lunged toward her, honking and hissing. Kalypso would have attacked the damn thing in any other condition other than the one she was actually in, so she screamed. It was a scream that was full of anger, frustration, and hormonal fear. She started to run but the damn bird was right there behind her. Hissing and honking.

As it happened Dandelion was sprawled on a rock in his Lupus form, enjoying the warm sun and cool breezes the region had to offer. He had things to do and places to be but... well, none of it was urgent. Probably. It wouldn't hurt to rest a bit. Nothing could possibly go wrong, he was sure.

Then it immediately went wrong, because of course it did.

The sound of a wolf shrieking sent him running. He didn't stop to consider the consequences, or wonder what was waiting for him if he did find the voice. It was an instinct that ran through his entire being. Dandelion burst into the clearing at the water's edge at full tilt.

Now there was one thing the casual passerby might not know about geese, which Dandy unfortunately did. Where there was one goose there were usually more. Usually lots. Even as he watched two or three more heads popped out of the tall reeds, their beady eyes burning with murderous intent. Or that's what he imagined, anyway. He dove between the goose and it's intended victim with a low, guttural growl, shifting into his Optime form in hopes of looking more imposing.

It would have been more heroic if he didn't immediately let out a high-pitched yelp at a well-placed bite and decide that wisdom was the better part of valor.

"Sorry, miss," he said even as he scooped her off the ground. Dandelion was already half in motion, jumping over a log and taking off at his top speed - or not. He lurched forward and nearly stumbled. The woman cradled in his arms wasn't petite on her best day, and she was heavy with pups. Even at his size and strength it was enough to slow him down significantly.

Heavy wings buffeted around his head and shoulders, but Dandelion just lowered his head and doubled down on the whole running away thing, tucking her closer against his chest to shift her weight inward. His heart pounded in his chest, leaving his limbs shaky with fear. There were few things in this world that made him even wary much less afraid. Among them were moose - which any sane creature would treat with respect - and geese. Dandelion didn't hate anything in this world, but geese? He really, really didn't like geese.

Behind them Dandy could hear the sound of angry goose honking growing louder. Multiplying.

Ahh sorry this was a bad reply

Kalypso had turned to run but noises from something other than the malicious goose caught her attention and she slowed down to look over her shoulder.

A man let out the least manly, high-pitched yelp she had ever had the unfortunate of letting echo into her brain. She winced visibly, twitching to a halt as it made her skin crawl and the goose came honking right on after him. It was like something out of a deranged nightmare that did not seem to be ending any time soon.

A large man scooped her up with apology, after being pecked and snapped at by the bird of course. Kalypso was yelling as he picked her up, and she nearly flayed with indignity up at him. A mark on his face made her pause, wondering if it were a scar, but the insistent goose took her attention away.

Why are you running from the bird! Put me down and just kill it! she yelled as she began to struggle in the man's grasp, trying to escape a rescue that she was definitely thankful for. However, Kalypso was more than eager to see the creature killed between someone's teeth, preferably her own. She wanted to eat the damn thing for scaring the ever living shit out of her, and endangering her life. Were she not afraid to shift to all fours, she would have killed it on her own.

Kalypso tried to reach for a nearby branch, anything to stop the man's progression just so that they could end the damn bird.

He's just afraid of birds give him a break.

Dandy winced at the shout, feeling a little too much like he was being scolded. Maybe she thought he was stupid, but he was doing his best!

"I don't want to!" He shouted back, breaking off to yelp again at another pinch to his shoulder. "They're scary!!"

Dandelion was a stalwart defender of the weak and all that, but there was only so much he could be expected to deal with. Big scary birds weren't one of those things, and more than one was right out. She could wiggle and yell all she wanted but he wasn't gonna. Nope. Not happening. Unfortunately she was wiggling and yelling an awful lot, and when she leaned far out to grab a branch she threw off his balance and nearly toppled both of them.

This wasn't gonna work.

He set her down - gently, gently, he took a long time to learn, but he did learn - and turned around to face the birds. Many luperci would shift to their four-legged form, turn this into something resembling a fair fight. Instead Dandelion reached out and snagged the first goose around the neck with surprising accuracy, bracing himself against the buffeting wings. Then he snapped out his arm with a powerful motion, swinging the goose by its neck and giving it a hard shake. There was an audible crack, and the body fell limp.

This just infuriated the other bird even more, and it came after him with even more rage.

Dandy repeated the maneuver with the second bird, and thankfully the others - juveniles by the look of them - took the hint and skedaddled in the other direction. The sudden silence was enough to make him flop back onto his butt, a dead goose clutched in each fist. He really hoped it looked like it was on purpose, and not that his legs were shaking too hard to hold him up.

"Why were you yellin' at me? You were scared too!" There had never been a stranger contrast between the effortless killing that just took place and the fact that Dandy was openly sulking. After a moment he made a visible effort to perk back up, holding out one of the geese with a hopeful expression. "Uh, you can have this. Sorry for pickin' you up. Are you okay?"

He knew he wasn't supposed to just pick up other luperci, even if he could. Especially not strange females, since that would either scare them or make them mad. Or both. Which usually meant that Dandy was in for a scolding, which he really, really didn't want. Or being bitten, which he wanted even less.

And you are a wolf! she hollered at him right back. Her face bore an expression of sheer disbelief. They were wolves, canines, and their teeth were far stronger than any hollow boned bird's might. A bird of prey might be a true danger to the eyes and body, but a goose ate weeds to live and swam on a pond. What damage was it going to do to a skilled hunter? And the stranger was massive. A wall of muscle was afraid of birds? Preposterous!

He finally set her down and she curled her fingers over her belly in a protective stance, though she continued to glare at the man as he turned to face the birds properly. He ought to have struggled far less against the suggestion. Hell, he ought to have just attacked it and killed it outright from the get-go.

Truthfully, it was far more amusing to watch the situation from her position. She was happy not to be attacked by geese and was more than happy to watch someone else suffer deal with the problem.

It took so little time from grappling the first goose to strangling the second that Kalypso merely stood there, staring at the man's broad back with a goose in each hand. She slowly reached out her hand to grab the one offered to her, without a single word uttered as she tightened her hands around the snapped neck.

I was yelling because I'm a pregnant lady and I can't defend myself well right now! she exclaimed finally, after the stupor had worn off from her head. She waved the goose at the man, the man who was incredibly massive. I mean, thank you for helping me! But why are you scared of geese! You are an apex predator and they are overgrown chickens with an attitude! she added, huffing, crossing her arms and feeling the strangeness of goose hitting her hip.

I can bite off more and I can chew
We may never know what I can do
Dandelion Damaichu

Dandy scratched the back of the head, a cheerfully sheepish expression crossing his face. It was true that he was large, but he had his head ducked and his shoulders drawn inward. Not cringing by any stretch of the imagination, but making himself... smaller. Less threatening.

You ain't ever been afraid when there was no real reason to be? Despite the depth of his voice it was soft and slow, like a sleepy tree that learned to talk and never quite picked up the urgency of more vital beings.

He shrugged, without any change in his easygoing expression. Dandy didn't hold the lady's irritation against her, cause he understood why she was mad. Even if he was happy with who he was, he knew the places that other luperci thought he fell short. Ya know, I wasn't always as big as I am now. An' when I was little, I got the tar beat outta me by a pair of real big swans. Way meaner than geese, ya know?

And when I see birds that look even a little bit like that, it's like I get - um - all shaky inside. It didn't occur to him to lie. He wasn't naturally inclined to deception and never had been.

He wondered if she was someone important. She had that air about her, like she was used to people doing what she said when she said it. Those kinds of people were usually more impatient and prickly. It probably wasn't good for their health, but what did he know?

You're a tough lady so I bet you coulda took them all on your own, but I guess I am a wolf. I didn't have it in me to let you do it yourself. He fidgeted a little, picking bits of grass out of the end of his tail. You won't tell anybody, will ya? There's folks that'll have unkind things to say. Just 'cause I'm a big guy they don't think I get to be scared of anything.

Kalypso narrowed her eyes a moment at the question. It seemed such a silly thing, but when she got down to actually thinking about it, she realized that it was just not something that she had ever done. Not really. Most of the time, her worries felt justified, and even then, she would persist despite knowing the very real consequences to her actions. Fear would never hold her back, not truly.

Not as far as I recall. Maybe as a pup at my mother's teat, sure, but then the world is new and scary, she finally answered, her tone a little surprised and thoughtful. She really had not remembered her childhood as a wild pup, exploring and such. Even then, she struggled to recall any time she was truly afraid unreasonably. Kalypso scratched at her chin in thought, despite having answered him.

Her brows raised. Swans were gorgeous creatures and equally delicious, though far too much trouble to hunt when they were in pairs, which they seemed to be so often. Swans are nasty and I bet you were just a little butterball then, huh? she admitted, her stance softening and her shoulders lowering to far less stressed looking levels. Her hands were in front of her, making the shape of a ball just about the size of a young pup that was definitely only a couple of months old at best.

But the Savoy woman shook her head. Geese are far easier to handle than a swan. I'll take geese over swans, any day. Not that she would choose to go after geese; feathers were a pain in the ass and she was not taught how to use the plumage well. She felt some pity for him though. Being afraid of such simple creatures? What a shame. They were so common that it was a marvel. Did he fear chickens, too?

Kalypso laughed, hands on her bell. I probably would have but.. I'm in a bit of a delicate condition right now. Can't really shift and show 'em my teeth properly. It was surprising to her that she would miss the forms she rarely used when she could no longer use them. Still, she was happy to be saved.

Uncharacteristically of her, Kalypso moved forward and put a thankful hand on the man's arm, smiling somewhat. Thank you for the help. It's appreciated. And she somehow meant it fully.

It was no trouble. Dandy puffed up a little at her thanks, and nodded his head decisively as if to back up his barefaced lie. It was only a little one! He really didn't mind helping her out, even if it was ultimately scarier than he hoped his day would go. He straightened to his full height, relaxing a little in a subconscious mirror of her body language.

You're gonna have lots of kids, huh? Are you excited? He lit up at the thought. Dandy had always loved little pups, though it took a lot of work to get them to trust him cause he was so tall and his voice was so deep. Sometimes it made them scared. He couldn't remember being that small, but he bet it was real scary seeing something so big when you were so little.

He patted her hand on his arm, and paused mid-motion as if struck by an idea.

Ya know, I'm real big so most scary things leave me alone. Would you like me to walk you where you're goin'? Just until we get to where you feel safe. There was no strong emotion in the question, in the form of either eagerness or reluctance. He smiled a little wryly, All I gotta do is look tough, mostly.

It was a good idea, he thought, his ears perking cheerfully. She was definitely very pregnant - it wasn't like he hadn't noticed - and if she got injured it could be a while before someone tracked her out here. It only took minutes to bleed out, and a broken neck or spine killed faster still. He tilted his head with an expression of gentle attentiveness. Is it okay? I'd feel bad if somethin' happened to you.

The man seemed genuinely sweet, which made Kalypso feel a little guilty over yelling. She was a reactive sort of person and he seemed like a person that was perhaps a little too sweet for his own good. He meant well for all that he gave a mixed bag display between cowardice and chivalry. Strange mix, but she appreciated it nonetheless.

That he was even excited by the prospect of her, a stranger, have kids put an even bigger clamp around her heart. No, not bigger. Tighter. It squeezed into her chest and made everything feel more close and less comfortable. She did not show her discomfort, not when he had clearly not intended to upset her. It was hardly fair of her to feel that way, regardless. She ought to be happy to be doing her duty as a female but there was too much beneath the surface to make it okay.

You know what, sure. I think I'd appreciate that. Kalypso surprised herself with agreeing to the task. She wanted to be independent and letting someone escort her to safety felt like it took away from that sensation. Yet, there was no denying that the nurturing instinct was horribly strong and she needed to protect the creatures within. She put a hand upon her belly and felt it critically. Light movement, nothing more, and no pain. All was well.

I think it's fine, she admitted as she began to pull him toward the Court - or the direction of it. I didn't get a chance to introduce myself when I was screaming at you. I'm Kalypso, and I rule the Court. I could offer you somewhere to stay or something else for your help? she offered as she began to shuffle along.

I'm Dandelion, he said it with a subtle lilt to the tone, Dan-de-lion, making his delight in the name obvious, but you can call me Dandy! Everyone does.

Dandelion wasn't fearless. There were plenty of things that made him scared, like birds and tight spaces and the thought of hurting someone on accident. When it came to taking a hand when it was offered? He was never afraid.

You don't gotta pull on me. I'll follow you wherever you want, he said mildly, but he didn't pull out of her grip. He was used to this kind of thing, with a bunch of bossy siblings and all.

He could have easily outpaced Kalypso, but he matched her instead, swinging their hands back and forth a little as they walked. Dandy wouldn't have taken the liberty himself - that was another of the Rules about not making people uncomfortable - but he was fully willing to take advantage of the fact she'd grabbed him first. It was a lot of work learning how to best interact with each person he met. Learning to be kind to them in the ways they wanted, and not the ways that would make him happy. But he tried his best! Maybe eventually he'd figure that stuff out.

I'd be happy to stay for a while, but not cause I helped. You don't owe me anything for that. He grinned at the offer though, rubbing a shy hand down his muzzle. Even without any thanks he would have been glad to help, but it made him happy. It was a warming, flustery feeling to know for sure that he'd done what he set out to do.

The whole "ruler of the court" thing didn't really hit him until just that moment, less like a shocking revelation and more like finding out that his new friend collected walnuts as a hobby. It was difficult to reconcile in his head, and really weird to think of him, Dandelion, talking to somebody Important. Luperci who did Important Things didn't normally talk to him so much as tell him to do things.

Guess it's good you didn't get eaten by a goose, he nudged her shoulder with his - carefully! - and chuckled at his own joke. Ain't that a way for the ruler of the court to go?
