The path I walk's in the wrong direction

A few hours after dawn. Rabbit Lake

"Have you been near here long?" Alouette asked, her voice just above a whisper. "No, not long. I got here a few hours before you, the birds were already really active by then," she got in reply as she looked above herself and into the trees that littered the coast of the Rabbit lake. She occasionally came here since it was the camp Dreyma and Alouette had come to at least a week before they had joined the Court.

She remembered being so eager to prove herself then, remembered the innocence she had had then and the innocence she still tried to portray till this day. Things were much simpler then.

Her eyes drifted from the tree tops to the tawny coyote who lay on the ground beside her, orange eyes settled upon the sky and the birds that flew around the tree they had chosen to hide underneath to combat the heat of the sun. When Alouette didn't answer her, the woman turned her attention from the birds to peer at Alouette, fiery eyes illuminated by the sun's glare off of them. "You said you live near here?" she asked patiently, her fingers curling in the fur at her sides. She sat up, glancing around. "There's only one pack within a few hours of here, isn't there?"

Alouette offered a nod, her eyes darting toward the wooded area just beyond them and then back to the lake. She caught a blur of movement in the bushes one moment, the next she was staring at a white and black cat that sat at the edge of the woods, peering in her direction with a hunger in its eyes. The cat itself was not large. A runt, she suspected. but it was old, scraggly and its fur had lightly grayed in places. It also looked like it had missing patches of fur.. Probably a disease, she guessed.

She turned her gaze away, settling it on the woman. "I live in the Court, Cour des Miracles. It's a great place," Alouette offered with a small smile. "I think you should join," she murmured, leaning to lightly nudge at the taller woman with her shoulder. "I can't. Not right now, anyway. There's something I have to do first," was what Alouette got back. Confused and curious, Alouette's ears flattened against her head and her head canted to show her interest. "And what's that, Rena?"

The disappearance of Dreyma had taken its toll on the children she never wished to claim as hers, leaving Skoll to pick up the pieces.

Her departure from the pack had shocked him, though others like her family seemed less surprised. She had been antsy since the puppies were born, at turns possessive of the little creatures or avoiding them nervously -- moreso the latter lately. Skoll knew that she never intended to be a mother to them, but part of him had hoped that she would recognize her feelings for them and stay around. The kids had loved her, after all.

Now Issola was confused and upset, and Oberyn was acting out, and Skoll didn't know what to tell them when they asked where she was or if she was ever coming back.

The male stalked through the trees in his Secui form, muscular and leonine, and raised his head to watch the sun as it rose through the leaves. The days would grow shorter again soon, and the season of his birth would touch the treetops to gold. He would turn seven year sold. The prospect twisted his stomach with something he dared not call fear.

He stopped and sniffed as he neared the shores of Rabbit Lake. Someone else had come through -- Alouette, he realized, Dreyma's tagalong sister-figure. He had overlooked the girl in favor of paying attention to the dark Moineau, but now he felt his mouth dry, and he wondered if Alou might have been told something he had not.

As he broke through into neutral territory and dropped down to the earthy bank, his claws digging in for purchase, he stiffened at a second presence. A coyote -- his eye narrowed as he looked over the female, his nostrils flaring. His posture dominant, he waltzed over to the females as if he owned the place personally.

"Who's your friend, Alouette?" Skoll asked, grinning.

"I can't say! Otherwise, it wouldn't be a secret." That's how Rena answered Alouette's little question, leaning over to lightly nudge at Alouette's side which brought a small, bubbling chuckle from the dark, tawny girl. Despite the fact that the two had only recently met, it was clear that there were the beginnings of a friendship between the duo. Rena was feral herself, though had a humanized side quite like Alouette or so that's what Alouette had observed..

Only a different skill set, set the two apart. She had been secretive though, and Alouette, because of this reason, had held back a fairly decent amount of knowledge based on the Court, giving only small details here and their that offered the opportunity for the girl to join, if she chose to snag the invitation and run with it which obviously wasn't going to happen right now.

She had leaned back on the ground, staring up at the sky and its clouds, non-observant of the squirrel who's attention had found her and her friend, even the sounds made by a wandering Court member had failed to find her until Skoll was upon them, first noticing Alouette, she supposed, who looked startled for an instant and then who feigned friendliness, despite the risk for awkwardness due to Dreyma, and then the coyote girl who had earned, without doing a thing, a look that could have been ire or mistrust.

Alouette hadn't been in the Court during the Inferni and Cour des Miracles war. She hadn't had to earn the mistrust that was guaranteed coyote stragglers in the world outside the pack's borders. It only made sense to her that she should be friendly unless their trust wasn't warranted or in the case that they were declared enemies of the Court.

Rena seemed to notice the look in Skoll's eye and rose to her feet, quickly followed by Alouette who neither grabbed for her belongings or really moved to vacate the area. "This is Rena. She's a friend," Alouette answered with a small nod of her head. "I was just asking her if she'd think about joining the pack." Rena, upon being introduced, gave a small nod of her head, ears alert in the off chance Skoll decided she was worth a chase or advance in the unfriendly way. "Hi."

The coyote stood, her oversized ears pricked warily. Alouette, in constrast, made no such movement; she merely nodded and introduced the stranger as Rena, a friend -- a prospective Court member. The thought made Skoll bare his yellowed teeth in amusement; coyotes had never lasted long in the kingdom of wolfdogs, despite their claim to misfitdom. The last who'd sought shelter there met a grim end, not someting that brought any joy to Skoll -- but it was a sign, maybe.

A sign that Skoll sought out justifications for tragedies anywhere he could, a troubled man who sometimes wondered what God's plan was for them all.

He stretched his forepaws forward, unsheathing his large, dull claws and raking the earth. Muscles rippled along his back as he bowed and yawned, then straightened up again. A friend, huh? You two looked awfully close. Sisterly, almost. Was Alouette part of the reason for Dreyma's retreat? Drey had spoken so fondly of the girl, until she hadn't said much about her at all; back then, he'd supposed that they'd grown apart like siblings (or cousins) were sometimes wont to do, but now he latched onto this with his big teeth, feeling mean.

What about it, then, Rena? Skoll raised his white brows at her. Thinking about it?
