The clan moved south, taking their tents and horses along the coast to set up anew. This nomadic life was something to get used to, but Boone found himself adapting readily enough. He tried to make himself useful -- to prove himself to his companions that his contributions were important and that he was vital, especially now that his birthright had been stripped away. No longer was he the true born son of Inferni, he was just Boone. Nevertheless, Boone was determined to be someone still.

So he took to the woods with a bow, tracking a wounded deer he had shot an hour before. The arrow had not been enough to take it down, and the trail of blood led him weaving through the coastal woods. It was staggering, he could tell. Its tracks in the mud were irregular, panicked. It would not be long now.

The trail led him toward the coast where the trees grew less dense. The salt in the air stung Boone's sinuses and he could hear waves lapping against the rocky cliffs in this distance. This was where the world ended. He was distracted for a moment, gaze shifting from the trail to a dark figure standing on the cliffs edge. He stopped, curious as to why she lingered so close. She turned back and her eyes met his.

She waved. He waved back. Then, she took a step toward the edge and jumped off.

Boone dropped the bow in horror, believing he had just watched someone die. He was still for a moment, stunned, but he was soon compelled to move out of morbid curiosity. To see her body carried in the waves. He slowly made his way toward the cliff and looked down. He saw nothing.

The trail was all but forgotten.

The wind buffeted her, this close to the edge. Long strands of slate grey whipped into her lovely face, eyes closed she strode along the cliff-side with an impunity felt so deeply inside of herself. Any moment she could make a misstep and go plunging down into the swelling ocean.

She exhaled, a long, slow thing, and held out her arms to the sides. They rose gracefully, controlled, like a bird's wings, ready to fly.

Beneath the calmness her heart beat as a hummingbird's, fast and strong. The waves crashed up against the rock so far below and she could swear she felt the vibrations of it through her paws. Salt and seaweed curled in her nose, and left its tang upon her tongue.

Astral eyes flipped open and then she caught sight of the ash haired male that watched her. She waved, he waved back. Quinn leaped backwards and let the cyclopean chasm swallow her up.

The wind rushed by her, screaming in her ears. The sensation of flying struck her and she spread her arms again, the wind flowed through her outstretched fingers. The churning waves raced to meet her, the girl closed her eyes and angled downwards, spearing into the water, gravity dragging her down.

She twisted in the water, invigorated, and swam upwards, admiring the way the sun pierced through the deep blue with fragmented shafts of light that rippled and flexed.

Quinn broke the surface, inhaling deeply and saw the grey-haired male looking over the cliff at her. She cupped her hands and shouted, her pixie voice echoing upwards,

Come on in, if you're brave enough! Quinn let the water take her, leaning into it and floating on her back, buoyed up by it.

Boone lingered at the cliff's edge for a moment, waiting patiently for a body to rise to the surface. A floater. His morbid curiosity demanded something -- some simple satisfaction, dark as it was. He had no such thing, for a head soon breached the surface. The woman's long, wet hair fwhipped, casting droplets water back as she greedily drew breath. Boone was intrigued, not only to see that the stranger had survived the fall, but she seemed as if she enjoyed such a terrifying feat.

He had to squint, but he swore he saw her smiling.

She shouted up to him and Boone was taken aback. He pointed to his chest and his eyebrows quirked. Me? they asked, eyes wide. There was a voice in Boone: some small thing screamed of self preservation and begged him not to do something so foolhardy. Yet, the rest of Boone saw a pretty girl that beckoned him over the edge. Worse things had been done to impress a girl, he supposed.

He hesitated, lingering close for a long and awkward beat. The drop was no less than 40 feet. He could swim, but such a plunge was nearly unthinkable. "Uhhh," he muttered, fists clenched. Nails dug into skin. "I, uh -- okay." Boone was a man of few fears. The first, dying penniless in some flea bit hollow as a fucking fisherman. The second, looking like a bitch. He refused to look like a bitch today.

Breathing deep and slow, Boone could feel his heart beat hard in his chest. He took a few steps back, deciding he needed a running start to fully commit. He was in this now. No turning back. He set his feet to motion and leapt, keeping his arms and legs tight. Eyes closed, Boone was embraced by nothing for far too long.

The water was cold and jarring. He sank below and limbs flailed about in the deep.

She saw him hesitate and in that cold, dark place of her that was a horrible imagining of her ancestors, she judged him for it. She compared him and knew that Uriah would have never waited even a second after such a dare, he would have flung himself with reckless abandon from those heights. The waters were calm but it mattered not, she was a seething storm all of her own. Like the ever moving ocean, always restless, always writhing.

She gestured, with grasping fingers, inciting him to come and join her, splashing her legs against the lingering waves. Her whiskers trembled as he took steps back, was he going to chicken out?

Quinn laughed as he leapt, it was a graceless thing and he dropped through the air like a flung stone. Almost as if he'd never been cliff diving before. He plummeted into the water only a few breast strokes away from her and Quinn was already in motion, taking a deep breath and diving beneath the aquamarine waves.

He had not sunk far and she swam down towards him, her shape silhouetted against the paler, light-drenched surf. Quinn reached out to grasp one of his hands. For several moments they two were suspended in the gentle swell; Her ocean-bright eyes gleamed akin to the sun-dappled water above her, sparkling brilliantly. The slate hair billowed in serene clouds about her face and head.

She kicked her legs and together they headed for the surface with bubbles streaming from both nose and mouth. Breaching the crest of the sea allowed for more breaths to be taken, her faerie-touched voice filled the space between them,

I didn't think you were going to jump. Lilting cadence gave evidence to what her opinion of that might have been.

The deep opened its maw and swallowed Boone whole, enveloping him in a cold and alien darkness. His first instinct was to panic. To kick and flail and thrash about. In that moment, it was as if Boone had forgotten how to swim. He opened his eyes and could see light trickling down from above.

A hand reached for his and grabbed his wrist tightly. He saw the girl, swimming, kicking, cutting through the water as if she'd been born beneath the waves. A god damn mermaid. She pulled him up and his face soon breached the surface.

Eyes wide and wild, Boone drew a greedy breath. His heart thrummed in his chest and there was a tightness that lingered that would not dissipate. The woman spoke and Boone swore he could sense condescension. His brow furrowed. "Pshhhhhh," the boy voiced between heavy breath, treading water at the stranger's side. "I'm no coward."

It was easy to lie -- far easier than throwing oneself over a cliff into the abyss. "That was fun," he smiled. "Lets do it again." Anything to impress a pretty girl.

The ocean called her, it always had done so ever since she had watched that fearsome storm batter the unaptly named Serene Sands as a girl. Her mother had so many to care for that no one had noticed Quinn slipping away.

Oh, how the wind had raged and ripped at her fur, how the rain had stung her eyes and the formidable waves had thrown themselves against the rock in bitter, arching fury. Quinn had been sodden, soaked to the bone when someone had finally realized she was missing and had found her, and completely in love with the ocean from those moments on.

Bravado, she knew it well. She wore it on her own sleeves, Quinn's smile changed into something so much more daring as he suggested they go again.

There's a beach, just down the way. We can climb up and jump off again. Then she had let go of his paw and was sliding through the water with speed, as graceful as any of the fish that swum at their feet. Through the waves she carried herself, already anticipating the next spike that would carry her higher.

She barely did realize that she had left him behind until she strode up onto the beach, turning, and he was still swimming towards her. The girl shook herself as the canines did, flinging the ocean's water in all directions. The cliff lowered its edge here, and was only about fifteen or so feet to climb. Not much of a challenge for Quinn.

While the lie fell easily from Boone's lips, he did not quite expect his new acquaintance to call his bluff. The adrenaline from doing it once had been more than enough -- and Boone had thought her to have been satisfied. Yet, surprised as he was with her willingness to subject them both to the plunge again, Boone acquiesced. He could not back down now, even if he wanted to.

She let go of his hand and started swimming toward the shore. Boone followed behind, but he was no natural in the water. He was slow, and while she was a hot knife through butter, Boone was dump truck through molasses. Graceless.

Boone too shook himself dry after swimming to shore. He neared the cliffs edge and looked up -- it wasn't so bad. A simple climb really. The climb up seemed far better than the jump down. Boone laughed and wore a cocky smirk. "Shoot," he said. "We're climbing this thing? Child's play." He shook his head coyly and set about his climb.

Hand over foot, Boone slowly worked his way up. He was no climber -- had never done anything of the sort, and it showed. His ascent was slow, and he took few risks, seeking only the seemingly easy hand and footholds.

Yet, about ten feet up, a rock beneath his foot slipped free from the cliff, and Boone's body lurched. "Shit!" he shouted, heart seizing in his chest. Mortified, he gripped his handhold tightly and clung to the cliff's face for dear life.

The inherent competitiveness that absorbed her inner being blared loudly, she was winning. If ever the young male thought to suggest they stop at just one leap, it was wiped away by Quinn's brazen, fearless attitude. The high was all she chased, as the users of drugs would scramble for their next fix, so did Quinn throw herself from ever higher and higher precipices. It was a toxic combination.

Damp slate hair did not ruffle much in the breeze that railed against their ascent. She was swift, taking chances no sane wolf would have even considered. Leaping from handhold to handhold like a spider clambered about its web, secure in its foothold. When the path she had taken yielding up something of a dead end, rather than clambering back down to find a safer way upwards, Quinn coiled herself and jumped. The top of the cliff was so close....

Her fingers grasped and caught the edge, her feet scrambled to find purchase, digging into the rocks and she hauled herself over the edge, laughing with breathless delight.

Below, still climbing, he faltered and let out a yell.

The girl stuck her head and torso out over the edge, pupils constricting as the wind buffeted her again.

Give me your hand! She trilled, thoroughly enjoying this game. She reached down, teetering dangerously off the ledge, and grasped a hold of him. Quinn pulled, the strength of all her gymnastic games tensing in her arms, her shoulders, her back. He was a skinny thing, she would not have said that she hauled him up easily but she hauled him up and over the cliff edge with him scrabbling in fear at the rock.

Wasn't that such fun. She was all smiles, all exhilarated beauty with diamonds sparkling in her ocean eyes.
