Sometimes questions would arise that Temnota could not answer by himself. Usually they were queries that Temnota would take to his older sisters, or to his Отец. This one though, something deep in his chest told him that he shouldn't ask such a thing. The concept of pain was one he could grasp easily, when Pushok bit his ear too hard, or when he stumbled and tripped and stubbed his nose. Pain inside though... that was harder to understand.

Where had Мама gone, all that time ago when Tem and Push had been newly born. For Temnota such a time seemed like forever had passed.

He did not understand enough to make it into words that could be spoken. It was more than could be said. It was a feeling that wriggled uneasily in his tummy, as if he had eaten worms for lunch. Which he had, but he didn't think they would still wriggle after so long. Tem's paws were still muddy from his digging, and there were smears of dirt on his face.

He scuffed at the ground, the snow here was mucky, all stomped down into the earth. It squished between his paws and he made a face that was part grossed out and part delighted. An expectation lingered, he wasn't sure what it was. He almost thought that there should be a voice somewhere, chastising him for getting so muddy.

There was only silence, and the rustling of dried branches in the breeze.

The silence was heavy, it made him feel tired. Like he had run a long way without a rest. Unable to express himself any other way, Tem's mouth opened and he uttered a 'kii-yii'. A quiet puppy sound to break the stillness. Despite the late afternoon sun that peeked in through the trees, Temnota felt cold.

A stick landed within the snow with a fwmop, rather than a thud, and Pushok's bright eyes pegged on it. From where he stood, he lunged through the depth of the snow and landed with a bark. Brilliant white teeth wrapped around the stick, little growls creeping from his throat as he tossed it around with his head. Eventually, it shot from his mouth and flew across the clearing, landing upright in the snow. Back and forth Pushok tormented the stick, until it finally sailed somewhere he couldn't reach.

Bi-hued eyes sat upon the Den site campfire, betrayed. It had eaten his precious stick, without so much as a word. He knew now better than to try and get it back. Fire was hot, and it hurt if you got too close, even if it felt good when it was cold and you were a ways away. Nevertheless, he was destitute. Boredom was sure to roll in any second now.

He had to strike before it got him first. Well, what could he do?

Slowly his head rotated on his shoulder, a cautious glance given to the open door of the den. Ears perked up. He bit the bottom of his lip and tenderly got to his feet.

Step by step he made his way away from his home and slipped into the rustling, frozen branches. To his fantastic surprise, the scent of Temnota passing through was pretty strong. Potent enough for him to plant his nose to earth and take a very wavering path, as he wasn't perfect at tracking quite yet, until he caught a quiet noise straight ahead.

Well, that had to be him!

Each bound through the snow leapt him one leap closer to the shadow in a mud puddle. Without any sort of consideration, his pitched laughter squealed high and he bowled straight into his brother. Little nips, tumbles and licks had him readily coated from head to toe in flatted, mud soaked fur,” Брат!” Finally, when he'd decide to relent on his poor brother, he sat diligently before him and the might hole he'd dug,” Что делаешь?” He peeped, curios as to what exactly was going in, or coming out of that hole.

There was never much silence for long, Tem's world was too full of color and noise. Either self created or via another medium, something would always come along to wrench him from the strange coldness.

It wasn't like the bright blue-white snow that made his paws tingle, it came from inside; How Отец would stare with a frown at the moon, how his sisters looked at each other when they thought he wasn't looking, the strange pain that he felt when Ma Veri set her eyes upon him.

But here came Pushok, bounding through the snow towards him. Temnota's face split into a wide smile and just like that the strange quiet was forgotten.

"Брат!" The two calls were mirrored, echoes of each other. They rolled over in the mud and snow until Pushok was as dirty as Temnota who had been digging a hole.

"Просто копать. Я почувствовал запах кролика, но они убежали." Temnota pouted in the way only children could do at this revelation, considering his messily dug hole.

"Бабушка Джейс говорит, что весной их много, но я не знаю..." Tem still wasn't sure if he believed in the idea of spring. His experience was snow and grey clouds and cold but Nana Jace wouldn't lie.

Tem looked up at the overcast sky that threatened to snow again. Temnota had seen enough snow in his life he thought to be able to tell when it would come again. He huffed out a sigh and pawed at the ground. He wanted to be big, he wanted the future to be Now.

"Как вы думаете, мама любила кроликов?" It was a childish question, but it suddenly seemed so important that he know the answer to it. He looked at Pushok, who was so similar but so different. The differences were as familiar as their similarities. Tem knew exactly where the black and white mixed together on his Brother's pelt.
