xxxxxxxxThere was no avoiding it, Adonis thought with a resigned sigh. It was either go the long way around the mountain (which was extremely stupid), try and cross the (dodgy looking) lake, or ask for passage through to the south from a pack he knew nothing about. To make matters worse, he wasn't sure if a kind face even existed anymore in this world forgotten by the Gods. But he was like the rest—cursed to walk on two legs, and force to make due in a body that was foreign and clumsy. He hadn't encountered another four-legged canine in near two months; ever since crossing the plains and swinging north. It was a bitter pill to swallow, especially because he felt alienated even from Luperci.
xxxxxxxxAdonis pushed himself up from the ground and started walking towards the border of the nearest pack. He didn't know the name, but it smelled strongly of many curious smells, but mostly wolf. He was careful as he approached, picking his way along the path with trepidation in his step, but made no effort to mask his presence should any guardians or scouts be watching him from hidden places among the trees. He didn't want his first impression to seem dishonest and thus waste any chance he had of getting through the pack unscathed.
xxxxxxxxWhen he was near enough to see through the trees, but far enough to be respectful of their space, Adonis raised his shaggy head and howled to the pack—I am here, he said, And I wish to travel through!

Palaydrian was restless.

She’d spent her morning turning over the squash garden she’d created a plot for behind her home and clearing away the snow that had choked out what had survived most of the winter. Luckily, a few of the gourds hadn’t rotted the whole way through and she’d be able to turn them into something else, perhaps more birdhouses or utensils. She figured moving around would make her feel better, though in truth she felt like sleeping for a day wouldn’t be too bad. But once the plot was cleared and ready for new planting, she decided she didn’t have the energy or enthusiasm to be a green thumb today. Instead, she decided to take a stroll through the pack, maybe do some patrolling along the borders to help out the pack’s sole Vald.

Shifting to her natural form had been difficult. Much harder than usual and it was something to raise alarm, but once again, the seal point fae brushed it aside, convincing herself watching after three kids was simply wearing her down and a good night’s rest would be enough to revive her. Unfortunately, it was a bit more serious than that, but Palaydrian was stubborn, determined to pull her weight in Vinatta despite her physical condition. The large pawed female padded along the borders, adding her own scent markers to those that were fading from the frequent snowfall. Maintaining these boundaries were now imperative for the pack. Word had gotten out about a Sangi’lak/New Dawn envoy that had come to the lands seeking peace or a treaty of sorts. Though civility was struggled with to stay in place, the chat hadn’t ended on bad terms, a careless threat in the air from her pack brother Bran and now Drin had no idea where she stood with her nomad friends. Things were tense and from the warnings X’ies had given her weeks ago, she wasn’t about to let his ominous threats come to light.

She was nearing the Grand Lake, a location shared between the two neighboring packs, though not amicably. She wished things could be different, but the majority of her pack and the nomads were at an impasse. Losing a friend over her allied association was hard to swallow, but Drin’s paws were tied and she wasn’t about to uproot her family once more. A call echoed through her tired lament, someone wishing to pass through and the individual was close. The fae loped across the terrain and the familiar woods she’d passed through time and time again until she neared the treeline. Her mismatched ocean eyes fell upon a light hued male. He was alone, and didn’t seem threatening from this distance, but Drin still approached with tail held high and ears erect as her snout tasted the air. His scent wasn’t from around here, perhaps he truly did only seek passage through the territory. Hail stranger, the golden femme called, just stopping short of him, still well within the pack’s boundary lines and far enough away to retaliate from a sudden attack. Where have you come from? She asked, seeing no point in hiding the fact she knew he was a new face around these parts and didn’t belong to any of the neighboring packs, scent wise at least.

xxxxxxxxAdonis nervously shifted his weight from one foot to another as he waited. No answer returned to him on the breeze, but he knew better than to strike this off as a lost cause and find passage elsewhere. If someone had heard him, they likely wouldn't reveal their location to some stranger; he'd been just as thorough in his day as a pack wolf. The pale male scanned the trees with a wary eye, his optime form giving him a surprisingly better vantage point than he was used to as a feral wolf. It was only then he realized that standing at full height might be perceived as a threat so he immediately squatted down, balancing on his feet and hands.
xxxxxxxxThankfully he didn't need to wait long. To his surprise, the wolf that emerged was actually a wolf in her feral form, rather than the two-legged form he was so used to seeing this far east. Adonis' ears swiveled forward as he regarded her with a quick glance, before occupying the customary posture of submission and deference required of him. His eyes darted down to her feet, and his head bowed low out of both respect and greeting. The unusual pattern of her coat was fascinating to him; almost as if her outer extremities were dipped in soot save for one leg. He didn't chance trying to catch a glimpse of her eyes, and so the bi-coloration of them went unnoticed for now.
xxxxxxxxHe flattened his hands against the ground and bowed low, only to look up slightly and focus on a point near her chest. "Hail, miss." He replied kindly, "I come from the far west, where the ocean meets the land. My name is Adonis Nero." A beat, and then, "What is this place called?"

The shock of seeing an Optime

had faded over time. Palaydrian had come from wild lands before venturing to the Souls territory. She was brought up in a hierarchical setting, family stigmatized by her “affliction” by her own pack mates though her father’s blood somehow remained untainted. Only he could hold a true rank and meaning within the pack, hating that his own children and mate could never ascend to any form of greatness. Not that Drin was looking for such things, but when her early life unfolded in a tumultuous chain of events, her arrival in a new land where the luperci virus wasn’t such a curse had fascinated and inspired her, choosing a path of life to embrace what she believed was a Luna given gift of thumbs and the ability to walk on two legs. Thus her time in New Dawn came to a close, her brothers and sisters that remained there holding fast to the ways of the old and a lifestyle she had been running from ever since the bullies of the past chased her away. She had a mate and family who loved her for what she was, and now a pack that also supported her in any of the forms she chose to walk in.

As she approached the newcomer, she noticed him hunkering down on his two legs. Curious, her body language still instinctively adapted to displays of her ancestors, standing dominantly at the border of the vikings, but she hadn’t expected such a blatant sign of respect from a luperci straight from the start. This subtle movement queued her in to the queries of his past and his origins. The male even went further to lower himself as best as he could into a submissive posture though she was sure his larger body made the respectful stance uncomfortable. A friendly smirk formed on her lips, noticing how the golden eyed wolf kept his gaze on her creamy hued chest.

Greetings Adonis, my name is Palaydrian Soul. The fae took this moment to relax her stance, sitting back on her haunches and bringing her tail to rest on the ground around her paws. Please, make yourself comfortable, she instructed, so that we may talk informally. You must have traveled far, these are the borders of Vinátta, she explained. The lands here are called Souls, formally known as Bleeding Souls. What brings you to these parts? She asked, curious as to what his story was.

xxxxxxxxThankfully, she was pleased with his display and indicated that he was free to find a position less demanding on his muscles. He obliged, pushing himself up and back to balance on two feet, knees bent in a kneeling position; he wasn't sure where to put his hands so he rested them on the ground to keep from tipping over. Adonis flashed a sheepish smile, as if to silently beg forgiveness for his awkwardness. Surely these wolves weren't used to seeing a such an obvious fish out of water.
xxxxxxxxShe introduced herself as Palaydrian Soul, the pack as Vinátta, and the land as Souls. One ear twisted a few notches forward, and he committed each item to memory. Especially her name. However, Vinátta was a word he had never heard before, and so the first questions that rose to the front of his thoughts revolved around the origins of it. But he was a polite soul, if anything, and obliged her question with a reply, "It is a pleasure to meet you, Palaydrian, and thank you for answering my call." He brushed his tail over the snow as an amiable gesture. "I am searching for my companion, a woman named Juliet. We were separated on the way here after being attacked by a pack of... two legged wolves. I was knocked unconscious and I do not know what became of her after that. However, I am hoping to find her here as we were traveling in this direction before the attack." It was, admittedly, a long shot, but it was all he had to work with. "Instead of risking the mountains to pass through to the south, I come here to ask for an escort through your lands. In return I can offer my basic knowledge as a healer, or my skills as a hunter should you require it."
xxxxxxxxAdonis watched her passively. Though Palaydrian seemed kind, if the laws of her pack forbid strangers, there wasn't much he could do except hope that this pack was as trusting as those back in Seahawk Valley.

Her ocean eyes watched him,

gentle and friendly in their two toned hues. He seemed nice enough, though she could tell from the way he held himself in his two legged form, that he wasn’t entirely sure of himself in this new skin. Perhaps he hadn’t always been luperci? She’d have to ask him, already deciding it would be okay to escort him through the territory. Adonis so far posed no threat and Palaydrian had an uncanny ability of reading others. It may have been due in part to her own honest nature, “what you see, is what you get” air when it came to her. She had always been an approachable and mild mannered she wolf, making few enemies of her own accord. She returned his shy smile with a reassuring one of her own, his awkwardness wasn’t lost on her, but she found it to be refreshing, endearing if you will as she thought about her own confidence simply blooming over time once she had gotten the hang of her own two legged form. It was no easy feat and for that, she felt for the newcomer.

The golden fae’s head cocked to the side as she listened to the male’s explanation. A concerned look knitting her brows at the mention of a lost companion. This Juliet was someone he’d apparently been separated from in his travels and for reasons that made the young mother’s blood boil. The usually warm and gentle fae’s face screwed up into a look of pained anger. You were attacked? How many...how far away was this? She asked, voice laced with a growl,, her front paws shifting impatiently beneath her. Her mate had recently been a victim to some deranged loner within the lands and the angel herself had her own nasty run in with a two legged monster. Though time had healed the emotional scars from Aram’s wrath, his disgusting mark still marred the tender flesh on the she-wolf’s inner thigh, a constant memory of what he had forced her to do and how close she had been from losing her mind out of fear.

Her head shook as if to clear the memory from her mind. I’m sorry, she blurted, once her own emotions had calmed down. Deducing his previous answers, this attack had probably happened outside of the Souls lands and had nothing to do with the man who had cut off her mate’s tail. About your friend... she continued, the steely gaze in her eyes dissipating back to the warm one it had held before. I’d be more than happy to lead you through the lands...and no payment is necessary, we vikings aim to help those who ask of it, she explained as she rose to her fours, turning in the direction of the pack, a physical indication that he could follow her. If you don’t mind me asking, you seem a bit...unfamiliar to your two-legged form? It was a non threatening query, something to pass the time as she began to lead the male through the territory.

Sorry for the wait! Struggled on the reply to this for a bit. @_@ (+300 words)

xxxxxxxxAdonis began to visibly relax under the gaze of the mild-tempered she-wolf. She offered him the passiveness and patience that he needed during this difficult time, even if he hadn't come to fully realize it. But he didn't expect the passion that suddenly bloomed into a raging fire at the mention of his attack. He flattened his ears, but didn't flinch away; he appreciated the outrage, even if there was nothing that could be done for it. It proved that not all luperci, and not all wolves, possessed bad intentions this far east. He was just unlucky enough to have a run in with the wrong pack.
xxxxxxxxHe waved a hand to dispel any ill feelings caused, and lowered his gaze a little further when she gave her condolences. He wanted to be angry about it, and every day he felt just a little more frustrated, a little more unsteady, over he loss. But Palaydrian's sympathy did sooth the wound for now; however temporary the bandage was. "Thank you, Palaydrian. You have shown me more kindness than I have seen in many weeks." He replied with a soft, weary note of sincerity in his voice.
xxxxxxxxThe pale loner moved to follow her, keeping his bearing respectful in case they happened across any of her fellow—vikings, she'd said? He lifted his brows a tic when she questioned his unfamiliarity with the form, and sighed through a bemused chuckle. "No harm in asking. My transformation is a direct result of the attack. I was what most now refer to as a feral wolf, so it is strange to be forced to adapt to a new body." He turned his palm face up and looked down at it with a sad smile, but said nothing more on it.
xxxxxxxxAfter a beat or two, he spoke up again, "You referred to your fellow pack members as vikings before. Could you tell me a bit about your culture, um, if it is not too bold of me to ask."

She had not meant to cause

such alarm, but some scars took time to heal. Over the seasons, Palaydrian had become a strong advocate of justice, a bleeding heart for those who received ill will for no reason. She felt for this stranger and his lost companion, but she needed to accept that some trials were completely out of her paws to fix or change. The most she could do, was offer him guidance through the lands...and that seemed to be more than he had received in the past few weeks. She offered him a smile, thankful that this little admission meant something to him where others had only met him with animosity. The golden fae would never understand the hateful creatures in the world...life was so much easier when help and kindness was offered.

Her gait was slow, easy for Adonis to follow at her side. She wasn’t afraid of running into any pack members. Vinatta was a safe haven for canines from all walks of life. As long as the traveler had a member at his side, his presence wouldn’t be questioned. She knew they most likely wouldn’t run into any other pack members on their trek, Vald duties near the border had been slack, but she along with a another kept a solemn vigilance, aware of one another’s presence and seemingly covering ground along the perimeter that the other had missed. It was all they could do to help out a grieving pack brother. Security of the youngest souls within their home were of the utmost importance, and their unspoken duty had just seemed to be natural.

She listened to his words, alarmed that he had received what she considered a gift by force. She could only imagine what his first shift had been like, remembering the fear in Kiara’s eyes when she had shared a similar story. Her sister of old never shifted though, a rarity in her blood causing her to be immune to the virus. I belonged to a feral pack before coming to these lands, but I was born a luperci, the bitterness that had remained on her tongue when speaking about her past was gone, she had found acceptance here and was no longer ashamed of her heritage, though her old pack found the difference in her family to be an affliction. I can only imagine the fear you must’ve felt...shifting on your own, she continued, have you tried changing back? That was probably the hardest part after the first transformation, but having her family around to coach her through it had made her shiftings more bearable and eventually second nature.

Adonis was curious about her pack and she couldn’t help but smile in response. Of course not, she replied. We are called vikings because the founders of Vinatta based the core of our culture off of Norse mythology, it’s a religion the creatures of old called humans practiced. We aren’t all expected to embrace this new religion, but many of our ceremonies are gatherings are intertwined with the gods and goddesses these humans once honored. Here instead of holding fast to the hierarchical ways of feral packs, we’ve chosen to live a more loosely and relaxed based culture, sharing the responsibility of educating the young, providing safety for the pack, and offering help where its needed. We embrace the virus, using the advantage of hands to reap benefits from the earth, craft tools, raise livestock, and even trade the items we’re able to create with other packs. Her maw closed in explanation, giving him a chance to question her if he was still curious.

xxxxxxxxEven though his mind was preoccupied with the conversation, he could not help but level an appreciative eye to the territory this pack had claimed. The deep, brooding forests were almost welcoming now that he had the companionship of a pack wolf. Ancient trees sprang from the earth and their branches made up a latticework canopy that blocked out most of the sky; light, however, still dappled the floor whenever the wind moved the leaves. It the sight gave him some comfort; it reminded him of home.
xxxxxxxxPalaydrian revealed that she, too, had been born into what he knew as a feral pack, but that she had been born a luperci. Immediately he ascertained that luperci was the word for shifter, but didn't comment further on it. There was no lingering emotion in her words; just the same informative tone as before. He nodded when she questioned the depth of his shifting capability, "I have, but I do not want to risk being caught off my guard again." Though his lupus form was rather large for a normal wolf, it still did not give him an edge over grasping, beating hands.
xxxxxxxxThe ocean-eyed she-wolf launched into a generously detailed explanation about her pack, and Adonis was grateful for the distraction it offered. He didn't necessarily mind bringing up the attack, but it brought a lot of painful memories with it and most of them were still quite raw. He concentrated on what she was saying and was surprised to hear that Vinátta had shrugged off a natural, primitive life, for one that honored humans in their own way. It was a lot to take in, and he did it in stride.
xxxxxxxxThe most shocking thing, of course, was that Norse mythology came from, not wolves, but humans. An eerie shiver ran down his spine, but he subdued it before it could reflect on his expression. "How very fascinating." He said after he had ample time to absorb everything. "Your pack is keeping old stories alive." Adonis remarked with an appreciative smile. "And old ways that may not have been intended for us, but live on all the same. Where I come from, such things would be forbidden, but what your pack is doing is very honorable." Deep down, he was a keeper of stories; of history; of tales. He could see the merit in their actions, where many would rail against it.
xxxxxxxxHe bowed his head out of respect. "Thank you for sharing this with me, Palaydrian."

The viking territory was

impressive to say the least. Palaydrian had first sought out solace within New Dawn and the luscious hues of green that enveloped each creature within the Glen Eyrie. There she had found a echo of home, something to hold dear to her heart. It was the wild and untamed that had first attracted her. She hadn’t realized she’d traveled to a place where the virus wasn’t so stigmatized and frowned upon. In fact, she’d been greeted by a two legger, the dark king Zalen. Thoughts of him always warmed her heart but had it aching for another reason. She knew she belonged with Vinatta, had found a new home here once she realized she enjoyed using hands more than running on all fours, but New Dawn would always be a part of her...and the feral call of the wild would never be forgotten. She was wolf after all and thankfully, her packmates of old still held her dear and Zalen had let her know, she’d always be welcome back “home”.

The fae nodded her head in understanding. There were definitely advantages of being able to stand tall on two legs, wielding retractable claws and hands that could push away and grasp an assailant. Still, she felt sorry for him. Being taken unawares was an unfair fight to begin with. When she had been attacked by Aram, she was in her optime form...and still quite new at it. Her strength had been miniscule compared to the brute who had held her down and laughed in her face, but after, she had sworn to become just as skilled on two legs as she was on four. The fae still felt more comfortable fighting in her bulkier dire wolf, the secui, but now she felt confident in her two legged skin. Another Aram incident would never happen again.

Her voice rose and fell as she led Adonis through the pack lands, speaking of their culture and explaining how they had become vikings in the first place. It had been a lot for her to even wrap her head around when Jiva had first told her of his meeting with the viking king, but when she had finally arrived and been so warmly welcomed into the fold, the woman knew she had found a place where she could truly fit in and belong.

Once she finished her explanation, they continued in a comfortable silence, lasting mere seconds before Adonis replied. Drin smiled, listening to his words and nodding her head. Thank you Adonis, I think so too, she confessed. I’ve always had a fascination for the humans, all the things they’ve built, they way they died out...but I too would have never been able to express my feelings of their history to my old pack. Her face turned thoughtful for a moment, maybe even sad, but her easy smile returned. And it was my pleasure, the fae dipped her head in return. I can only hope you’ll meet others within this land who would also treat you with kindness. Once you find your friend, and I will pray to the gods that you do, will you be looking for a home? She asked, already knowing where she’d tell him to go if his desires weren’t those of the vikings.
