The fireplace crackled warmly in its hearth, illuminating the main living area where the waning sunlight could not. It would be a few hours before the sun set on the distant tree line, though, as much as Kamari might have wished to venture out, she knew she shouldn’t. While she was better than she had been in the past week, she was still rather weak, and her energy levels were still rather low. Her appetite had been slow to return, and Kamari could see and feel the repercussions of her previous stubbornness.

Krios had been right, but, she wasn’t about to tell him that out loud.

Until she had gained a full recovery though, the Shadow had thought it wise to keep her daily duties confined in and around the homestead. Unfortunately, this meant a lot of time spent indoors where she could rest without worry of leaving herself utterly exposed. Kamari had decided to busy herself with writing another letter for her parents for Velimir to take to Portland once the weather was warm and dry enough for another trip. She sat at the single table in the living room, preferring the more open and more lit up room to the much darker study.

Her husband had left for Inquisitor work an hour or so before, leaving the recovering Emissary to her lonesome. The cats were out, Kamari’s two tomcats likely trying to teach the younger feline, Belle, either how to defend their territory range or how to do this or that. It was amusing, really, how much they had taken to the kitten that had been gifted to the couple on their wedding day by Krios’ uncle.

A knock at the door caused Kamari to pause in her writing. Her brows were furrowed as she stared at the door. She could have sworn that Velimir had said that he would come by closer to sunset. Perhaps he decided to come early. Kamari placed the piece of charcoal and half-finished letter aside, rising to her feet and making her way over to the door.

The hair along the back of her neck began to suddenly stand on end as she ventured closer. Accompanying it was a building feeling of dread.

As she opened the door to see who it was, the Shadow instantly understood why.

“Delfina?”

Her voice was a mixture of tense surprise. Her ears fell backwards against her hair, and she could feel her grip on the door handle unconsciously tighten. Of all of the individuals to show up at her doorstep, this particular one was the last person she wanted to see.

Delfina's night had been a slurry of dreams and nightmares. The migraine that day had been brutal and the hastily drunk willow bark concoction had not been strong enough and fast enough. It was too late in the cycle of pain to be effective and the woman had been forced to recluse into her room and the soothing blinding darkness. But the dreams that came were strong, vivid, and clear. There was a task at hand and she could not ignore the urging of the Goddess in her agony.

It was all a sign and she would not ignore it when it was so blatantly sent her way.

She was prepared with a gift, of sorts. Only Delfina would think it were a gift, though. She smiled as she packed the basket. A small clay jar of honey, a bottle of tea, snacks. All the things that would be the perfect disguise to her actual purposes and the various nefarious things on her person.

Delfina had a mission and it was burned into her skull.

She came to the home of her nephew and his little wife, that little wretched creature. She knew that their little collective of Inquisitors would meet together without her, something that she learned from watching the home casually. Victoire's running mouth told the three of them that Kamari was ailing but improving. The little brat. Her smile then had been thin and wane. How could she escape demise? It was so carefully concocted!

At the doorstep, she cleared her throat, and knocked. That smile was plastered on her face, like oil gone rancid. Smooth as silk but foul as rot.

I'm glad to see you are doing better. My dear niece said you had been poorly. I've come to provide something to bring a bit more life to your bones, she offered, moving to push past the Kaiser girl.

The Heiwa woman smiled down at her, though, the action was lacking in anything truly friendly or disarming about it. It was full of arrogance, full of contempt, just as all of the others had been when they had been alone. Though she had always known to be wary of Delfina, it had not been until recently that Kamari had been able to prove that there had been a very valid reason behind Krios’ warnings and those ill feelings she had when in Delfina’s presence.

Delfina pushed past her before Kamari could protest, and, already, the Shadow’s thoughts were whirling, moving faster than lightning across a stormy sky. If Victoire’s accusations were true—and the Emissary was sure that they were—Delfina’s presence there did not bode well for Kamari.

She was alone. Krios was out. The cats were gone. The house was far from the others, secluded thanks to the small patches of forest that grew up around it.

“How kind of you, Delfina,” Kamari said politely as she shut the door.

There was a knife near the fireplace, another tucked away beneath the fur rug. Two in the study. Three in her room. At least one in Krios’ room. Her bow and arrows were in her room. There was a hatchet outside. Her skinning knives were out in the shop.

“Just a minor cold,” she said with a shrug, “Thank you though. I’m faring better than some could have hoped.” She offered a small, forced smile from over her shoulder as she said this. She moved casually over to the table and inevitably closer to the two knives she knew were in the room. Her hands grasped the back of the chair that she had been previously sitting in.

She was alone. She was not of full health. She was still recovering.

Kamari gestured for Delfina to place the basket she had brought onto the table. “Did you bring more of what Victoire brought for us earlier this week?”

Her cornflower blue eyes were cold as they looked up at the dark witch.

Delfina says some very anti-trans things that do not reflect my own thinking. Please remember she's a giant cunt with immensely skewed opinions

The room was not as warm and inviting as the ruin home that she had grown up in, but she figured it lacked the womanly touch. Kamari was as far as a female could get from feminine without declaring herself a boy with girl parts. Or was Kamari made like, too? Imperfect and flawed enough to reject her femininity wholly? Kamari was just as much of a taint on the bloodline as her own sister had been.

That conniving witch at the head of their collective snake had saddled the best hope for improving the lineage with a corrupted sickness that would spread and destroy the Heiwa line. Ondine had reproduced. Once well, twice poorly. The odds were not good. Delfina had not found a suitable partner to continue her own genetics on. Time was against their family and Elphaba had sullied it with her machinations of malicious intent.

Krios ought to have been married off to a good, noble line and not the one of slaves. It was a slap in the face, even if her nephew failed to care.

In the home, she ignored the words the girl spoke: they were inconsequential. She began to unload the jar of honey out of the basket, humming slightly when she looked up from the easy work to meet the slave get's eyes. They were just as cold and inhospitable as the room felt to the materialistic witch.

You are not very welcoming as the lady of the house, Kaiserdaughter. Her words were barbed, hissing out through her teeth as she delicately set the tea in a salvaged and often reused bottle onto the table with a clatter. She turned slightly, hand still in the basket as she paused. You don't seem to care much for me, even if you are now my niece. What naughty things has my nephew been saying to you? she cooed, as sweet as the honey in the jar, and just as jagged as the knife her fingers were slowly coiling around in the basket, disguised by the folds of old cloth.

Delfina unloaded the basket item by item, and Kamari watched with a careful eye.

A clay jar was procured and set upon the table.

Kamari’s muscles coiled beneath the fabrics of her loose-fitting clothing. Instinct told her to be wary, to be cautious, to be alert. While there had always been tension between them before, this visit, this confrontation…there was something different about it. Something…deadly. They were well within the Kingdom’s borders though, within an easy ride or jog from either the central hub of the Ruins or Millstone. Surely…surely she wouldn’t be so brazen…

“I’m afraid that it’s because I was not raised like you highborns are,” Kamari reminded Delfina, her words neutral, but with a bit of heat.

A bottle was placed next to the jar.

The dark witch’s hand paused then, lingered in the basket. Lingered longer than it should have. Kamari felt her hair stand on the back of her neck as her eyes narrowed on the taller woman. “Krios? Oh, he’s whispered many naughty things to me, but it’s nothing his aunt should hear.” Teeth peaked from behind her lips. “As far as my feelings towards you though, Delfina, I’d say that it’s hard to like someone when they try to poison you.”

With a flash, the Heiwa woman moved towards the smaller Kamari. Firelight glinted off of the steal blade in her hand that struck for Kamari’s throat. The Shadow jerked backwards though, narrowly avoiding the deadly strike. She twisted and dove towards the rug where she knew a knife of her own was hidden. She tossed the edge of the fur rug back and snatched the holstered blade. Her hand grasped the handle of the blade and drew it. She turned just in time to put the weapon up to deflect another slash made by the Tradesman.

Kamari gritted her teeth at the force of which it met her own. It sent a shock down her arm. Her time and energy were severely limited, she knew, and she needed to make her strikes count. The Emissary kicked out, trying to get Delfina away from her so that she would not be at the disadvantage on the ground.

Kamari was aware of what was going to happen and Delfina knew that the jig was up. But she proceeded anyway, because that was what the Goddess would have wanted of her. She was a dutiful daughter of the deity and she would never withdraw from a task just because it was hard so long as she was the one who ordained it.

Kamari snapped at her, hitting the nail on the head. Of course she understood her place in the world but she seemed to so happily accept her origin as though it were not a source of ugly shame. She ought to have been so much more remorseful that fate had seen fit to put her in the womb of a lower being and that her life had been a clawing to the top rather than one of luxury and ease.

The actual accusation slipped from the slave get's lips and Delfina launched into action, narrowly missing the much more skilled woman's throat. The Heiwa woman growled as Kamari tumbled away and she launched herself toward the much smaller creature.

You are an abomination to my family's bloodline! she screeched like the banshee that she was. Her hair was a halo about her head as she rushed forward with that knife. The little sneak thief had a knife in her own hand, deflecting back the next strike. Of course her coarse nephew and his equally coarse wife would have weapons hidden about the house, how could she have overlooked such a detail?

A foot shot out at her, catching her at the top of the thigh, but Delfina was filled with righteous fury and with that came righteous wrath. She had to save her bloodline and the loose threads that suspecting her of foul behavior.

You will poison my heritage! she screamed as she lunged forward, throwing her significantly greater bulk against Kamari, unafraid of the knife. Her blade angled toward the woman's arms, legs, anything she could reach to cause damage, even if the end result was that she wanted Kamari bleeding to death on the floorboards.

Her foot caught the woman’s thigh, but it did little to slow or deter her onslaught. She descended upon Kamari’s prone form, her knife swiping wildly in her rage. The Shadow rolled to the side, missing a cut aimed for her legs. Delfina followed her though, her blade seeking the hot blood of the Kaiser. She threw up her own knife once more, deflecting another blow aimed at her.

“You sullied your bloodline and honor when you took your sister’s life!” Kamari snarled, blocking another swipe.

She needed to get off of the floor!

Another slash, another dodge roll.

It was a shame that Delfina would not allow for such an opportunity.

“You hunger for a power that will never be yours to take!” Her sleeve was cut. Delfina’s blade caught on the loose fabric, nicking Kamari’s forearm with the blade’s tip.

Another slash, another deflect.

Kamari’s heart was pounding with adrenaline.

Another slash, another redirect.

The Shadow struck out, trying again to make Delfina back off, but, her opponent was unafraid of the knife, her mind locked on a single goal, a single action. Kamari’s energies were rapidly depleting as she tried to fend off the attacks of the larger and more powerful woman. Delfina struck out again, and Kamari tried to block it. The force at which they met though broke Kamari’s hold, sending her knife clattering away from her.

No!

With Kamari’s knife gone, Delfina’s blade slipped through her weaponless defenses and cut deep across the Emissary’s exposed chest. It sliced through fabric, and blood quickly leapt out as the knife’s edge dragged across her flesh. Kamari let out a gasp, her arms coming up to attempt to protect her from the next blow from the Heiwa.

Somehow she managed to swing hard but it was not difficult to put force when going down. Kamari was deflecting up and aside, which meant there was less strength when there was no added weight to the blows. The knife careened out of the smaller woman's hands and Delfina yelled with a screech of triumph. She pulled her knife back and ran it across the woman's chest, though not deeply enough to outright murder the Kaiser daughter.

Power is for anyone's taking and I have my blessing! she retorted proudly as she pulled away a knife coated in a slight line of crimson. A drop tumbled off the honed edge and onto Delfina's thigh. She almost decided to lick the blade clean and taste the holy vengeance she was exacting. But.. vengeance for whom, she wondered in the back of her mind. Who was she avenging?

Herself.

Delfina inhaled sharply and raised her knife to make another attempt at stabbing the girl. Rather have her dead on the floor so she could yell, covered in blood, to find her idiot nephew. But who to pin the murder on? She had ideas, though they had not admittedly gone very far in the planning stages. It was all impulse and that was a mistake.

My niece should never have sullied my bloodline with her petty hatred! She doesn't know true pain! She knows nothing! she screamed as she made her next attempts on Kamari's young life.

It was a shame, that only when Kamari’s life was on the line, that she finally got the answer she had been searching for for eight long months. Delfina hadn’t denied killing her sister. For eight months, she had sat without suspicion from the Mafiosi or the rest of the Kingdom, living without consequence on a well-told lie. Krios, Victoire, Garsea, they had suffered the loss of their mother with the idea that some Outsider had destroyed their family in a fit of rage.

Anger filled the jackal hybrid’s heart at them being fed a lie all this time.

The blade came down again, and it almost seemed as if Delfina had moved faster now that her steel had finally tasted the lowborn’s blood. She forced her way through Kamari’s ever-weakening defenses, taking advantage of her prey still in the midst of recovery from the poison she had slipped her. The knife plunged into Kamari’s side, cutting through her tunic and into her flesh like hot butter.

The Shadow let out another gasp, her teeth clenching tight from the pain that erupted from both her chest and her side.

Blood pooled rapidly as the knife was pulled back and readied for another downward plunge. This time, Kamari caught Delfina’s hand with her own, though, her arms shook as she tried to fight the Heiwa off. “You’re delusional…Delfina…if you think you’ll…get away with killing me,” Kamari growled, struggling for dominance.

Delfina’s hand slipped through the Emissary’s defenses, but the jackal hybrid had managed to shift the blade just enough so that it bit into the floor board near the junction of her neck and shoulder rather than herself. Kamari kicked at the heavier woman, trying to catch her in the gut to force her off and away from her prone form. Already, she could feel her tunic soiling with her own blood.

“If I’ve learned anything from you highborns,” she panted, “it’s that it pays to have friends in high places. I have many, unlike you.”

When the blade came at her again, Kamari struck out with the side of her forearm, hitting Delfina’s wrist and disarming her, sending the knife flying out of reach.

Delfina didn’t need a weapon to exact her revenge though, just as she hadn’t when she had offed Ondine.

Hands wrapped suddenly wrapped around Kamari’s throat before she could stop them.

Shit!

Kamari gritted her teeth. She unsheathed her claws, digging them into Delfina’s forearms in an attempt to get her to let go. With her legs, she struggled to kick or scratch at her attacker.

She gave a tight laugh at the girl's audacity. Like it's a challenge? You can get away with anything if you know what you're doing, she lectured, tittering almost thoughtfully like a mother hen might at her plucky offspring. Kamari thought herself so wise, so smart, and yet she hardly understood the nature of the machinations that went on around her. Was she so blind or was she just willfully obtuse about it?

Delusional or not, Delfina knew how to get things done, and she was going to get Kamari done with life. That was it. Goal oriented now and again, she could be willful and stubborn. She knew what she wanted at that moment and she would be damned if her brat nephew's brat wife undid all her good work.

Her arms did not shake or waver as the diminutive Kamari fought her off. Life coursed within her and demanded she live, so she struggled against the threat of death. Little slave, little slave, why fight the inevitable with so much gusto?

Your blood tells all. Once a slave, always a slave, you merely slave beneath a different master than your mother and father did, she hissed out between her teeth as her knife came down again. Kamari slammed into her forearm, shooting the knife out of reach.

Growls rumbled out of her throat and before the girl could struggle, her hands slipped in and wrapped around that little neck, with the hair cut short, pretending to be a boy. Do you pretend to be a boy so my nephew wouldn't fuck you? Are you so afraid of being a woman you pretend to be something you're not, little slave? she hissed, straddling the girl and doing her best to ignore the kicks and scratches that pummeled her.

Her arms bled, she could feel it. The smell of blood, mixing of pure and impure in the air without discernible difference. The pain grew too much, even for the migraine-suffering Heiwa woman. She yelped in pain and let her hands loose to clutch the blooded tracks on her forearms. A kick and buck displaced her, slamming her to the ground. Her elbow smarted as it rammed into the ground and sent pain through the nerve, down her finger tips, and back up to her collar bone.

You little bitch, I will fucking end your impure line! she hollered and lunged at Kamari, teeth bared and eyes wild.
