She will bring peace at her back

OOC: Dated before Delfina's trial.

A heavy veil remained over the Kingdom, with the Inquisitors nipping at everyone's heels for answers. Not a single soul was safe from the Boss' demands, the demands of a woman the jackal girl respected with ever particle in her being. Despite the admiration Jaketta held for Elphaba, she was on edge. The coven were the Inquisitors main target, and she had the title of Witch. She was not born to Salsola, she lacked a bloodline to give her an edge. All she had were her accomplishments, the title of Ward, and her divine presence in this world.

May Onofria grace her safe passage through this trying time.

She had to have faith that all she had, or was, was all she needed to stand above accusation.

Jak tried to mimic normalcy, despite how nerve wracking practicing her craft could be. She refused to hide herself away, tuck the very essence of who she was into a dark corner to be uncovered once all was said and done. She stood proud as Witch, and faced the consequences that may bring.

The blood laced Witch gathered some herbs to be used at the shrine she and Julius constructed in the Blackwoods. While some may turn their heads in her direction for continuing to venture there, she would continue to escape to the comfort it brought her. She donned the cloak red wolf cloak, made from a failed attacker, and exited her home. As Warden, she stood tall as she paced elegantly through the Kingdom. She allowed mismatched blood and gold hues to grace whomever she may pass. Her hood was lowered, and her staff strapped to her back. A leather satchel rested across her chest and hung at her hip, filled with the ingredients for a prayer.

The Serf was to touch no pine of the Blackwoods by Elphaba's royal decree, but the dark walnut, Andrew was free to cut it as he liked. There was a dearth of suitable lumber in the darkest reaches of Salsola's holy wood, all prime for the finishing work of Andrew's seaside cottage. There was a certain impeccable quality to the lumber he fetched from the Blackwoods, something inexplicable about its murk-like sheen, even under polish, that Andrew particularly enjoyed.

He stole north with all he needed. A horse and cart. An axe and saw. The trip was long from the Millstone, but well worth the effort.

If it weren't for its particular brand of lumber, Andrew wouldn't cross the threshold into Salsola's strangest wood without dire reason. It was a place of sprits and magic -- and magic was a force that Andrew found deeply unnerving. He did not understand its power, and rightly, he feared the unknown and the harm that it could do. The smell of incense and herbs was carried forth on a disarming breeze.

He was distracted. Ignoring his apprehension, Andrew was drawn toward the source by his curiosity. What ritual would he uncover should he watch from afar. After all, as the inquisition had their way with Salsola, many of the coven kept their craft under wraps. However, this one was bold.

Andrew tucked his axe away and left his cart behind. Passing through the dense wood, he spied her in a clearing. Canting his head, Andrew watched in silence.

The trek through the Blackwoods was as interesting as always. The wind carried the whispers of spirits telling their stories or crying out for long lost lovers. To those not familiar with their voices, they could be an eerie occurrence. To Jaketta, they served as a bridge between the world she'd been reborn to and the world she was cast away from. The spirits had a special connection with the heavenly beings above. She would always listen to their tales like an eager child, yearning for lessons learned.

With a light smile on her face, she broke into the small clearing where she and Julius had erected a shrine. The odd creation sat, free from the melting snow with the help of the sun that broke through the trees above. The skull of the deer was mounting in its center with various bones connected around it. Since then, she had contributed to it, adding freshly bloomed flowers that were switched out from time to time and other trinkets. All of it, was built around tree stump and to wandering eyes could be yet another eerie by-product of the Blackwoods.

There was a path leading to the shrine, through the hardening blankets of snow. When she reached it, several candles were lit. Some of them were half melted, but one stood tall in the middle of the shrine. A small fire was built, through patience and past experience, and then candles were lit. In a small cast iron bowl, sage and lavender began to burn, sure to lead wandering noses to her location.

Once the fire and herbs were burning, and candles lit, Jak began to mutter prayer under her breath. She prayed for the protection of the Sanctus tier. She prayed to lift its curse so that the coven could prosper and expand. Her voice then broke the silence in the clearing. By Onofria's divine grace, so be it. Large ears swiveled on her head, listening for bystanders. She only hoped none of the Inquisitors were out snooping. In all honesty, Jak did not have the energy to withstand their questioning today.

Magic was but a strange craft; its secrets were hidden away from the eyes of mortal men. Andrew thought it reasonable to be wary of the craft in all of its forms. From the unknown came ruin. Spells and curses turned Inferni to ash, and according to the Mafiosi, had so too brought two highborn nobles to their premature end. A witch hunt was underway. The coven would likely take the practice underground, hidden from sight. It was bold, perhaps too bold, to weave spells in the open.

Had Andrew not already had his man -- the one he hoped to tear from Salsola, root and stem -- perhaps he would have watched the young witch with more conviction. After all, all were charged with bringing information pertinent to the investigation to the inquisitors. However, Jaketta's name would not pass his lips or cross into his wild theory, for it would steal from the believable tapestry he carefully wove.

However, the serf thought it wise to keep tabs on the things he didn't understand.

She burnt the herbs. She said the words. Still, what magic she wrought was yet a mystery. Andrew supposed he'd seen enough. He turned away, trying to slip away in silence, but he took a foolhardy step. A dry twig snapped beneath his paw.
